PrinceMajestic: anywhere I go it is difficult to find a chess player. Everywhere I go I go with my mat. I have to teach people sometimes when i find myself in a new environment, imagine last year I was with some corpers n not 1 was a chess player then in 2019 during my nysc of all the numerous corpers in my lg only 1 chess player I discovered n service was almost over b4 we both found ourselves. Most time I have to teach people how to play it but u know a chess player can't enjoy game with beginners who just learnt. I'm serious bro, chess players are always hard to find they are not commonly found unlike draught or ludo players. It amounts to why most Nigerians have very low IQ. In fact most of them do not know what is chess, most people I taught saw the game for the first time so I know what I'm saying. Chess players are only common among armed forces guys. A game as worthy as chess ought not to be lacking good number of players in this country Birds of a feather? Grew up playing chess and know so many people who do. > |

festacman: The teaching of religion and the evaluation of how the instructions are absorbed cannot be discarded because of cheating. That's defeatist.
Every knowledge that forms integral part of humanity comes innately and that means that God has already put it there. However, there is nothing wrong with man's effort to make improvements. Don't forget that what brought this thread of intellectual argument is prioritizing religion above sex education and not that sex education is evil in itself. My argument is that teaching about God is paramount and sex education is secondary because the primary innate knowledge in every human that can effectively suffices already exists.
VVF, STDs and unwanted pregnancies are NOT essentially part of sex abnitio. Often, these things are self-inflicted. Treating barrennes or infertility comes under medicine and not sex education. Couples can have sex and have been having sex smoothly without them. Look, when a man and a woman lie nakedly together, naturally instincts are capable of driving to satisfying sex. Not in public schools (paid for with EVERYONE’s taxes, including atheists and believers of native ‘religions’)… Parents who feel that “teaching about God is paramount” should do so themselves, either directly or through their church. Sex Education is certainly NOT paramount… It is not even a priority nor something that should necessarily be made available in all schools, but it is good UTILITARIAN knowledge. > |

festacman: Exactly! And parents often use stories, anecdotes and illustrations drawn from their life experiences and acquired knowledge to teach their children. And teachers are universally regarded as IN LOCO PARENTIS!
I agree that you can teach values without religion but any value taught without a spritual force behind it becomes mere guidance for the mind physically rather than that which MOULDS the inner mind.
By the way, Nigeria is not the headquarters of "poor public morality". Every country in the world including US experience poor public morality because humans by their freewill abhor control. The only difference is that justice system work more effectively in those countries and so people try as much as possible to stay in line.
That Oyibo folks don't teach religion in their public schools doesn't automatically means Nigeria will follow suit. And quality of their education has absolutely NOTHING to do with not teaching religion. Education system… Nigerians fail to see the connection between input and output. A liberal and tolerant society (not wedded to base dogma) enables a million flowers to blossom, and leads inevitably to the disruptions (intellectual and otherwise) that often underlie and/or create progress. It took someone questioning religious dogma at the expense of his own life and liberty for humanity to reach the watershed discovery that the world is not flat which was an early precursor of scientific (and ultimately industrial) revolution. That the Oyinbo Christians from whom you imported this FOREIGN religion freely allow Muslims to wear hijabs to their own schools, and do NOT require the teaching of Religious Knowledge in their own public schools has ultimately created the sort of enlightened and cosmopolitan society that so many Nigerian Christians are sometimes literally dying to rush off to - and of course that (and the influx of educated and enlighten immigrants) has also contributed significantly to a BETTER QUALITY of education. > |

festacman: Nothing impacts on children's mind more than stories and illustrations. Stories about God in religious studies captivate children and moral lessons therefrom resonate and echoe in their subconscious as they grow. If everybody has to go to church to know God then what's the essence of evangelistic outreaches?
Computer science is an emerging body of knowledge but sex is as old as man. People from time immemorial have been procreating and enjoying sex without problems. So your attempt to compare an emerging knowledge with residual knowledge falls flat on its face.
There is nothing wrong with studying religion for GRADES because it helps to know how well knowledge is imparted.
Yes, we have priests/pastors molesting children all over the globe just as we have priests/pastors all over the globe not molesting children. Crimes or offenses are as old as man. Reason why every action has a price tag including imprisonment. NOPE! Definitely not necessarily in Nigeria, where sex-for-grades and cash-for-grades and “expo” are prevalent… The irony of students CHEATING on Religious Studies exams (up to WAEC level) is apparently lost on many Nigerians. Meanwhile, you miss the point of the Computer Science analogy. You seem to think that there’s no point in learning what are parents didn’t, and hence the analogy. Nonetheless, incorporating your response, should we quit learning about agriculture, food, water sanitation, medicine, etc., because food, water and the human body “are as old as man” (I would add “woman” but I am well aware how any perceived equal treatment of the genders trigger many religious folks)? Learning is LIFELONG, and as the body of knowledge grows so should we. Btw, people have NOT been procreating “without problems”. There have always been issues arising from sex (including issues such as VVF Vesico-vaginal fistula, STDs, and unintended pregnancies, among others), and Sex Education is one of the tools that help better understand these issues and deal much better with it. Hopefully, you don’t think (eg) we should ignore infant mortality because it’s “as old as man”! > |

othermen: Doing religious studies doesn’t mean you are being indoctrinated with a certain belief.
What CRS taught me that year was reconciliation, forgiveness, fortitude, charity and tolerance. I think these virtues exist in other religions as well... in Islam, in the Odu Ifá. The purpose of education is to expose us to that which we do not know, to help us have an understanding or enlightenment and make us more accepting... and those that cannot listen to others or to the contrary are not yet educated and that is why I think that Mrs Adetutu's concern should be listened to as well.
However, having listened, I cannot commend her activism, as it lacks premises or reason... but even the absence of such premises or reason shouldn't be the basis of disrespecting another's view. While I think her request should be respected, I hope she allows herself to be informed of the likely consequences of her action which sadly it is her child suffering. Such consequence includes but is not limited to the insight the little girl would be losing but also the opportunities that such knowledge or evidence of such knowledge affords. The little girl however may be made to take an hybrid civil & moral education class to lessen the lack or withdrawn from the school altogether and taken to that which suits the backward, retarding and hindering definition of education that Mrs Adetutu has. You can teach all of those values WITHOUT religion attached to it… That’s why the irony of Nigeria’s public religiosity and it’s poor public morality isn’t surprising - one has NOTHING to do with the other.
