By James Sowole in Akure A first class traditional ruler, the Oniyani of Iyawo Akoko in Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State, Oba Joel Sunday Daodu, was at the weekend kidnapped by gunmen. The monarch, THISDAY gathered, was kidnapped along Ose Oba Akoko axis of Ikare-Owo road almost the same spot where the Regent of Akungba Akoko, Princess Toyin Omosowon was kidnapped about two years ago. It was gathered that the monarch was riding in the same vehicle with his second-in-command when the abductors struck. The monarch’s abductors had demanded a ransom of N15 million before the Oba could regain his freedom. A colleague of the kidnapped monarch, the Owa of Ogbagi, Oba Victor Ojo Adetona, said a brother to the Oniyani had called him that the abductors had demanded for N15 million. Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Ondo State Command, Mr. Femi Joseph, said the command would not encourage payment of ransom or any money to kidnappers. He, however, said men of the command were already on the trail of the abductors in order to ensure safety return of the monarch. Speaking on the incident, the Olowa of Ogbagi said it was high time the government provided security for monarchs in the state. He said they had written to the government on the need for at least on policeman for monarchs but nothing has been done. He also decried the treatment being given to traditional rulers, who were being treated with respect in the past but had not been turned to another thing. The monarch therefore demanded that government should revert to the old tradition whereby Obas were being treated with respect and honour. https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2017/04/17/gunmen-kidnap-first-class-oba-in-ondo-2/

Those who think that Nigeria does not have what it takes for global competitiveness in the knowledge economy should better have a rethink With the innovative skills shown by the talented Nigerian students, there are positive signals that the country will not left out in the 21st century knowledge society. Just this summer, no fewer than seven students from both public and private schools will showcase their creative skills at the First Global Robot Challenges slated to hold in Washington, the United States of America with 149 other nations. The students who are presently based in a tech studio, according to the promoters, were picked from different schools in Lagos. Many of them, it was learnt, have represented Nigeria in similar competitions in the past. Founded by philanthropic inventor, Dean Kamen to inspire a passion for science and technology leadership and innovation among the world’s more than two billion youths, First Global provides the framework for an Olympics-style robotics event that drives home the importance of obtaining the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) skills needed by future leaders to overcome the greatest challenges facing our world today and tomorrow. “By engaging the students of the world in a collaborative competition to help solve the world’s most pressing problems, FIRST Global inspires students to learn the skills they will need to make the discoveries their parents and grandparents would consider miracles, fantasies, or just plain science fiction,” FIRST Global Founder Dean Kamen, said. For the national coordinator of the programme in Nigeria, Mrs. Remi Willoughby, who addressed Technology Journalists at the weekend, “We need to fully address the evident deficit in science, technology, engineering and mathematics in our educational system. Research has shown that children will rather take courses in arts and commercial subjects than these ones. Unfortunately this is not helping us. The government needs to find a way to encourage more students to take these courses in the secondary and tertiary institutions.” “We have gathered some of the best students in robotics to represent Nigeria in Washington. These students were picked based on their interest and performances in past competitions in Nigeria and internationally. We look forward to an exciting outing.”, Willoughby added. Also speaking, the Managing Director, Aramex Nigeria and co-sponsor of the First Global project in Nigeria, Faisal Jarmakani described the opportunity as “timely”. According to him, “Nigeria needs to find its place on the global map of technology in developing countries. Without any doubt this competition will dictate the future of technology advancement and we are seeing it happen in our very own eyes.” He hinted that the decision to co-sponsor, with his brother Omar Jarmakani, is based on the need to encourage the youth to embrace technology and robotics. “This will further ignite their passion and bolster their skills – emboldening them to become mentors, advocates and professionals in the area of stem in Nigeria.” According to Emeritus Professor of Physiology at the College of Medicine of the University of Lagos Soga Sofola, also a national coordinator of the First Global Olympics, the students have been spending time together since January, trying to master the rudiments of Robots design through tutorials in maths, physics and engineering including programming especially using Java, carried out by competent instructors. They have also started building their robots since the arrival of the components, a couple of weeks ago, he said http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/04/7-nigerian-students-fly-countrys-flag-first-global-robot-olympics/

Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr has revealed that Vincent Enyeama has problems with the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF). OSC Lille goalkeeper Enyeama quit the Super Eagles in 2015 after a row with former coach Sunday Oliseh. Rohr has since stated that the door is open for 34-year-old shot-stopper to return to the Super Eagles. Enyeama has over 100 caps for Nigeria. “The door is open for Vincent Enyeama in the national team,”, Rohr said. “I think he had a problem with the federation, so he wanted someone to call him before coming. “They called him or they didn’t reach him I don’t know,” the German tactician continued. “We have three goalkeepers at the moment but we will welcome everybody who will respect our work rate, solidarity and humility. “And not expect special favours. So the door is opened also to Enyeama.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/04/eagles-door-still-open-enyeama-rohr/ Cc lalasticlala

Chinese officials have issued a stark warning that WWIII is imminent as the United States is set to intervene in North Korea as Kim Jong-un prepares another nuclear test, despite warnings from the international community. The North Korean regime has ignored sanctions from the UN over the nuclear testing and concerns are mounting as the hermit nation prepares further missile launches in defience of warnings from the US that their ‘strategic patience’ was over, with North Korea declaring that their preparations for war with the US are complete instead of complying. There is now specualtion that President Trump is about to launch a pre-emptive strike against North Korea before Kim Jon-un’s nuclear testing takes places, following the recent bombing in Afganistan and Syria by the United States. Express reports: American bombers have been placed in Guam ready to strike if the call comes. North Korea has denounced the US for bringing “huge nuclear strategic assets” to the Korean peninsula, with a US aircraft carrier group headed for the region in preperation for leader Kim Jong-Un’s latest demonstration of his country’s military muscle. Tensions have been growing ever since Mr. Trump launched 59 Tomahawk missiles at a Syrian airbase in response to a deadly gas attack believed to have been carried out on the orders of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad. The US President has followed up that intervention by dropping the largest non-nuclear bomb – known as the Mother of all Bombs (MOAB) – on an underground ISIS cave network in Afghanistan, reportedly killing at least 36 jihadis. And earlier this week, the US leader tweeted that North Korea was “looking for trouble”, and vowed to take on the hermit state alone if necessary as tensions near breaking point. Pyongyang’s vice-foreign minister Han Song Ryol said the situation on the Korean peninsula is now in a “vicious cycle” and also accused President Trump of “making trouble” with “aggressive” tweets. He said: “Trump is always making provocations with his aggressive words.” “It’s not the DPRK but the US and Trump that makes trouble.” The surprising and unpredictable nature of Mr. Trump’s military strategy has put foreign leaders on red alert. Russia and Iran, who are supporting Assad in the ongoing Syrian conflict, have both warned of serious repercussions if the US attacks the regime’s forces again. One North Korea expert has even warned Russia and China, Pyongyang’s major ally could unite against the White House because of Mr. Trump’s aggressive stance on Syria and North Korea. Professor Rudiger Frank told German magazine Focus: “The Americans have been able to drive a wedge between the then Soviet Union and the People’s Republic of China since the 1970s. “ But now the US is facing both countries relatively aggressively. Russia and China have a common opponent who unites them.” In recent years, Kim Jong-un has launched nuclear tests to coincide with ‘the Day of the Sun’, an annual public holiday in North Korea to commemorate the birth of the country’s founder, Kim Il-sung. Experts believe a North Korean nuclear test could be imminent, with satellite images revealing “unusually high levels of activity” at the Punggye-Ri nuclear test site. China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Friday the situation on the Korean peninsula was heading down “an irreversible route” unless there was a drastic change of diplomacy. Wang was speaking at a joint media briefing with visiting French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault. US Vice President Mike Pence travels to South Korea on Sunday on a long-planned 10-day trip to Asia. The domestic nuclear bunker business is also booming in America, – thanks in part to Mr. Trump’s shock US election win. Bomb-shelter builder Gary Lynch said he was being kept incredibly busy due to a growing fear of a ‘Trump-ocalypse’ – a nuclear war sparked by the new president’s erratic behavior. http://www.alternativenewsnetwork.net/world-war-3-now-inevitable-china/ Cc lalasticlala

