2019: Coalition against Buhari reaches agreement tribuneonlineng.com Jul 1, 2018 5:00 AM •PDP, ADC, nPDP, SDP, 34 others to sign MoU •Southern, North-Central leaders meet Tuesday over ‘unity candidate’ THE plan by the opposition parties to form a grand alliance to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which is certain to present President Muhammadu Buhari as its standard-bearer in the 2019 election, is finally taking shape as the parties have almost concluded the terms of the alliance. Sunday Tribune learnt at the weekend that the leading opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Labour Party, African Democratic Congress (ADC), New PDP (nPDP) and about 34 other parties and groups are close to signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the alliance. The four-member committee working on the MoU, it was gathered, was expected to perfect the document earlier in the week but could not finish it. This, it was said, was to give the legacy aligning parties enough room to digest the contents of the MoU and come up with suggestions before a final draft is produced and signed. It was learnt that the opposition leaders are mindful of time and are determined to conclude work on the document and sign it within weeks. According to a source within the coalition, Nigerians would begin to witness serious activities in the coalition. “We are hoping to conclude all plans in the next three weeks. I can assure you that Nigerians would begin to see serious activities in the next few days,” he stated. Talks were said to have reached a critical stage among the leaders of the opposition parties, who were said had agreed on how best to go about the alliance in a way that will make the 2019 presidential election a walkover for the opposition. Sources told Sunday Tribune that the PDP, nPDP group and other aggrieved groups within the APC had shown strong commitment towards the alliance which they said was necessary in the interest of the country, which they said is drifting towards disintegration. A significant number of serving governors and a majority of the National Assembly members across party lines, it was revealed, had bought into the alliance, as well as former presidents who are worried that the country is tottering on the precipice with a troubled economy, escalating killings, vices and growing corruption in the country, without decisive action from the sitting government. Sunday Tribune gathered that the one of the pending issues among the groups is the platform to adopt, particularly on whether to use ADC, PDP, SDP or any other acceptable party as the platform to drive the alliance. Sunday Tribune, however, gathered that the issue of platform would not be a sore point, as the overriding consideration for the stakeholders is the need to save the country from total collapse under the Buhari government. The stakeholders expressed worry that the Buhari-led government is not ready to arrest the sliding economy or protect the citizenry against armed invaders, especially in view of the ceaseless killings across the country as a result of the unchecked activities of herdsmen and other unscrupulous elements. Meanwhile, a crucial meeting has been scheduled for Makurdi, the Benue State capital, on Tuesday, by Southern and North-Central leaders of the country on the possibility of a candidate of that zone extraction squaring up with incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari in next year’s elections. Sources hinted that the option is among current permutations in the major groups of political parties and mass-based organisations trying to forge an alliance before the polls. Some Northern leaders privy to the planned meeting in Makurdi, told Sunday Tribune that a couple of politicians from the North-Central nursing presidential ambition had indeed reached out to influential groups and individuals from the South for possible endorsement. Checks indicated that the leaders will hold a zonal rally, similar to the ones organised in the three zones in the South in the last few months to test the strength of the movement that will coalesce in the grand alliance. The leaders, it was also gathered, would use the opportunity of the meeting to extract commitments of the various interest groups to the current renaissance, especially on the overall agenda of the movement. Part of the demands of the leaders include restructuring of the country, implementation of the 2014 National Conference report; shakeup in the nation’s security architecture, as well as in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to guarantee free, fair and credible elections next year. Middle Belt plans ‘unity candidate’ to upstage North Details have also emerged as to how leaders of the Middle Belt Forum picked four of its 12 presidential hopefuls for the 2019 election. Sources close to the Forum told Sunday Tribune in Abuja that the Forum X-rayed credentials of the contenders including Senator Barnabas Gemade, Dr. John Dara; Professor Iyotshe Hagher and one former military officer whose name was given as Colonel Kontagora (retd). It was gathered that the plan of the Middle Belt was to checkmate the core North in the race for 2019 election, as sources said that the Middle Belt had always been overlooked anytime the presidency was coming to the North. “The move is a massive one and there is the determination to checkmate the North this time. The