Amnesty International (AI) has said that it is investigating the clash between the Nigerian Army and the members of the Nnamdi Kanu led Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, in Umuahia, Abia state. AI, in a statement on Friday by its Director in Nigeria, Osai Ojigho, said it was deeply concerned with the reports of cases of violence and illegal loss of lives following the clashes, cautioning the Nigerian army on the use of force on what it called armless civilians. Amnesty International recalled that in November 2016, it “published details of an investigation discovering mass extrajudicial executions and other serious violations by the Nigerian security forces during peaceful demonstrations by Biafran activists and other gatherings”. AI said with the recent reports of rights abuses in Abia, it was calling for the prioritization of the protection of the lives of the people by the Nigerian government. It further noted that the Nigerian authorities should rein in on the security forces and ensure accountability after reports of violence. “We are deeply concerned by reports of violence and alleged loss of lives across Nigeria following clashes between the Nigerian military and supporters of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Umuahia, Abia state. “We are calling on the authorities to ensure the security forces prioritize the protection of people and avoid excessive force. “We are investigating all allegations of human rights violations and urge the authorities to investigate and quickly bring those suspected of unlawful killings and other serious violations to justice,” Ojigho said. Meanwhile, Nigerian Army on Friday said politicians were behind the agitation by Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB. Director of Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Sani Usman, lamented that they were doing for for their selfish interest. “It is so sad and unfortunate that a particular group of people, for political expediency and mischief, are trying to set the military and Nigerian society against each other”, he said. Veteran Nigerian singer, Eedris Abdulkareem has said that his feud with American rapper, 50 cent earned Nigerian musicans respect all over the country. Recall 13 years ago, Eedris Abdulkareem attempted to sit in a seat reserved for 50 Cent, but was prevented from doing so. The American rapper was billed to headline the annual Star Mega Jam when a mild drama ensued aboard an ADC airline from Lagos to Port Harcourt. 50 Cent asked him to get out of his seat, Eedris refused and told him that Nigeria was his country and that he has the right to seat anywhere. Now, speaking in an interview with LIB, the “JAGAJAGA” who claimed he was protesting to the treatment given to foreign and local acts during the musical tour, said the beef was the revolution that got every artiste respected in the Nigerian industry and outside the country. In his words; When I was on the plane with 50, and he asked me to get the hell out of his seat. I said no, this is Nigeria, this is my country. ‘He can’t come here and tell me shit, that isn’t gonna happen. That was the revolution that got every artistes respected in the Nigerian industry and it took them all over the country.’ ‘That was the defending moment for the Nigerian artistes, I can remember at the back stage, Psquare was sent away, a couple of people were also sent a way and I wasn’t happy about it.’ ‘But moving forward, I’m happy for the Nigerian Industry and am happy with everything that’s happening today.’ 3 years later, in 2007, the pair squashed off their beef when 50 Cent came to Nigeria to perform at media launch of the KORA Awards in Abuja, Eedris publicly apologised to him on stage. The Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Saliu Adetunji, has in a statement described the crowns given to the 21 new kings in Ibadan as fake. In a press statement released by the Director, Media and Public Affairs to the monarch, Adeola Oloko, after the monarch received members of the Council of Authentic Ibadan Mogajis who paid him a solidarity visit at his palace on Tuesday. He said that he waited for 40 years before he was made a king, urging the high chiefs who were crowned king by the state government to wait for their turn to become kings. Olubadan said; “I started as a Mogaji. I was moving step by step before I assumed the throne after 40 years. I thank God for that. We must all love one another. If you love yourself and hate others, your purpose of love is nothing. I was called by the elders of my family to come and become a Mogaji more than 40 years ago. I rejected it and for three years, they were persuading me. “In trying to convince me, the representative of my family told me that it could be that one day I would become a king. I then accepted it and became the Mogaji of my family. I waited on God and he made me a king. “Those who were crowned a few weeks ago know within themselves that they are wearing fake crowns, it is just a carton crown. I began my journey more than 40 years, why can’t they wait for their turn. If you don’t wait for your turn, you will be on the wrong side of