Police in the UK have launched a murder investigation in southeast England after 39 people were found dead in a truck container at an Essex industrial park. One of the victims was a teenager. The precise location of the truck is the Waterglade Industrial Park in Grays. The horror was discovered at roughly 1.40am today. Authorities believe the truck, which originated in Bulgaria, entered the UK through the Welsh port of Holyhead over the weekend. A regular ferry service connects Holyhead with the Irish capital, Dublin. “We are in the process of identifying the victims, however I anticipate that this could be a lengthy process,” Chief Superintendent Andrew Mariner said in a statement. They have arrested a 25-year-old Northern Irish truck driver “on suspicion of murder” after finding the bodies early on Wednesday morning, Essex Police said. “We have arrested the lorry driver in connection with the incident who remains in police custody as our enquiries continue ” Mariner added. “This is a tragic incident where a large number of people have lost their lives. Our enquiries are ongoing to establish what has happened,” he said. Police have placed a cordon around the area and say they are working with the local council “to mitigate against any impact our investigation scene will have locally.” The UK Home Secretary, Priti Patel, said she was “shocked and saddened” by what she called the “utterly tragic incident,” according to her Twitter account. Jackie Doyle-Price, the Conservative MP for Thurrock, tweeted: ‘Sickening news of 39 people found dead in a container in Grays. ‘People trafficking is a vile and dangerous business. This is a big investigation for Essex Police. Let’s hope they bring these murderers to justice.’ https://www.akelicious.net/39-people-found-dead-inside-truck-container/

Forty-sixty-year-old Mrs Lilian Obiechina, popularly called ‘Ada Ide’, is a native of Ogidi in the Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State. Her looks expose the doggedness in her participation in the struggle for Biafra which she told our correspondent was strengthened by what she termed by the ill-treatment of Igbo in Nigeria. Obiechina said, “I was more of a Nigerian than an Igbo but as things keep happening, one keeps hearing news of what is going on and one watches one’s people being pushed to the wall. One then asks oneself ‘who am I?’ Are you more Nigerian than an indigenous person? I am Igbo.’’ “When you watch others, you see the northerners when they react or do their things; you see the Yoruba how they do their things and now you are sitting back watching your own people being pushed to the wall. You ask yourself, why are you not there? Why are you not where your people are? “Getting to that consciousness spurred me into getting involved in what is happening to me as an Igbo woman. As an Igbo person, that was what actually motivated me into the struggle.” She noted that if the Igbo got what they felt they deserved in Nigeria, there would be no need for struggle, adding “Why won’t we (Biafrans) govern ourselves – like other states that broke out of a larger country?’’ Obiechina, who adorned her hair with colourful beads, said there was nothing wrong for Biafrans to govern themselves within Nigeria. “Is anything wrong with Biafra being an autonomous state from Nigeria? Why can’t Nigeria move on and allow Biafra to move on or any other indigenous people that want to move forward? Why? “Must all of us be dragged together at Nigeria’s pace? How can somebody who has learnt how to crawl, walk and run wants to fly, and you that is crawling is holding the person down? Is that right? We want to govern ourselves; we, we want to man our place. We want to take charge of what is happening to us, whether we get it right or we don’t get it right, it doesn’t concern any other people.” She explained that they were not after other tribes’ domains, stating that even if they were in Nigeria, there was nothing wrong in Biafrans getting what was due to them. Strong for Biafra According to her, harassment by security agencies emboldens her to do more for the Biafra struggle. She said, “You actually grow a thick skin and you will even get to learn great strategies because you have met them this way you keep learning new strategies and improving. We are actually improving. The more they come, the harder they will fall because we keep improving and finding ways to engage whatever they throw at us.” She stated that anyone in a struggle would only withdraw if he/she wasn’t aware of the reasons for the struggle. “One can only chicken out in a struggle only if one doesn’t understand the reason for the struggle. It is when you don’t know why you are in a struggle that when you are slapped or your clothes thorn you will say you are no longer participating in it,’’ she added. https://www.akelicious.net/were-in-biafra-struggle-to-give-our-kids-better-future-ipob-women-agitators/

