The boom of present day Dubai (1966 to present)

With the discovery of oil, the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum began the development of Dubai. He began transforming the city from a small cluster of settlements near Dubai Creek to a modern port, city and commercial hub. Rashid Port, Jebel Ali Port, Dubai Drydocks, the widening of the Dubai Creek, and the Dubai World Trade Centre were few of the major projects completed at the time. Leadership and vision allowed the UAE to push ahead with ambitious building and social projects. In the space of just half a century, Dubai exploded in growth, building modern wonders such as the Burj Al Arab and Burj Khalifa, which are now very closely associated with the metropolis.

As part of the city's efforts to consistently expand, explore innovation and create opportunities, Dubai continues to plan landmark projects to attract tourists and business alike.

Vision is one thing, but LOTS OF MONEY is what actually allowed Dubai to push ahead…
And yet even their “leadership and vision” still relies on Oyinbo to plan, design, execute, manage and operate their projects!

Meanwhile, if you think that “visa-free” status is the goal of development, then we never had anything to discuss in the first instance…
Development is a PROCESS, not an event. And perfection shouldn’t be the enemy of doing better. Doing better deserves acknowledgment.

My friend, you know as well as i do that Nigerian banks are not merely covering their costs. Non of the top 5 or 6 banks made less than N150 billion in profit before taxes in the last 3 years. You call that covering of cost. All that are monies you deprived depositors in interest and other ambigious charges , and then you are not financing where you should finance.
So, you’ll be happier if they made ZERO profits?
It’s true that Nigerians truly DESERVE the leaders they get. LOL! cheesy

Profits go into lending and expansion, CREATING MORE JOBS…
Those JOBS support an economic ecosystem of service providers (from real estate to healthcare, education, agriculture, etc.).

Investment (NOT charity) is what will save Nigeria…
Businesses (including banks) have to make good returns to investors (who are taking RISKS on an unstable nation).

From The Information Gathered By , The Director of Citizens' Rights, Lagos State Ministry of Justice, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Odusanya, said the rescue team stepped into the matter following a report to the Directorate by the victim.

She said

“It was gathered that Alhaja Rashidat Adeleke, who owns Super King Mark Supreme Store at No. 35 Ayodele Ogunkoya Street, off Governor’s Road, Ikotun area of Lagos, employed the victim as a sales lady in 2019 but the employee ended up residing with her due to the high transportation fare and other stress-related issues for the past 18 months before the ugly incident happened”.

Odusanya further noted that the victim narrated that her employer had the habit of abusing her at the slightest provocation, noting the cause of the alleged incident happened when two other sales representatives in the store aged 10 and 14, had a quarrel, which resulted in damages of some goods at the shop.

The victim said

"When they got home that fateful evening, Alhaja Adeleke asked me how the goods on sale were damaged by the younger sale girls and I responded that I had no idea about how it happened".

“Alhaja Adeleke then angrily dragged me into the kitchen, locked me inside and asked the younger sales representatives if there was hot water available. They responded none was available. But she immediately boiled water and then poured it on me twice before proceeding to flog me repeatedly before I eventually collapsed”.

Odusanya said that the employer, Rashidat Adeleke, has been arrested and transferred to the Gender Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Panti, for prosecution.

The primary purpose of banks is to be a middle man between depositors and Borrowers. But our banks are not doing that. Taking money from depositor and fixing it among themselves in interbank will not make our economy to grow, it is a short cut to making money. The economy will only grow when borrowing is easy for the real sector, when people can easily get the bank get money to finance their businesses at affordable rates. The banks are only lazy and playing safe.
That is why our banks make heavy profits and our manufacturing industiries make losses. The few that get overdrafts and loans from banks and dying under the weight of those finances with heavy interest. No company can make profit paying interest at 26%.
If banks cannot cover their COSTS, they will go out of business…
And not be able to play the financial intermediary role vital to any economy.