Saleh Dunoma, managing director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), says the runway of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, would be ready by April 17, two days ahead of the deadline. He gave the assurance in a statement signed by Ariyo Akinfenwa, media consultant to the minister of state for aviation. “We will be ready April 17 but we are leaving the remaining two days for Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA),” the statement read. “We have written to them and they will come by today (Sunday) to do the preliminary inspection. “They have to certify the airport that what we have done is in accordance with their standards. “If there is any observation as a result of the inspection, we will now make sure we carry out corrections.” Dunoma maintained that with the work done, the April 19 deadline for the reopening of the airport is no longer in doubt. “All the critical items of work are 100 percent except may be two items; which of course are the markings and the cleaning,” he said. “Asphalt work is 100 per cent, markings have reached almost 70 percent and the airfield lighting system has reached 80 percent.” According to him, the authority also used the opportunity provided by the closure of the airport to address other Airport Excellence in Safety (APEX) related items. “We are now levelling all the airfield lightings’ locations, all the installations and flash with the ground surface,” he said. “In case of any skidding, there will not be concrete projection above the ground surface.” Dunoma explained that the newly constructed runway does not need calibration because the previous navigational aids were not tampered with. “The runway does not need calibration. All we need to check is to make sure there is 100 per cent illumination,” he said. “Calibration is done periodically. When the time come for calibration, the appropriate authority will calibrate the Instrument Landing System (ILS).” Dunoma also noted that the terminal building was also ready for flight operations. The Abuja airport was shut on March 8 for six weeks to enable Julius Berger rebuild the 3.6 kilometre runway. The runway, which was constructed in 1982, was meant to last for 20 years, but had been in use for 35 years without major repairs and maintenance. https://www.thecable.ng/abuja-runway-will-ready-monday-says-faan-md Cc lalasticlala

Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa''ad Abubakar has noted with dismay the rate at which women engage in street begging which he said was against the Islamic teachings. He spoke at the graduation of 2000 women trained on various skill and trades which was organized by the Wife of Sokoto state Governor, Hajiya Mairo Tambuwal in collaboration with the Sokoto State Zakkat and Endowment Committee. According to him, begging generate more harm than good in the society. He encouraged women to be productive and desist from begging. "Women are the pillars for societal development, thus they need to be encouraged and supported to be self reliant so that they can contribute more to our development," he said. The monarch added:"Empowering women is key to a better, peaceful and productive society." While thanking the wife of the Governor for initiating the programme, he called on the beneficiaries to utilize their acquired skills for the benefit of their households, immediate societies and the country at large. Earlier, Mrs Tambuwal commended the Sultan for championing the course of women in the country. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/general/shun-begging-be-productive-sultan-tasks-northern-women/193716.html Cc lalasticlala

The Kaduna State Governor Malam Nasir El-Rufai has said that in Kaduna state there is no security vote for the governor. This came as he challenged the National Assembly to publish its security vote saying that ”if the leaders of the NASS have security votes allocated to or personally collected by them, they might wish to disclose such.” In a statement by Samuel Aruwan the governor’s spokesman el-Rufai said the budget of the state states what was voted to security agencies and nothing was given to the governor. The statement reads “The Kaduna state government has presented details of its security budget. What was presented represents the only security vote for the entire government,” he said. “As the figures show, there is no security vote for the governor of Kaduna state. This may be a shock to those used to the notion of security votes as barely disguised slush funds, but we do not operate such a system in Kaduna. “Our budgets specify what is voted as assistance to security agencies, and its expenditure is properly recorded and accounted for. These are not monies given to or spent by the governor. “If the leaders of the NASS have security votes allocated to or personally collected by them, they might wish to disclose such. Our security spending does not operate like the NASS system of sharing public funds in such an opaque fashion that even NASS members do not know how