Health workers at the Ebola Treatment Centre in Lagos have asked the Federal and the Lagos State governments to pay their allowances. According to some of the volunteers who spoke to our correspondent at the Lagos Treatment Centre, on Thursday, they had yet to receive payment for the month of September. One of them, a nurse who spoke on condition of anonymity because he did not want to be single out for sanction, said the health workers received a message from their coordinators that the state government had given directives that operations at the centre be shut down on Thursday, even when their monies had not been paid. The nurse said, “We were told last night that they would shut down the centre on Thursday but they did not mention anything about the money they owe us. “They should settle us because there will be no one to complain to after the centre has been shut down. Everybody is praising Nigeria that it contained Ebola, meanwhile the people that worked are not yet compensated as they should be. We have not even been addressed formally; they just discarded us as if we committed a crime by volunteering.” While doctors at the Ebola centre receive N50,000 per shift, nurses are paid N40,000. Our correspondent, who visited the centre on Thursday, observed that the doors were padlocked and there was no visible activity at the time of the visit. Another volunteer, who is also a nurse called on the Federal Government to address the delay in the payment of their allowances and warned that failure to do so now would discourage people from volunteering in the future. She said, “Government should be responsible. They promised to give us life insurance; we have not heard anything about that. They said they would give us N1m upfront. They have not. We risked our lives, stigma and our livelihood to work here, the least they can do is to pay us as when due. “They were always delaying our payment. But if they are going to shut down, they should pay us for what we tirelessly worked for. If not, nobody will answer or volunteer when next they call.” Calls to the Lagos State Commissioner for Heath, Dr. Jide Idris, were not answered. The Commissioner did not also reply text sent to his mobile phone on this matter. http://www.punchng.com/news/lagos-evd-volunteer-workers-demand-unpaid-allowances/ *I pray and hope that this article is not true. What happened to the 200m given to Lagos State to contain the scourge? All the people involved should ensure that this case is resolved on time to avoid making a big mockery of this laudable fit of containing Ebola in Nigeria. |
Sir, is NYSC more important than what God has in stock for you? Why must you alter ur age just because u want to be part of NYSC? If you alter your age today, it will hunt you tomorrow. Be sincere and upright. Integrity cannot be negotiated. Don't falsify your age. |
Tuesday September 30th, 2014. By KINGSLEY OMONOBI-ABUJA. Aftermath of another heavy defeat of Boko Haram terrorists who Vanguard gathered launched another attack weekend on Konduga in a bid to reclaim the dead body of the impostor of Abubakar Shekau, (Mohammed Bashir), the military has arrested a foreign computer expert who is said to be behind the several video shots sent to online media organization and foreign media houses. He was said to have been arrested with some sophisticated equipment and copies of some of the videos the terrorists had sent to online media houses on their escapades including that of the abducted Chibok girls, iy was leant. Military sources disclosed that the computer analyst who is currently being interrogated was responsible for configuring computer images website and internet accesses that enables the group fight media and psychological operations. Sources said he was arrested after a shootout when a group of the sect members mobilized and attacked Konduga with a view to recovering the body of the impostor for burial in a site they would later earmark as their shrine. Vanguard further gathered that the foreigner has made shocking confessional statements about the terrorist’s plans and modus operandi as well as their backers that would aid the troop’s fast track the routing of the Boko Haram insurgency. “We have made a very big break through; the computer analyst is opening up and has made very big revelations on the modus operandi of the sect”. “We also discovered that the ICT expert is the back bone of the signals and communication links of late impersonator, Mohammed Bashir who always poses as Abubakar Shekau, whenever he is talking on “U” tube”. With the breakthrough, the military is said to be better informed on how the Impostor of Shekau was able to reach out to the world and claim victory over Nigerian troops after several attacks. While confirming that there is a successor crisis in the camp of the terrorists resulting from the death of most of their commanders by troops in Konduga, Vanguard learnt that some terrorists are yet to be disarmed because they were yet to come to terms that their erstwhile leader, Shakau has been killed. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/09/boko-harams-ict-expert-arrested-opens-links-tube/ Back to Top Copyright © 2014 Vanguard News |
