According to his book, Perkins' function was to convince the political and financial leadership of underdeveloped countries to accept enormous development loans from institutions like the World Bank and USAID. Saddled with debts they could not hope to pay, those countries were forced to acquiesce to political pressure from the United States on a variety of issues. Perkins argues in his book that developing nations were effectively neutralized politically, had their wealth gaps driven wider and economies crippled in the long run. In this capacity Perkins recounts his meetings with some prominent individuals, including Graham Greene and Omar Torrijos. Perkins describes the role of an EHM as follows:

China has signed a $23 billion deal with the new government of Goodluck Jonathan in Nigeria to build three oil refineries and a petrochemical plant. Goodluck Jonathan came to power on May 6 after the death of the former president, Umaru Yar’Adua.

The new government declared that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with China State Construction Engineering Corporation on May 13. The three refineries are to be built in Lagos, the commercial capital, in Kebbi state in the remote northeast, and Bayelsa, Jonathan’s home state within the Niger Delta. The refineries would have a combined capacity of 900,000 barrels per day (bpd), double the expected domestic demand of 450,000 bpd by the time they are due to be completed in five years.

CATEME, Mozambique — When Augusto Conselho Chachoka and his neighbors heard that the world’s biggest coal mine was to be built on their land, a tantalizing new future floated before them. Instead of scraping by as subsistence farmers, they would earn wages as miners, they thought. The mining company would build them sturdy new houses, it seemed. Finally, a slice of the wealth that has propelled Mozambique from its war-addled past to its newfound status as one of the world’s fastest-growing economies would be theirs.

Instead, they ended up being moved 25 miles away from the mine, living in crumbling, leaky houses, farming barren plots of land, far from any kind of jobs that the mine might create and farther than ever from Mozambique’s growth miracle.

“Development is coming, but the development is going to certain areas and certain people,” Mr. Chachoka said, taking a break from trying to coax enough food from his scraggly field to feed his six children.

Mozambique is one of the poorest nations in the world, broken by a brutal colonial legacy, a 16-year civil war and failed experiments with Marxist economic policy. But it is also one of the so-called African Lions: countries that are growing at well above 6 percent annually, even amid the global downturn.

Mozambique is poised for a long economic boom, driven by its vast deposits of coal and natural gas. Vale, the Brazilian mining company, is planning to invest $6 billion in its coal operation near here, and other coal giants like Rio Tinto will soon begin producing coal in the Tete region of northern Mozambique.

Gas projects could bring in far more, as much as $70 billion, according to World Bank estimates. Mozambique’s location on Africa’s southeastern coast means it is perfectly positioned to feed hungry markets in southern and eastern Asia. These investments mean that income from natural resources could easily outstrip the outsized contribution foreign aid makes to its $5 billion annual budget.

The country has been growing at a rapid clip for the past two decades, in fact, since the end of its brutal civil war. Yet, after a substantial drop in the first postwar decade, gains against poverty have slowed substantially, analysts say, leaving millions stuck below the poverty line and raising tough questions about whether Africa’s resource boom can effectively raise the standard of living of its people.

“You get these rich countries with poor people,” said the economist Joseph Stiglitz, who recently visited Mozambique and has written on the struggle of resource-rich countries to develop. “You have all this money flowing in, but you don’t have real job creation and you don’t have sustained growth.”

It is a problem in resource-rich countries across Africa. In a largely upbeat assessment of Africa’s growth prospects, the World Bank said in October that rapidly growing economies powered by oil, gas and minerals have seen poverty levels fall more slowly than countries without those resources.

In some nations, like Gabon and Angola, the percentage of people living in extreme poverty has even increased as growth has spiked.

Most of Mozambique’s people live in rural areas, and almost all of them depend on farming. Since commercial farming scarcely exists — 99 percent of farmers are smallholders — this means small-scale, family-based agriculture is the main, and in many cases the only, source of income for the vast majority of Mozambicans.