The leader of The Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in a video message announced the passing of his dear mother, he talked about her generosity, what led to her death and the best way to honour her. Read the transcript of IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu announcing the passing on of his mother, Ugoeze Sally Nnenne Okwu-Kanu: Fellow Biafrans, lovers of freedom all over the world. I bring you the particularly sad news on this very day about the passing of my mother, Ugoeze Sally Nnenne Okwu-Kanu who died on the 30th of August this year in Germany. Anybody who met my mother or had the unique privilege of making her acquaintance will testify to her generosity but above all, her devotion and love for Biafra. Not just for Biafra as a project but for all those who are within it. She saw IPOB as her family and did everything that she could to ensure that this very struggle is what it is today. And as we all know the events of the 14th of September 2017 contributed immensely to her ill-health which unfortunately the doctors were not able to do anything about. A mother as caring and compassionate as she is, watching and seeing how children being killed – twenty-eight (28) of them in total – and having to see their dead bodies traumatized her to the extent that she took ill of which she never recovered. https://www.akelicious.net/mazi-nnamdi-kanu-announce-the-death-of-his-mother-video-and-transcript/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qILONdC3-DU

The Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola SAN, has said that with the Federal Government’s commitment to renewal of infrastructure across the country, Nigeria would sing a new song soon in terms of ease of movement and doing business. Fashola, who made the declaration while playing host to a United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) delegation led by the Representative to ECOWAS and Regional Director, Nigeria Regional Hub, Mr. Jean Bakole, who paid a courtesy visit to him, said the massive renewal of the nation’s roads, bridges, rails, airports and seaports meant that “in the shortest possible Nigerians will sing a new song”. The Minister, who noted that work has already started in those areas across the country, pointed out that most of the infrastructure have already been upgraded while some roads have been either completed or nearing completion in most areas adding that in those sections where work has been completed, movement of goods and services have become easier as being testified to by commuters. According to the Minister, although some of the road projects are yet to start those already completed have brought with them better travel experience in terms of the ease of doing business adding that better experience in movement of goods and services would translate to industrial growth and development. He said the Government was also focusing on Science, Education as critical purveyors of development adding that already the seeds were being sown under the nation’s broad Educational policy and its Social Investment programme that empowers the youth to go and teach in those areas. Fashola said Government’s commitment to Agriculture was also yielding results in terms of increase in food production such as rice, cereal and others adding that although the price of food was still high, it was expected to come down significantly as supply increased. Assuring that all the projects would soon come to fruition to give Nigerians a better future, Fashola said in terms of building an industrial base in this country, President Muhammadu Buhari was very clear where his priorities lay adding that those were the priorities that formed the basis of his Campaign promises to the electorates. He listed the priorities to include tackling corruption which, he noted, “is inimical to prosperity, improving the economy to deliver prosperity and to improve security, the lack of which, he also noted, “is inimical to industrial development”. Also embedded in the promises, he said, is to develop and renew the country’s infrastructure “which is very important for business efficiency, growth and productivity”. Thanking the UNIDO delegation for the courtesy of the visit, Fashola said Nigeria has clearly embraced partnerships with the United Nations Organization and its affiliates adding that recent proof of such collaboration was demonstrated by the President’s personal attendance at the just concluded United Nations General Assembly as well as embracing other collaborative programmes of the world body. The Minister, however, advocated a reform in the United Nations rules and regulations pointing out that the existing rules and regulations have become obsolete and could no longer meet the present challenges. “Everybody knows that the UN has come a long way and many of its foundational rules and regulations and development programmes clearly need an upgrade”, the Minister said noting that the world is moving faster and changing much more rapidly. “The UN Charter for example needs reforms to bring them in conformity with today’s global challenges if it must continue to fulfill the obligations for which it was created”, he said. Responding to the introductory remarks of the leader of the delegation, Fashola expressed delight at the amount ($60million USD) which the UNIDO has mapped out for investment in about nine sectors in the country. He, however, advised that instead of spreading the amount on so many areas it would be more beneficial to invest it in two or three critical areas that would be more impactful to the needs of the people. “Sixty million USD is a huge amount of money. But it is not the money that is the issue but how it is being used. My thoughts are that instead of spreading this money thin over a large area, as you said, why not use it on one or two projects that could be impactful to the people”, he said suggesting that the money could be invested in a massive industrial complex “that becomes an example in Africa”. Earlier in his remarks, the leaders of the delegation and Representative to ECOWAS and Regional Director, Nigeria Regional Hub, Mr. Jean Bakole, had informed the Minister that UNIDO planned to invest about $60 Million in Nigeria in nine critical areas including Agriculture and Agro-based businesses, Trade and Capacity Building, Housing and Construction, Infrastructure Development, Energy and the Environment, among others. Also present at the occasion were the Minister of State, Engr. Abubakar Aliyu, the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Mohammed Bukar, Directors, Special Advisers and other top Ministry Official while the ECOWAS Representative was accompanied by top officials of UNIDO. https://www.akelicious.net/nigerians-will-soon-rejoice-fashola/

