http://thenationonlineng.net/new/tinubu-mourns-black-scorpion-adekunle/ National leader of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Bola Tinubu has mourned the death of General Benjamin Adekunle who died on Saturday morning in Lagos. In a statement issued on Saturday, Tinubu noted that Adekunle was a man of valour and unimaginable bravery. “ The Generalissimo has fallen. The Great General Benjamin Adekunle (Rtd.) has left this world and his departure saddens me greatly. “The Civil War Hero was a Soldier’s Soldier. Lion-hearted and a leader of men. He served his Fatherland devotedly and without question when we most needed him. “Like most great men, he was greatly misunderstood. His flamboyant and outspoken nature made him a colourful character. However, that never stopped him from emerging as one of the most remarkable icons in Nigeria’s military history. “The “Black Scorpion” was a man of uncommon intelligence and fierce determination. On the battle field, he had no equal. He represented the best generation of our military personnel. The ones who refused to back down from any enemy; who put their very existence on the line for our continued coexistence. “Of all of Gen. Adekunle’s qualities, it is his loyalty to the flag that I most admire. He was a worthy ambassador of his people and a great example in service. He led from the front. “ Let it be said of Gen. Adekunle: “Here is a man who gave his country the best of his life.” May his warrior soul find rest. And I pray his wife family find the fortitude to bare the irreparable loss,” Tinubu stated. |

http://www.dailytrust.com.ng/daily/top-stories/34190-boko-haram-still-in-charge-in-bama-as-children-women-die-of-hunger The Bama Development Foundation (BADEFO) today said the Federal Government should be sincere in its utterances about happenings in Borno State, stressing that hundreds of women and children that were trapped in Bama town over ten days ago are dying of hunger and stress. The foundation said dead bodies of youths that were massacred by Boko Haram insurgents have decomposed on the streets because no one could bury them. Addressing a press conference in Maiduguri, today, Chairman of BADEFO, Mallam Mohammed A. Hassan said the Wednesday’s utterance by Mr. Mike Omeri, the coordinator of the Federal Information Centre to the effect that Nigerian security forces have taken over Bama from the insurgents was not true. He said hundreds of youths have been killed by the insurgents, many others forced to join the Boko Haram in its fight against the Nigerian state while many others remain trapped in houses where they hid in ceilings. He said Nigerian security forces are yet to return to Bama after they left on Monday, 1stSept, pointing out that the association has evidence to show that the soldiers are still in Konduga town, situated 38 kilometers to Bama from Maiduguri. “The association condemned in strong terms the war by the dreaded insurgents in recent past which continues without apparent measures to contain the activities of the sect, despite Nigerian military’s relentless efforts. “Posterity will not forgive us as a community based organization that is always agitating for development within Bama Local Government to sit on the fence watching conflicting reports from both print and electronic media over the unfortunate situation our good people found themselves. “Since the day of the attack about 11 days ago, Bama, the second largest local government area in Borno State is under the custody and control of the dreaded Boko Haram sect. This is the whole truth and nothing but the truth. As a matter of fact, we are calling on the state and federal government to expedite action towards reclaiming Bama from the hands of terror as those in captivity are under serious trauma, starvation, distressed with serious degree of injuries. “Eleven days after the incidence, no search and rescue operation (was) conducted, no any damage has been assessed, but we are aware that security and welfare of the people is the fundamental obligation of any meaningful government,” he said. The association decried the siege on Gwoza, Ngala, Dikwa and some parts of Yobe and Adamawa States. |