But the new gas and coal deals are wrapped up in multibillion-dollar megaprojects that rarely create large numbers of jobs or foster local entrepreneurship, according to an analysis by the United States Agency for International Development.

“The effects of megaprojects on living standards were found to be very modest,” the report said. “These projects, over all, have created few jobs. And linkages to the public budget via tax revenues have also been small because of tax exemptions.”

The plight of the people of this tiny, new village helps illustrate why Mozambique’s rural poor have been left behind. Far from the centers of economic power, dependent on rain-fed agriculture and ignored by the government, the rural poor languish even as the country surges.

The coal deposits in Moatize represent one of the biggest untapped reserves in the world, and the Brazilian mining company Vale has placed a big bet on it. But to get to the coal, hundreds of villagers living atop it had to be moved. The company held a series of meetings with community members and government officials, laying out its plans to build tidy new bungalows for each family and upgrade public services. As the prospect of huge new investments in their rural corner of the world beckoned, villagers anticipated a whole new life: jobs, houses, education, and even free food.

Things didn’t work out that way. The houses were poorly built and leaked when it rained. The promised water taps and electricity never arrived. Cateme is too far from the mine for anyone here to get a job there. The new fields are dusty and barren — coaxing anything from them is hard.

Before he moved, Mr. Chachoka made a tidy living. He had a small vegetable patch, his wife made bricks from mud to sell in a nearby town, and he could pick up occasional work as a laborer.

Mr. Chachoka’s move from peri-urban striver who salted away extra cash to struggling rural farmer who can barely feed his family is emblematic of a problem facing Mozambique and many other resource-rich but still deeply poor nations. Strong economic growth almost completely bypasses the rural poor, and in some ways can leave them even worse off. “The rich get richer and the poor get poorer,” Mr. Chachoka said. “That is what is happening here.”

Some resource-rich countries in Africa have managed to turn mineral wealth into broad-based development. Ghana, which recently discovered oil, has won praise for its careful planning for poverty alleviation. Botswana’s diamonds have turned what was one of the world’s most impoverished nations into a middle-income country. Mozambique says it hopes to do the same, striking a balance between exploiting its mineral wealth and improving rural farming so that all Mozambicans benefit.

“We are very optimistic,” said Abdul Razak, deputy minister of mines and the man in charge of bringing Mozambique into compliance with international standards for transparency. “The level of poverty is going to be lower and the level of well-being is going to be higher.”

The government has signed up to be part of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, a program set up by Britain and supported by the World Bank to ensure that governments and companies are honest about revenues. The government also says it plans to invest the proceeds of mining into antipoverty programs and to help rural farmers.

But Mozambique’s experience also shows how hard it will be to get there. Even after two decades of strong growth, the country remains near dead last on the Human Development Index, just above Burundi, Niger and the Democratic Republic of Congo. By some measures, median income has actually shrunk, not grown, since its boom began.

The events that unfolded in Cateme explain why this is the case. Earlier this year, the people of Cateme sent a letter to local government officials and Vale demanding that their complaints about the resettlement process be addressed, threatening to block the railway line that passes through their village carrying coal to the port. When they received no reply, they occupied the rail line. The police descended upon them, chasing them away and roughing up those who resisted removal.

Eventually, contractors came to begin repairs and install electricity. The buzz of handsaws and hammers replaced the whir of cicadas, and new public buses made the markets of Moatize more accessible.

“There were some problems after the relocation,” said Vale’s country manager, Ricardo Saad, adding that the company was trying to fix them. Local people, he said, should not think that mining would bring instant prosperity.

“One of the things that we have to manage very carefully are the expectations,” Mr. Saad said.