their entire budget is broken down or what the leadership gets as its ‘running costs’. “The figures in the pay slips presented for the Honourable Speaker are in stark contrast to the declaration by The Economist regarding the earnings of NASS members. One of the claims cannot be right.” “However, notwithstanding the intemperate response of the spokesman of the house of representatives, the demand that the NASS budget be made public will not go away,” he further said. “It is not personal, and there is a strong civic constituency that is demanding it. The sooner all of us in public life recognised that the game has changed, and that segments of civil society and indeed everyday citizens of Nigeria, are much more aware, astute and advanced than the state of our politics, the better for our democratic health.” The governor’s spokesman said the people who leaked his memo to President Muhammadu Buhari should be blamed and should not be brought into the matter. “The NASS leadership has been promising ad infinitum to publish the breakdown of the opaque, one-line budget. It should simply do so. Prompt release of the 2015 and 2016 breakdowns, along with the proposed figures for 2017, would be a good way to start,” it read. “As things stand today, even if Mallam Nasir El-Rufai refrains from further commentary on this matter, the genie is already out of the bottle. The public will not accept a secretive NASS, or any other branch of government for that matter.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/04/no-security-vote-kaduna-state-governor-el-rufai/ Cc lalasticlala Mynd44

Kaduna State governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, yesterday descended heavily on the National Assembly (NASS) members, saying the lawmakers are not whole-heartedly committed to the corruption fight of the Buhari administration. He also said that the annual budget of the NASS lacked transparency. The governor stated this in his goodwill message at the closing ceremony of the five-day retreat of the National Assembly management personnel held in Kaduna. His words: “The National Assembly is seen as an opposition to the fight against corruption, the National Assembly, particularly the Senate, is seen as one of the fighters of the war against corruption, I can be blunt, and that image has to be worked on, now that we are going towards election year, the leadership and members of the National Assembly have to do something about the narratives. “I don’t believe that it is entirely true, I also don’t believe it is entirely false, but it is important that the National Assembly do something about its image”. On the budget of the NASS, the governor said: “No transparency in your (NASS) budget, nobody knows your budget, how much you get paid. Publications are made about your salaries and allowances that I don’t believe are true, but they cannot be defended, because there is no transparency about your budget, personal cost and so on and so forth. I think you can do something about that to clear all the rumours and remove all the evil stories that are largely untrue”. But in a swift reaction, the Senate Leader, Senator Ahmed Lawan, who represented the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, on the occasion, countered the governor, saying that the NASS supported the fight against graft at all levels of governance. “In the National Assembly, we fight corruption through our support and as a matter of fact, the anti corruption agencies are our creation and for our budget, it is always in the public domain”. He said the legislature and executive must work together to deliver on promises to Nigerians, adding that, Nigerians expected higher and better performances in terms of service. “As legislators we are prepared to continue to support the administration of President Buhari either through the fight against corruption or in the confirmation of political appointees. Nigerians will change the change if we fail to perform”, he said. However, reacting to the allegation of budgetary transparency of the NASS, the Speaker, House of Representatives Hon. Yakubu Dogara, told the governor that instructions had already been given to the appropriate quarters to publish the budget of the NASS. Apparently, feeling unhappy with the statement of the governor, the speaker said: “You will have some kind of misfortune if you attempt to join issues with intellectuals, but as intellectuals we expand issues and add to discussion, so I will like to challenge you to champion the call for transparency in budgeting and budgetary process of NASS to other arms of government. “We want to see clearly how chief executives of states are paid, what they spend monthly as security votes, and also publish what happens to local government funds.” http://sunnewsonline.com/nass-not-committed-to-anti-graft-war-el-rufai/ Cc lalasticlala Mynd44

