The cost of developing that capability from scratch is unbelievable, Thailand looked at the very cheap Song Class from China and they decided that the cost of developing the facilities and human capital to operate them is well beyond their reach.

Thai defence spending: $6 billion
Nigerian defence spending: $2 billion

Saudi's put the price at acquiring 4 submarines at $3.4 Billion dollars. The entire South African arms deal* came in at about the same price.

*3 submarines, 3 Frigates, ~50 Jets, 30+ helicopters

The navy would also need Hydrograpic ships, mine-hunters and logistics ships, including anti-submarine .

But with marginalisation and lack of development young people in rural areas will feel marginalised and that's where terror groups like BH/ISIS get there recruits.

A strong military can never be a guard against its own people who feel they have no hope for the future. The best way to stop terror is to cut of there supply of fresh recruits, and the only answer to that is inclusive development.

Give people hope for their future and they will in turn suppress any anti nationalist stance.

I completely agree the lack of a dedicated assault gun/infantry support variant is not the most pressing concern for the Badger fleet since the Rooikat can be used in that role.

However, according to my understanding that's not the Rooikat's job. It is supposed to provide reconnaissance and undertake flanking actions as needed, not spend all its time backing up the Badgers and infantry.

The Rooikat was not designed as a replacement for the Ratel-90's role and shouldn't be regarded as such.

Incidentally, you mentioned substituting what we already have...that shouldn't be an issue if one puts the existing 90mm turret on the Badger.

I'd generally agree with this sentiment.

The Brazilians created a pretty good turret which mated a 90mm gun to an ATGM launcher and I wished that was the way the Badger would go.

The 60mm gun-mortar is useless against dug in troops, buildings, static fortifications, and other "hard targets" which is why a large calibre weapons system capable of fulfilling the assault gun type role would be more useful.

However, the mortar can indeed be used in that role if it were up-gunned and capable of firing HEAT ammunition like the LAV-M with the British 120mm mortar by Delco and Royal Ordnance. This thing has been used by the Saudis in Yemen and capable of flattening structures, older tanks, and infantry alike. It's both an assault gun and a mortar.

Actually I thought that Denel would go for something like that if they really wanted a multipurpose mortar for the Badger, it really surprised me when I heard they were sticking with a longer barrelled 60mm.

why not , specialy in sub saharian africa, when neighbours have not last aicraft radars capacity and not many radars and air defense systems , if air force need to stike in enemy territory by flyng low under radars detection close to the ground they need a camo , to not be not be easily visible from high altitude patrol aircraft .

The 90mm had a canister round that was devastating against infantry.
You need a mix of 20-30mm and 76-90-105mm for a good fire belt shoot.
In my opinion the SANDF made a mistake in selecting the 30mm for the fire support Badger. They should have used the old 90mm with 2x igwe's in that turret. They are saying the 60mm can be elevated low for that job, but it doesn't always occupy the battlespace where that's needed.

For coin, you can't do much better than a Rooikat 76. Just enough firepower to get the job done and a big ammo loadout for long endurance missions to hunt down/outflank technicals that would struggle to outrun or outshoot it.

I don't know with others but the 20/30mm guns will operate or fire single shots if necessary followed by 2-3 shot bursts. That's why the EMAK-30 has a single shot sniper mode.

They can be made operational.

Look at how quickly the Nigerian Army's AML-60s resurfaced with new coats of paint when they were needed.

There is nothing to stop them from bringing the ERC 90 Lynxes, EE-9 Cascavels, and AML-90s out of storage and reactivating them.

Even if the fleet has suffered some attrition, Nigeria bought such large numbers of all three types of vehicle it's unthinkable that all of them are too far gone to be rescued from the depots.

Be ready to deploy air assets when needed. Just look at US operations in the Middle East. The stolen Radio is a bad thing.