Instead of blaming the banks (who are looking after OTHER PEOPLE’S MONEY)…
Address the fundamental issues bedeviling the economy and all businesses (including banks).

This is sadly a recurring problem in Nigeria and among Nigerians…
Instead of addressing the disease, most Nigerians are fixated on the SYMPTOMS!

Never!
Generally we do, but it’s getting much better (and development is a PROCESS)…
The Lagos Road Code (enacted under Fashola) mandates streetlights, sidewalks, signage and markings.

Perhaps the older roads (there are over 3000 roads in Lagos) and FEDERAL roads have not yet caught up…
But at least all relatively recent Lagos roads (including the 450 inner streets done by Ambode) meet the Code.

Meanwhile, if the environment in most of Lagos are not well-kept, look no further than the CITIZENS themselves…
People trade on sidewalks, piss/defecate on the streets, litter the streets, block drainages, steal manhole covers, railings, etc.

At some point CITIZENS/residents have to bear their own share of responsibility with the government (and pay taxes!)…
Because Nigeria’s condition (and future) is ultimately the culmination of the actions of ALL Nigerians, by commission or omission!

So how do you think Nigeria can achieve a single digit lending rate ?
Deposit rates were reduced and lending rates are still high up there.

The problem is that the banks are not lending, they prefer to invest their money in Government securities and interbank placements and not lending to the real sector. If the high overheads is the reason for high lending rates how come banks dont give money to other banks at the lending rate ?

Tell me how we can achieve a single digit lending rate?
Why not? If they can make sovereign-GUARANTEED double-digit returns with minimal or no risk?
What do you have against RATIONAL economic behavior or investment - especially since they’re looking after OTHER PEOPLE’S MONEY?!

If you want to reduce interest rates, reduce the COST of doing business (including the cost of doing business in the sector). Not only do banks (and most businesses) have to be their own local government and public utility providers, but both a reliable credit-check and verification system (on the front end), as well as an efficient judicial system that enables a fast and dependable realization of collateral (on the back-end), is sorely lacking in Nigeria. Interest rates are the primary means for the banks to cover the COST of doing business.

Btw, I can assure you NOBODY in Brazil or China was “envious” of 1980s Nigeria…
Growing up in the US and UK, Nigeria was viewed as an UNDERDEVELOPED (and developing) nation.

A lot of the misleading nostalgia from Nigerians about the Nigeria of a bygone era (some Nigerians even call for the return of colonial rule) is, with all due respect, largely based on IGNORANCE (as the saying goes, ignorance is bliss), which has now been largely shed with the advent of globalization, the Internet, social media and an interconnected world where events thousands of miles away are “viewed” simultaneously in real-time across the globe. Nigeria of the 1980s (and I would guess 1970s) was a relatively poor DEVELOPING nation with more breweries than universities, and which on the back of booming oil revenues which Nigerians themselves had nothing to do with (with production by foreign oil companies and prices determined by OPEC’s actions) IMPORTED virtually everything, from canned beer to hair pins! That was always going to be UNSUSTAINABLE, and not real “development”. It was the veneer without the substance.

For some perspective, Nigeria was the world’s SECOND-LARGEST importer of cement in the 1970s and 1980s (and beyond), second only to US, costing billions of dollars in foreign currency reserves. Today, thanks largely to Nigerian companies like BUA Cement and Dangote Cement, Nigeria is not only self-sufficient in cement but an EXPORTER of cement, saving the nation BILLIONS in scarce foreign currency reserves but also earning foreign currency from exports and creating TENS OF THOUSANDS OF JOBS IN NIGERIA FOR NIGERIANS! That’s real progress and the sort of direction Nigeria should be focused on, instead of importing everything and thinking you live in a “better” country that others are envious of. Even in oil production, Nigerian companies are presently reportedly responsible for about 30% of Nigeria’s oil production from ZERO percent in the 1970s/80s. So in many ways today’s Nigeria is MORE DEVELOPED than in the 1970s/80s.