Kudos to our gallant soldiers. Certainly this war will be over soon....by the grace of God. However, from which port was that machine cleared? Who collected the duty and levy for the machine and who is the agent that handled the clearing? The last time I checked, there's no company manufacturing such a monster in Nigeria....so how did it get to hands of the sect? God bless Nigeria. |
You are so on point. The place of discipline in the life of any child cannot be over emphasized. The bible says " train up a child in the way he should go, so that when he is old he will not depart from it" Whatever needs to be done in order to raise reliable and responsible children should be done. Tomorrow they will thank you for giving them the best training. Remember " spare the rod and spoil the child" Also giving a child anything he wants is not good. Just ensure that they have the basic needs of life and make them appreciate every bit of it. |
I have always known that Tambuwal has an agenda. He is playing a script.....he has always been critical of his paymasters. Unfortunately, it might not play out as his emergence as the speaker. He stands no chance to contest on the platform of PDP. The only option is to defect to APC.....and I am afraid he might not do that because of the lessons he learnt from his brother- RIBADU |
emmatony: By Michael Olugbodeit is quite pathetic how we unconsciously support boko Haram by our utterances and false information . It is also pathetic how our journalists via media houses give credence to false information. what happens to investigative journalism? All these arm chair journalists simply "copy and paste" unsubstantiated information from foreign media houses. Our journalists should be held responsible for giving boko Haram unsolicited publicity, thereby sending shivers to the populace. What happens to giving a balanced account of every story instead of being sympathetic to the boko Haram course? Why must BBC (Hausa report) and Sahara reporters always quote the likes of senator Zanna, El Rufai and co as their source? Is there any conspiracy theory here? The opposition is the one clearly fuelling this falsehood. They don't see anything good in this administration. We must win this war against the insurgents by all means.....media wise, assault wise, combat wise......any which way. Nigeria must "know" peace again. Nigeria will survive this crises. Nigeria - good people, great nation. Disclaimer: A balanced view of a patriotic Nigerian with no political affiliation. God bless Nigeria. |
No new confirmed Ebola case – Health Minister The Minister of Health Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu has said that there is no new confirmed case of Ebola disease in the country, contrary to reports that five new cases had been observed in Lagos. The minister, in a tweet on Wednesday by his Special Assistant on Media and Communication, Dan Nwomeh, explained that so far, no new case had been confirmed. In an email, Nwomeh referred our correspondent to the twitter handle @DanNwomeh, for what he called, “updates and clarifications of (mis)information on the fight against Ebola Virus Disease in Nigeria. “Meanwhile as at today, the status remains the same. Disregard all rumours of new cases please,” he further said. The tweet read, “This clarification follows reports of 5 new cases in Lagos State. This should be disregarded please. “The Minister of Health reiterates that he has the sole authority to announce confirmed cases of disease epidemics in Nigeria. “The minister reassures Nigerians that any new confirmed case of EVD in Nigeria will be announced by his office promptly. “Any doubtful information on the outbreak of EVD should be verified from the office of the Minister of Health. “Minister of Health Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu restates that at present, today, now, Nigeria has only two confirmed cases of Ebola Virus Disease.” He also stated that there was no evidence that discharged patients can transmit the disease, adding that a Liberian whose name he did not disclose, was treated for malaria “having tested negative for Ebola Virus Disease.” Minister of Health Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu restates that at present, today, now, Nigeria has only two confirmed cases of Ebola Virus Disease. — Dan Nwomeh (@DanNwomeh) August 20, 2014 http://www.punchng.com/politics/no-new-confirmed-ebola-case-health-minister/ |
