The plot was like that of a movie, leaving trained security and intelligence officials confused. Sources at the presidential villa said Mr Osinbajo, who has been in charge since President Muhammadu Buhari proceeded on a 10 day The plot was like that of a movie, leaving trained security and intelligence officials confused. At the end of it, Lawal Daura, then head of one of Nigeria’s foremost security agencies was whisked away while his well trained security aides waited for him. Multiple sources at the Nigerian Presidency have told PREMIUM TIMES how Mr Daura, former Director-General of State Security Service, (SSS), was sacked and arrested on the orders of Acting President Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday. Mr Daura was sacked after masked SSS operatives laid siege to the National Assembly complex preventing lawmakers and civil servants from gaining access into the building. The siege was only lifted about an hour after Mr Daura’s sack. OSINBAJO OUTRAGED Sources at the presidential villa said Mr Osinbajo, who has been in charge since President Muhammadu Buhari proceeded on a 10 day vacation to the UK, was outraged by the actions of the SSS. “When the siege began, the acting president quickly went to action and was able to gather preliminary information of what was going on after which he invited some of the security chiefs concerned for a briefing,” one of the sources said. He said those invited include the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris and the former DG, Mr Daura. PREMIUM TIMES earlier reported Mr Osinbajo’s meeting with both officials. The source also said the acting president was briefed earlier by National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno. “When Lawal Daura came in, the acting president asked him who cleared him to order operatives to lay siege on the National Assembly; and his response was ‘shocking’. “He simply said it’s within his powers and that he is only answerable to the President and Commander-in-Chief who appointed him,” the source said. The source also said unknown to Mr Daura, the acting president had already spoken to Mr Buhari after initial reports indicated that Mr Daura “was in play with President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki.” After his response, Mr Osinbajo told his media aide, Laolu Akande, to immediately issue a statement announcing the sack of Mr Daura. “The acting president also asked the National Security Adviser to hand over the sacked DG to the police for further investigation,” he said. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/279324-exclusive-how-ex-sss-dg-lawal-daura-was-arrested.html |

It was moment of celebration at the council chambers of the Borno State government house when the governor, Kashim Shettima, hosted an indigene, Israel Zakari, who emerged the best candidate at the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) exams. Israel and his mother, Jummai Zakari, were ushered into the council chambers where the governor offered a seat to the young man he called ”King of JAMB”. Israel scored 364 marks to emerge the best. Mr Shettima said his attention was drawn to Israel’s achievement by a friend of the boy’s family via a text message. He said he immediately directed the person to contact the Zakari’s and invited them to visit him in his office in Maiduguri. According to him, the young man who also did well in his WAEC is an ‘Albert Einstein’ of his time. He said Israel’s performance has proven to the world that the people of Borno State are ”not known for the Boko Haram conflict alone; but also in academic and scholarly excellence”. “I am fixating on his achievement because it has also put me particularly in the spotlight. An orphan, raised by a single mother a son of Boko Haram-ravaged Borno who triumphed against all odds. “He has proven to the world that where there is will, there is a way; he has proven to us that adversity should not lock us down; adversity should bring out the best in people. We have to identify with this young man; we have to identify with the boy and his family, fundamentally for two reasons; we must avoid the tyranny of the majority. I am a Kanuri man and a Muslim; this young man, is a Bura-man and a Christian – but above all he is a son of Borno. We must at all times have the generosity of courage and magnanimity to be inclusive. I am an advocate of inclusivity, I am an advocate of tolerance and accommodation. This is the fundamental reason we invited the Zakaris so that we can all come together and celebrate this young man who is a symbol of excellence, resilience against all odds, so that any young man from Borno can be inspired. “Incidentally the young man has secured an admission into Covenant University and the Borno State Government would want to take full responsibility for his full scholarship. I am in the last lap of my time in office as a governor, so I want to pay the full five years scholarship for him; even though who ever that would succeed will sustain whatever commitment we have made, but I felt that when opportunity beckons like this one should utilise it optimally. So to keep the mind of his mother at rest, we are going to pay the full package of his