Yet all the scaffolding and newly erected electricity poles aren’t enough for many residents of Cateme. The underlying lack of access to good land and water persist. Hopes that farmers would be able to sell their produce to feed the boom in this mining area have so far not been met: much of the food is flown in. The local chapter of the national farmers’ union is working with farmers to teach new methods that can improve their crops. But that will take time, said Charlene McKoin, an expert on farming who has been working on American-financed agribusiness projects in Mozambique for the past seven years.

“Farmers are used to burning land, throwing down seeds and praying for rain,” Ms. McKoin said. “The length of time to take someone from subsistence to commercial farming can take up to a generation.”

War is part of humanity. War is as ageless as the world itself even before the advent of the so called international banking cartels. The imminent war in Mali is a good war. We should not allow Islamists to gain a foothold in any region in West Africa. There is nothing wrong if a country decides to adopt Sharia but it becomes dangerous if some folks (just like Boko Haram plans to do) just seize half of the entire country and force their barbarism on everyone.

Should not Naija resources be put to protect Naija citizens on Naija soil first? I don't know for sure but I don't think there's an concrete connection between B.H. and the North Mali rebels. I've seen some online speculation that rich deposits of gold were discovered in Northern Mali.

There is no point negotiating with them, move in and rout the Islamists once and for all.

War is good business for those manufacturing and financing the sale of weapons. Don't forget, the international banking cartels make big profits on wars, and supply both sides of the conflict. Imagine the amount of western military companies that would go out of business if there was peace on earth. Europeans have learned to stop making war on each other but still export their war weapons to others in the world. And the U.S. is still an attack dog of the powers in Rome. West African leaders agree to send 3,000 troops to wrest control of north Mali

LAGOS, Nigeria - West African nations on Sunday agreed to send some 3,000 troops to help the country of Mali wrest back control of its northern half, which was seized by al-Qaida-linked fighters more than six months ago, according to an official involved in the discussions, and a statement read on Nigerian state television.

The decision came late Sunday at the end of an emergency summit in Nigeria's capital of the Economic Community of West African States, or ECOWAS. They were joined by military experts from the United Nations, Europe as well as ministers from Algeria, Mali's neighbour to the north which has previously been against the military intervention. The plan needs final approval from the U.N. Security Council before it can be carried out.

An official involved in the negotiations said by telephone shortly after the meeting that the nations in West Africa are now unanimous in their decision to go forward with the military operation. He said that they will attempt one more round of negotiations with representatives of the Islamists controlling northern Mali, before moving ahead with the intervention.

"We have agreed that 3,300 troops will be sent from West Africa. In addition, around 5,000 Malian troops will also be involved. If there is no agreement in the talks, we will move in," said the official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the press.

The official said that the largest number of troops will come from Nigeria, which has agreed to send 600 to 700 soldiers, he said. Niger is expected to contribute around 500. And the remaining troops will come from the other 13 nations in the 15-nation ECOWAS bloc. Air power, he said, will be provided by either France or the United States.

Both France and the U.S. have said that the will provide technical and logistical support to the intervention, provided that it is first approved by the United Nations.

Mutinous soldiers overthrew Mali's democratically elected president in March, creating a power vacuum that paved the way for Islamists to grab the north, an area the size of France. In the more than six months since then, the Islamic extremists have imposed a strict form of Shariah law. Music of all kinds has been banned, and people are not even allowed to have a ring tone on their phones, unless it's one based on Quranic recitations. Women have been flogged for failing to cover themselves. And in all three of the major towns in the north, residents have been forced to watch thieves getting their hands hacked off.

The United Nations is expected to meet later this month to review the military plan. Security analysts and diplomats say that even if the deployment of troops to north Mali is approved by the U.N. it could take months to implement.

The official who spoke privately disagrees.

"As soon as they say it's OK, it won't take 24 hours for us to go. If the U.N. says go, we will move in immediately. They (the troops from ECOWAS) will be targeting the hardcore Islamists. Not the Malian nationals — but the foreigners," he said.