blueto: what a pity. She was discharged 2 days ago, when the nigerian health officials said she had recovered. But, she is now deadOga, stop spreading FALSE news. She was never discharged from the facility. Infact the infectious disease control centre had to debunk the rumour. Such deadly rumours like the salt treatment are some of the disadvantages of every Tom, Dick and Harry having access to social media. There's a standard internationally approved modalities for certifying and discharging Ebola patients. Pls get your facts right.... |

Sir, what kind of advice do u want? If u were to advise someone on this issue, what would you tell the person? The signs are quite glaring and very obvious. Don't think with your heart or your third leg...think with your HEAD. It is better you call it bluff and move on now that God has been so merciful to reveal her true colour to you. However, if you decide to reignite your "professed" love for her.....don't come back here and disturb us for advise tomorrow and let me not see you on the suicide list. We have enough problem in this country already...don't add more to your own. |
Anambra carries out first heart surgery Anambra State has begun a heart surgery programme at St. Joseph Specialist Hospital, Adazi Nnukwu. It said the surgery is being carried out by a team of 15 doctors and medical workers, led by a cardiac surgeon, Dr. Joseph Nwiloh, who is an indigene based in the United States (U.S.). The first surgery was reportedly carried out last Saturday. A statement said Nwiloh is globally regarded as one of the best cardiac surgeons. The building housing the heart clinic was named after him by the former governor, Mr. Peter Obi. The hospital was reportedly built “as a way of celebrating worthy Anambra sons and daughters and hold them out as role models for the young.” Nwiloh, who helped in equipping the centre, thanked God for His mercies and Obi for his vision. He promised to work harder to make the centre fully functional. Obi, who witness the first surgery last Saturday, said he was happy at the “many fruits of the collaboration between the church and the government.” He said he was happier that his successor, Governor Willie Obiano, continued with the collaboration, adding that the ultimate beneficiaries are the people. The President General of Adazi Nnukwu, Mr. Ben Enemuo, who spoke about the operation, said the town’s people were happy at the development. He thanked God for using Obi to initiate the heart centre and praised his successor for the promise to build on the foundation. Former Commissioner for Health, Dr. Lawrence Ikeakor, who visited the hospital to witness the surgery, said with the development, Nigerians need not travel outside the country again for categories of heart diseases requiring surgery.” The first surgery was reportedly carried out last Saturday http://thenationonlineng.net/new/anambra-carries-out-first-heart-surgery |
Jonathan, Shettima meet over Boko Haram’s Damboa massacre •Military: we won’t allow hoisting of strange flags in any part of Nigeria Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima met with President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja on Friday, pleading for assistance to stop the rampaging Boko Haram insurgents. More than 300 peoples, including a Lieutenant-Colonel, have been killed by the insurgents in the last three weeks in Damboa. The daring insurgents have also served notices of attacks on nine other towns. But the military yesterday stepped up activities against the sect and ordered troops to rout out Boko Haram from Damboa. The Defence Headquarters said it would not allow any group to annex any part of Nigeria or hoist a strange flag. According to sources, Shettima had a closed door session with the President at night on Friday on the security challenges facing the state. The two leaders locked themselves up for about 45 minutes without any of their aides present. A source said: “The meeting had to do with the security situation in the state, especially attacks on Damboa and the withdrawal of troops from the area by military authorities. “The death toll had made the governor sad, in spite of the huge investment in security apparatchik in the state. “The military is unhappy that some local collaborators played key roles in the ambush of troops on July 4 which led to the killing of a Lieutenant Colonel in a tank by some suicide bombers. “The governor came to beg for more military intervention to save the state. No leader will be happy seeing his people being killed like fowls. And the President reassured the governor that more actions will be taken. “As if the assault on Damboa was not enough, the insurgents have served notices of attacks on nine more towns. It is like a part of Borno is under siege again after the gains made by the military. “I think they also had discussions on the fate of the Chibok girls and the President’s proposed meeting with some of the parents of the abducted girls and those who escaped.” Neither the Presidency nor Borno State government was willing to reveal the details of the meeting. When contacted, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati confirmed that the President met