The re-election campaign of Gov. Yahaya Bello of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kogi state, got a big boost today with his endorsement by 45 political parties, The Chairman of the coalition, Mr Sani Teidi, who announced this at a press conference in Wednesday in Lokoja, said that the parties decided to adopt Bello to boost his re-election bid. Twelve of the parties in the coalition are fielding candidates in the election, while 15 others have no candidates. The coalition also included 18 political parties that had earlier voluntarily withdrawn from the election to brighten the chances of Bello in the election. The parties with candidates include Accord Party, Alliance for Democracy, Green Party of Nigeria, Peoples Party of Nigeria, National Conscience Party, Young Democratic Party and Justice Must Prevail Party. Others are Zenith Labour Party, Peoples Progressives Party, Hope Democratic Party, Africa Action Alliance and Peoples Redemption Party. Teidi, the governorship candidate of the Young Democratic Party, said that Bello did well during his first tenure and as such, deserved a second term to complete the ‘good work’ he had started. “In addition to effective governance which Bello has provided Kogi State going by various indices of development, he has done the most in our state’s history to eliminate ethnic, religious and class differences among our people,” Teidi said. He said that the ethnic colouration being given to campaigns by other candidates was a disincentive to voters in the state. Teidi further appealed to other candidates to respect the rule of law and play according to the rules before, during and after the election. He enjoined Bello to see his endorsement as a call to provide more transformational leadership for the people and not as a victory over opposition. The chairman of the coalition also called on voters to turn out en masse on Nov. 16 to vote for Bello. In his reaction, the deputy governorship candidate of APC in the forthcoming election, Mr Edward Onoja, said that the decision of the parties would further promote unity, progress and development of the state. He commended them for shelving their individual interests for the collective interest of the state, saying that Bello would work to unite the people, irrespective of their ethnic and religious affiliations. Onoja expressed the appreciation of the APC leadership to the parties, urging them to help in selling the party to their supporters at the grassroots. https://www.akelicious.net/kogi-guber-accord-party-ad-prp-42-others-endorse-bello/