- Sheriff says he walked out on party leaders because he was disrespected - According to Sheriff, he was not given his due recognition as national chairman of the PDP - Sheriff says he is senior to Jonathan in PDP's party arrangement Factional leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Ali Modu Sheriff has disclosed his reason for walking out on leaders of the party during a meeting organized by former President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday, April 6. Reports say that Jonathan had organised the meeting to solve the deepening leadership crisis in party but Sheriff was enraged and abandoned the event very into the programme held at the Shehu Musa Yar'Adua Centre in Abuja. According to reports, Sheriff said he was not given due recognition as the national chairman as pronounced by an Appeal Court in Port Harcourt earlier this year. He said: “I respect Dr. Jonathan. He is a former President but as of today, I'm the most senior member of this party. Therefore, if I respect him, the respect must be reciprocated. "You can't call me for a meeting of PDP and say I cannot address the meeting as national chairman of the party. We are here for PDP stakeholders' meeting and the PDP has only one national chairman, which is Ali Modu Sheriff. There is no PDP meeting that will take place under whatever arrangement that I will not open the session as national chairman. Today, I'm the most senior member of this party". "I think Governor Seriake Dickson made a proposal for reconciliation. And we have accepted. Some people want to deviate from this programme, to bring agenda which was not part of it. And as national chairman of the party, what I have told you people in my office when Dickson brought the report is the only thing that we have agreed at this moment. And I will not be party for anybody using me for another programme. I'm not going to be part of it." The meeting between factional national chairmen of the PDP, summoned by Jonathan ended in a deadlock as Ali Modu Sheriff walked out. Attempts to get Sheriff to return to the event after he walked out proved abortive. https://www.naij.com/1098337-revealed-why-i-walked-jonathan-pdp-leaders-sheriff.html Cc lalasticlala

- A lawyer and senior advocate of Nigeria Mike Ozekhome has berated the federal government over harassment on a judge of the Federal High Court in Abuja - Ozekhome called on the federal government to tender an apology to Justice Adeniyi Ademola of the late night raid in his house - Ozekhome's statement came after a Federal High Court discharged and acquitted Justice Ademola of all charges against him by DSS - He also urged the Lagos state government to do same and recall Ademola's wife as the the head of service in the state In a statement released by the senior lawyer, the Department of State Service were accused of imposing false corruption charges on the judge. Ozekhome's statement came after a Federal High Court discharged and acquitted Justice Ademola of all charges against him by DSS. The senior lawyer also called on the National Judicial Council (NJC) to recall Justice Ademola so that he can commence sitting on the Bench. He also urged the Lagos state government to do same and recall Ademola's wife as the the head of service in the state. ‘The discharge of Justice Niyi Ademola, Wife and Joe Agi, SAN; Matters Arising’, said the discharge of the defendants based on their no-case-submission, was “an obviously laughable and anti-climax after all the “gra gra”, grand standing, posturing, rabble rousing and wanton degradation of the judiciary by their transducers”. Ozekhome said: “This discharge, after the horrific humiliation of Justice Ademola, whose home was savagely invaded by rampaging, masked and hooded DSS operatives, between the ungodly and unholy hours of 12 mid night to 5am! The senior lawyer said: "Windows and doors were bestially broken down and the Judge whisked off like a common criminal inside a pick up van". “We were told to shut up, not to complain, because the government was fighting the monster called corruption. Never mind that the inner corridors and dark recesses of the same government reek and stink of putrid and horrendous corruption, with the very government rising up on each occasion to defend its corrupt officials. “A case of wanting to sweep your neighbour’s house clean when your own house is dirty and stinking. A clear case of attempting to remove the mole from your neighbour’s eye when a log is embedded in yours. Justice Ademola was forced to abdicate his judicial functions. It was argued by the anti- corruption revisionists and tyrannical dictators led by the never accountable Presidential Anti-Corruption Advisory Committee (that has since usurped the powers of the Attorney General of the Federation under section 174 of the 1999 Constitution and who are using the anti corruption mantra to settle scores and overwhelm and suffocate opposition, dissenting voices and critical segments of the society, that the DSS could never err. “They stood logic on its head, bastardized the Constitution and our corpus juris. They even extended DSS’s internal security functions to include fighting corruption, if need be, in our matrimonial bedrooms and breaking down houses of suspects who did not even resist arrest. “Justice Ademola ‘s wife was promptly sacked as Head of Service of Lagos state government. They were convicted and punished them unheard. Even God Himself, being ever so omniscient and omnipotent, did not do that