The daughter of former Gombe Governor Danjuma Goje, Hussaina, on Saturday resigned as the state’s Commissioner for Environment and Forest Resources, a day after suspected political thugs assaulted her father.

Mr Goje, who is a serving senator, has a political rift with incumbent Governor Muhammadu Yahaya.

In a press statement she made available to journalists in Gombe on Saturday, Ms Goje said her resignation was a personal decision.

“Today, Saturday 6th of November, I wish to inform the general public and media organisations that I, Dr Husaina Goje, has tendered my formal resignation, from my position as Commissioner for Environment and Forest Resources to His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, effective today.

“I also wish to inform that my resignation was made based on my personal reasons, with this I wish to show my appreciation for the opportunity given to me by His Excellency the executive governor to serve as a member of his executive council in this administration.”

On Friday, the convoy of her father, Mr Goje, was attacked by suspected political thugs while the senator was on his way to the state capital to attend a wedding.

According to residents who witnessed the incident, the suspected thugs blocked the Gombe-Bauchi highway near the International Conference Centre in Gombe and set bonfires on the road.

Mr Goje’s media aide, Lilian Nworie, in a statement she issued after the incident in Gombe in Gombe, said Mr Goje accused the aide-de-camp of the governor of organising the blockade and attack on his convoy.

“He arrived Gombe from Abuja, via Gombe Airport in Lawanti, peacefully until the governor’s aides blocked the road,” the statement said.

“The distinguished senator’s trip was peaceful until when the governor’s aides, including his aide-de-camp and his driver, blocked the road. For two hours, they unleashed terror on Senator Goje and those in his convoy.

“It is unfortunate that one life was lost and many cars vandalised, including the Senator’s vehicle. They smashed the windscreen.

“All efforts to make the governor’s aide-de-camp remove the blockade yielded no result as he insisted that he got instruction from above that the former governor should not be allowed into the town,” the media aide said in the statement.



Reacting to the incident, the state government said the former governor “caused a breach of peace in the state capital with his visit to the state.”

In a press statement signed by the State Commissioner for Information and Culture, Julius Ishaya, the government accused Mr Goje of mobilising and arming thugs from various LGAs under the pretext that his supporters were accompanying him from the airport into the state capital.

“Recall that during the last Eid el-Kabir Sallah celebration, the same person sponsored some thugs that threw caution into the wind and went on a rampage, leading to the loss of two lives. Also, just last week at Deba in Yamaltu Deba LGA, the same scenario played out at the instance of the Senator.

“It is sad that Goje has not left his old ways and is bent on bringing back his brainchild (Kalare) to unleash mayhem and bug the peaceful atmosphere of Gombe State.

“Gombe state has been witnessing relative peace and harmony due largely to the determination and avowed commitment of Governor Inuwa Yahaya in that direction and therefore the government would not stand by and watch desperate politicians unleash terror and violence on innocent citizens to the extent of getting people killed.

“While sympathising with the families of the victims, Government commends the security agencies for their timely intervention in bringing the ugly situation under control.

“His Excellency, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, as the Chief Security Officer of the State, will not renege on his responsibilities and therefore will do everything necessary to protect the lives and property of the citizenry. The government will make sure that perpetrators of the unfortunate act, no matter how highly placed, are brought to book,” the statement said.

Mr Goje and the governor are members of the same ruling All Progressives Congress, which took over the state from the Peoples Democratic Party at the 2019 general elections.

He noted that some of the implications of the social vice included lack of academic focus, unexpected pregnancy, and falling prey to ritualists.

Alison applauded some tertiary institutions’ Guidance and Counselling Departments for their efforts in sensitising students against the viral practice, adding that more efforts should be channelled to eradicate it.

“Many schools have Guidance and Counselling Department which, from time to time, organise seminars, campaigns and publicity, to discourage the act among students,” he said.

Sunday Afolabi of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) observed hook up from another perspective. According to him, many people believe that poverty is the major reason ladies, especially students, engage in it. However, some students have their basic needs, yet they still indulge in such as a result of greed.