with the governor. Also, a top government official in Borno State confirmed that the governor met with the President on Friday night. Barely 48 hours after the meeting, the military yesterday stepped up activities against the sect and ordered troops to rout out Boko Haram from Damboa. The Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Chris Olukolade, who spoke with our correspondent, said the military had ordered troops to firm up activities against the sect in Damboa and other vulnerable areas. He said: “We have put in place necessary machinery, including the patrol of vulnerable areas, to check the insurgents. Activities are being stepped up to curtail the menace.” Asked in what manner the activities had been stepped up, he replied: “I won’t go into details on the actions we have taken. I cannot disclose military plans. “We will not say when troops will take charge of Damboa to avoid a repeat of the last ambush of these committed and loyal soldiers. But we are firming up deployment of troops to Damboa and other places. “We are ready for the insurgents but we will prefer to keep our strategies to ourselves because of the nature of the battle ahead.” Pressed to talk on the hoisting of flags in Damboa by Boko Haram, Brig.-Gen. Olukolade said:”From intelligence report, no hoisting of the flags was noticed in the sense that people are creating the impression. One or two persons may have hoisted flags in their compounds “The Nigerian military will deny them any freedom of action against the people this country. “Let me assure you that the military will not allow any portion of this country to bear any strange flag.” Jonathan, Shettima meet over Boko Haram’s Damboa massacre 6 hours ago •Military: we won’t allow hoisting of strange flags in any part of Nigeria Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima met with President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja on Friday, pleading for assistance to stop the rampaging Boko Haram insurgents. Smartsyn: So Arsenal has sign Khedira, what a great news..Here they come...... always awake.....never sleeping..... With one well defined agenda : to detail thread. Thank God they chose a good topic ....football. |
They always arrive in groups... Sometimes as e-rodents with Ebola virus infested views. They will hijack your thread and turn it to something else... Mr. Osewa, is it possible to create a section for the derailers ? I know they will soon come here. |
You people should stop this cheap blackmail. A complete team is made up of both the coaching crew, the players and the goal keeper. Don't expect to put a player in the post as the goal keeper and don't expect the goal keeper to play as a striker. They all work together as a strong indivisible formidable team. The nurse that prescribed the "rubbish" could be an auxiliary nurse and not a qualified nurse. What do you have to say about senior nursing officers that teach some doctors how to handle some medical issues? They must work as a team and if you rise to the position of occupying a leadership post in the system, nothing will stop you - whether you are a pharmacist , nurse, med lab scientist etc. So long as you got there by merit and good track record. In a football team, anybody can be the captain....goal keepers, defenders, midfielders and strikers. The condition are : 1• your wealth of experience 2• years of service 3• contribution to the success of the team. These doctors should go and reflect on the oath they took and stop being "killers in robes" If they are duly registered as a labour group, why not approach NIC for settlement of dispute, just like JOHESU did. Disclaimer: The opinion above is my personal view as a good Nigerian. I am a seasoned banker and successful business entrepreneur. No body should think that I am a member of JOHESU. |
100% TRUE! |
Why are these doctors playing with the lives of innocent Nigerians......they took an oath abi oaths to sanctity of live....why are they the ones killing those that they are paid to take care of ? These guys(the selfish ones among them) are killers in robes. The FG should disband that useless and power drunk society. It is obvious that they make more money during strikes as they direct patients to their clinics. God will save Nigeria. |
NMA strike ends on Monday, says Health Minister The Federal Government on Friday expressed optimism that the ongoing strike action by the Nigerian Medical Association would be called of on Monday (next week) at the end of the association’s Emergency Delegates Meeting. “I also want to remind all health workers that the ethics of their professions dictates that at all times emergency care must not be denied to those that need them. I thank you all,” the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, stated during a press briefing in Abuja to convey government’s update on the strike. While describing the strike as “unnecessary,” he said “almost all the issues in contention were either issues that had been satisfactorily resolved or issues that could be treated merely through administrative mechanism.” Chukwu said he had expected the NMA to respond and attend to all emergency cases in public hospitals “in the spirit of this understanding.” http://www.punchng.com/news/nma-strike-ends-on-monday-says-health-minister/ |