core North has always taken the slot each time the presidency is zoned to the North. This time, we are presenting quality candidates, who are seasoned technocrats and we will market them to the whole country,” a source in the know said. It was also gathered that during the week, leaders of the Middle Belt would present the shortlisted four aspirants to leaders of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, the pan-Igbo group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, and the South South Forum in a bid to determine the ultimate candidate for the job. Sources said that the four regional groupings would hold another screening session to bring up a ‘unity candidate’ which will ensure that the North is checkmated this time. “If you look at the electoral map of elections of 1983 and 1999, you would discover that the Middle Belt delivered the presidency to Alhaji Shehu Shagari and ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo in the two rounds of elections. The Middle Belt has always played a key role in resolving the electoral direction of Nigeria,” a source stated. It was gathered that the four emerged after a rigorous screening exercise, featuring a dozen aspirants. The screening panel, which was chaired by Air Commodore Dan Suleiman (retd), according to sources, shortlisted Olawepo-Hashim as the youngest presidential hopeful from the Middle Belt due to his display of verse knowledge in business and economy |
Pinnick reacts after FG sacks him as NFF president dailypost.ng Jul 2, 2018 4:02 PM Amaju Pinnick has reacted to his sack as president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), describing it as “null and void”. On Monday morning, the Minister for Youths and Sports in Nigeria, Solomon Dalung, ordered the current NFF board to vacate their office, in respect to a ruling by the apex court in Nigeria, the Supreme Court. Dalung also asked Chris Giwa, who was voted as President of the NFF through a congress that wasn’t recognized by FIFA, to take over the running of the Glass House. However, in a statement signed by the counsel to Pinnick, Festus Keyamo and made available to DAILY POST, the embattled NFF boss gave reasons why the ruling cannot stand. It reads: “We are solicitors to Mr. Amaju Pinnick and the present Board of the NFF which he heads. We issue this statement on the instruction and directive of our clients which reflects their official position on the matter. “The attention of our clients has been drawn to a statement purportedly issued at the behest of the Minister of Sports, Mr. Solomon Dalung, directing the NFF to comply with certain court orders effecting a change of leadership in the NFF. “Our clients wish to alert the general public and the authorities in Nigeria that the so-called directive by the Minister of Sports is null, void and of no effect for the following reasons. “(1) Whilst our clients respect the sanctity of court orders, unfortunately the said court orders are not binding on FIFA, the World Football Governing Body. The NFF is an affiliate of FIFA. It should be noted that FIFA has consistently maintained that this same matter has been taken to the highest Court of Sports Arbitration in Switzerland by these same individuals and they have lost. FIFA is only bound by the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sports AND DOES NOT ENTERTAIN OR TOLERATE decisions by local courts in footballing nations worldwide. Hence, FIFA has since upheld the decision of the Court of Arbitration on this matter and recognized the NFF Board led by Amaju Pinnick. Nigeria has a duty to comply with that decision. In addition, for the indiscretion of those individuals like Chris Giwa to approach the local courts, FIFA has since imposed a worldwide ban on them from all footballing activities. “The end result is that Chris Giwa and his so-called Board members do not have any locus standi with regards to footballing matters and the Federal Government CANNOT have any dealing with them on any footballing matter. The obvious implication of all these is that if any attempt is made to recognize Chris Giwa and derecognize Amaju Pinnick and his Board, FIFA WILL DEFINITELY IMPOSE A LENGTHY BAN ON NIGERIA from all football competitions locally and internationally and that will spell doom for Nigerian Football. “The immediate casualties of this ban would be (a) The Falconets who have qualified and are scheduled to participate in the Under-20 Female World Cup in July, 2018 (b) The final phases of the AFCON Qualifiers for the Super Eagles scheduled for August/September, 2018 (c) The Super Falcons defending their title in December in Ghana (d) No Nigerian Club side would be allowed to participate in the Continental Championships and (e) the future of all Nigerian players based in Nigeria would be in jeopardy as no Nigerian player would be allowed to be sold or transferred to any club anywhere in the world. “Please, find attached the latest letter from FIFA to Chris Giwa, through his lawyers confirming the position of FIFA on this matter. “(2) In view of these facts above, our clients have taken steps to vacate the orders given by the Federal High Court in Jos. It should be noted that the said orders were given ex-parte (one-sided), as no other person was served with court processes. It should also be noted that the orders were given against Amaju Pinnick and his Board members (who are not