Magnoliaa: Uhn uhh. Most of what you wrote doesn't cut it. At least in relation to my question. Maybe, I didn't specify enough... I'm talking about a structured, collective, economical whole or good or gain, AS LEGACIES, our parents left... They left a lot if you know what to do with it. Maybe you should pick my listed point one by one and analyse them and let's see how easy you can do that. Apart from the northern enclave, Nigeria's education is not as bad as some of you claim. University of Ibadan and Covenant University for example are still among top 6 in Africa. Magnoliaa: My parents? This ain't subjective. Otherwise, we shouldn't have undereducated youths, with proof of statistics showing the deplorable state of education in Africa/Nigeria (and in contrast to the past). Check Nigeria's literacy rate in the 60s and today and see that Nigeria has come a long way. Start from there. What the British handed over was very bad. The past that you mentioned was worse. Then you had teachers who didn't know more than a 12 year old today. What past? Magnoliaa: Sah, my question was what YOU LEFT FOR US. That we can do something with... During the military rule, the economy was good. As in, while, and in the reign of soldiers. Both coexisted, not so? I understand they abused human rights, that's not my point. From the point of independence, all through 2 republics and the beginnings of the fourth -- was Nigeria stable or not? The economy was bad during the military rule. Money was hard to come by as we learnt. Car ownership was far lower than what we have today. We imported almost everything from rice to frozen chicken to ordinary tomato paste. Remember it was the military who ruined the refineries. And at independence and after, Nigeria was not stable! Who is telling you these lies? Just six years after independence, we had a coup followed by war. There was little that generation of Nigerians could do. They had it tough. But they fought the military to a standstill. What have you done with the democracy they won for you? You are now rigging elections for the politicians and shouting about frivolous things like reality shows. This generation is more unfortunate than the ones before it. Read comments on this very thread and see how shallow your generation is. Magnoliaa: Don't hijack, our recent achievements, plix.
No be we be hustlers, doing start up businesses here and there? The 21st Century, technology-addicted kids? Our older Nigerian elders made it so? What achievement? You for no do anything. Those technology addicted kids got their funding and direction from the older generation you love to blame. Software writing and hardware stuff didn't start today in Nigeria. Abeg talk another thing. Magnoliaa: Something our elders left for us to work with, again, as you said. This is not it.
How many of us are actively into banking, benefitting from it? How many applications get rejected due to a lack of qualifications and working experiences they ask for? Yeah, y'all founded it. But, are we in them, running things? Most of those running the banks today heading one division or another are your age mates. Innoson that started a car company belongs to the older generation you love to disparage. What is your generation doing? Twerking and social media. Many youths have gotten loans from banks in recent times. Remove banking from a nation's economy and all is gone. Most of those banks were started by people as young as you in the 80s. They didn't waste their lives abusing past generations. Magnoliaa: I'm not contending the ills of the youth. Same, so how many of us clean ones have been helped by diaspora? Should this not be evident everywhere?
Hustling is not the issue. It is an enabling and fertile environment suitable to make one blossom. Life is not served al lacarte. You fight for what you want. The Jews never had an enabling environment anywhere but those guys are fighters. Black youths should emulate that. The question is, what are YOU doing! |

Magnoliaa: What are the things given to us? From older Nigerian generations oh. I'll like to know. Can you list them? (Do not tell me to go research, plix and plix). Let's go there: 1. Your elders/parents educated you. You might not appreciate it, but that was one powerful tool they gave you. Try to imagine what your life would be without their sacrifice. 2. Most of us were young or yet unborn during the bad days of the military. So we can't truly appreciate what our elders went through risking their lives to push against guns and tanks. What have we the younger generation done with their sacrifice? We now rig election for thieves for money believing that they are more powerful than us because they got money and guns. Yet our own parents braved the guns of Abacha! 3. Some people made investment in the media space that most of you abuse today. Both foreigners and local investors. Right now you can pick your phone and get whatever information you need. You can post whatever you like and galvanize people. That's power. Ask them in some Islamic countries. 4. You live in a society where you can start your own small business and watch it thrive. New businesses are springing up everyday started by people younger than you. Nigeria, especially, the southern part is a huge informed market due to education. Some people made it so. 5. Most of you apply to banks and other companies. Do you think these companies were founded by youths? 6. You live in a country with a huge rich diaspora which was established as far back as decades ago by our fathers. Bar the youths( people of your age) spoiling the country's name abroad ) these Diaspora across the world can actually help you find your feet if you are clean and know where to look. There is no meaningful country in the world where our elders have not put roots. I can go on and on but if you don't know your worth, it would make no sense to you like the op who thinks his elders are unfortunate because he is being forced to hustle for himself. Take the bull by the horn. |

angelfallz: the 1st bolded, i strongly disagree that respect for elders is silly or was designed to keep kids below their parents, leaders etc.
the 2nd bolded, our ancestors are achieved a lot. haven't you heard of the Benin empire? Oyo empire? but sadly with the coming of the white man, they destroyed and buried so much of our culture and who we are as people. Do you know how many Nigeria cultural artifacts that are in museums in the UK and europe?
there is nothing wrong in respecting and listening to our elders, i'm happy you even added asia. do you know how much respect and love the asians shower on their parents and elders?
In the end you too would become an old cargo. and if at your youthful age you engineered a society that has no regard for the elderly, you must be prepared to suffer the consequence in your old age. Gbam. He must be one of those empty pant- sagging boys. Question is: what has his generation achieved with everything given to them? Youths in Asia are on sleepless nights working hard for a better future for their society while people like him are hiding behind phones. |

