http://thenationonlineng.net/new/boko-haram-holds-bama-as-military-pounds-town/ The battle for Bama, Borno State’s second largest town, which was seized by Boko Haram four days ago, got hotter yesterday. Amid heavy bombardment, the military fought to recover the town. Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Adeshola Amosun, has relocated to Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, to coordinate the air strikes. It was gathered that Boko Haram members have blocked all link roads to Bama. The “push in” by troops had recorded what sources described as “modest gain” but the military was yet to reclaim the town by last night. A top source, who spoke in confidence, said: “The insurgents were still holding on to Bama, they are still in charge. Typical of rag-tag insurgents, they are holding on to the last straws. “But the troops are gaining upper hand through heavy air strikes. We are mostly fighting the battle in the air in Bama and Gwoza. “The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Adeshola Amosun, is personally supervising the aerial battle having relocated to Maiduguri from Abuja since Friday. This underscores the importance attached to the air strikes. “With aerial bombardment, we are hopeful that the troops launching the “push in” will finally take over the town. “The insurgents are feeling the air strikes, they are suffering huge losses. From intelligence report, the bombardments have become unbearable for them and they might vacate the place within the next 24 to 48 hours. “What we need to do now is for troops to gain access by land to Bama and dominate the place. We will reclaim these two towns.” Also yesterday, the military moved fast to unravel the circumstances surrounding the reported desertion of another 400 soldiers. Cameroon’s military claimed yesterday that the Nigerian soldiers are seeking refuge in the country after fleeing from battle with Boko Haram militants in Borno State. The Defence Headquarters (DHQ), sources said, is trying to reach commanders at the “battle front” and may contact Cameroon for details of the matter. Though the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 7 Division in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, was said to have told the military high command that there was no case of desertion, the DHQ is determined to ascertain the veracity of the claim. A source said: “The Defence Headquarters is looking into the claim by Cameroonian Army which is yet to get in touch with us. “So far, the GOC and other officers have claimed that no such incident was reported by troops at the battle front. We have asked them to crosscheck. “We are trying to link up with various units and Cameroon to ascertain the veracity of a report by an international medium. “If it is true, this is the worst form of desertion and it is wrong. If it is true, we are suspecting that the way the first desertion was reported might have encouraged this batch.” Cameroon state radio, the soldiers arrived at the Cameroonian border town of Amchide, where they handed their weapons to military officials. Cameroon military spokesman Colonel Didier Badjeck told the Voice of America (VOA) that the soldiers were accepted in the spirit of fighting Boko Haram alongside Nigerian forces. Speaking in French, Badjeck described challenging situations in war that cause troops to flee, adding that Cameroon had demonstrated that it is a nation that assumes its responsibility to those in harm’s way. Last week 480 Nigerian soldiers crossed over to Cameroon, ostensibly in “hot pursuit of Boko Haram militants.” Two-hundred forty-six of them have since returned to Nigeria, Badjeck said. The DHQ said the development was a tactical manouevre but has made no comment on the latest movement of soldiers across the border. In May, Cameroon’s Information Minister said President Paul Biya and President Goodluck Jonathan, had been communicating as part of a collaborative effort to defeat Boko Haram by sharing intelligence and allowing troops to pursue militants across borders if necessary. Last night, the Federal Government directed massive supply of relief materials to more than 30,000 displaced persons from Bama who are in Maiduguri. A team from the National Emergency Management Agency(NEMA) will deliver the relief items on today. |
http://www.punchng.com/news/igbos-are-better-off-in-my-govt-jonathan/ President Goodluck Jonathan has applauded the attention his administration is giving the Igbos whom he said are well represented in his government and are being appointed to positions which no previous administrations ever gave them. The President also said the Igbos had also benefited from many projects completed by his government in the South-East. He said these during this year’s World Igbo Congress Day in Houston, Texas, United States. The event had held on Saturday, but a copy of the President’s speech at the ceremony was only made available to journalists by the presidential spokesman, Dr. Reuben Abati, on Thursday.