Meanwhile, for further PERSPECTIVE, the Saudi Arabia that you cite produces over 11 million barrels of oil daily (and that’s even after it’s cut its production from over 13 million barrels to firm up prices) for a population of about 30 million people, while Nigeria produces less than 2 million barrels daily (when Niger Delta militants are not blowing up pipelines) for an estimated population of over 200 million people. Dubai has an indigenous population of only about 400,000 Emirati, and thus has been built, managed and run virtually by foreigners (and of course constructed by foreign SLAVE LABOUR). These nations not only simply have tons more wealth and resources than Nigeria, they also are ONE ethnicity (Arabs) and thus do not have to wrestle with the bickering of Nigeria’s 200-plus diverse ethnicities which often detracts from real development (with things like quota systems, federal character, creation of unviable states, etc.). Nonetheless, signing more and bigger checks is not necessarily an indicia of ‘better’ (or more enlightened) leadership or development. APPLES AND AGBALUMO!

Quit comparing Apples with Agbalumo…
New York City is a couple of hundred years old and had tax revenues of over $82 billion in 2020 (despite the pandemic).

That means that NYC has more revenues coming into its treasury than ALL OF NIGERIA’s revenue (Nigeria only collected $32.6 billion from oil revenues - that is $50 billion less than NYC collects just from taxes). Thus, yet again, getting Nigerians to fully and timely pay their due taxes cannot be overemphasized. So many Nigerians have this weird notion of rights-only citizenship, but the reality is that rights and responsibilities are inextricably intertwined. I still pay US taxes from here in Nigeria, because the US levy taxes on WORLDWIDE income.

PERSPECTIVE is always necessary for meaningful discourse. Just NYC’s Metro Transit Agency has a budget of $17 billion, compared to the entire Lagos State budget of about $2 billion, and yet we still moan about transit problems and bottlenecks in NYC but you expect Lagos to fix all of it 3000-plus roads in one month and still take care of security, healthcare, public education (where the 1.6 million pupils in Lagos’ primary and secondary schools is much more than the 1 million in NYC’s public schools - the BIGGEST school district in the US), etc.

All I am saying is I can't stay anywhere in Nigeria except Lagos, this doesn't mean that things can't be a lot better in our Lagos...

Lagos has the sort of “stress” that helps build the mental muscle (you cannot be a “dundee” here)… grin

Not to compare Apples with Agbalumo, but I was born and raised in New York City, which used to regularly and routinely the most “stressful” city in the US, if not the entire Western Hemisphere. Nigerians often tend to get overly excited about these sorts of parachute “rankings” which often tend to shed more heat than light (for perspective, NYC MTA budget is almost 10x that of Lagos State), instead of concentrating on continuing to do the things we need to do (for example, completing the light rail lines, develop the waterways, build/rehabilitate/expand roads, continue to invest in public education and healthcare, etc.).

CrimeRe: Unrepentant Indian Serial Rapist Hacked To Death By 200 Women In Revenge Attack by 9jaRealist: 12:33pm On Jun 21, 2021
ogbiwa:
A sardonic retelling of how a serial rapist and killer was stabbed to death by 200 women outside an Indian court house has struck a chord with youngsters across the world.

A TikTok video explaining how Akku Yadav met his "very satisfying end" in 2004 has been watched more than two million times.

Many of the viewers would have been too young to remember his case in a country where one woman reported a rape every 15 minutes in 2018.

The true figure is believed to be much worse as the official statistics don't include rapes followed by murders as well as the countless cases that go unreported.

Although being a rape victim is taboo in India, many of Yadav’s victims reported his crimes but instead of arresting him, women were turned away by the police, telling them ‘you’re a loose woman, that’s why he raped you.’

"One woman told the police she was gang-raped and the police responded by gang-raping her themselves. As long as Yadav targeted the poor, the police wouldn’t interfere."

