There are several myths about the last four months of the year popularly called ‘Ember’ months. Many believe that September to December are the most dangerous months of the year. The last four months are the farmers harvest season and a time when a lot of festivities take place. Marriages, burial ceremonies, chieftaincy celebrations, housewarming and many other festivals are often fixed for the last four months of the year because it is assumed that the rains would have subsided. Many corporate organisations also grant annual leave to their staff as well as close for the year by mid-December to enable their workers to observe the Christmas and New Year celebrations. Thus, it is a period of holidaying. Because of the hike in the number of festivities observed during the ‘ember’ months, a lot of traveling takes place thus the roads are busier in this period than any other time of the year. Aside from travelling, a lot of people are also under intense financial pressure having to pay school fees and attend to several invitations or contribute to different ceremonies. It is customary in Yorubaland, even in Igboland, to buy ‘Aso Ebi’ and also give gifts to people. Many also want to show off their progress for the year, particularly if they will be travelling to their homestead or birthplace. Hence, they go shopping for new cloths, bags, shoes, cars, etc. The intense financial pressure can and do cause high blood pressure for many which can lead to sudden death, heart attack or stroke. these are my own deductions. share your funny myths here. |
MissMeiya;Happy now?.....clap for yourself. pls. |

Peace! |
@ Seun, pls define what you mean by derailing according to ur almighty rules....this is becoming neccessary coz itz obvious you are tolerating all those athiests and like minds who wont stop at anything but derail, post insulting comments, abuse posters sensitivity in almost any Christian related topics. It doesn't concern me if you yourself is an athiest, pls.. all i'm saying is that, if you are applying those ur rules/laws in other sections, you must apply it in religious section too....to tell you the truth, itz in religious section that you need more monitoring and enforcing of those rules. I've never insulted anybody for been an athiest, a JW, a muslim or a herbalist and i respect individuals choice and hence wont poke my nose into any thread created by any let alone posting/commenting offensively and i do seriously expect same from all other religious mind. Kenya’s effort to shield its citizens against the deadly Ebola epidemic took a new turn Wednesday after a businessman accused the US government of owning the virus that has killed more than 1,000 people in West Africa and caused havoc in the aviation industry. The sensational claim was made in suit papers supporting businessman Joseph Enock Aura’s quest to have the Kenya High Court throw out a case filed by the Consumers Federation of Kenya (Cofek) lobby group seeking to compel national carrier Kenya Airways to stop flying to West African nations hit by the Ebola epidemic. Mr Aura told the court that the United States government had patented the Ebola virus, its vaccine and cure in October 2012 and should be compelled to bring the health crisis to a stop instead of targeting the national carrier. “Ebola is patented under the United States patent number WO 2010048615 A2 as confirmed by the US patent office and in the same document is an explanation of a cure and vaccine for Ebobun Ebola,” said Harrison Kinyanjui, a lawyer representing Mr Aura. The World Health Organisation has, however, maintained that there is no licensed cure for the deadly viral disease. Mr Aura has attached to his suit papers documents showing that the US government tasked Jonathan Towner, Stuart Nichol, James Comer, and Thomas Ksalzek Peirre Rollin, all from the state of Georgia, with the job of developing a strain of the virus, a vaccine and a cure for it. The document further states that the intention of the assignment was to find a scientific method for “detection and treatment of Ebobun infection”. 