$ President Jonathan, who said his administration’s appointments were based on competence, equity and fairness, said he would leave it to historians to determine whose administration had done more for the Igbos in terms of federal appointments. He said, “In the pursuit of productivity and excellence, we have appointed competent and capable men and women to positions of high authority and strategic responsibility in all fields of national endeavour. “In our dogged determination to develop our country, the Igbos are well represented and in some of these appointments, the Igbos are having them for the first time. “Some have said that this government has done more in appointments than any other in our history for the Igbos, but that is a matter for the pundits and historians. Let me state that appointments by this administration, across the country, will continue to be based on equity, fairness and competence. “Even when some utilise politics to undermine our commitment to fairness and justice, we will deploy the principle of Federal Character to progressively correct it. No part of Nigeria under my leadership will be shortchanged.” He added that in terms of projects and policies, the Igbos had benefited from his administration’s commitment Accordingly, the President said his administration had completed many federal roads which were left in bad state by previous administrations. He said, “Similarly in projects and policies, we have continued to do our best. Throughout the South-East, we inherited federal roads in very poor conditions. “In spite of the highly competitive demand and constraints on funding, we have taken on most of the major roads, realising the impact that their improvement will have on business and life in our country. “The Owerri-Onitsha Road, which was under construction at the outset of my administration, has been virtually completed. Three other very important roads, the Enugu-Onitsha expressway, the Enugu–Port Harcourt road and the Nguju-Edda-Nporo-Ohafia road which cuts across Ebonyi and Abia States, are steadily progressing. Our hope is that improved budget and Sure-P funding will see quicker action in the months ahead. “The Obiziora-Iziagu road and Enugu-Abakaliki road are some of those that have progressed to good standard. Further attention will be focused on the Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene road which is already being addressed remedially by the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency. “The Igbos, being a very mobile people, have also benefitted from works in other leading roads nationwide. The Ore-Benin road long known as a deathtrap has been totally transformed and now provides a safer and more reliable ride. The Lagos-Ibadan road is similarly being reconstructed and the Benin-Lokoja-Abuja road is now being dualised as we are doing in other roads in the far North.” The president also applauded the Igbos for their achievements and contributions to the development of Nigeria. “All through our history, the Igbos have cut a distinguishing niche in all aspects of our national life in the areas of education, sports, politics, science and technology, literary excellence, enterprise, diplomacy, among others,” he said. Among whom, dead and living, the President mentioned as starling reflection of Igbos’ achievements and donation to the entire country included, late Biafra warlord, Ikemba Chief (Dim) Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, his father, Chief Louis Ojukwu. They also included Sir Onyechere Anyiam Osigwe, who the President said was the first Nigerian to own an ocean-going crude oil conveying tanker and engage in the crude oil export trade, Dr. Oliver De Coque, Onyeka Onwenu, Chinua Achebe stands tall, supported by Cyprian Ekwensi, Chris Okigbo, Flora Nwakpa, Chimamanda Adichie and Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe. Others are Sam Mbakwe, Akanu Ibiam, Michael Okpara, Jaja Nwachukwu, and Nwankwo Kanu. |

chukwudi44: Can anything good come out of tinubu newspaper? Una no de check the source abi na sauce again?Take that jonathan newspaper http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/senator-zannah-borno-govt-military-are-lying-about-bama/188143/ By Michael Olugbode The senator representing Borno Central at the National Assembly, Ahmed Zannah, has challenged both the Borno State Government and military authorities to take the media to Bama to verify their claims that the state’s second largest town had not been captured by the Boko Haram insurgents. The senator in a telephone chat yesterday with THISDAY said: “As I am speaking to you, Bama has been captured and the insurgents are on the prowl for any male, killing at will.” He added: “Everyone is a target as long as you are male. But for now, women and children are being spared.” Recounting a personal loss, Zannah said he lost two nephews to the insurgents, who according to him, captured Bama on Tuesday. He said: “They entered my brother’s house in Bama and shot his two sons they met at the residence.” Zannah, who is an indigene of Bama, 78 kilometres from Maiduguri, said: “Both the military and Borno State Government are lying to Nigerians, and to prove that I am the one misinforming the public, they should take journalists to the town to cross-check the facts.” ..... “Security sources however said yesterday that the military was firmly in control of the town following air strikes that destroyed the hardware brought in by insurgents from Gwoza, while also destroying the military hardware at the Bama military base to deny the insurgents' access to weapons there. The question is why would NA destroy the military hardware at the Bama military base to deny the insurgents' access to weapons there, if they are truly in control of bama? |