parties to the case and were never served) and in favour of Chris Giwa (who is also not a party to the case). Besides, these orders are to last for only fourteen (14) days as provided by the Rules of Court. Our clients state these facts as they are in order to inform the public of the nature of the orders given without meaning to denigrate the authority of the court. (3) The Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, SAN, a few weeks ago, having studied the Supreme Court judgment has already advised (by a letter dated 13th June, 2018) that the matter is subjudice, and that Government cannot intervene at this point. He advised all parties to await the FINAL DETERMINATION of the case. However, in a desperate attempt to assume office at all cost, Chris Giwa sneaked back to court to obtain these ex-parte (one-sided) orders prompting the office of the Attorney-General to issue yet another advice again dated June 26, 2018, advising compliance to the court order. “(4) Finally, our clients also urge restraint and caution because the substantive matter is pending in court and has not been fully determined. Our clients have also taken steps to set aside these orders. Therefore, it is important that the Government awaits the full and final determination of the entire matter. It may be the contention of Chris Giwa and his so-called Board that the Rule of Law must be obeyed which means an immediate enforcement of the one-sided (ex-parte) orders. However, Nigeria is also bound to abide, recognize and enforce the decisions of the Courts of Arbitration for Sports which have since dismissed the case of Chris Giwa and his so-called Board, and affirmed Amaju Pinnick and his Board as the authentic leadership of the NFF. “Our clients are therefore VERY SHOCKED that despite these glaring question marks, the Minister of Sports refused to advise Government correctly as to the position of FIFA on this matter and the existence of an Award against Chris Giwa and his so-called Board by the Court of Arbitration for Sports. The Press Release by the Minister of Sports would definitely cripple football in Nigeria and make Nigeria a pariah State regarding football. Our clients do not, by this letter, want to give credence or promote so many insinuations, peddled about, as motivating the actions of the Minister of Sports. Our clients only urge the President and Commander-in-Chief, President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently reverse the position of the Minister of Sports and save Nigerian Football from collapse. “As a result of the CLEAR AND UNEQUIVOCAL position of FIFA on this issue, our clients urge the President to INSTRUCT the Minister of Sports to engage strong legal representation to challenge these court orders that were given without hearing from anyone or joining anyone on the other side (including the Minister of Sports). “Whilst this is being done, our clients urge the President to direct all parties and law enforcement agencies to await a full determination of the case before doing anything in this regard as a result of the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sports which is also enforceable in Nigeria. “The final point to make is that our clients wish to draw the attention of everyone to the fact that the NFF is not an independent association. It is an affiliate of FIFA. By virtue of Article 59, Paragraphs 2 and 3 of FIFA Statutes, FIFA does not tolerate such actions taken by Giwa and his so-called Board to destroy Nigerian football. “Therefore, by virtue of the responsible position Nigeria holds in the Comity of Nations, it would be advisable that the President directs everyone to toe the line of FIFA and respect the final decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sports on this matter, instead of giving vent to the ambition of ONE MAN (Chris Giwa) who wants to bring down the entire edifice of football on all our heads to achieve his selfish ambition.” |

The Brazilian referee that officiated Nigeria's opening World Cup match against Croatia has been hospitalized, according to reports. Russian daily sports newspaper Sport Express says the main referee of the World Cup match between the national teams of Croatia and Nigeria, Sandro Meira Ricci, has been hospitalized. The 43-year-old civil servant has ruptured his ligaments and is presently in the hospital. Only yesterday, Ricci, who was the Video Assistant Referee for England's clash with Tunisia, was embroiled in a fresh controversy after he failed to award a penalty to England, as did the Colombian referee Wilmar Roldan, when Tottenham's Harry Kane was grabbed and knocked over by Sassi inside the area. On Saturday evening, Nigeria were awarded 20 free-kicks, four more than Croatia, with Odion Ighalo giving away three fouls, and Victor Moses and Troost-Ekong two each. Ricci booked only Troost-Ekong in the Nigerian team, while he showed yellow cards to Croatia pair, Ivan Rakitic and Brozović, and he awarded an undisputed penalty to the Balkans after the Bursaspor central defender pulled Mario Mandzukic by the shirt. |
Amid pomp and glitz, but with a full appreciation of the
task at hand, leaders of the South West zone of Nigerian
football on Friday visited the brand new office of the
Western Nigerian Football Forum in Ibadan, and in the
process unveiled the logo and corporate identity for both
the Forum and the fulcrum, the Odua Football League.