Amnesty International (AI) has identified 119 Nigerians among a total of 1,281 persons sentenced to death in Malaysia. AI gave the figure in its report titled, “Fatally flawed: Why Malaysia must abolish the death penalty.” It said the 1,281 death row inmates were being kept in 26 detention facilities across Malaysia. In Malaysia, 33 offences are punished with a death sentence. The AI report said the 119 Nigerians were convicted of hard drug-related offences. “As of 22 February 2019, 1,281 people were under sentence of death in Malaysia, held in 26 detention facilities across the country. A startling 44 per cent (568) of all those under sentence of death were foreign nationals, from 43 countries. “Nationals from Nigeria made up 21 per cent of this group, with those from Indonesia (16 per cent), Iran (15 per cent), India (10 per cent), Philippines (eight per cent) and Thailand (six per cent) following suit. “A significant 73 per cent of all those under sentence of death have been convicted of drug trafficking under Section 39(b) of the Dangerous of Drugs Act, 1952 — an extremely high figure for an offence that does not even meet the threshold of the ‘most serious crimes’ under international law and standards and for which the death penalty must not be imposed,” AI said in the report. In its report, Amnesty documented many violations of international human rights law and standards associated with the use of the death penalty in Malaysia. “Our research found a pattern of unfair trials and secretive hangings that itself spoke volumes. From allegations of torture and other ill-treatment to an opaque pardons process, it’s clear the death penalty is a stain on Malaysia’s criminal justice system,” said Shamini Darshni Kaliemuthu, Executive Director of Amnesty International Malaysia. In July 2018, the Malaysian government established a moratorium on executions, a temporary prohibition that means the convicts won’t have their sentences carried out. Even though the government previously committed to full abolition of the death penalty, it is expected to soon table legislation in the Malaysian Parliament that’ll remove the mandatory death penalty for only 11 offences. Amnesty called on the government to completely abolish the death penalty for all crimes and review all cases where people have been sentenced to death, with a view to commuting the sentences. https://punchng.com/119-nigerians-on-death-row-in-malaysia-ai/

Chief Robert Clarke says President Muhammadu Buhari is handicapped by the nature of government he is leading. The Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) who was a guest on Channels Television’s Sunday politics, says the government of today in Nigeria operating “the 1999 constitution that allows corruption to rear its head in every field of endeavor cannot be fighting corruption cannot be fighting corruption. According to Chief Clarke President Buhari is handicapped because the same system in which he operates is the one creating the corruption. “You have a government that is fighting corruption whereas the system you are operating to fight the corruption is also breading the corruption. The system allows corruption to thrive,” Chief Clarke said. He was of the opinion that the corruption cannot be eradicated because it emanates from the system. Speaking about possible solutions to the corruption problem, Chief Clarke was of the opinion that since the constitution is the canker-worm breeding corruption in Nigeria, then it must be done away with. “The constitution we are operating upon is a corrupt one… Let us change the constitution and restructure,” Chief Clarke noted. https://www.akelicious.net/buhari-is-handicapped-by-the-nature-of-administration-he-is-leading-clarke/