Redcrafton: stop displaying chep deceit here.
So because herdsmen are not state organ you will look the other way when the kill innocent Nigerians?
Who backs the herdsmen, not the state organ?
How many killer herdsmen have been arraigned in court for the killings.
Nobody hates you, but people hate your duplicitous nature.
As for trouping to your region...always remember that Awolowo whom you revered so much murdered up to 3million vulnerable women and children to ensure that the trouping remains. Stop being silly. The media speaks out against herdsmen and when the government wanted to give them land in every state , the media didn't keep quiet. If you knew the state was behind herdsmen attack, why didn't you protest against it yourself abi dem chain your legs? The police is different. It's a state organ, it can be held accountable. So Awolowo killed 3 million of your people? Ehnnnn. Tell us more. And because he killed your people, his action cursed the rest of you to keep trooping to the west as economic immigrants? Interesting! |

You only speak when it affects you and you want everybody to flow with you...but you didn't do anything when they were in trouble.
That;s selfishness.
You should allow those who didn't protest be.
That's my point. Shame on you. Police is a state organ that could be protested against. Herdsmen are not state organs. It is left for the government to tackle them. You are allowing hatred to eat you up and make you dense. If you like protest if you like don't. The rest will still move on without you. And yet you still have no option but to troop out of your land to those places owned by those you hate. |

Politics › Re: Why Are Older Nigerians So Unfortunate? by Aderr: 3:25pm On Oct 11, 2020 |
ethicallyright: My concern is not really your political views because they are your opinion and your right. My concern is the part in bold which is the future and thus more important. I'll write less and just raise points.
(1) Investors are not like financial institutions who give loans and get repaid with interest. Investors are individuals or corporate bodies that pump capital into a business or an idea in exchange for a certain degree of control over the business.
2) Banks do not give loans to people just because of hope or trust because entrepreneurship is a pool of risk. Politicians get loans in Nigeria because they have the collateral. If the business fails they can get the loan back through the sale of the collateral which was valued to be the measure of the loan that was granted. Is it your family house or ancestral land that you will take to first bank or GtB?
3) Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Twitter , Snapchat etc were not built with loans. I ask you to challenge me with evidence if you have one. These tech startups turned billion dollars multinationals because of venture capitalists and angel investors. (Example Evan Spiegel created Snapchat like any other app on the Apple store. Barry Eggers , the first investor had a daughter who was always bored. A certain weekend he noticed his daughter playing and very happy with her phone and as an inquisitive person Eggers who was impressed questioned her and discovered that a new app "Snapchat" which was then worth nothing made his favorite daughter happy. He reasoned that if Snapchat could make his girl happy, then he could get more money if he invested in the company as young girls and teenagers seeking fun would be interested in the app. That was how Spiegel got his funding in millions of dollars. If you don't understand this , think of Otedollar funding an unknown company because he reasoned that since it made a younger Dj Cuppy happy , it would be popular among the youths and make him and the founder more money.)
Others like Facebook were crowd funded by Havard students and later by venture capitalist after Zuckerberg and his team showed them a long term plan for the company.
4. Nigerians who are under the ages of 40 have enough money to invest but they are more interested in quick returns. For a tech company to start yielding profit, it may take at least 5 years. It takes 3-6 months to package an artiste, get him a hit and then start making money from him. Victor AD which I'm well aware of his story had his label invest 20 million naira for his "wetin we gain" single. Emperor chizzy is under 40 and invested more than 50 million on Kiss Daniel, Sugar boy and the rest in his label who never succeeded. Erica got more than 30 million naira just from crowdfunding within a month after she was disqualified from big brother naija. Linda Ikeji would rather buy a room of shoes and 10 cars each for her brothers and sisters than investing as one of the youth who first discovered the money the internet offers.
It is the youth in America that built silicone valley in California and funded their startups. The government of America has not spent a dime on the tech startups making waves today. They even want to tax them and have a share of their unstoppable wealth that didn't stop flowing even during the pandemic.
Nairaland could have been a multi billion naira company if the youth understood the stock exchange market . Séun would have listed his company there . 1000 ,2000 ,3000 naira that an average youth uses to gamble could have earned him 5000 the first month at Lagos stock exchange if he knew what to do there. He would reinvest that 5000 the next month and get 20,000.
While the youth in America prefer the New York Stock Exchange that will give 25% ROI and aid in production, our country prefers Ponzi schemes which promise 100% ROI and get scammed in the process.
Only if they knew that school has never been a scam. I am touched! I wish those calling their fathers unfortunate because they didn't feather their nest can read this. |

omoharry: Regarding crowed Funding ,do you think if Nigerians have access to easy & cheaper loan with with lower interest rate like thier counterpart abroad, they would seek investors outside ?These investors have unlimited access to loan with very low interest rate, which makes them easily sought for for investment purposes . Do you think if the system makes it friendly for Nigerians to access these kind of loan at a minimal interest rate, they would go looking for foreign investors who will likely take the lion share of the profit ? We are still saying thesame thing but you just choose to closed your mind to what the op is saying . The young Nigerians have to struggle four times as hard on how to start up a business or earn a living in order to keep thier head up in a hostile country that has no plans for their younger generation .Yes I am agree with the Op. The older generation that have ruled this country in one way or the other are terrible elders and do not deserve any respect from younger Nigerian. One of them is presently ruling Nigerian and just look at his style or leadership ? Our old men have nothing to offer . The earlier we recognize this the better . You are mixing things up. The ruling class and the citizens are not the same. Remove all the old cargoes ruling Nigeria today and place people under 40 in their place, do you think this benighted youths you see will rule better? Nigeria has a bad foundation. |

Some of the banks and other companies they write application to were founded by those who are 40 and above.