In recent weeks, representatives of Ansar Dine, one of the Islamic factions operating in the north, have sent delegations to Burkina Faso and to Algeria in an effort to negotiate a solution in order to avoid a military intervention. Ansar Dine is believed to be made-up mostly of Malian fighters, whereas the two other groups are said to be primarily composed of foreign fighters, some allegedly from as far afield as Pakistan. Mediators are hoping to weaken the Islamic rebel front by peeling off the more moderate members.

Emphasizing the wild reaction of the Hebrew media and Israel’s upper echelon of politicians to Obama’s victory, Mossad opened on the same day a recruiting campaign over the internet. Its ads appeared next to pictures illustrating the victory, creating an eerie image. Is Mossad about to gear up sinister old plans for a presidential assassination? Beginning this article in such a fashion is justifiable due to the violent reactions voiced in Israel. One of the softest belonged to Yedioth Aharonot—Israel’s largest newspaper—which read “An Ugly Victory.” The most quoted reaction belonged to Likud Knesset Member Danny Danon, who said "the State of Israel will not surrender to Obama. We have no one to rely on but ourselves."

This was the unsuccesful end of Netanyahu's open campaign for Republican candidate Mitt Romney. The support included a well-advertised visit to Jerusalem, supporting articles in the Israeli and Jewish media, the disclosure of their old personal friendship which dates back to 1976 (see Romney, Obama, and the Israeli Vote), and the inclusion of Netanyahu in Romney's adds. Moreover, the main financial supporter of Netanyahu is Sheldon Adelson, an American Jew who is among America's richest men, his businesses are centered on the Chinese gambling industry. He openly endorsed Romney and contributed at least $40 million to his presidential elections campaign. This unusual intervention in other country's elections was aimed at placing in the White House a president that will be more receptive to Israel's plans to attack Iran (see Romney’s Key in Israeli Attack on Iran). On August 30, 2012, the International Atomic Energy Agency published a report on the nuclear program of Iran. The report claims that Iran is speeding up its uranium enrichment program, having placed more than three quarters of the centrifuges it needs for completing it in a practically impenetrable underground installation, beneath a mountain outside Qum. This means that Iran is close to crossing what Israel had defined as its red line: the capability to produce nuclear weapons in a safe location. With Obama in the White House, Israel's belligerency is likely to be blocked.

Netanyahu's campaign was more successful at home. Israeli Channel 2 performed a poll just before the elections in the USA; 50% of all Israelis backed Romney, versus 26% for Obama. A similar poll conducted by the ultra-Orthodox Channel 10 showed that 50% of secular Jews favored Obama, and 50% Romney; however, religious Jews favored Romney, giving him 85% of their voices. Unluckily for Romney, neither group could vote in the USA.

The reason why abovementioned Danny Danon became the main politician quoted on the issue despite his relative obscurity was that Netanyahu panicked after the first reactions were published. Interior Minister Eli Yishai, Chairman of Shas Party, said "This is probably not a very good morning for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu." The reason for this statement is clear; if until now the relations between Netanyahu and Obama were not particularly friendly, from now onwards, Netanyahu can count on open hostility. Netanyahu was fast to react, ordering all of his party's ministers and Knesset members to avoid commenting on Obama's re-election without coordinating their statements with the Prime Minister's Bureau. "Don't talk about Obama," Netanyahu was quoted by local media.

The article brings an analysis of David Badin (English spelling may vary), director of a news agency and of a political research center active in Boston and Jerusalem. He explains how his organizations approached hundreds of rabbis all over the US, trying to convince them to endorse Romney and to "teach how much Obama is dangerous to Israel, this would have change the picture, and Romney would have won." He claims that the rabbis could have changed the situation in several key states. He ends his analysis claiming that if these American Jews "put tfilin (while praying), pray three times a day (in weekdays), but vote Obama, there are serious questions on their ways." He continues "there was here a president who made terrible things. He put anti-Semites in senior positions. He supported Islam... All this must force us to consider the relations between religious-Jews in Israel and America, and why there is such a disconnection between them." This is the closest thing to a formal statement of the settlers on their position. It is unlikely they will find any sympathy in Obama's next term.