http://www.punchng.com/politics/national-conference-achieved-nothing-junaid-mohammed/ A northern delegate at the just concluded National Conference, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, has described the conference as a waste of time, saying it achieved nothing because President Goodluck Jonathan designed it for political gain. Mohammed, who was a member of the House of Representative in the Second Republic, and currently coordinates, the Coalition of Northern Politicians, Academics, Professionals and Businessmen, argued that the agenda of the different regions of the South failed. He said, “The North did not want the conference because they regarded it as a complete waste of time. Now that the conference has come and gone and nobody can mention anything concrete achieved by the conference, it’s only fair to say that the North was right all along that it was a diversionary tactic, it was not meant to solve any of our problem that is why it achieved nothing. “Those who wanted to use the result of the conference for their own political good, like Goodluck Jonathan and the Peoples Democratic Party have failed woefully. The Igbo wanted to use the conference to achieve their demented agenda of equality or parity between the North-West and the South-East. “If you are to use a serious map that is scientifically based, to show respective areas; where you show the North-West as the palm of a hand, the South-East will only be a dot. The North-West has a population of 40 million and the South-East is less than 15 million. How can you compare the two and attempt to say the two are equal?” Mohammed added that the agenda of the South-West to remove local governments from the constitution, was a plan by the state governors from the region to pocket the money meant for the local government areas. He added, “Clearly the agenda for a state police has failed, the agenda for state constitution has failed, the agenda of scrapping the Land Use Act has failed, so what is there to be said about the whole conference? Nothing.” The northern leader also said the South-South request for resource control also failed and added that the recommendations of the confab would not scale through the National Assembly that has northerners in the majority. He also warned that any of the presidential candidates in 2015 election who commits to maintaining the current revenue allocation formula would not win. He said, “Anybody who commits himself to maintain the preponderance of the Igbo in all our financial agencies, ministries and department will also not win the next election. Goodluck Jonathan has already started boasting that he has given the Igbo more than anybody in the past, for that alone he will not win the next election. If he rigs it, there will be mayhem.” Copyright PUNCH.All rights reserved. |

http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2014/09/09/jonathan-slammed-for-travelling-to-chad-with-modu-sherif/ President Goodluck Jonathan has been criticised for travelling to Chad with the former Governor of Borno State, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, who was recently accused by Australian negotiator, Dr. Stephen Davis, of sponsoring Boko Haram sect. Many Nigerians on social media Tuesday condemned Jonathan, who was in Ndjamena, capital of Chad on Monday to discuss with Chadian president, Idriss Deby on Boko Haram related issues, for allowing Sheriff, who was named a financier of the terrorist sect, to be among the team that followed him to Chad for the crisis talk. Although Sherif has denied the allegations and threatened to sue Davis, many Nigerians wondered how the president could involve the former governor in the talk on how to end the activities of the terrorist sect when he has not been cleared of the alleged crime. Commenting on a related post on Facebook, Adeniyi Farotimi said: “Sheriff has really gone far with his new found home with the presidency. He even followed the president to Chad. Why would Sherif, alleged to be sponsoring Boko Haram, accompany him to Chad? For what? I believe members of Boko Haram are in our government. What happened to the Army Generals for having a link with Boko Haram. I weep for this country.” Another social media user, Mohammed Mustapha, asked: “Why did Sheriff accompany Jonathan to Chad? Did Sheriff go there as a representative of Borno State? What’s the motive behind this trip? Is Sheriff trying to make Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State irrelevant or what? I honestly don’t understand the entire hide and seek game over this national embarrassment. Sheriff should first clear his name and stop hiding under the PDP tattered umbrella.” Also commenting on Facebook, a man who simply identified himself as Adonaid wondered what it would take Jonathan to act on the allegation made against Sheriff by the Australian negotiator. “I cry for Nigeria, the country of my birth. I weep for this so-called Nigeria. Certified criminals are walking on the streets freely while innocent souls are dying in our prisons and police stations every day, all because they committed one minor offence or another. They suffer endlessly because they are nobody and do not have anybody to defend them. But here are big thieves gallivanting all over the world in first-class jets. How can a man accused of sponsoring the Boko Haram sect fly on the same jet with an elected president who should be concerned about the insecurity in the country?” Another social media user, Hamisu, responded: “To those who don’t know, they are all birds of same feather. The worse is yet to come. Why Chad, not Niger? Are the Chibok girls held in Chad?” Victor Vincent disagreed on the negative comments made against Sheriff on his Facebook account: He posted: “When Sherrif was a member of All Progressives Congress, APC, how come nobody said anything negative about him? Why wasn’t he tagged Boko Haram sponsor then? Now that he had dumped APC, he’s now tagged Boko Haram sponsor? If you have an evidence against him, bring it out or stop accusing him of sponsoring terrorism.” Yahaya Terab Kosso, who said he is a Chadian, on the defence of his country, commented: “Chad is offering to help Nigeria rescue the abducted Chibok girls and overcome the rampaging Boko Haram. I don’t think Nigerians are being fair with their president over this issue. They have wrong impression about their president, that’s why they are condemning him. Chadians are not like Nigerians who always say negative things about their leaders. We are not like Nigerians that are selfish, don’t love one another and always dealing with tribalism, religious crisis, etc. Did you ever hear these things happening in Chad. Chad is the heart of Africa! I am proud to be a Chadian.” Sheriff was born into a rich family in Ngala Town, Ngala Local Government Area, Borno State in 1956. His father was a successful businessman Galadima Modu Sheriff. Sheriff studied in Business School of London, where his main subjects were Insurance, Banking and Finance. He became a member of a Social Democratic Party in 1990. In 1997 he joined National Republican Convention. He became a senator representing Borno Central on the platform of the United Nigeria Congress Party, UNCP, during General Sani Abacha’s military regime. After democracy was restored in May 1999, he was again elected Senator, Borno Central, on the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP. Sheriff was elected governor of Borno State in Nigeria in April 2003. He was the first governor in Borno State to win the seat two consecutive times. In 2012 Modu Sheriff was arrested upon entering Cameroon from Chad by neighbouring Cameroon’s security forces, allegedly for his link with Boko Haram. But after some time he was just escorted back to the border of the country. His connection with Boko Haram was not proved.

