CultureRe: Which Nigerian Tribe Owns Ogbono Soup, Okro Soup, Egusi Soup , Vegetable , White by ademijuwonlo(f): 9:14pm On Mar 10, 2024
bigfrancis021:
Okra (Pronounced properly as Okwuru in Igbo) is an Igbo soup. The English word, 'okro' was derived from the Igbo word' 'Okwuru'.
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/okra

Ogbono and Egusi are also Igbo native soups. The proper name for 'Egusi' is 'Egwusi' and that is the way the Igbo people pronounce it. 'Enugu' is meant to have been 'Enugwu' meaning 'on top of the mountain' but the spelling is anglicized. Igbo dishes (Okro, Egusi, Ogbono, Onugbu etc) are the most common native dishes you find in Nigeria and the most likely ones you'll get served with at Nigerian restaurants outside Nigeria. Just because the soups became popular all over Nigeria doesn't mean that we'll deny the obvious which is their Igbo origin. Vegetable soup (edikangkong) is an ibibio-efik soup also popular in Nigeria.

However, these soups have become so popular all over Nigeria that several tribes have adopted their own ways of cooking the soups. But generally, especially in Lagos where the different cooking styles exist, the Igbo cooking style is still preferred over other cooking styles.

The yoruba have their own several native meals of which only a few are popular to an extent, the most popular being amala and ewedu.

Who told you that Okro and Egusi are yoruba soups? Please don't come up here claiming what you don't know. Because the soups are popular suddenly makes them Yoruba soups, right? Aren't Ewedu, Efo riro and the rest your so-called yoruba soups?
The fact that it is called Okra doesn't mean other tribes doesn't have words for it. Yoruba calls it Ila. And Egusi is a yoruba word by the way and your dictionary acknowledges that.

Armaggedon:
Egwusi, okwuru and Ogbono are all Igbo soups that have gone global.
Some even call it a "national delicacy" (whatever that means)
Even the names are self evident
Egusi originated from Yoruba language. Ogbono soup in known in Yoruba land as apon soup.
You are welcome.

(5) Waterleaf soup

Water Leaf is a green leafy vegetable (Talinum Triangulare) grown in Nigeria. An excellent immune booster, it is one of those green vegetables that grow all year round but flourishes more in the raining season. Gbure is what the Yoruba people call it, while the Edo people call it Ebedondon.

It also takes its place among the cheapest soups you could make in the country:

Waterleaf – N400
Palm Oil – N200
Ponmo – N300
No pepper in your water leaf soup, seasoning , protein .

It is amazing how You people will claim to be educated but don’t understand that when you eat local foods you create jobs in Nigeria. When people have jobs, they spend money, when they spend money, factories sell, when factories sell, they employ more people. When people have jobs and factories are working govt gets more taxes and can provide hospitals, roads, schools etc.

Your love for imported foods and imported everything is the reason you graduate and there are no jobs for you and all of you are looking to japa!! When you eat imported foods the jobs you create are abroad and you local factories close down!!!

So even if the local one is also expensive, at least the local one benefits you for reasons outlined above. This is not the time to help other countries.
I get what you are saying now and on this, you are right.

Yes cos his brother is now in power. This is the reason I don't take all these people agitating to break away from Nigeria serious. They are trying to breakaway because their kinsman is not in power and the moment their kinsman is in power they drop their agitation.

You are not even talking local rice you are talking about imported rice. When rice gets to N200,000 you will know that we have other foods in Nigeria. The policy is working, Nigerians have no business eating imported food unless you are well off….change your eating habits if you are poor. No country feeds it’s poor on imported foods.

I have no sympathy for anyone complaining about the price of imported food or food manufactured with imported raw materials…that is the problem these reforms are designed to solve. Economics is very simple, it’s demand and supply. When the demand falls because the price is too high people will either resort to local rice or alternative local foods like yam…..which is good for our local farmers and our economy.
Even Yam, garri and other locally produced agricultural products are expensive. So, what are you talking about?

This is a good reward for selfishness. Why couldn't he work? A lot of people who are working don't even like their jobs but they do the job because they don't want to steal.

No RIP from me cos I am happy he died while he was trying to selfishly put other people in darkness and lives at risk.

It might be that your mum’s family have base in Lagos up to the third generation, or other parts of yorubaland.

And also the extreme western parts of Bini also share borders with Ondo state. Ask your mum if she is from Usen or any other extreme western Bini villages, these are the only parts that have these Yoruba ability. 95% of Binis don’t know speak Yoruba and don’t have any need for it.

It is also believed to be that the Oba family and a few family migrated from Yoruba land, if this is true or not is not the position here, but i can tell you that none of these families except the ones that settled on the fringes can speak Yoruba today. The Oba’s family cannot if he indeed migrated from Yoruba land .

That of Akoko Edo is sincerely dependent on trade and association to survive and nothing more, Akoko Edo is on the fringes, they speak Yoruba alongside their Edo first languages for trade, interaction, to survive
