Yes, i have been commenting on Evans decline here but someone said i was over-reacting. A guy that spent 5 years with Rio and Vida is playing like a shaky rookie.

coogar: we didn't have the personnel cos we had zombies like evans, valencia, fletcher, jones stinking up the place....rafael alone gives us 40% penetration. i think LVG should buy fabio back......rafael needs a back up & the twin brother is the only one that is cheap & won't throw tantrums for being on the bench...

none of smalling or valencia has 1/10th of rafael's IQ. jones is too clumsy to play that role too. if rafael gets injured, we would revert back to the laboured performance we have seen earlier in the season. there's nothing wrong with the system, it's just that we have too many players in that defence that loves to hide.



4-4-2 will easily be exposed if we meet a team with a solid 4-2-3-1 like chelsea or city(when they mean business). their 5-man midfield would swallow our middle 4 and once they get control of the midfield, we are toast! evans scares me & it seems jones/smalling cannot go through a season without picking an injury.

If according to you Jones,Smalling and Evans can not play in the 3 man defense that leaves the left footed trio of Blackett,Rojo and Blind, i don't think that is ideal.....and if one gets injured who comes in. ALL our players are comfortable playing the 4 man defense....there is no confusion as to duties.
If we persist with 3-5-2 we will lose too many easy points early in the season and by the time the players understand the formation we will be playing catch up on Spurs,Arsenal,City,Liverpool e.t.c WE NEED TO GRAB THE CHEAP POINTS AVAILABLE IN THESE EASY MATCHES.

Yes it gives more control in midfield but without real penetration. In attack it can work only if Di Maria is one of the 2 in attack IMO.
And as you just acknowledged we don't have the personnel at the back to play it. Those guys at the back are not comfortable on the ball enough for the 3-5-2.
We now have the personnel to play 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 and these 2 formations give us both CONTROL in midfield(in advanced areas rather than 3-5-2 where most of our control is deep in our half) and PENETRATION.

Yes it morphed into 3-5-2 when we had the ball and were pressing. However having a ball playing midfielder like Blind dropping into defense is different from having 3 central defenders who are not as comfortable with the ball.

The problem with the 3-5-2 is not the system itself but the fact that our wing backs and central defenders obviously appear confused about what their individual roles are. The defenders are not comfortable enough passing the ball to be the foundation of our attacks and even more importantly the wing backs do not know when to "stay" and when to "travel".

Hopefully the 3 man experiment at the back has been dropped for good.
We should be playing either the 4-4-2 diamond of yesterday or 4-2-3-1 depending on the players available and the opposition.

i doubt carrick will get into this team again - he's too slow for what van gaal requires unless we play blind as a left back & we use the double-pivot of carrick & herrera.

Blind understands that role so well in terms of positioning,continuity of play,angled passing e.t.c Just like Carrick but he does things quicker than Carrick.
My concern with Blind is his strength and body balance.He looks a bit lightweight and was shrugged off easily a few times.
I guess Blind will carry out his duties more by interceptions and positioning.
However we still need one more DM in January,preferably a physical type.