http://thenationonlineng.net/new/troops-battle-boko-haram-to-regain-captured-bama/ The final push to reclaim Bama from Boko Haram insurgents was set to begin last night. Troops were said to have gained access yesterday to “push in” against the insurgents. More fighter jets and sophisticated equipment were deployed in the town, Borno State’s second largest and 67 kilometres to Maiduguri, the state capital. The Brigade Commander of Mohammed Kur Barracks, the Police Area Commander, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and Commandant of MOPOL 53 in Bama have relocated to Maiduguri to re-strategise. Telephone services have gone dead in Bama and its environs following massive destruction of GSM masts in the area and surrounding villages by the insurgents. A source, who spoke in confidence with our correspondent, said: “From the reports available to us, the troops have recorded what strategically we call a ‘push in’ to reclaim the town. “This means that the military has gained access on land and confronting the insurgents. Very soon, the game will change. “The priority now is to regain the control of the army formation in Bama because these insurgents invaded the barracks and targeted the armoury. “They also attacked the police units and sacked these places leaving officers and men to beat a ‘tactical retreat’ to regroup for counter-attacks. Another source said: “We have been engaging the insurgents in air and land encounters since Tuesday. The troops have succeeded in killing many insurgents who are still resilient but they will soon fall. “The Brigade Commander, Police Area Commander, DPO and Commandant of MOPOL 53 in Bama have moved to Maiduguri to coordinate the counter-attacks, which are yielding results. “Until we have fully regained Bama, the military has decided not to talk. It will want to present all evidence of the heroic feats of the troops to Nigerians. More fighter jets and sophisticated equipment were yesterday deployed in Bama. The aerial bombardments has been intense in the last 24 hours with more fighter jets, it was learnt. Troops are said to have got “new and sophisticated” weapons for the battle. “They only need commitment to use the weapons appropriately,” a source said. The telephone service in Bama has been completely cut off because the insurgents destroyed most GSM masts in all the villages and points leading to Bama. Another source added: “The whole situation in Bama is confusing because there is no more telephone service. The insurgents destroyed all GSM masts as part of the ongoing blockade of the area. “Those in Maiduguri were able to communicate with few military officers, troops and security agents at the “battle front” through the Cameroonian MTN network which miraculously has assisted. “So, we have to divert our call through Cameroon through a special link. So, you can imagine the terrible condition the people and residents of Bama are facing.” |
meforyou1: you think igbos are like you that don't have culture? No matter how long it takes, we will wait, and those corpses must go homeWhat kind of stupid culture are you talking about? http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/09/gani-fawehinmi-saw-boko-haram-coming-widow/ LAGOS—AS activists gear up to mark the five years anniversary of the demise of the late foremost human rights activist and Lagos Lawyer, Gani Fawehinmi, SAN, his widow, Ganiyat Fawehinmi, yesterday, said his late husband, foresaw the current Boko Harem insurgency confronting Nigeria before he died. The late activist died on September 5th, 2009. Ganiyat, who spoke at a briefing ahead of the annual three-day memorial programme for the late activist, said “I remember that before my husband died, he warned that if we do not consider issues of insecurity in the country, the country will soon begin to experience bomb blast daily. ”Then people castigated him but today, we are in it. I do not think there is no week we did not hear cases of bomb blast. If they had heeded my husband at that time, we would not be experiencing insurgency at the moment. This was one of the issues he raised before his death. Look at the case of the Chibok girls, who were yet to be rescued and several bomb blasts that had occurred in the country.” Ganiyat blamed President Goodluck Jonathan for the insurgency in the country, saying “I praise the former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, if he was the one still in power, Boko Haram insurgent would have been a thing of the past. The president responded too late on the abduction of the Chibok girls. When his in-law was kidnapped, the president swung into action. And few days after, his in-law was rescued. It means that the president was not protecting the interest of the country and its citizens. If he cannot do it, he should resign from office and allow another person rule this country. We do not need a sleeping president.” “Where is this country going? These were some of the things that my late husband fought for before his death. He wanted everyone to be safe in this country; to enjoy their fundamental human rights. That was why Nigerians are running out of the country because they realized that their life is no longer safe. Wherever we are, we must stand up for the right things. We cannot continue like this. This is the future of the country that is been destroyed. The future Gani Fawehinmis are killed at their tender age. It is sad. |