destiny.” He added; “The Olubadan described as untrue and unfounded the statement credited to a group of Ibadan elders that Kabiyesi had consented to the controversial chieftaincy review embarked upon by the Oyo State Government resulting in the controversial crowning of 21 new kings. “Oba Adetunji stated that the elders should not mislead Ibadan people into believing what he did not say, as what he said was that Governor Ajimobi, over whom they had come to plead, was his son and that he would not want a third party intervention over the matter. The Olubadan said for the avoidance of doubt, his opposition to the elevation of high chiefs to kingship status without domain remained the same. “The Olubadan said that he could not see how he would bless the high chiefs who had refused to wait for their turn before stepping forward to take crowns from the government, contrary to our tradition and custom. “The king said that the same Ibadan Elders’ Forum stoutly opposed the former Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala’s move to elevate six baales in their letter dated April 24, 2009. On page two of that letter titled, ‘The composition of Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs’, signed by Ambassador Olu Sanu and Onaolapo Ajibola, they stated, “The (Ibadan Chieftaincy) system had worked for ages and ensured peace and stability in Ibadan land and the forum would therefore not want the government to tamper with the system in order not to create confusion and ill feeling.’ “The first-class monarch has therefore urged the Ibadan elders to stop contradicting themselves and creating confusion for peace and progress of Ibadan land.” http://www..ng/news/wearing-fake-crowns-olubadan-tells-21-newly-crowned-kings-ibadan Cc lalasticlala

Prof Ango Abdullahi -spokesperson of the Northern Elders Forum, a think-tank for the 19 Northern states, has said that the north is ready if Nigeria decides to break up. In an interview with Sunday Sun, Ango, a politician, professor of Agronomy, one-time Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University who attended four constitutional conferences in Nigeria threw a challenge to those who think that the North is afraid of Nigeria’s disintegration into more basic constituents. He said the North was ever ready for the dissolution and that the way to go about it was through the calling of a formal meeting with complete powers to terminate the legal relationships between the constituent parts in Nigeria. According to him, If we agree that we should live together as a people and as a country, so be it, but if the general consensus is that Nigerians want to go their separate ways either on the basis of ethnicity, culture, history or religion, why not; why not, adding, “if anybody tells you that the large informed opinion in the North is against the dissolution of Nigeria, he is telling you lies.” Reacting to a question on the readiness of the North for a dissolution, the agronomist, replied: "Absolutely, absolutely, we are. It all depends on the selfish way people want to negotiate. I am 78 now and I also went to the only university in the country at the time in Ibadan. Nobody can tell me about the history of this country. I know a lot about it because I was very much awake and a grown up person to know what happened. "The people who argued for the creation of states in 1966/67 are the same people today who are asking for the restructuring of Nigeria with particular preference for regional arrangements. The South-west wants preferably a region, a region that was at one time under the leadership of Chief Awolowo, unless, of course, you are trying to ignore all the writings, all the things that had been written, particularly in their declaration called DAWN, Development Agenda for Western Nigeria, then you can ignore this." He further noted that "Biafrans who are saying the same thing. Chief Ekwueme is my respected leader. "He was in the 1995/96 conference. In fact, he led the Igbo socio-cultural group to the conference and their proposal in that conference was for Nigeria to become a confederate unit. And of course, at that time, perhaps, there was still the feeling that some hopes still remain that Nigeria should paddle along and perhaps they will overcome some of these differences. His proposal for confederate arrangement was defeated in the conference. I was there. But when he got the opportunity to review the report of the conference, a committee was set up to look at the report of the conference. He was the one who really worked for these so-called geo-political areas that is totally unconstitutional. They are not part of our constitution and this is one of the mistakes that the country is going through. Geo-political zones are not units in our constitutional arrangements. They are selfish conveniences of people who are perhaps clamouring for political positions, elective or otherwise, that are operating today to the detriment of good governance in this country." Prof Ango Abdullahi further reacted to why the North is ready for dissolution, speaking on the indices, he said: "The biggest indices other Nigerians do not want Nigeria; so