Where I live, there's about 8 game/nature reserves in a 60km radius that I personally know... There's so much abundance of wildlife when you drive, a troop of monkeys can just jump into the road at anytime... F*ck there's even wildlife at the airport premises.

We have wildlife in eco estates, animals roaming on open lands not classified as game reserves. We even had a buffalo running around down my street (2 months ago) that I have no idea where it came from.

When it comes to wildlife, a few countries are in the South African league.

Mmmh, I don't understand what you mean. There's no rivary between us and you. The so called rivary was occastrated by Augustine and his sidekick Henry120. Augustine finally got a wife and broke his virginity and started getting serious about his "military research" career somewhere else.... Henry still has his behind sticking out for an occasional slap and still fantasise about "invading the Republic of South Africa in style". Otherwise it's rather peaceful.

So someone confused a Hind with a Su-30? So much for invading the Republic of South Africa in style.

It's the image loading feature available on this site that's starting to weardown the site. Other forums never allow the direct upload of images so to avoid having this problem.

Sooner or later Sean may have to remove this image upload feature or else build a dedicated data centre like Facebook or Instagram which will cost him a fortune to run.

Ideally,citizens should understand the need for defence acquisitions ,which hopefully will take another 4 or 5 election cycles,though Kenyans are wiser now with Somalia.

The solution here is to keep the media out of military acquisition issues. When you give the media too much freedom they tend to run their own show just to sell their news.... The media should report on civil service issues.

Corruption has a far bigger influence over your live in SA (or any other African country) than war.

If there were less secrecy and more oversight when the arms deal happened ,we would have probably ended up with a better deal for the taxpayer and the SANDF. Lots of items on that shopping list came from greedy politicians smelling an easy buck and not necessarily from what the SANDF wanted or needed.

See the issue here is not oversight but senseless media reporting. Would South Africa ever buy the much needed strategic airlift? It won't happen because if we dared, CityPress and News24 will come up with fancy articles like "Zuma Buys Weapons" then students will be up burning things demanding they get free education.... During the days of the Arms Deal it was about arms vs health. We held countless high school debates why the government shouldn't be buying ARVs with the money, do you know why? Because guys at the Action Treatment Campaign made their won calculations and presented them to the media who had stories to sell and people were more concerned about dying of HIV than the aged military.

I already hate the fact that DoD is already underfunded, it gets only 25% of what the Education Department gets and already there were people calling for more money to be taken out of the Defence to add on free education. As I said before, those Gripens will be flying until they fall off the sky and no additional airframes will be bought and no replacement will be acquired under the public watch.

As for the corruption, well I'm not for it BUT it's hardly a uniquely African thing, the Americans are even more corrupt just study the whole lobby system and who financially backs congressman and all.... The difference is that they keep their media out of military issues.

The only invasion that could ever occurred could have been from Zim. So Zim is down and out then nothing will over occur.

My biggest concern with South Africa's defence affairs is the sensationalised media. I once read a main media article years ago banishing the purchase of the Badger. The reporter who obviously had no military background information went on about how many schools would have been built with the money.

As I said, the military should have a black budget and place things under the Secrecy Bill to stop journalists from snooping around on sensitive defence issues.

Even if Botswana bought a squadron worth of F35s, our politicians would pretend like they didn't see them. I have a feeling we won't be buying anything flying for the next 30 years until those Gripens start falling off the sky... Even then it's gonna be a hard sell to the public why we need fighters.... South Africans, like the Swiss have has too much say on defence related matters. Our open national budget is our worse enemy, we need a black budget like the US where such things are procured and keep the very opinionated media out of it.

DRC deployed is UN's. Every equipment used there is ordered and paid for by the UN. If the UN requires a Gripen, they'll request for one and pay for it.

I'm a rifle fanatic but I personally can't wrap my head around the layout of a bullup rifle, the design is just all wrong... Love the Yanks though, they preached the bullup gospel in the 90s then went on adopting something traditional like the M4 and SCAR H/L, the French missed the memo as well

Not yet in production. Once the market version is available, you'll see it mounted on the Rooikat as a demonstrator. Imagine a Rooikat firing 105mm shells at 32km range then hit 120km/h escape afterwards, it's infantryman's worse nightmare.

Yeah, the Agusta AW109 is rubbish. We had 30 of them in 2006, 4 of them just fell of the sky. It performs bad inland since most of South Africa is 1500m above sea level.... Luckily we didn't buy 60 units as initially planned.
