No, by region I'm talking of Africa. Depending on which country in sub-Saharan Africa and not just west Africa the Tucano may suffice as some of these countries pose no credible threat. Some have planes but have no Air Force. Nigeria has other assets other than the JF-17 thunders to meet some of the threats that currently exist. The JF-17 thunder will be an over-kill for some of these countries.

*North Africa = Rafale + F16 + Sukhoi Su-30 + MiG 29

*Southern Africa = Gripen C/D + Sukhoi Su-30

*East Africa = Sukhoi Su-30

*Central Africa = MiG 29

Where's the envy? South Africa had an indeginoius MRAP in 1974, we literally wrote the book on these vehicles. We still the only country in the world where every wheeled military vehicle was an MRAP, from horse transport vehicles, ambulance, water tank and everything in between.

We have produced and exported 1000s of these vehicles, we have over 20 models on the market.... If you wish to celebrate about 1 model then go ahead it's your own archivement, we threw that party in 1974.

Second time I see the white panels, I'm not sure if it's the same Oryx. My take was they could be glass could be acting as temporal glass replacement since the birds are no longer in production, there's no off-the-shelf parts and the supplier may need a considerable order to produce again.

That's a great aircraft on its own right however it shouldn't be compared to the Gripen. As jln115 said, the Gripen is faster, carries more weapons and flys further than the TA-50. Technically it's a "poorman's" fighter.

And this whole "Americans are using Toyota as well" in Syria talk.... Some people need to educate themselves a few things;

1. The US has a small contingency of operators in Syria, flying in the "MRAPs" requires the whole mechanical shop of logistics support which is not relevant because they're only providing CAS and specialised missions to allied forces... So the logic is to use what is easily available on the territory ie Toyotas.

2. Showing up in an Uncle Sam made MRAP while doing support makes you a special target for your enemy while you're mobile so just blend in as well just like with local vehicles.... A similar example would be when white South African soldiers ended up painting themselves black to avoid being selectively tagged during bush patrol ambushes.

You sir,know of what you speak! Consider also the weight implications of a future RPG cage. You'll add minimum a 1.5 tons ,maybe 2 tons depending on the steel alloy used. You all do know these days everyone has the latest RPG including the 29 series;the RPG 7 shown here is considered obsolete even by the ragged mofos on our continent.

Just drop a 30cm thick log on the road, the ARA stops. No fancy things needed.

We all know the "former Buccaneer pilot commander" theory that destroyed the SAAF fighter dream at the last minute. Nevertheless, there should have been at least a 1:1 wind tunnel model of either plane... The later model should have been on a prototype phase considering the engineering skills and money that was involved.


Unless again they decided to take as much money as they could, so deliberately slowed down the production time because the money was coming and the airforce had the Atlas Cheetah in full force upgrade which was theoretically even better than the latest Angolan MiGs and their airframes were going to hold until the first decade of the new Millennium... So why the rush?

Always remember this, the contractors always sleep with the politicians when it comes to weapons acquisition or development. The tax payer and the Treasurer are the i.diots who don't even know how much a single aircraft component costs, so when a product is not delivered after so much money has been spent the "Buccaneer pilot theory" is invented.

Big time, the SAAF gave contractors $2 billion to develop them a fighter... Not even an ejection seat was produced after receiving that much money. It all went to some inflated God-knows-what.

We all know that the current vehicle is a prototype, he's trying to equate it to a production vehicle just to cover up its shortfalls (which are forgiven for a vehicle that is yet to be tested and refined).

The same Henry240 will be glorifying a modified ARA MK2 for better suspension and all, then praise how ARA manufacturers were quick to produce a better version of the same vehicle without changing the hull.


For all we know, the vehicle could have been deliberately dropped so it fails obstacle passing tests THEN more funds are allocated for another prototype which is basically the same vehicle with shifted compartment space resulting to a usable ground clearance..... Remember this, they already have been promised funding for 8 prototypes (if jakeporeshenko is correct) so they might want to milk that opportunity as well.

The current ARA doesn't look like the design renders... So something tells me that the real commercial product will look like the renders because why make your product perfect on your first attempt when you can be paid to do 8 attempts.

If I'm not mistaken that's a farming airport (for sugarcane treating) converted into a temporal airforce facility.

There's another farming airport 65km north of this one and a handful in a 200km radius. This would explain why there's more airports in the country than in China. (according to the CIA)