I don’t see why the North should insist on having Nigeria. That is the biggest index I have. And this is on the basis of the recent statements. The Nigerian elite are the ones undermining the existence of the country and as long as they remain in the fore-front as elite and politicians, so long as we are going to have problems, so long will Nigeria not have the rapid development that we had hoped to when we got independence in 1960." He noted that there are statements hinting strongly at the dissolution. He said: "The Nwabuezes of this world. We sat with him a number of times, we argued, he is vehemently anti-North, anti-Hausa/Fulani. I spoke to him and he cannot deny this." Speaking on restructuring, he said: "Which restructuring? What restructuring do you want? Initially, there was a bloc country broken into regions. The regions were broken into states and today, there are 774 local governments, mainly in pursuance of so-called grassroots participation in government. What else is there? The only thing that we have not had…we had constitutional conferences so many of them. We had all these creation of states, which we were not able to do as civilians and we only waited for the military to come and do them and still people are saying tha t they are not satisfied with the structure as it is in Nigeria."Cc lalasticlala https://politics.naij.com/1086517-northern-nigeria-ready-breakup-prof-ango-abdullahi.html

The British Broadcasting Corporation, BBC, has apologised to the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, over reports it published claiming the Emir was connected with a financial recklessness that took place with the Kano Emirate fund. Recall that on April 24, the corporation had published a report claiming that the Emir was under probe by the Emirate’s anti-graft commission for alleged mismanagement of Kano Emirate fund. The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission had opened an investigation into allegations of ‘questionable expenditures’ running into billions of naira by the council over a short period of time. However, in the apology letter dated April 28, 2017 and sent to Emir Sanusi, Mr. Jamie Angus, editorial director at BBC, said that an April 24 story quoting the Chairman, of Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission, Muhyi Magaji, as saying that he (Sanusi) was amongst those being investigated in connection with alleged misappropriation of about N6 billion Emirate Council fund was “not correct.” “The recording of the interview was passed to another colleague in Abuja office, summarised in a despatch and then sent to London where the online report was written and published. “It is now clear from our investigations that the reports did not accurately reflect what we were told by Mr. Magaji, who had, in fact, made clear to our reporter that you had not been invited in for questioning and indeed that it was unlikely that there would be a need to invite you for question. “Accordingly, the report we published suggested that you were under personal investigation was not correct and for that I offer my sincere apologies,” Mr. Angus said. Recall also that the Kano state Emirate Council had equally refuted the allegations that the emir spent N6 billion of the emirate’s fund since assuming office in 2014. Speaking at a press conference in Kano on Monday, a senior official in charge of finance, Bashir Wali, told newsmen that contrary to reports, Sanusi has only spent N2.9billion since he emerged Emir three years ago. Mr. Wali, who is also the Walin Kano, further explained that Emir Sanusi inherited about N1.9 billion as against the alleged N4 billion from his predecessor Alhaji Ado Bayero. By Dennis Agbo ENUGU – Nigeria’s former Ambassador to the United States of America, USA, Professor George Obiozor, has asked the Federal Government to make haste by heeding the clamour for restructuring of the country to prevent eventual break up. Obiozor speaking at the “Big Ideas Podium,” at the African Heritage Institute, Enugu and moderated by former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, cautioned that political goodwill was needed to ensure decisive action which would guarantee the rights of all the citizens regardless of ethnic, regional or religious affiliation. Obiozor said: “It is clear that unless the leaders learn the lesson of history and act soon, the call for restructuring will be followed by calls for national referendum (on the way forward). “Indeed, the referendum option is already here with us and looms high as national and international agenda to settle the Nigeria national question. “And those who think they can stop it must take a second look at the present international system. All over, the world is rejecting unity without justice and peace without justice. “I know for instance that majority of Igbo prefer a united Nigeria but not unity of slaves and masters and also want peace but not peace of the grave yard. Nigeria is in Jeopardy but the problems are not insurmountable.” The Moderator, Prof Soludo said that the podium series was started to help transform the country. He said: “Ideas rule the world. Ideas