Stop doing business with ur brothers they are not reliable, the other time it was u and coscharis motors and that is how okoye duped kanu, stop doing business with them. Super Eagle's player, Emenike @ War With Coscharis Over N18m Super Eagles’ striker, Emmanuel Emenike, is in a face-off with a top car company, Coscharis, over a jeep he claimed to have bought for more than $100,000, but which has since developed a fault. The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner striker told MTNFootball.com he is now at a loss as to what to do after the BMW X6 he bought for about N18million developed a problem a year after. And the car company has yet to return the car to him three months after he sent it back for repairs. The Fenerbahce striker is so frustrated about the situation, according to the report, that he has been forced to splash another N10million on a Siena Jeep in the interim. “I am not happy with the way Coscharis (Motor Company) is treating me, I have been so calm with the whole situation for over four months now. They are really holding me to ransom, which is very bad for a reputable organisation like that,” Emenike lamented to MTNFootball.com “I bought a car worth N18m and after a year, it developed a fault. I took the SUV back to Coscharis for repairs. Since I took the car to them for repairs, nothing has been done. They have been giving me unacceptable excuses. “I have told them to return my car so I could take it to Europe and repair or I should add money and take another car, but they have not cooperated in this whole situation,” he added. “They are not just taking me seriously and it’s very annoying. I just need my car back.” |

http://leadership.ng/news/382580/niger-east-election-ibb-abdulsalam-absent-polls The Niger East by-election conducted yesterday witnessed low turnout of voters, even as two former Nigerian leaders, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida and General Abdulsalami Abubakar, did not vote in their hilltop polling unit in Chanchaga local government area of the state. Also, the governor of Niger State, Dr Muazu Babangida Aliyu, did not vote in the bye-election. Aliyu said he could not vote because he forgot his voter card in Abuja and would not want to contravene the electoral rule on “no card, no vote”. The governor said: “I will abide by the electoral rule that states that no one can vote without a voter card. I forgot my voter card in Abuja, which was human error, but I must commend those that came out to vote.” At the hilltop polling unit where IBB and Abdulsalami used to vote, only 135 voters were accredited out of 500 registered voters on the voter list. A check revealed that the two former leaders had travelled out of the state for some engagements, a development which is a departure from previous practice: they always voted in every election in the state. IBB was however in Minna on Thursday where he received APC chairman Chief John Odigie-Oyegun and said his Jummat prayers on Friday. A source said that he travelled out of Minna early Saturday morning for some “pressing issues”. It was not clear when Abdulsalami travelled out of the town, just as none of the family members was also at the polling unit to cast their vote. The turnout generally was low due to heavy rainfall in the early hours of the day, making it difficult for voters to come out early for accreditation. Accreditation time was extended by one hour. The governor, Dr Aliyu, lauded the maturity displayed by voters and the peaceful nature of the polls held in nine local government areas of the state. Aliyu said at the Umar Musa polling unit in front of his personal house that voters also displayed determination to exercise their franchise by coming out in their thousands to cast their votes. He declared, “You can see that even in the rain people still came out to vote. This is commendable.” He added that, with what he saw during the election, democracy has come to stay in the country. Also speaking to newsmen after casting his vote, Barrister David Umaru, the candidate of the APC, commended the determination of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials to try to get it right this time round. Commenting on the low turnout of voters, he said many factors contributed but added that the turnout was not too poor. He kicked against inducement of voters at the polling units. Meanwhile, the police have confirmed the arrest of two people at Tunga Bako in Makunjere Ward of Kagara local government area for trying to snatch a ballot box. The deputy inspector-general of police in charge of ‘B’ operation, Mr Thompson Wakama, told journalists that investigation was ongoing to ascertain the mission of those arrested |

http://www.punchng.com/news/you-are-an-apc-member-adamawa-youths-tell-fintiri/ The Acting Governor of Adamawa State, Alhaji Umaru Fintiri, has been told that he is a member of the All Progressives Congress.Because of this, his accusers say he is not fit to contest for the governorship primary of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state. This accusation was contained in a petition sent to the party’s Screening Panel which is sitting in Abuja on Saturday.Titled “The illegality of the aspiration of the Adamawa State Acting Governor, Ahmadu Umaru under the umbrella of thePDP,” the petition was signed by Ahmed Ya’uba on behalf of the Concerned Youths for Good Governance in Adamawa. The petition read in part, “The fulcrum of democracy is observance of law and order and respect of laid down rules and regulations.