…says Bayelsans will not swap PDP for APC A former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Bayelsa State, Anthony George-Ikoli on Friday said he would not quit the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). ‘’I have been in PDP since 1999 and this is the second time I am contesting elections under our party’s flag. If I didn’t leave the party then, I don’t think it would be prudent to do so now. I detest the politics of convenience and cross carpeting although it would seem there are more than enough cogent reasons for many of us to have left but there is still an argument for many of us who choose to stay and help with the rebuilding of the party. I personally believe in man’s innate ability to reform and reinvent himself and as such the need to rebuild through service is uppermost in my mind. I may not have succeeded in my bid to become governor but I don’t believe that should rob me of my desire to deliver service to my nation.’’ The Senior Advocate of Nigeria described politics as a service. ‘’I did rather stay and weather the storm in my party than to jump ship just for the sake of jumping ship. After all, who says there are no issues in other parties as well? Aspirants within the APC are equally in court seeking judicial intervention in their own primaries at well. Ultimately, are we here to serve ourselves or are we here to serve the generality of our people? If we are here to serve the generality, does jumping ship serve that purpose? These are the real questions one must answer in the arduous process of decision making.’’ George-Ikoli, an aspirant in the recently concluded governorship primary in Bayelsa State believes that history is on the side of the PDP and that the people are not in a hurry to swap PDP for an uncertain opposition party. ‘’The PDP is a party the people of the South-South and Bayelsa in general have a natural historical affinity for, given the inclusiveness of its politics and the nationalistic outlook of the party and the emotional investment they have in the party. Despite the seeming growing influence of the APC in Bayelsa State, I don’t think the people are in a hurry to swap our party for an uncertain opposition party. In 2015, we swapped certainty for uncertainty at the centre and it is clear as day what the results of that experiment have been.’’ The member of the PDP National Campaign Councils for Bayelsa and Kogi States spoke to newsmen in Abuja. ‘’I believe there was a sense of exclusionism within the party from the onset of the entire process as it seemed only a select group within the party had the anointing of the establishment to contest. This I believe had the unintended consequences of degenerating into an ‘’us versus them’’ contest depending on which side of the divide one stood.’’ He argued that the governorship primary caused harm to the party in the state. ‘’The governor as any normal politician cannot be begrudged. He has his rights to participation and to have a favorite in the race. Although it was important to get his buy-in in some shape or form as the incumbent, winning his heart was not really on the cards especially if his heart was set on another. What was more important was ensuring that a process that was fair and credible was undertaken and the party would still remain together, stronger into the elections. The seeming exclusionist environment didn’t support this.’’ The legal luminary called for fence-mending and reworking of the party. ‘’I would be lying to myself if I say the primaries were perfect and everything went according to the spirit and letter of our party’s constitution. A clear indication of this is the fact that court actions have been instituted against the process and not a few people came away feeling aggrieved at the way some things were handled. Is this a setback for the party? Only time will tell. There is sufficient need for fence-mending and reworking of the party.’’ He proposed an aggressive strategy to assuage frayed nerves. ‘’Let’s face it. The primaries were not perfect and there is still a lot the party has to do to reconcile frayed nerves. If asking that things be done properly is rocking the boat, then count me amongst those rocking the boat.. Every boat rocking must have intended positive end and for me, that is strengthening the internal processes of the party. He also educated the Bayelsan public on how to develop the state. ‘’There is so much to do in Bayelsa. We are so far behind. It is not even funny. One major thing that scares me is the fact that most of the young people in Bayelsa hardly ever have the appellation engineer, doctor or lawyer. Instead, what you hear is politician or youth leader or ex this or ex that. It is dangerous that the state is populated predominantly by politicians. People like us who have thriving careers outside of politics must shout it to the rooftops that there are too many politicians and too few in the real sector. We must build that real sector and quickly too. We must get our youth to think of another way of doing things. We must get them into production, teach them value creation and how to better their lives before it is too late. The lure of taking politics as a means of livelihood should be discouraged and politics as a means to service uplifted.’’ https://www.akelicious.net/i-ll-never-dump-pdp-says-george-ikoli/