'Notoriety' Mr Aura made the claim as Nigeria, one of the affected West African countries, declined to use an experimental drug from the United States. Nigeria’s Health minister Onyebuchi Chukwu said the drug had failed to meet safety and ethical requirements. The drug Nano Silver was developed by Natural Solutions Foundation, an American company that claims it is capable of curing not only Ebola, but also other communicable diseases. High Court judge Isaac Lenaola told Mr Aura to serve Cofek, Kenya Airways, the Attorney-General and the cabinet secretaries for the Transport, Health and Interior ministries with his application before close of business Wednesday. Mr Aura argues that the matter would not have gone before the court had it been put to the public for discussion and determination. “The story generated by these proceedings has gained notoriety around the globe as an appendage of the information about ‘Ebola’. The impression generated is that the Kenyan consumer is actively backing these proceedings, which is certainly not the case,” the businessman said. The outbreak of Ebola, a deadly haemorrhagic fever that has so far claimed more than 1200 lives in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, has left the world with a global health crisis that has paralysed businesses worth billions of shillings worldwide. The served parties have until Monday to respond to the application before hearing begins on Tuesday. Commercial interests vs public safety The matter comes days after the Kenyan national carrier was forced to refund hundreds of passengers money it had collected from ticket sales following suspension of flights to Liberia and Sierra Leone on Tuesday. READ: West Africa flight ban leaves Kenya Airways in a fix Mr Aura has applied to join a case in which Cofek wants Kenya Airways compelled to stop flying to West Africa until the Ebola crisis in contained. Cofek on Monday told the court that by continuing to fly to Ebola-infested West Africa, the national carrier had put commercial interests before public safety. It is also seeking a determination as to whether the decision to continue flying to the affected countries should be left entirely to the airline. Mr Aura has faulted the lobby’s application to have Kenya Airways stopped from flying to affected countries, arguing that it is discriminatory as infected people can still enter Kenya even if the flights are suspended. “The measures targeted at Kenya Airways are clearly discriminatory and of a negative economic impact because they cannot prevent the spread of Ebola via public transportation. Infected persons can travel by road from any West African country to any other part of Africa and thereafter take a flight other than Kenya Airways to Kenya,” Mr Aura says in his suit papers. We have lost a great ans true leader, great Nigerian, greatest woman in this generation. In her lifetime, por. Dora Akuyili was such a cheerful and invigorating presence, very passionate about the success of Nigeria. Nairalanders, drop you tributes here and let us celebrate her as she will be committed to mother earth today. Biography Prof. Dora Nkem Akunyili (OFR) was born in Makurdi, Benue State (Nigeria) on the 14th of July 1954 to Chief & Mrs Paul Young Edemobi. She is a devout Catholic and is happily married to Dr. J.C. Akunyili, a Medical Practitioner and they are blessed with six children and three grandchildren. Her hobbies include reading, writing, cooking and travelling. She speaks Igbo and English fluently. Prof. Akunyili, is an internationally renowned Pharmacist, Pharmacologist, Erudite Scholar, Seasoned Administrator, and a visionary leader. She has served her country in numerous strategic positions including as Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and Federal Minister of Information and Communication. EDUCATIONAL CAREER Prof. Akunyili’s educational career started with her passing the First School Leaving Certificate with Distinction in 1966, and the West African School Certificate (W.A.S.C.) with Grade I Distinction in 1973 (both in Nigeria), which earned her the Eastern Nigerian Government Post Primary Scholarship and the Federal Government of Nigeria Undergraduate Scholarship respectively. It is remarkable that throughout her high school career, Dora Akunyili was always top of her class - a record that has never been broken in the school to date. She got her B.Pharm (Hons) in 1978 and PhD in 1985, both at the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN). Prof. Akunyili won the best student award in the school of Pharmacy in her very first year in the school and the Vice Chancellor’s Postgraduate and Research Leadership prize in Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences for 1984/85 and 1985/86 academic Sessions. She was promoted to the rank of Professor of Pharmacology in October, 2000 by the same University. WORKING / EMPLOYMENTS EXPERIENCES Prof. Akunyili started her working career as a Hospital Pharmacist in the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) Enugu in 1978. In 1981, she ventured into Academics as a Graduate Assistant (Research