Security forces bust Boko Haram’s intelligence network Security forces have bust a Boko Haram intelligence cell headed by a businessman, Babuji Ya’ari, who participated actively in the abduction of over 200 school girls in Chibok in April, 2014. Ya’ari who is also a member of the Youth Vigilante Group popularly known as Civilian JTF which he used as cover while remaining an active terrorist, also spearheaded the murder of the Emir of Gwoza. A statement by the Director, Defense Information, Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade in Abuja on Monday, said the suspect’s main role in the group was to spy and gather information for the terrorists group. “Babuji has been coordinating several deadly attacks in Maiduguri since 2011, including the daring attacks on Customs and military locations as well as the planting of IEDs in several locations in the town,” it said. Olukolade said the arrest of the businessman who is known to deal in tricycles, has also yielded some vital information and facilitated the arrest of other members of the terrorists’ intelligence cell who are women. He stated that one of them, Hafsat Bako had earlier escaped to Gombe State to avoid suspicion but was tracked and arrested. According to him, prior to her arrest, Bako coordinated the payment of other operatives on the payroll of the group, adding that in her confession, she disclosed that a minimum of N10,000 is paid to each operative depending on the enormity of his task. Olukolade said, “Another female suspect named Haj Kaka who doubles as an armourer and a spy for the terrorists group has also been arrested. “Until their arrest, all the suspects actively operated a terrorists’ intelligence cell in collaboration with others still at large.” In another development, troops deployed in Goniri, Yobe State, had an encounter with terrorists, resulting in casualties on both sides after the attack was successfully repelled. http://www.punchng.com/news/security-forces-bust-boko-harams-intelligence-network/ |
Evergreen123: These johesu ppl here are not ashamed that a non medical staff is putting them to order.sorry sir. your point isn't clear enough. I strongly believe that NMA is messing up because the FG thru the minister of health is giving them so much attention. What we are talking about here is regulation of equipments used by these professionals- Lab scientists and not the one used by doctors. The in-fighting in the health sector is alarming. If they can't hold a strong front within them, how can they collectively fight for a common goal. Initially their strike was for better condition of service, better remuneration, better facilities in our hospitals.....these fights went on for a long time at the expense of the poor patients. Why would the poor masses still suffer when the doctors are fighting their colleagues. |
Demdem: Am not a medical professional and at the same time not a novice. Of cos I know who consultants are and I know fully well what they are subjected to to achieved such.Sir, I beg to differ on that. Let them stop this comparison of who is superior or not and face the oath of the profession. Sanctity of life should not be toiled with. Talking of sacrifice.....what sacrifice are they making that is out of this world? Remember, they are paid all sorts of allowances which people in other sectors don't get. The salary and allowance they get is commensurate with the sacrifice they make. If every sector should claim superiority over another, there will be wahala. Please note that they are not agitating for salary increment cos I believe they are well paid......they are simply fighting their colleagues in the health sector. If you talk of sacrifice, why not talk about our military men who risk their lives on daily basis to protect the territorial integrity of the nation. They should just put their house in order. They are simply holding the nation to ransome because the presidency is tolerating their rubbish. |