constitute about 60 or 70 percent of the input needed to get any project done… “Nigeria is a project, it is work in progress. African continent is a project and only big ideas; ideas work. “It is through ideas that any nation, any continent has been built; any economy has been built, any political structure has been built and transformed. “Nigeria is at a cross road. We’ve been ranked one of the most fragile states in the world and there are nationalities’ questions. Nigeria as of today has never been more divided than any time in our history and so the search for the big ideas is to help in the transformation process that will really get Nigeria moving from point A to point B and also, leap forward and claim its rights in the comity of nations… “It is only big and transformative ideas that can do so. And so in this Big ideas podium of the African Heritage Institute, we are looking for the out of ordinary ideas, the missing links and the new thing that we need to put in place.” Others who spoke in similar vein included Secretary of Igbo Leaders of Though, Prof Elochukwu Amucheazi, former Minister of Finance, Kalu Idika Kalu and Director, Joint Universities Preliminary Examination Board, UNN, Prof Aloysius Okolie. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/05/majority-igbo-prefer-united-nigeria-says-george-obiozor/ Cc lalasticlala

By Mustapha Usman, Kano The Kano State House of Assembly will invite the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, to appear before its adhoc committee set to investigate him over allegations of misappropriation of the emirate council funds. The emir is currently facing probe by the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission over alleged misappropriation of Emirate Council funds to the tune of over N4billion. DAILY NIGERIAN gathered that the commission had invited top officials of the council for questioning, and may likely quiz the emir next week. In an interview with journalists in Kano, the vice chairman of the adhoc committee and member representing Kano Municipal, Baffa Dan’Agundi, said all those involved in the matter, including the emir will appear before the house for questioning. “All those involved in this issue will be invited to appear before this committee. “The emir is the chairman of the emirate council. He is the one who authorises expenditures. So His Highness the Emir will be invited for questioning,” Mr Dan’Agundi said. The legislator, however, did not mention the date the monarch will appear before the committee. Raising a matter of public importance at the Wednesday sitting, a member representing Nassarawa constituency, Ibrahim Gama, said it was imperative for the House to investigate the emir, following “various allegations from many quarters”. The legislator therefore raised eight-count charges of allegation/defamation of character, breach of oath of office/oath of allegiance, abuse of office privileges and protocol and political and religious interference. Other charges are “unguided (sic) utterances, misappropriation of public funds, misrepresentation at public gatherings and undue criticism of President Buhari/APC led government.” Mr Gama then prayed for the House to constitute an ad-hoc committee to investigate the allegations and also look at the law establishing the institution for possible ammendments. The speaker, Alhassan Rurum, therefore set up a 7-member committee to investigate the allegations, study the law establishing the traditional institution for possible amendment and report to the House within two weeks. https://dailynigerian.com/news/emir-sanusi-to-appear-before-kano-assembly-for-questioning/ Cc lalasticlala Mynd44

More than 1,000 people have died in an outbreak of meningitis in Nigeria, the Centre for Disease Control said Thursday, but added that the spread of the disease is slowing. The outbreak has mostly affected children in Africa’s most populous country. As of May 9, a total of 13,420 suspected cases had been reported in 23 states with 1,069 deaths, giving a fatality ratio of eight per cent, the CDC said in a statement. The northern states of Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina and Kebbi, which were the worst affected, have all seen a drop in the number of cases. Two others which were also badly hit — Kebbi and Niger — recorded no deaths, the CDC said. A new strain of meningitis C was first reported in Zamfara last November and spread to 22 other states in northern Nigeria. A mass vaccination programme was started to limit its spread. The CDC said a new batch of vaccines was expected to arrive in the next few days. Meningitis is caused by different types of bacteria, six of which can cause epidemics. It is transmitted between people through coughs and sneezes, close contact and cramped living conditions. The illness causes acute inflammation of the outer layers of the brain and spinal cord, with the most common symptoms being fever, headache and neck stiffness. Nigeria lies in the so-called “meningitis belt” of sub-Saharan Africa, stretching from Senegal in the west to Ethiopia in the east, where outbreaks of the disease are a regular occurrence. |