Fellow) in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, UNN. In the University system, she made a steady progress from lecturer I in 1986 until she was made Senior Lecturer in 1990. In 1992 she transferred to the College of Medicine, UNN and became a Consultant Pharmacologist in 1996. She also worked as a part time lecturer at the West African College of Pharmacists, Lagos, Nigeria from 1992-1995. She was appointed Supervisory Councilor for Agriculture in Anaocha Local Government of Anambra State, Nigeria from 1994 – 1996. Prof. Dora Akunyili was appointed Zonal Secretary of Petroleum Special Trust Fund (PTF), where she coordinated all projects in the five South Eastern States of Nigeria from 1997 - 2000. Prof. Dora Akunyili was appointed Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Nigeria from April 2001-2008. Here she recorded outstanding success. Prior to her appointment, food and drug regulation in Nigeria was chaotic. All manner of adulterated, fake and substandard food and drugs were dumped into Nigeria resulting in over 60 percent of fake drugs in circulation. Unscrupulous individuals made fortunes from such unwholesome practices. When she assumed office, she brought in a new culture of excellence and honesty to NAFDAC and the entire Nigerian public service. As a result, the level of fake and counterfeit drugs in circulation dropped to 16.7 percent with vast improvement in the food and other regulated sectors. As a commentator in a national newspaper once wrote, “The NAFDAC Director General is a revolutionary. She has not only changed NAFDAC, she has also changed the pharmaceutical industry in the country.” From December 2008 – December 2010, she worked as the Honourable Minister of Information and Communications, Federal Republic of Nigeria. As the Honourable Minister, Prof. Akunyili anchored the Re-branding Nigeria Project driven by the slogan, Nigeria Good People, Great Nation. The programme was conceived as an internal process to address Nigeria’s negative image both at home and abroad. Dora has proved her versatility in all areas of human endeavour as she also ventured into politics when she aspired to serve her own people in Anambra State as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. As a Scientist and a Scholar, she has presented over 600 papers delivered in various Local and International Conferences, published 4 books and written scientific articles published in 37 local and international journals. She also supervised PhD and Masters candidates. Though God is infinitely far above our ability to fully understand, He tells us through the Scriptures very specific truths about Himself so that we can know what He is like, and be drawn to worship Him. The following is a list of 30 names and attributes of God. Use this guide to enrich your time set apart with God by meditating on them along with the accompanying passage. Worship God, focusing on Him and His character. Share your own or tell us which one you love most. God is Jehovah. The name of the independent, self-complete being—“I AM WHO I AM”—only belongs to Jehovah God. Our proper response to Him is to fall down in fear and awe of the One who possesses all authority. —Exodus 3:13-15 God is Jehovah-M’Kaddesh. This name means “the God who sanctifies.” A God separate from all that is evil requires that the people who follow Him be cleansed from all evil. —Leviticus 20:7,8 God is infinite. God is beyond measurement—we cannot define Him by size or amount. He has no beginning, no end, and no limits. —Romans 11:33 God is omnipotent. This means God is all-powerful. He spoke all things into being, and all things—every cell, every breath, every thought—are sustained by Him. There is nothing too difficult for Him to do. —Jeremiah 32:17,18, 26,27 God is good. God is the embodiment of perfect goodness, and is kind, benevolent, and full of good will toward all creation. —Psalm 119:65-72 God is love. God’s love is so great that He gave His only Son to bring us into fellowship with Him. God’s love not only encompasses the world, but embraces each of us personally and intimately. —1 John 4:7-10 God is Jehovah-jireh. This name means “the God who provides.” Just as He provided yesterday, He will also provide today and tomorrow. He grants deliverance from sin, the oil of joy for the ashes of sorrow, and eternal citizenship in His Kingdom for all those adopted into His household. —Genesis 22:9-14 God is Jehovah-shalom. This name means “the God of peace.” We are meant to know the fullness of God’s perfect peace, or His “shalom.” God’s peace surpasses understanding and sustains