Oasis007: Erling Haaland will be free to leave Borussia Dortmund in January, rather than next summer, when a £64million release clause becomes active.
- Marca
We shouldn't miss out. We have his teacher Amaka. We have his friend Jadon. Over to Fletcher, Murtough, Judge and co. If only the team can play well in order to sweeten the deal. |

Oasis007: "He [VDB] was playing as a No. 6 in the beginning, more defensively, because he had a decent pass and if you take the paradigm of the team had to win then every coach would put him at 6, because he's good there, he had good duel strength and he could intercept balls.
"But Wim Jonk especially said he had to go one line up, Wim saw he had this ability to see spaces, to create spaces for himself and for others, that was his ability, when is the right time to come as a midfielder into the box, in the half spaces his quality was very good."
- Ruben Jongkind [Ajax's former head of academy development] That is youth football. AWB was a winger in youth football and Ruud Van Nistelrooy was a midfielder. I am saying that in senior football i have not seen him play significant time as the most defensive midfielder. This might be Jongkind's kind way of saying he wasn't good as a DM so he was moved into center midfield. You still didn't tell me what website you got those stats from. If Amaka tries it and it works i will be happy but IMO there is not enough work rate and defensive nous in a VDB, Pogba, Bruno midfield. |

TrebleChamp: I think the bolded happened because we outbidded Pep for both, i agree with your submission on McTom though. How do you see VDB playing in a Pep setup? We don't have more money than ADUG. If we outbid them it is cos they let it happen. In terms of VDB he is decent with possession football and also makes good runs into the box so i can see Pep playing him in one of the more attacking midfield roles e.g Gundogan's role in the present team. He might not be a starter but would see good action. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by afrodoc2: 11:58am On Aug 24, 2021 |
Oasis007: Bolded is major Reason I believe he has to play to get things right. He can comfortably pass from the back, short passes. He's good at finding and utilising spaces and he can pop up Goals if opportunity arises.
He has played as a sole DM many times, so he's not gonna be unusual if he plays there for United. VDB, Pogba and Bruno can work, especially once Varane starts playing as well.
OGS should change formation to 4 3 3, to win Titles you must be sound tactically and technically, and should be paying Attention to the Match, not watching something on the Tab.
.....Sancho............. Cavani ............... Greenwood......
Or
.... Martial ............. Greenwood ............. Sancho ...
Then in Midfield
................................. Bruno
.............. Pogba
............................................... VDB
I expected OGS to try it out at Preseason, but the Toad thought otherwise.
Cc Afrodoc2 What site is that? Whoscored says he has played DM only 11 times in the last 6 years and most of that was with another more defensive minded player. For instance they counted 2 UCL and 2 EPL games with us last season as part of the 11. I am not sure VDB can work as the only defensive option with Pogba and Bruno. That midfield would be overrun and the defense would be too exposed. VDB is like Gundogan and even the ultra-attacking Pep is not playing Gundogan as the sole shield in midfield while Tuchel partners Jorginho (their VDB ) with workers like Kante or Kovacic. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by afrodoc2: 11:33am On Aug 24, 2021 |
nitrogen: Do you think that VDB can be Utd’s Busquets. If we are going to be a possession based or direct play team, we may just need a player that can recycle possession or/and make short, safe and maybe incisive passes to our attacking/central midfielders.
Or better still, consider two DMs, VDB with one of Fred or McTom making the interceptions and tackles. Bruno, Pogba and Sancho as AMs/wingers in a 4-2-3-1 set up.
VDB is definitely very useful, our manager is just not ready to figure out how to use these players. This could be an option. VDB with one out of McTominay and Fred. If we can't get a CDM that can play solo we can play a double pivot in which one of them at least is comfortable with the ball. Probably try Fred and VDB first even though McTominay is so useful in both boxes and with set pieces. McTominay saved Lindelof's blushes against Leeds when he prevented a Bamford near post header. |

Oasis007:

Play VDB as DM..........!!!!!!!! If you mean play him as the most defensive midfielder there is no evidence in his career that he can do that. He has always had a more defensive partner with him. He is an 8 not a 6. |

B. Rodgers saw it as black. The ref thinks it’s white. Doesn’t mean it isn’t grey. Which is why i said it was a borderline foul. Some would give it and some won't. I wonder what he is trying to prove by cooking up arguments in his own head. |

TrebleChamp: I believe Pep and Klopp will get our midfielders playing good footy and press well, unless you believe Liverpool midfield is better than ours... They will get them playing better than they are playing now but don’t deceive yourself that they will play good footy. McTom for one won’t have even been promoted into the senior team by Pep and if Pep had met him he would have offloaded him. Klopp might have use for him though. Fred would also be better but might still not make the grade. There is a reason Pep was initially interested in him but then left him to us. The other player Pep left to us was Alexis Sanchez. That might tell you something. |

I said it was a borderline foul so saying it wasn’t a clear foul is out of point to what I was saying SINCE I never said it was a clear foul in the first place. |