NFF President Amaju Pinnick, physically present at the
occasion, lauded both the concept and the work so far
done, saying the move was in the right direction and
challenged the other zones to emulate and create a
healthy competition for which Nigerian Football will be the
ultimate beneficiary.
"I am not surprised because the South West has always
blazed the trail in several respects. When we were growing
up, the name of this place, Cocoa House, rang very loud
and it was the dream of every Nigerian to visit here. You
have shown a clear vision by choosing this place to be
the headquarters.
"Football is about continuity; I pray that successive
administrations in the South West will support and
encourage this project. There is nothing wrong in this
concept; it is only full of positives, including bringing
football closer to the people and engendering a surplus of
talents. It is the same reason why in Africa, we have the
different zones and they have their own calendars and
competitions," said Pinnick, who is also Vice President of
WAFU B.
NFF 1st Vice President Seyi Akinwunmi, who is Chairman
of the Forum, explained that the Odua Football Leagues
would have Under-15, Under-17 and Under-20 categories at
the youth level, with the U23 sector being the Premier
League to which the youth teams' players will aspire.
Akinwunmi revealed that the idea was conceptualised at a
meeting of the South West forum in Abeokuta in 2015,
while commending the support that the concept has
received from the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan
Ogunwusi (who has donated a trophy for the Odua Premier
League) and some other leaders in the zone. He called on
the political, royal and corporate leaders of the zone to
support the project.
The President of NFF, Mr. Amaju Pinnick then unveiled the
logo and corporate identity of the Forum and the League,
saying the concept was capable of fast -tracking the
development of Nigerian Football into a full -blown
industry capable of employing and sustaining the youth - a
position shared by the Acting Director-General of the
Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN), Mr.
Seye Oyeleye.
Both Oyeleye and Hon. Fatai Adesina Salau, Oyo State
Commissioner for Liaison and Special Duties, foresee a
situation whereby the Odua Football Leagues will curtain
social vices by positively and productively engaging the
youth and reducing unemployment in the entire South
West, while at the same time building a large and useful
pool of talented footballers that will take Nigerian Football
to even higher heights of glory.
Pinnick insisted that youth football is the future of Nigerian
Football, and after taking a look around the new offices of
the Western Nigeria Football Forum on the 15th floor of
the iconic building, promised that the NFF will support the
furnishing of the secretariat.
Akinwunmi, also Chairman of the Lagos State FA,
Chairman of the NFF Youth Football Committee and
Member of the CAF Committee on Youth Competitions,
said: "What we are doing is to foster regional integration
while at the same time promoting grassroots football
through which we will produce future stars for Nigeria.
There will be a lot of training programmes including
scouting, coaching and refereeing, and we will invite
people from other zones to benefit from these
programmes. |
Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the
House of Representatives from Lagos State on Saturday
endorsed Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode for a second term in
office.
The APC caucus in the House, led by the Majority Leader,
Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, presented a letter to the governor
at the Lagos House in Alausa, Ikeja, asking him to re-
contest in 2019.