scholarship now. “The full five years scholarship include the cost of books, cost of living in the campus, and all other related expenses. While we are giving you the offer letter today, the commissioner for higher education will hand you a cheque of N5 million naira which covers all that he needs to study electrical engineering at the Covenant University till graduation. “And I want you the mother to make the payment upfront so that this will not be affected by any kind of inflation. “If not because it is a little bit late, I won’t mind taking him to Harvard or Oxford to pursue his degree; but we will still not lose hope in exploring those opportunities.” In a voice drenched with emotion, Mrs Zakari thanked the governor and the government of Borno State. “We are honored and I am honored and so lucky for this kind of benevolence,” she said. “I did not expect this. We are so thankful and we can’t be happier. What you have just done today is a testimony to the fact that you have keen interest in the capacity development of the young people of Borno people. When you invited us we did not believe this will happen, but you have exceeded our expectation. I am product of what Borno State did to me 18 years ago. My parents didn’t have the capacity to fund my education to a federal government college, but the Borno State government did it. And here I am still benefiting from the state today. I am grateful. “After my graduation, I got admission to study Agricultural Economics at the University of Maiduguri where I graduated with Second class Upper (2.1) in 1999 after which I moved to Lagos to join my husband who was a military man, who unfortunately passed on as a Major and left me with three children of which Israel is the second child. “And since 2004 up till date, I have been fending for the children as a single mother. This scholarship given to Israel is a big burden that has been lifted off my shoulders, now I am going to be paying school fees for only two children. “I want to encourage of Borno State to believe in themselves and to know that every average northerner is intelligent. I believe we have the likes of Israel in Borno State; and with what the Borno State governor has done, every other child will be encouraged to work hard and achieve even greater success.” “I never knew I would emerge with the best result”– Israel A quiet and unassuming Israel said he did not envisage coming out as the best candidate in the 2018 JAMB exams. He said he simply read his books and prepared himself for the examination. “Honestly I did not read for the exams to emerge the best, but to pass my exams,” he said. “But when I was mentioned as the best, I simply thanked God even though it surprised me,” he said. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/regional/nnorth-east/279265-borno-governor-celebrates-best-jamb-candidate-for-2018.html

This is what happened under Jonathan Govt. Difference: Nobody was sacked, no condemnation from Jonathan Govt.. ......... Heavily armed policemen, yesterday, invaded the National Assembly complex, tear-gassed and tried to prevent members of the House of Representatives, including the Speaker, Hon Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, from entering the complex. This forced some lawmakers to scale the fence in order to enter the chambers for their legislative duties. In an unprecedented action since return to democratic rule, the police fired tear gas in the arcade of the complex after several legislators, who had escorted the speaker, successfully breached the Police barricade to smuggle him inside the main complex of the National Assembly. A number of legislators who could not pass through the side gate where the speaker went through, eventually scaled the fence to enter the complex. Once in the chambers, members who were provoked by the development almost went into a riotous mood and some even tried to fence out President of the Senate, Senator David Mark who interrupted proceedings in the Senate to cross the lobby to investigate the developments in the House. Livid members also, yesterday, commenced collection of signatures in support of an impeachment notice against President Goodluck Jonathan and 120 signatures had been collected by last night. Following his discussion with the speaker, Senator Mark ordered shutdown of the National Assembly complex till next Tuesday. He also summoned the Inspector-General of Police, Suleiman Abba to report on Tuesday to give explanations for the development. Meanwhile, the Police yesterday cited receipt of intelligence information on the possible invasion of the National Assembly by hoodlums for their action. How it started The House of Representatives which was on break was reconvened, yesterday, following a letter from the President seeking legislative approval for the extension of emergency rule in the three troubled states of the North-East. However, ominous signs of trouble were first noticed on Wednesday night with the beef-up of security in the National Assembly complex. By yesterday morning, the security cordon had been significantly beefed up with several detachments of heavily armed regular and mobile policemen including hooded security agents manning all entry