us even through difficult times. It is the product of fully being what we were created to be. —Judges 6:16-24 God is immutable. All that God is, He has always been. All that He has been and is, He will ever be. He is ever perfect and unchanging. —Psalm 102:25-28 God is transcendent. We must not think of God as simply the highest in an order of beings. This would be to grant Him eminence But he is more than eminent. He is transcendent—existing beyond and above the created universe. —Psalm 113:4,5 God is just. God is righteous and holy, fair and equitable in all things. We can trust Him to always do what is right. —Psalm 75:1-7 God is holy. God’s holiness is not simply a better version of the best we know. God is utterly and supremely untainted. His holiness stands apart—unique and incomprehensible. —Revelation 4:8-11 God is Jehovah-rophe. This name means “Jehovah heals.” God alone provides the remedy for mankind’s brokenness through His son, Jesus Christ. The Gospel is the physical, moral, and spiritual remedy for all people. —Exodus 15:22-26 God is self-sufficient. All things are God’s to give, and all that is given is given by Him. He can receive nothing that He has not already given us. —Acts 17:24-28 God is omniscient. This means God is all-knowing. God’s knowledge encompasses every possible thing that exists, has ever existed, or will ever exist. Nothing is a mystery to Him. —Psalm 139:1-6 God is omnipresent. God is everywhere—in and around everything, close to everyone. “‘Do not I fill heaven and earth?’ declares the Lord.” —Psalm 139:7-12 God is merciful. God’s merciful compassion is infinite and inexhaustible. Through His provision in Christ, He took the judgment that was rightfully ours and placed it on His own shoulders. He waits and works now for all people to turn to Him and to live under His justification. —Deuteronomy 4:29-31 God is sovereign. God presides over every event, great or small, and He is in control of our lives. To be sovereign, He must be all-knowing and all-powerful, and by His sovereignty He rules His entire creation. —1 Chronicles 29:11-13 God is Jehovah-nissi. This name means “God our banner.” Under His banner we go from triumph to triumph and say, “Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 15:57). —Exodus 17:8-15 God is wise. All God’s acts are accomplished through His infinite wisdom. He always acts for our good, which is to conform us to Christ. Our good and His glory are inextricably bound together. —Proverbs 3:19,20 God is faithful. Out of His faithfulness God honors His covenants and fulfills His promises. Our hope for the future rests upon God’s faithfulness. —Psalm 89:1-8 God is wrathful. Unlike human anger, God’s wrath is never capricious, self-indulgent, or irritable. It is the right and necessary reaction to objective moral evil. — Nahum 1:2-8 God is full of grace. Grace is God’s good pleasure that moves Him to grant merit where it is undeserved and to forgive debt that cannot be repaid. —Ephesians 1:5-8 God is our Comforter. Jesus called the Holy Spirit the “Comforter,” and the apostle Paul writes that the Lord is “the God of all comfort.” —2 Corinthians 1:3,4 God is El-Shaddai. This name means “God Almighty,”the God who is all-sufficient and all-bountiful, the source of all blessings. —Genesis 49:22-26 God is Father. Jesus taught us to pray, “Our Father” (Matthew 6:9), and the Spirit of God taught us to cry, “Abba, Father.,” an intimate Aramaic term similar to “Daddy.” The Creator of the universe cares for each one of us as if we were the only child He had. —Romans 8:15-17 God is the Church’s head. God the Son, Jesus, is the head of the Church. As the head, the part of the body that sees, hears, thinks, and decides, He gives the orders that the rest of the body lives by. —Ephesians 1:22,23 God is our intercessor. Knowing our temptations, God the Son intercedes for us. He opens the doors for us to boldly ask God the Father for mercy. Thus, God is both the initiation and conclusion of true prayer. —Hebrews 4:14-16 God is Adonai. This name means “Master” or “Lord.” God, our Adonai, calls all God’s people to acknowledge themselves as His servants, claiming His right to reign as Lord of our lives. —2 Samuel 7:18-20 God is Elohim. This name means “Strength” or “Power.” He is transcendent, mighty and strong. Elohim is the great name of God, displaying His supreme power, sovereignty, and faithfulness in His covenant relationship with us. —Genesis 17:7,8 Source; http://www.navigators.org/Tools/Discipleship%20Resources/Tools/30%20Days%20of%20Praying%20the%20Names%20and%20Attributes%20of%20God |