“They sell their bodies for money to portray a flashy and obtrusive lifestyle by buying designer shoes and bags and using the latest smartphone. Undoubtedly, greed and peer pressure also contribute to it as well,” he said.

While describing its consequences as disastrous and destructive, he craved more grants and scholarships for tertiary institution students to stem the tide.

“As we all know, every action has its consequences, those engaging in this act are exposing themselves to sexual violence, unwanted pregnancy, and sexually transmitted infections.

“To stem the tide, some institutions should give scholarships to students who are experiencing financial hardship and create awareness to discourage this act as well,” he said.

Okon Joel, a 400-Level student of Geology, Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, noted that desperation and the urge to belong were part of the causes of ‘hook up’.

He said: “For me, it’s the urge to belong that’s causing the rise in ‘hook up’ in tertiary institutions. Some ladies want to feel among, they want their presence to be felt, they want to have their names on the lips of every passerby, without having to think of the repercussion.

“This can be likened to ‘peer pressure’ and its influence. Some people have caged themselves in friendships that make them find it difficult to decipher what’s good or bad. Since it can satisfy their cravings, they’re in for it and can go the extra mile to get what they want.

Desperation is not left out; that urge to live large and be seen as such has turned many into something else. They want to oppress any and everybody.”

Joel, who described hook up eradication as a gradual process, said: “I would say the institution (FUOYE) has always cautioned against such practice, through organising sensitisation programmes, displaying banners and stickers at strategic places that talk about social vices and the need to be cautious, especially as it relates to prostitution. I’m sure the authorities of various campuses are aware of the recent trend and would work towards curbing it. Mind you, to get rid of this would take a lot of time. It’s a gradual process.”

For Makinde Damilola of the Department of English Education, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA), ‘hook up’ is an advanced form of prostitution, mostly caused by poverty.

According to her, many students engage in hook up due to financial difficulty.

“I see it as an advanced form of prostitution. Some parents tend not to understand or care about what their wards are facing in school in terms of basic needs. So many lecturers and politicians in the name of helping out spoil the lives of young women. So many female students are pressurised into doing it. Female students tend to gain nothing because it is to their detriment. The so-called people in higher positions will have fun with them and still do the worse to them. It is pathetic!

“However, I am not sure and I don’t think institutions are making it a point of duty to stop this disgraceful act because it occurs at an alarming rate. It is no joke at all.”

Ayantoye Victoria, a 200-Level student of the Department of Law, University of Lagos, said: “This hook up of a thing has been a serious issue that young women adopt as a source of income and it has become worse to the point that guys are doing hook up for their sugar mommies and they are getting paid for it.

Her words: “There is a need for orientation of students, especially the female folk. Students must learn to embrace morals without compromise even in the face of adversities. Instead of degrading ourselves and reducing our worth, we should engage in productive ventures devoid of immorality.

A 300-Level student of the Department of History and International Studies, Ebonyi State University, Ihuoma Blessing, said: “Sex has become cheap and easy to get from female students of higher institutions. Creating this thread has been on my mind for a long time but for some reasons I kept shelving it but after coming across a thread on front page about a 41 year old single lady asking for advise I think it is about time I drop this.

1. Understand that not everybody will get married:

Marriage is not a do or die thing... Marriage does not define who you are and you must never be bothered by what people say cos most of them are Clueless about the institution of marriage. Those who truly understand will never look down on you because you are single. Your happiness is more important than marriage.

2. Be financially independent: Any single lady in her late 30s should never make it a priority to get married cos the more you worry about it the more pressure you put on yourself and this is bad for your psych.

At this stage of your life, self actualization is what you need and trust me, by the time you make it a priority to get the best out of life, this will inadvertently gravitate men to you.

Before I give this third advise let me share this very touching story...

I remember a certain Nairalander who contacted me about 6years ago and she said she has made up her mind to be a single mum if she turns 36 and she is still unmarried and asking me to be ready to donate sperm for her cos she sees me as a responsible guy... Furthermore, she will not put any pressure on me to be financially responsible for the child as she is well to do but she just want to have a child to avoid a situation where she will reach menopause and still childless.