http://www.punchng.com/news/fight-boko-haram-ohaneze-tells-igbo-in-north/ The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohaneze Ndigbo and the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, Abia State chapter, have urged Igbo people living in the North to stop fleeing the region because of Boko Haram, urging them to stay back and defend themselves. They spoke in reaction to the alleged selective killings of Christians, non-Muslims, and Southerners resident by the Boko Haram insurgents. Speaking with our correspondent in Umuahia, the Chairman of Ohaneze in the state, Dr. Emmanuel Okparanta, said “Ndigbo are very instrumental to the development of Nigeria, and nobody can chase us away from any part of the country because we are one Nigeria, and will continue to be one.” He urged Igbo people living in the North to be vigilant and wise in the face of the worsening security situation in the region. The call re-echoed a position taken by the South-East governors in a their recent meeting in Enugu. A source, who was at the meeting, had confided in our correspondent that though the governors encouraged the Igbo people and Christians living in the North to maintain peace with everybody in their host communities, they asked them not to fold their arms while being attacked. He said, “They should not fight but if there is any attack on them by anybody whatsoever, they should strongly defend themselves because this is one Nigeria and nobody has the right to intimidate anybody.” Also, the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria has asked Northern Christians not to flee but to remain steadfast in spite of the onslaught by the violent sect. The Chairman of the Fellowship in Abia State, Dr. Theophilus Anyimson, said Christians should be vigilant and more serious with prayers against any form of insurgency “but while they pray, they should also open their eyes and resist any attack against them”. “You should take up your arms and defend yourselves; don’t wait to be butchered. As we pray, we should not fold our arms and be killed; we should do whatever we can to defend ourselves”. The PFN also expressed faith in the ability of the Federal Government to contain the security threats in the country. Meanwhile, the Ohaneze Youth Council has described Boko Haram allegations against the immediate past Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika (retd), as laughable and unthinkable. ![]() |

I believe this statement The Senator representing Borno Central at the National Assembly, Ahmed Zannah, on Saturday alerted the military to a plan by the Boko Haram sect to divert their attention away from Maiduguri so as to make the town pregnable. He said the major fighters of Boko Haram had vacated Bama for their Sambisa forest stronghold and might launch a major attack on Maiduguri soon. Zannah toldSUNDAY PUNCHthat Maiduguri remained the ultimate target of the terrorist group and recent indications showed that the sect was arming for the battle to capture the ancient town. He said since the members of the sect were driven out of Maiduguri over a year ago, it had always been in their plan to return to take control of the capital city and had been strategising towards it. The lawmaker had hinted that insurgents made away with equipment and machinery from the military barrack in Bama. He advised the military not to deploy soldiers in Bama to the detriment of the security of Maiduguri. He said, “At present, there are few insurgents left behind in Bama, by their leaders to continue to terrorise the town. The leaders have left for their hideouts in Sambisa. “It is believed that those left in Bama are meant to draw the military out of Maiduguri and when they are reclaiming Bama, the large number of insurgents in Sambisa will sneak into Maiduguri to take control of the town.” Zannah, while calling for further deployment of operatives in the area, said the only way to end the continuous siege was to wage a maximum war against the insurgents. He stated that the military needed more men and equipment in the region. |