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by afrodoc2: 7:34pm On Aug 23, 2021 |
eph12: That it could have gone either way shows that it wasn't a clear foul. We've had worse calls go against us and we have benefited from easier calls. The players should be more aware of their surroundings and immediate danger, especially as they're in their own half. Maybe it was as a result of Matic and Martial on the field, but the lack of energy was very evident yesterday. Could we have had more energy and directness in our game if Tom paired Fred and Sancho or James started ahead of Martial? I think so I never said it was a clear foul. Go back to my initial post. I said it was a borderline foul. It happens in football. |

eph12: It looked normal to me though. I felt Bruno could have protected the ball better It could have gone either way. He wasn't romancing the ball or trying flicks before getting robbed. He didn't make a straight pass to an opponent and it wasn't like he had poor ball control under no pressure. He got body-checked and the ref didn't call it. It happens in football. |

eph12: Not trying to judge, just wondering if this current system will allow him thrive Yes i get you. By that i meant it is still too early to assess. I believe he will work well with Bruno, Pogba, Greenwood and Cavani. Even AWB will look better as their understanding improves. He is a willing passer and AWB is a willing runner. It might not be Sancho/Hakimi but the right side will definitely improve. Our problem is in the 2 holding midfield roles. I take no pleasure in saying neither McTominay nor your man are good enough. We move the ball through midfield like we are rolling a boulder up a hill. The sensible move would be to get a proper CDM and/or give VDB a shot but the man in charge has blinders on. |

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by afrodoc2: 10:15am On Aug 23, 2021 |
eph12: I don't see how a very good DM will cover up some of these deficiencies we have refused to address in the team. We can't continue to lose the ball in our half so easily and not expect to be punished. Not having a good press resistant CDM is one of the main reasons why we lose the ball so easily in our half. If our CDMs were agile, able to receive the ball on the half turn, and had decent range of passing Maguire and Lindelof wouldn't have to always run with the ball out of defense. They have to do this because whenever they pass the ball into Fred (who is not aware of danger) or McTom (who is too aware of danger) we lose the ball anyway. And of course when a CB keeps running out of defense with the ball he is asking for trouble. The manager himself appears to lack the ability to impact our build up play but that is no news. Most reasonable people already know he is limited. Part of his limitation however is not seeing the deficiency in that midfield. |

Lukaku had a very good game IMO. There is no way Pablo Mari didn't have nightmares last night. If not for some blind Bartimaeus Chelshit midfielders it would have been worse for the Assanal defence. |

The rest is hinged on departures... Bissouma would be perfect for us but for some reason we are not even looking at him. With someone like that we can play Pogba in central midfield without having panic attacks. |

we still need like 5 more signings to be up there with mancity(squad depth wise) but that doesn't become an excuse for the fraud not to win something.we have seen teams with worse squad depth win trophies.(liverpool 19/20,leicester 15/16 etc comes to mind) 5 ke? |

patrickmuf: If Ole manages the squad we have well, I believe even we can develop this resistance to star injury...
At City, game time is spread across and that's how it should be, they all look sharp when called upon but here, Bruno, Pogba, AWB, Shaw, Maguire, Rashford and McFred must play every game, how then will VDB, Telles, Dalot and the rest not look off space when situation forces Ole's hand to use them?
When Rashford and Cavani returns, I will like to see how Ole handles our attack...We too can share game time around while remaining incredibly strong, it's up to Ole to figure out how best to use the squad at his disposal. Here's hoping he gets it right. Hopefully the guy will grow a pair and start making use of his squad. I am sure he won't have any problems rotating the forwards (apart from Bruno). The problem like you rightly pointed out is when it comes to resting Bruno, using VDB and resting our 1st choice defenders. |

It is also quite ridiculous to say that the only reason someone will believe City’s squad is better than our squad is to defend Amaka.
So it is impossible for a neutral person to look at that City squad and believe they are better? |

CapitalCee: They will avoid this question. So because City have a better DM than Man Utd just a single position, that means UTD as team lack quality? I don’t sleep on Nairaland. Anyway I have replied his question. And you can’t choose for me which question or topic I should get involved in. The guy made a statement that Rodri was not better than McTom and i decided to tackle it seeing that this was one the foundation stones of his claim that they didn’t have a better squad. And I am happy to say he has now retracted that statement. Problem solved. What I like is when people argue/debate with logic and facts and not make emotional and hyperbolic statements like the Rodri statement or for instance saying that Gio Reyna in 2020 was already better than Sancho P.S And the debate was not about whether we have or lack quality. We have loads of quality. It is just my opinion that the City squad just has more. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by afrodoc2: 5:49am On Aug 22, 2021 |
patrickmuf: Well, it's generally accepted we need a DM however City more than ever do have deficiencies...Cancelo was deployed at LB today just because Pep doesn't trust his LB options...They're lacking in the CF position so, while they might blitz past Norwich, they'll struggle against top opposition...
No matter how I want to excuse Ole, I think the buck stops at his table, he has to find a way to utilize the squad better, that's one area where Pep has mastered, we have the numbers and quality, we just need to make it count... Do you know all these things you said about not excusing Amaka and us having a really good squad can be true and City might still have a better squad? I wanted Amaka sacked back in the first half of last season. I am not interested in excusing him. He has disappointed in some ridiculous ways so I no send the guy as a manager. However I still believe Pep’s squad is better. They are more resistant to star injury and for most people it would even be difficult to name with certainty who the top stars on that team are. |