The Appeal Court had on Friday upheld the election of the National Assembly Kogi Election Tribunal which nullified the election of Melaye and ordered a re-run. Adeyemi had vowed to defeat Melaye in the re-run election to be conducted by INEC soon. In his reaction, Melaye said Adeyemi is his political wife and that he would defeat him again. He said he had defeated Adeyemi on two previous occasion and that he would score a hat-trick this time around. “Smart Adeyemi is my political wife, I was in APC, I contested against him in PDP, I defeated him. I came to PDP and he went to APC, I defeated him, that is two zero and going back for the third time, it will be hat-trick. I will score the third goal,” Melaye wrote on his Instagram page. Melaye had earlier, while reacting to the judgment on his Facebook page told his followers: “Let your hearts not be troubled, believe in God believe also His prophets. Court judgement is human judgment, I believe in divine I mean God’s judgment. “It is absolutely well. No worries, no tension, no pains. I celebrate God for he is always a good God. At the end His name will be glorified. He is not a man that He will lie. I’m a winner every time. There is a final verdict and it is the verdict of God. Peace, peace, peace. “Today, I speak over my life and my household that the peace of God that surpasses understanding will garrison across our hearts. I am not shaken nor moved. I trust in God completely. I lean not on my own understanding; I acknowledge Him in all my ways, and I am directed of the Lord and led by the Spirit. I see my way through; I walk a path devoid of pitfalls. I look to the Lord my God, and I will not see shame. “I am delivered from destruction and dereliction. I am saved to serve and strengthened for life. God is merciful to me, and I have received grace of the Lord my God. I have favour. Nothing is against me. Men are favourably disposed to me in every situation. I am accepted and not rejected. Nothing blocks my path to success; I am not a failure, and greatness is attracted to me. I activate the will of the Father and insist that today is the day of His power. I am willing; God is at work, in me, to will and to do all His good pleasure. I win always. “My prayers are answered, and my requests are granted. “My eye is single, and my body is full of light”. Sorrows and tears are far from me. I have peace; my struggles cease; my frustrations, fears, and frailties give way; and I am strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. My tomorrow is greater and better than my yesterday. I shine like the star that I am. I am blessed with every blessing heavenly, in heavenly places in Christ Jesus. I am blessed with the blessing of the sand and stars. I increase on all sides. In Jesus’s name, I believe and say amen.” https://www.akelicious.net/smart-adeyemi-is-my-political-wife-ill-defeat-him-again-dino-melaye/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sG2lbw8loOs

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday in Abuja met behind closed doors with members of the recently constituted Economic Advisory Council (EAC). The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the EAC, which was constituted on Sept. 16, replaced the Economic Management Team (EMT), headed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. The functions of EAC, chaired by Prof. Doyin Salami, include fiscal analysis, economic growth and a range of internal and global economic issues working with the relevant cabinet members and heads of monetary and fiscal agencies. “The EAC will have monthly technical sessions as well as scheduled quarterly meetings with the President. “The Chairman may, however, request for unscheduled meetings if the need arises,” an earlier statement by presidential aide, Femi Adesina said. https://www.akelicious.net/buhari-meets-members-of-economic-advisory-council/

Kanu stated this yesterday on his handle @MaziNnamdiKanu on micro-blogging site, Twitter. The IPOB leader noted that all countries that were once said to be indivisible have all finally been splitted. He recalled the case of the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, the Roman and British empires. Kanu opined that if those countries could all divide, Nigerian also can. “All countries, like Nigeria, that were said to be INDIVISIBLE have all DISINTEGRATED. This includes the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, etc. Even Roman & British empires were once touted as not only indivisible but PERMANENT. Nigeria is DIVISIBLE. Biafra shall come,” he tweeted. https://www.akelicious.net/why-nigeria-is-divisible-nnamdi-kanu/

Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu, has said that those clamouring for Igbo Presidency in 2023 are wasting their time. Kanu said this in a live broadcast on Radio Biafra, monitored by Akelicious, on Monday, October 7th, 2019. Akelicious recalls that several Igbo groups including the Ohanaeze Youth Council, OYC, had called on other ethnic groups in Nigeria to support the Igbo presidency project, saying that it would end the agitation for a sovereign state of Biafra. Speaking in his latest broadcast, Kanu stated that “the idea that the Igbo presidency will end the agitation for Biafra is nonsense.” He said that presidency coming to the Southeast will not make the lives of those living in the region any better, arguing that the North has the presidency but still has beggars, banditry and camps for Internally Displaced Persons, IDP. “Having the presidency will not make your life better, the North has the presidency but has beggers, banditry, and IDP camps,” Kanu said. The IPOB leader further said, “Igbo presidency is a dream, it’s like second Niger bridge and Ogoni cleanup.” https://www.akelicious.net/igbo-presidency-waste-of-time-wont-end-biafra-agitation-nnamdi-kanu/