Lab scientists slam doctors’ position on IVD importation 1 hour ago …NMA may begin strike tomorrow The Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, AMLSN, has condemned doctors in the country for their opposition to a recent circular issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, authorising it to regulate the importation of In-Vitro Diagnostics, IVDs, into Nigeria. The group stated this at a briefing in Abuja at the weekend, through its President, Dr. Godswill Okara. The CBN had recently issued a circular demanding that the laboratory scientists take up the responsibility of regulating the importation of IVDs, which hitherto had been done by the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria, SON. But doctors, under the aegis of the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, had kicked against the CBN’s directive, urging the apex bank to withdraw the circular. The NMA, through its president, Kayode Obembe, threatened that doctors across the country would down tools, if the CBN refused to withdraw the circular. The planned strike might begin tomorrow, as the doctors’ two-week ultimatum on the matter and other demands from government, ends today. IVDs comprise diagnostic apparatus, namely reagent product, reagent, chemical calibrator, controlled material, kit, instrument, apparatus equipment or system, whether used alone or in combination, intended by the manufacturer to be used in-vitro for the examination of specimens, including blood and tissue donations derived from the human body, solely or principally for the purpose of providing information for diagnoses and treatment. “It is on record that close to 50 per cent of public health in-vitro diagnostics, reagent test kits, chemical and equipment in the Nigerian today are sub-standard, fake, expired or poorly stored and distributed. “It was in order to stem this ugly trend that the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria, in keeping with her statutory mandate and the Transformation Agenda of Mr. President. decided to set up the ultra-modern Public Health In-vitro Diagnostic Control Laboratory in Nigeria, the first of such a specialised laboratory in Africa,” the association said. http://nationalmirroronline.net/new/lab-scientists-slam-doctors-position-on-ivd-importation/ |
Three feared killed as regrouping militants clash 3 hours ago There is strong indication that unrepentant militants have started to regroup in the creeks of the Niger Delta region, particularly in the mangrove forest of Bayelsa State. It was learnt that already supremacy battles and scrambling for operational bases among leaders of the emerging militant groups have begun. The scrambling was said to have triggered a bloody clash between two militant groups intending to operate at the Gbarain area of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state. Three militants were feared killed in the clash and many others allegedly sustained severe injuries. A security source told our correspondent on condition of anonymity that members of the two militant groups engaged one another in a fierce battle that lasted for hours. The security personnel said sophisticated weapons including AK47 riffles were reportedly used in the creek warfare that threw the communities around Gbarain into pandemonium. The sporadic gunshots fired by the contending militants were said to have created panic as some of the residents chose to flee the area for the time being. A resident in one of the surrounding communities said after the battle, three militants belonging to one of the camps were reportedly gunned down by the rival group. The resident, who wished to be anonymous for safety reasons, said, “The leader of one of the camps is very notorious. He is known in the creeks but we are keeping his name under wraps. It was a fierce battle caused by sharing of territories. “The notorious leader accused his counterpart of trespassing into his territory. The development led to the bloody clash. Three militants were killed and many were severely injured.” When contacted, Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hilary Opara, said he had yet to be briefed on the development by the Divisional Police Officers in the areas. He, however, said the police in the state had been mopping up arms in various cities and creeks in the state. “We are sanitising the state by mopping up arms. We do it on a daily basis and the arms we have recovered are with us,” Opara said. In his reaction, Media Coordinator, Joint Military Task Force in the Niger Delta, Operation Pulo Shield, Lt.-Col. Mustapha Anka said he had not been briefed on the clash. http://www.punchng.com/news/three-feared-killed-as-regrouping-militants-clash/ |
Lagos car blast: Fashola urges vigilance on june 29, 2014 at 10:00 am in new. *Celebrates 51 years birthday with visually impaired students BY MONSURU OLOWOOPEJO Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, yesterday, celebrated his 51st birthday, urging residents to be vigilant and engage any stranger in their neighborhood, to know the reason for his visit to the community. This came barely days after a car bomb explosion occurred at the Apapa axis of the state, killing about four persons and injuring others. Fashola made the appeal at the commissioning of the ‘Fountain of Life Church’ main auditorium, owned by Pastor Taiwo Odukoya in Ilupeju axis of the state, which also had in attendance the minister for communication and technology, Dr. Omobola Johnson, Bishop David Oyedepo and others. Speaking after receiving a birthday gift