Gbajabiamila said the decision to unanimously endorse
Ambode for a second term was as a result of his brilliant
performance in office in the last two and a half years.
Gbajabiamila said the lawmakers were proud to be
associated with the achievements of the governor so far,
and would be supporting him all the way for another term
in office.
“ We are members of the House of Representatives APC
caucus from Lagos State.
“We all came into Lagos today to perform a very unique
and sacred duty; something we did not take very lightly at
all; something we deliberated over a couple of days ago
and we spoke with one voice.
“Because of the giant strides of our amiable governor in
the last two and a half years in governing the state, we sat
together and we decided without a dissenting voice to seek
his audience and endorse him for re-election in 2019 as the
governor of Lagos State, ” he said.
The House Leader described the endorsement as history
repeating itself, as the caucus was the first to endorse the
governor for election in 2015.
He said it was instructive that there was not a single
dissenting voice in the decision to support Gov. Ambode
for re-election.
Gbajabiamila urged the governor to see the endorsement
as a call to do more for the people of the state, come
2019.
Responding, Ambode thanked the federal legislators for
the honour done to him, saying the endorsement would
spur him to do more for the people.
“ I am greatly humbled to receive the APC caucus in the
House of Representatives from Lagos State.
“I am more delighted that this word of encouragement by
way of this letter is to inspire me further to continue to
render service to the good people of Lagos.
“I want to thank you so much for the honour you have
done me; I receive it with all humility and I pray that God
gives us the grace to actually honour all the letters and the
words in this message,” Ambode said.

overnor Samuel Ortom of Benue state has warned his
counterpart in Plateau state, Simon Lalong to mind his
business.
According to Punch, Ortom asked Lalong not to dabble
into Benue state matters.
This is coming some weeks after the Benue Governor
accepted the apology » that was tendered by Gov. Lalong.
According to reports in the media, Lalong, in the wake of
the Fulani herdsmen killings in Benue, said that he warned
Ortom not to enact the anti-open grazing law.
A statement which the Benue Governor debunked, » saying
“The law is what the Benue people want. Is there any
person in Benue that’s against this law? The answer is no.
I consulted widely and it originated from the people
themselves.”
Recently, Lalong, according to Ortom, mentioned to the
Deputy-Governor of Benue state, Benson Abounu, that he
actually warned the Governor against the law.
Reacting to the Plateau state Governor’s comments,
Ortom said “My deputy told me that he had a discussion
with Lalong recently at a function, where he (Lalong) said
that he had to apologise to me over his statement because
of pressure on him, saying, he stands by his earlier
statement.
“He also told the people that he introduced this woman
(pointing at the woman on the high table) in this
committee to me, whereas, this woman was introduced to
me by Nasir el-Rufai, not him.

following the controversial policy to peg cut-off
marks at 120, Lagos State University has adopted
190 as its cut off point for admission.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor
Olanrewaju Fagbohun on a Talk Radio program, Morning
Digest With Jimi Disu on Tuesday, August 29, said that
the Senate of Lagos State University has decided that the
minimum point for admission in the school be pegged at
190.
"The cut-off point for LASU is 190. If you don't have a
score of 190 you can not even register on the platform, it
wouldn't accept you because it has been programmed for
that. That is the decision of the Senate of the University."
Fagboun further explained that there is a difference
between institutional cut-off and program cut-off saying
that candidates would have to meet both cut-offs to read
the course of their choice at the state university.
"We must also realize that there is a difference between
institutional cut-off and program cut-off. So if you have
the institutional cut off of 190, it allows you to be able to
enter the platform, it now depends on the course you want
to do. If you want to read Law, the cut off for Law may be
270 and if you don't make that 270, you can not go in for
Law. If you want to read Medicine, its cut off may be 275,
if you want to read Chemistry, it may be 250 and at the
end of the day, you will find out that the cut off is always
there.
Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor of Ibrahim Babangida
University, Lapai, Professor Muhammad Nasir has also
announced that the institution has pegged its cut-off point
at 160.
According to Punch the Vice Chancellor said the 120
benchmark is unreasonable.