Netanyahu is under serious political pressure, due to the upcoming elections on January 22, 2013. He is facing serious social protests at home and needs a war to distract the electorate. It always works. A war with Iran is not possible right now. Yet, Obama's victory may have provided him with a poorman's war. Danny Danon's statement opening this article was not random, and probably was coordinated with Netanyahu. From now until the elections Netanyahu will claim that the USA has become unfriendly and thus the people must unify and brace themselves for hard times. A words' war with America is almost as good as one with Iran.

Former Miss Kenya Cecilia Mwangi is currently the talk of the town after the no-holds-barred interview with Drum magazine in which she admits being married to a youthful member of Parliament from the Coast who has another family.

Ms Mwangi, who says she is in the fifth year of her marriage to the MP, explains her decision to go public was inspired by Tusker Project Fame Season I winner Linda Muthama, who in August talked with True Love magazine about her relationship with comedian Walter Mong’are alias Nyambane, who has another wife.

Nyambane declined to speak on his marriage saying it had been rehashed in local press. But he promised an in-depth interview once Linda gives birth to their second child soon.

“Wewe shikilia tu hapo mama ako karibu kujifungua halafu utapata story smart (Hold it there; my wife is about to give birth to our second child and then you will get a good story),” Nyambane said.

For her part, Ms Mwangi requested us not to reveal the name of her husband as his political competitors might use it against him. She, however, talks about their marriage in detail in the October issue of Drum.

“We are now in the campaign period and I want my husband to be at peace,” Ms Mwangi told Lifestyle last week.

Cecilia and Linda are among many young and educated Kenyans who are admitting to being in polygamous unions, a trend that has debunked the belief that polygamy is an outdated culture.

Although the majority of Kenyans claim to be monogamous, statistics show that 13 of every 100 married Kenyan women have co-wives.

Educated women

This means they are married to men who have at least one or more wives, according to the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS), 2008/2009.

The survey showed that educated women were less likely to practise polygamy, as it was common in past centuries when having more women and children was considered to be a status symbol and a source of pride for men.

The survey also showed that older women were more likely to be in polygamous unions than younger ones, and the practice was more prevalent in rural than urban areas.

But more and more young people are making nonsense of these findings, with a growing number of modern women coming out to admit they are second wives. And no, the men are not sugar daddies: they are young husbands.

University of Nairobi sociology lecturer Ken Ouko argues that polygamy never really died.

“It was just re-invented by modern society and the Y (current) generation has perpetuated this re-invention by altogether dismissing marriage as a moribund sham that is nothing more than an outmoded popular tradition,” Mr Ouko says.

Ms Mwangi proudly calls the MP her husband and head of her house. They have a 14-month-old baby called Cherise.

“I am proud to say I am his second wife,” says the model who has become famous for her anti-jigger campaign.

She says one of the conditions in the relationship was that the MP would not neglect his other family.

“As long as he is taking care of the other family I am OK,” she said. “If he considered abandoning them for me then that would be the end of us.”

Ms Mwangi says her decision to go public was inspired by the fact that the union was long-term.

“We have one child and a second one is up for discussion,” she says. “I decided to go public because it is a serious relationship.”

Embrace culture

She supports polygamy arguing it is here to stay. “We must embrace our African culture,” she says. “People must stop demonising second wives because we are not bad people.”

Precious Mutua, 30, a student at the Kenya Institute of Management, proudly admits being a second wife to a 40-year-old IT specialist. They have been in the union for five years and have three children.

She says there are few marriageable men in Kenya and women have to make do with those they get.

“Besides, I am not into attached relationships. He sees me when I want him to,” she says. “I also don’t have to wash his clothes or cook for him. He also takes good care of me.”

Ms Mutua argues that men are genetically polygamous.