from the church, the governor said that if Lagosians are vigilant and adaptive to their community, the challenges of insecurity would end. The scene of the blast at Apapa. “We will overcome the challenges by been vigilant and adaptive. By asking questions of things that are not normal. Things that failed to follow the original conduct of human behavior. By asking question from people who are strangers in our mist seeking to know where they came from and what their purpose was among us,” he said. “We must no longer keep quite. I am sure that if we do these simple things, all will be well with us.” Fashola however tasked residents to continue to live in peace and harmony irrespective of what whatever happens. His words, “By our action we will show that we have voted to live together; to live in peace and to respect one another’s choices. And it is from that respect that we can earn trust of one another and keep this state together.” The governor advocated that religious organization should partner the government in eradicating poverty in the country, saying “constructing and engaging residents, are good means of reducing employment.” He added, “This is the partnership that must exist between the government and the people of different faiths. Religious organization in other advanced countries own business to support their government to provide job and keep the economy going.” ON HIS BIRTHDAY While celebrating his 51th birthday with students of the Nigerian Society for the Blind, Oshodi, Fashola said “As I was planning what to do today, I remembered that I have an unfinished business here: the promises I made earlier, to assist the visually impaired. I was not forced to make them.” He noted that this was why the state government committed about N51 million into the construction of the vocational centre for residents who are visually impaired. source: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/06/lagos-car-blast-fashola-urges-vigilance/ |
Saturday June 28th, 2014 10 killed in Bauchi bomb blast An explosion in the red light district of Bauchi city has killed 10 people and injured 14 others, police said Saturday. The cause of the late Friday blast was not immediately clear, but Boko Haram Islamists have attacked Bauchi repeatedly during their five-year uprising aimed at creating a strict Islamic state in the north. Bauchi state police spokesman Mohammed Haruna said the targeted building in the Bayan Gari neighbourhood on the outskirts of the city was widely known as a brothel. “Ten people were confirmed dead, while 14 others sustained various degrees of injury,” Haruna said, adding that the explosion went off at roughly 10:00 pm (2100 GMT). “The entire area has been cordoned off and (the) scene secured,” Haruna said. Bomb attacks on targets which Boko Haram has branded sinful – including bars, churches and schools teaching a Western curriculum – have formed a major part of the insurgency. Nigeria has estimated that more than 10,000 people have been killed since the conflict began in 2009. The violence has escalated in recent months, with more than 2,000 deaths recorded since the start of the year. The capital Abuja has been hit with three separate bomb attacks since mid-April, most recently on Wednesday when 24 people were killed in a blast at a popular shopping plaza in the heart of the city. Police had initially given a death toll of 21 for the attack, but the health ministry revised those figures upwards on Saturday. In Kano, the largest city in the mainly Muslim north, a bomb planted in the parking lot of a public health college killed eight people on Monday. The Islamist extremists have received unprecedented international attention in recent weeks following their April 14 abduction of more than 200 teenage girls from the town of Chibok in the northeast. The gruesome mass abduction has drawn condemnation from governments and prominent people worldwide and offers of military help from major world powers to boost Nigeria’s counter-insurgency. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/06/10-killed-bauchi-bomb-blast/ |
Sahara Reporters and Premium Times...why are you guys always at the centre of controversies ssurrounding public officers? I would have thought that the FOI would make journalism in Nigeria more pprofessional and well detailed. Unfortunately it has turned journalism to a WMD in the hands of the opposition. I stand to be corrected. All those e-warriors....don't even attack me. I am only a concerned and neutral Nigerian. Na my oservation be that oo |
Sensational journalism. I read thru the entire piece and also listened to the clip but I did not hear where the president made such comments. His remark was that when compared to other countries that are being hit by terrorism, we are better off. He also said that the govt is trying but that more still needs to be done |
Lets see how this plays out. "He that comes to equity must come with clean hands." |
