i would be more concerned how we allowed the cross to get into the box in the first place. any of nesta, vidic, terry or kompany would have been beaten in that same scenario. 1 v 1 with a good cross coming in always favours the striker. even if smalling got there first, there's a high probability of putting the ball in his own net as he would be facing de gea.



smalling is our best CB.
he may not be the A+ defender but who would be with the disjointed number of appearances. he needs game time to perfect his art. he's miles better than jones & he should be partnering rojo in every game.

valencia's direct runs in the middle would punish alex song & noble. di maria cannot do intricate passing in & around the edge of the box. if LVG doesn't want rooney there, mata can come in.