“It is also the basis on which our great party, the PDP commands a lot of respect and popular acceptance in this country. It is therefore for this that whenever we see the party being misled to act in contempt of its own spelt out rules and regulations, we as loyal members of the party would have to act quickly to abort subversion of the cherished democratic credentials of the PDP.“It is therefore for this reason that we write to draw the attention of the Screening Committee and other organs of the party’s leadership to the imminent dwindling of the party by the acting governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri who is legally not qualified to vie for the governorship, or any other position for that matter, being a returnee who has not been granted a waiver.“Mr. Chairman, the said Ahmadu Umaru, like many other officials of the last administration of the state, had decamped from our party, the PDP, and subscribed to the APC.“Ahmadu Umaru had actually registered with the APC during its membership drive in February at his KIRSHINGA unit of K/WURO NGAYANDI ward of MADAGALI Local Government”The petition said that having returned to the PDP, Fintiri had not applied for and granted waiver to contest for any position and that because of this, he was not qualified to contest any elective position.“He has also not returned his APC membership card to his ward chairman, thus keeping one of his legs in that party,” the petition added. It added that by the provisions of Section 16 (2) and Section 16 (4) of the PDP constitution as amended, Fintiri has no right to contest for any position under the party’s platform. The petition read further, “It is therefore a misnomer that he is positioning himself as an aspirant for the position of the governor of Adamawa State.“With these available and verifiable facts, we believe that the committee will do the right thing of disqualifying the said aspirant as he is not in any way qualified to contest for anything under the PDP platform, as at this time.” In his reaction, Fintiri said the group was a faceless one, adding that he didn’t belong to the APC.He said in a short statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Solomon Kumangar that the petition should be disregarded. He said, “It has come to our attention that a faceless group under the aegis of Adamawa concerned Youths has written a petition challenging the right of the Governor to seek the ticket of the PDP in the October 11 Gubernatorial bye-election for lack of waiver.“It is pertinent to state here that the whole idea is not only ridiculous but completely untenable. It is also uncharitable to the man whose doggedness made it possible for the PDP to reclaim its stolen mandate in the first place. We dismiss the petition as spurious and without substance because it is the handiwork of those who are afraid that Fintiri stands firmly between them and the ticket.“Fintiri has never been a member of APC because he has always been a member of PDP.” |

http://www.punchng.com/news/fg-wades-into-kogi-anambra-bloody-clashes/ The Federal Government on Friday waded into the bloody clashes that have left scores of people dead in Anambra and Kogi State border communities over oil deposits. Indigenes of two boundary communities of Aguleri in Anambra East Local Government Area and Echeme/Odeke in Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi State have been at loggerheads since 2012 when President Goodluck Jonathan commissioned the Orient Petroleum Refinery located in Aguleri Otu. The clashes have claimed many lives. But Vice President Namadi Sambo on Friday presided over a meeting attended by representatives of the two state governments and the National Boundary Commission with a view to resolving the impasse and restore peace to the affected area. The meeting was held behind closed-doors inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Governor Idris Wada of Kogi State told State House correspondents at the end of the meeting that a lot of progress had been made in an attempt to resolve the matter. While saying that the NBC was tracing the boundary of the affected areas, Wada expressed the hope that the issues would be resolved by the end of the year. He added that every effort is being made to maintain peace and tranquillity in his state. The Anambra State Deputy Governor, Mr. Nkem Okeke, said the resolution of the crisis was foremost on the mind of the governor, Willie Obiano, who he said wanted a quick end to the senseless killings. Okeke said his state was pleased with the level of intervention of the Vice President especially with his directive to the NBC on the matter. He said, “I am here representing my principal, Chief Willie Obiano, who is unavoidably absent because of the burial of Prof. Dora Akunyili. “I think this is one thing that is foremost on his mind to solve. Nobody wants senseless killings, killings for no reason. He sent me here to make sure that we get things moving, and I’m quite pleased with the meeting, with the way the Vice President carried out the meeting. “He gave directive to the National Boundary Commission to set a date to do all the necessary surveys and establish the boundary between us and Kogi State and I believe, in the near future, things will be sorted out.” He said the state government had been ensuring that there is security presence in all parts of the state in order to ensure that people do not encroach on lands not belonging to them. He said the state would continue to collaborate with Kogi State to end the clashes. |
