Let me give u some intelligence on the present state of SA' military: SANDF present capabilities exists on paper. South Africa's military lacks the capacity to mount credible lethal offensive for a decisive victory in combat. This is an Army it's soldiers coming under live fire in Sudan didn't want to be anywhere near it. I can give u more but I'll leave it here. U can challenge it as usual with no intellectual or empirical proof as usual because of cause u want to be heard.

No army can be trusted without being tested in modern age anti-terror war. Kenyans and Ugandans were mocking Nigeria's early failure with Boko Haram, until Somalia terrorist gangs began to post many You Tube videos of how uneducated jihadists demolished Ugandan and Kenyan army bases, killed their soldiers, army officers ran away, and jihadists took over huge stock of weapons loaded in whole army bases. Since then, no Kenyan or Ugandan laughs at Nigerian army again, after lesson learn. No army can be trusted until it is tested in real shooting war on terror.

Mmmh, what's your point? South Africa has operated bases almost in every continent besides the Americans and Australia. We have never ran away and left any base be it Northern Namibia or Korea, North Africa while engaging the Italians.

So you based your statement on staying in a base and fight? Then you're probably infinity years behind South Africa because our record of base keeping has not been broken.

It's only fair if someone made a statement like "our military has gained plenty of experience in with its current engagements" which is a true statement than to say "there is no country in SSA which has developed the sort of capacity we have to deal with contemporary African threats".... Just because some countries don't have insurgents running around in daylight doesn't mean they don't have the capability/capabilities to deal with them. In fact the fact that they don't have those insurgents on the streets is something you should be envying with their security cluster because they have a capability to uproot them at infancy, something you obviously lacked.

One night in our Ops Centre over the comms, I was witness to a Recce commander refusing to "fvcking night-infil my men on a fvcking rust bucket Hip" [MI-8]. Our plan had been for 2 Oryx to insert Recces and Uruguayan SF at night ahead of a fleeing foreign element linked to the ADF...[OPSEC precludes me from more details]. Needless to say, URUBATT also scrubbed the mission. The 2 Oryx had been re-tasked to convey Higher UN civilians from New York and the FIB mission had been assigned the MI-8s.

So yes, Oryx rotors overhead is a salvation, especially now that FIB platoons are going out on 24-hour patrols and deliberately initiating contact. Of course Rooivalk have become very valuable assets for CAS in that scenario. Then again, UN and geo-politics has come to knobble the FIB's effectiveness.

You talk about the Recce and Uruguay SF. Where are the Tanzanian SFs? I know they sent a very large number of their special forces in the FIB.

Today's major potential global threat is Islamic Terrorism. Militaries tailor training to meet their very present threats which is what I mean by existential. So my question is what threats does South Africa face now or in the medium term that informs it footing expensive brigade sized drills?

Do we have Islamic Terrorism threats? No! Do we have eminent conversation threats? No! But we train and prepare for it all.

Sh#t happens overnight, always be prepared. If Nigeria was prepared, you would have eradicate BH overnight.

NB: In South Africa, terrorists are normally dealt with by intelligence organizations and by guys on suits and flashy sport cars. So you'll never see the SANDF handling those unless they're to provide extra security during raids.

After fighting WW2, we were complacent and got caught with our pants down, from a military stand-point. I disagree with the politics of why we were fighting from 1969 to 1989, but I honour all those who fought on all sides. So to answer your question: lessons learned and never again.

Here's a possible scenario why we can go full war in just months or weeks from now...

Robert Mugabe dies, battle for succession goes out of hand. The ZDF splits to favour factions. Civil War is looming. SADC calls a meeting to call them to put down arms and return to the barracks, the factions are not buying it..... Then SADC has to go in militarily.

South Africa goes in from the south, Botswana hits from the flank and Zambia on the north... It's a full war.

None of my questions are rhetorical; I genuinely am appalled at the lackadaisical cleavage to facts I observe at this thread anchored by someone from the auditing/accounting profession.

I personally noticed plenty of things with the ATV.. The spare wheels were the first. Then the sharp welded edges which we all know how dangerous they are. In most countries you wouldn't sell something that hazardous to the public.

However since it's a Nigerian product, if a South African raised such questions then it's because we're "hating on the west coast boys".