“If I am not the second wife I’ll be the first wife so, either way, I’ll be in a polygamous relationship,” she reasons.

Some people have linked polygamy to increased HIV prevalence in the country but Ms Mwangi says promiscuity is to blame.

“It is dangerous when done clandestinely. But when you come out in the open then you all take responsibility for your health, unlike when it is a mpango wa kando (mistress) arrangement,” she says.

It is more dangerous, she adds, to be in a relationship with a single person who is promiscuous.

Population Services International (PSI) has been running adverts urging Kenyans to be faithful. The adverts, whose face is TV host Jimmi Gathu, blame philandering for increased HIV cases besides draining finances.

The “Wacha Mpango wa Kando (stop promiscuity)” sign-off in the commercials has now turned out to be a popular buzz word among Kenyans. A gospel song with the same name has become very popular on television.

But Dr William Maina, the head of the National Aids & STI Control Programme (Nascop) says polygamy is not a major threat to the war on HIV.

“As long as the wives are faithful to the man and vice versa, there is no threat. What we are discouraging are the illicit and secretive affairs outside the marriage,” Dr Maina says.

National Council of Churches of Kenya general secretary, the Rev Canon Peter Karanja, also argues that the polygamy debate should be tackled cautiously.
He says the Bible, in the Old Testament, gives a green light to the culture and outlaws it in the New Testament.

“The Bible gives a clear directive that in church you should not give leadership positions to people in polygamous marriages, meaning they can be members of the church,” Rev Karanja says.

Rev Karanja adds that the Anglican Church of Kenya does not allow polygamy and all priests are under instruction not to officiate such unions.

Under the Constitution, polygamy is forbidden in statutory marriages, but allowed in Muslim and customary marriages. The Marriage Bill, which has the fine details of such arrangements, is yet to be passed by the Parliament.

According to Mr Ouko, young women are forced into the second-wife status because they are too emancipated from the domination that comes with the traditional marriage where the husband is alpha and omega.

“The modern educated woman has no intention of succumbing to the total submission demanded by the monogamous arrangement, where the man expects her to perfect her wifely duties to his satisfaction,” Mr Ouko says.

The sociologist further argues that most women know that in the traditional marriage, anything the man buys will be “ours” but in the polygamous arrangement, anything he buys is hers.

“She will keep the man on his toes about how securing her future is not possible legally due to that little irrelevant eventuality of bigamy,” Mr Ouko says.

“This means that the man has to secure her separately and in her world – she remains the sole owner of whatever may accrue from this arrangement.”

In 2010, a survey conducted by research firm Infotrak showed that given a second chance, 11 of every 100 Kenyan women would have no problem with their husbands marrying other women.

Three in every 10 people would not marry their current spouse again, the Infotrack report said.

The survey further revealed that only 40 per cent of Kenyans were happily married, the rest are either unhappy or not sure how to describe their unions.
Some 29 per cent of married Kenyans admitted their marriages were headed for the rocks.

Love – that traditional bond that leads couples to the altar – seems to have taken the back seat in many Kenyans’ marriages, its place taken by money and children. Only four in 10 married people, according to the survey by Infotrack, said they were in it for love.

Nolita dumpster divers feast on $40K worth of fancy tossed out food/ report by Simone Weichselbaum

It's getting that bad in still blacked out downtown Manhattan?

Dozens of city residents frustrated with day-two of a dark Gotham swarmed a Nolita garbage bin filled with $40,000 of pricy fresh food. Met Food supermarket workers at the corner of Prince St. and Mulberry St., had to toss scores of garbage bags packed with foodie eats like Pom pomegranate juice, soy chai latte, organic eggs, and Ben and Jerry's ice cream, clearing the shelves in the wake of Sandy's aftermath.

Shop owner Paul Fernandez said his store - like most of Manhattan south of 40th St. - has been without power since the storm hit Monday forcing him to trash the entire deli section along with all his meats and dairy products.