In 2004 they descended on to Nagpur district court's white shiny marble floor armed with knives, stones and chilli powder.

They sliced off his penis with a vegetable knife and continued to stab Yadav's lifeless body after his death 15 minutes into the August 13 attack.

The gangster had committed at least three murders, tortured and kidnapped people, and raped more than 40 women and girls for over 13 years.

He was killed moments after spotting one of the women he had raped and calling her a prostitute before his court hearing.

Police laughed as Yadav threatened to repeat the crime against her and she took off her sandal and began to hit him, shouting, "We can't both live on this Earth together. It's you or me" - sparking the lynching.

The police reaction saw every woman in the slum claim responsibility for his death, telling officers: "Arrest us all."

Yadav had bribed officers with drinks to get away with robbing homes using rape as a weapon. Many of his victims were from the lowest rung of India's race-based caste-system.

Lagos brought the topic, it’s a mess of a state with its wealth, Tinubu or what you ever Dey call that glutton is not a leader, if King of dubai can transform
And Tinubu who
Be like Lagos king for 22 years now can’t transform Lagos then all of them na idiot.
I don’t really pay much attention to these sorts of “parachute” rankings… grin

Without seeking to compare Apples with Agbalumo myself, I was born and raised in New York City and it was as stressful a city as any. In fact, it used to be said that one of the things New Yorkers enjoyed the most about NYC is COMPLAINING about it, and we would miss it whenever we left the City ( cheesy). I was in Chicago over this past weekend and there were 45 shootings over just a 24-hour period. There were over 55,000 gun-related deaths in the US last year, more than deaths from Boko Haram and banditry in Nigeria over same period.

So, let’s try to have proper PERSPECTIVE, Lagos is a DEVELOPING economy, and accordingly most of the complaints and “stresses” of the city are bound to be alleviated if the government continues to do the things it is doing (including building, rehabilitating and/or expanding roads). For example, when the (admittedly interminable) Light Rail becomes operational and more waterway routes are developed, it will greatly relieve the “stress” of traffic listed in the rankings. Development is a PROCESS and not an event!

Buhari is not brutal, Tunde Idiagbon was the brutal one, he was the one who made the WAI, go do research, after the coup, they needed a northerner they can control they chose buhari as head, that’s why when Babaginda saw off Tunde who was going to Saudi off, as he turn back, na slap e use drive Buhari, buhari never fought in the war either, na office e Dey, na them adekunle the scorpion, them obasanjo and co really Dey the war front, common do research, before you cap with me, Buhari have never been a hard guy, na just dull, dumb ethnical bastard. Just an extremist.
What are you going on about? huh

You seem to completely miss the point. 36 years later, Nigerians are still moaning about how KAI used to make people frog-jump on the streets for indisciplined behavior, but Lee’s government used to publicly flog and fine Singaporean citizens and residents for even lesser offenses. The point is if you want to be like Singapore then you have to do what Singaporeans did, including not only behaving as well-disciplined Singaporeans do accepting without complaint governmental actions and impositions (including demolitions and public whippings). Nigerians cannot derive the benefits of Singapore without the sacrifices of Singaporeans. APPLES AND AGBALUMO!

Yea they are praised for better job on something crucial not social amenities!
I happen to live in one of those countries in the world for 19yrs now and trust me its possible to do it in one month!!!!!!!
And I was born and raised in the world’s richest and most advanced nation, until I fell in love with Nigeria…
The US relies entirely on the taxes paid by its citizens (although it is also the world’s BIGGEST debtor nation).

Meanwhile, most Nigerians outside of the civil service and PAYE withholding do NOT pay taxes and LASG THANKS those who do…
It’s called PERSPECTIVE and we have to compare like with like. Lagos is DEVELOPING economy and basic infrastructure is CRUCIAL for us.

PS: Btw, Biden was praised for signing the Juneteenth public holiday bill - that’s hardly “crucial”! grin