points into the National Assembly complex. Entry was, however, limited to only the main gate near the Eagle Square and everyone including legislators were thoroughly quizzed before being allowed entry. Before Tambuwal arrived, the Deputy Speaker, Chief Emeka Ihedioha had arrived around 10.35 a.m. and was easily passed on by the Policemen. Situation, however, came to a head at about 10.38 a.m. when Speaker Tambuwal in the absence of police security approached the first gate and met a cordon mounted by policemen who refused him entry. The speaker, who was escorted by several House members, remained inside his vehicle while the members came out and asked the policemen to remove the barricade for the speaker. The policemen were unmoved, forcing a physical engagement with the members who eventually overpowered the policemen, allowing the speaker’s convoy to proceed along the main road leading to the second gate which was, however, firmly locked against the convoy. Again, the lawmakers, now already worked up, engaged the policemen but the policemen were unmoved and the speaker had to step down to confront the policemen. “Gentlemen, my names are Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, and I am the Speaker of this House,” Tambuwal told the policemen who all without exception ignored him and turned their backs on him. Again, the speaker said: “I am here as our constitution demands to go in and preside over the sitting of the House. Officers, I would like to know who is the commanding officer here. “Can you identify me as the Speaker of this House?”, he asked. The policemen who stuck to their guns remained mute, leaving the speaker to himself. Having received no response from them, Tambuwal moved back and stood in the sun, waiting for a likely commanding officer to come. By 11.20 a.m. the speaker having been tipped off about a small gate which was half opened, marched forward alongside a few members and made his way in before the police could realize. Even after the speaker had smuggled himself in, the police were unyielding as they kept other members of his entourage outside forcing a number of them to scale the gate into the National Assembly complex. Among them were the Minority Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila who last night described Thursday (yesterday) as a day that would forever live in infamy being the day he had to jump the fence to where he works. Among other notable persons who scaled the fence to enter the National Assembly complex were the deputy minority leader, Suleiman Kawu (Kano); Bimbo Daramola (Ekiti), Samuel Adejare (Lagos), Mohammed Bago, Niger; Babatunde Adejare, Lagos; and Aman Pategi among many others. After the speaker and his entourage successfully entered the second gate, they were met by some other legislators who came in from within the chambers to receive him and marched in solidarity through the arcade to the White House, where the main chambers are located. As they marched, the police in a last minute burst to deter the lawmakers fired tear gas in their direction, but the speaker and his entourage were determined as they marched purposefully towards the main building and once inside proceeded straight into the chambers were the speaker was hailed by members who sang solidarity songs of victory. Tear gas was also hurled into the lobby leading to the Senate and House chambers as a final act of deterrence, but it was to no avail. The songs of victory were interspersed with expressions of anger and many members shouted in condemnation of the executive arm of government. It was not long before some members produced a piece of paper as they commenced the gathering of signatures in support of an impeachment motion against President Goodluck Jonathan who several members blamed for the unprecedented development. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/11/police-take-nass-tear-gas-lawmakers/

The former caretaker Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ahmed Makarfi, has warned the party to be careful about the type of persons it accepts back into the party. The former Kaduna State governor spoke on Friday in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, during a visit to the party’s secretariat in continuation of his nationwide tour to solicit support for his presidential ambition. Makarfi said that those who left the party when things were rough and now returning because they could not realise their ambitions elsewhere, should not be trusted with too much responsibility. He said, “We must be careful whom we admit back into the party so as not to repeat the mistake of the past.” He warned against a repeat of the past where crisis engulfed the party immediately it lost the last presidential election. Makarfi also warned those clamouring for restructuring to be careful so as not to hand over the responsibility of restructuring to those who should not be trusted with power. While wishing him well in his presidential bid, the state party Chairman, Sam Uhuotu, said that Makarfi had proved his worth as a good leader with the way he handled the crisis in the PDP when he was the caretaker chairman. https://punchng.com/makarfi-warns-pdp-against-accepting-all-defectors/ |