"I had to throw out all of my perishables. I can't sell it to anybody. It's like $40,000 worth of food. We carry a lot of specialty item and organically," Fernandez said watching hordes of people packing shopping carts and backpacks with his groceries.

"I didn't expect this kind of a turnout. They are taking advantage." NYU student Ilana Breen, 20, said she'd been wandering the streets all day looking for a working ATM or an open store in order to buy food. Her apartment on E. 23rd St. is without power rotting grub in the fridge.

"We just saw all these people in the Dumpster. This isn't a trash can. This is a heap of food," Breen said showing off a $7.49 bottle of organic vanilla chai she found.

"We don't have any power. I have this book bag and we are going to come back with a suitcase." The Pena family from nearby Grand St. in the Lower East Side got a tip from a friend about the food-find and walked to Nolita with a small shopping cart.

Their son Brian Pena, 20, spent over an hour in the Dumpster tearing open trash bags tossing groceries to his dad and people too embarrassed to ask for the nosh. "I am just helping the people," Pena said tossing boxes of frozen veggies.

"No one wanted to come inside so I am pulling open the bags and giving food." Down the block, Paradise Deli and Grocery was open using a dozen candles to the light the dark store. Owner Aziz Benani watched the Dumpster - divers losing his customers to the free pile of food.

"Yesterday, the Korean around the corner was the only store open and he was busy. " "Now we just opened. And it's slow," Benani said.

Sneaky: Coca-Cola Removes Known Carcinogen to Avoid Cancer Warning Label

In a move to avoid being slapped with a cancer warning label, Coca-Cola is making an emergency recipe alteration that involves removing a known carcinogen from the mix. Showing that the company is more interested in preserving sales than actually ridding its products of known cancer-causing substances, the company chose to remove the toxic ingredient to avoid the warning label — not to actively protect the health of the consumer. The compound (used for the drinks’ caramel coloring), known as 4-methylimidazole (4-MI or 4-MEI), has been ousted by the Center for Sciences in the Public Interest as a powerful carcinogen.

In fact, the Coca-Cola company even denied the cancer link, stating that the findings by CSPI and others were simply untrue. Calling the warning label ‘scientifically unfounded’, Coca-Cola says that there is no public health risk that justifies any change.

“While we believe that there is no public health risk that justifies any such change, we did ask our caramel suppliers to take this step so that our products would not be subject to the requirement of a scientifically unfounded warning,” Coca-Cola representative Diana Garza-Ciarlante told the Associated Press news agency.

As you may know, this coloring compound is not the only dangerous chemical contained in Coca-Cola products. Coca-Cola also contains high-fructose corn syrup, which is devastating the health of children and adults alike. It has also been reported that high-fructose corn syrup oftentimes contains mercury, which has resulted in many scientific organizations calling for immediate FDA action. One such organization, The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, is particularly concerned over the effect that the increased mercury exposure may have on children, such as the children who are actively consuming sodas containing high-fructose corn syrup.

“Mercury is toxic in all its forms. Given how much high-fructose corn syrup is consumed by children, it could be a significant additional source of mercury never before considered,” said Dr. David Wallinga, from The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy.

Diet Coke also contains aspartame, an artificial sweetener that has been shown to spawn tumors in rats the size of golf balls. In a study in which rats were given the sugar substitute, 67 percent of all female rats developed tumors roughly the size of golf balls or larger. In the 2 and a health year study, researcher Innes-Brown used a dose of aspartame equivalent to that of 14 cans of diet — a number considered ‘reasonable’ by the FDA (a 50mg per kilogram ratio).

Coca-Cola apparently sees no cause for concern regarding the excessive amounts of aspartame consumed by individuals who drink diet soda on a daily basis, just as they see no cause for removing cancer-linked 4-methylimidazole. Does public health come second to ensuring the stability of profits for the Coca-Cola company?