to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, notwithstanding that He had already seen them committing the offence of eating of the forbidden fruit. “When the real trial commences, their legal hollowness and emptiness stare them in their opaque and vindictive faces “Ademola’s discharge without even being called upon to defend himself, is a great and bitter lesson to this government that is fast descending into the abyss of fascism, dictatorship, tyranny and absolutism, through the cheap, self-serving, low quality advice of its minders; that the fundamental rights of Nigerians remain inalienable and inviolable; that the judiciary and rule of law remain necessary indispensable concomitants and corollary adjuncts of constitutional democracy which we operate. He said tit is sad that the rule of law was abused in democratic country like Nigeria. “That rule of Law, rather than rule of the thumb and brute force, is what determines the success or otherwise of democracy. “To remove the odious and negative tar of shame, odium and obloquy on these respected members of the society, the EFCC and federal government must make restitution by tendering a public apology immediately to Justice Ademola, his wife and Mr Joe Agi," Ozekhome said. “The NJC should immediately recall justice Ademola to commence sitting on the Bench. The Lagos state government should immediately recall Ademola’s wife to her post. “We must be careful not to derail this hard won democracy, which some of us used the best part of our youth fighting for and are still fighting for. “Those currently running and ruining the country were nowhere to be found then. They comfortably hid behind their wives’ backs. Like Roman’s Emperor Nero, they enjoyed and pursued triffles while their country’s edifice burnt," he said. https://www.naij.com/1098175-you-apologize-justice-ademola-ozekhome-tells-fg.html Cc lalasticlala

Over the past few weeks, there has been a lot of TBoss noise going around. It is either from those who think TBoss is the greatest thing that has happened to Nigeria after the oil boom, or it is from those who think she is a modern day Delilah who shouldn’t even be allowed to breathe. Whatever you think of her, though, you cannot erase the fact that she has found her way to the finals of Big Brother Naija (#BBNaija), a competition which has equally divided opinion among the hypocrites, not-so-hypocrites and the die-hard fans. During her stroll to the finals, I have read several ridiculous theories about how she is dating Big Brother, how the whole world hates her (I even saw a video on that! SMH), how every man she kisses on the show gets evicted and so on. Let me put it on record here that I also do not like her personality a lot. If we were going by personalities, Efe will get my nod – easily. 1. She is the most marketable Yes, there are three women (duh!) in the finals and yes, there are two men (duh!). But when you are picking the most marketable #BBNaija winner, it has to be TBoss. She is the prettiest (leave hating jor) and she is the most well-spoken of all the ladies. Apart from that, she is the one that looks most like a celebrity. Ah-mean, whatawetalkingabout? She’s F**.Cking yellow! 2. She’s the only one with an obvious been-to factor I don’t know if the others can claim to have been-to, but once you see TBoss, you see a been-to. And while this ought to fall under making her the most marketable, I have decided to allow this reason stand alone. It is that big a reason, that’s why. Been-to-ness in Nigeria is a big deal and she sure fits it. 3. She is the most controversial of the remaining five. Who else divides opinion like she does? Who among the remaining housemates vying for the N25million has had this much conspiracy theory thrown at them? We have heard of how all the boys she has kissed got evicted. We have heard how the duvet with which she sleeps is cursed. We have heard of how Big Brother has a crush on her and has kept her on because of that. We have heard this, we have heard that. Everywhere you turn, it is TBoss this, that girl that. If controversy sells, she will be richer than that boy, Mark. 4. That babe is the most interesting character. Do I have to talk about how interesting she has been since the show started? Well, apart from the fact that she doesn’t dance much at house parties. You might want to say Bisola is interesting but there is a thin line that separates being interesting and being talented. Bisola is one talented woman but forget…when it comes to in-ta-res-tina, there is only one win-na. 5.TBoss has luck on her side. A lot of it. Football fans will understand this a lot. Remember Greece in Euro 2008? Leicester City in EPL 2016? And Chelsea in that UEFA CL they won with Roberto DiMatteo as manager? The monarch said this in a post he shared on IG some hours ago "When Jaiz bank came up with the idea of getting a license for the operation of the bank, they proposed the funding of the bank’s capital with interest and I said no, you can’t fund a non-interest bank with interest. The required amount to be issued license was N5 billion at that time and they had only N1 billion.https://www.instagram.com/p/BScAyWmB8WW/
