thoth: This is really horseshit. I don't know how they made you to believe such insensible things, maybe you are caught with the glamor that you fail to see the real USA, In USA MONOPOLY RULES, what you hear everyday is congress passing some laws to give some corporation more powers to exploit the people, you see mergers almost every week, in fact it is even strange hearing somebody say this. Do you even know that almost all the news media in North America is owned by less than 4 people and these are thousands of small companies that most of the time has been violently acquired.I believe in examples. Give me one single private corporation in USA that is a monopoly. |
Mgbadike80: the west advanced faster at a time when communal ties were more bounding and their development have stalled since they went individualistic.be it an english puritan or italian catholic communality, they have strong social values that are violently defended. Let me ask you a question, would you buy an argument that says "Nigeria should regalise homosexualism and same sex marriage because it has no business deciding what should go on between two consenting adults in their bedroom" if your brainwashed enough to believe this crappy argument then you case is really serious.I think you are confusing a lot of things. I don't know which west you believe has stalled. Or what you call strong social values violently defended. Can you give an example? Talking about homosexuality, the government has no business deciding what I do with my body. Legalising marriage is another discussion because it is a civil or religious affair. At a time in South Africa, Blacks couldn't marry whites. I some countries, Christians couldn't marry muslims. etc. A society decides that but also suffers its consequences. |
Onlytruth: Nwanne I think you misunderstand some of my points. I am NOT a protectionist -far from that. I am not a pro-censorship. Not at all. This is why the USA remains above the so called "smart" nations. Individual freedom and competition. Do you know that in US, you must create competition for yourself if nobody else is competing with you? People need to start trusting in themselves and the human capacity to advance instead of limiting ourselves through some misguided "smartness". |

"ALL MY TEACHINGS ARE EASILY APPLICABLE TO ALL TIMES AND ALL CONDITIONS." - SATAN |
2 Samuel 6:6-7 When they came to the threshing floor of Nodan, Uzzah reached out his hand to the ark of God to steady it, for the oxen were making it tip. But the Lord was angry with Uzzah; God struck him on that spot, and he died there before God. |
thoth: As you rightly observed the former governments was active in protecting the fabric of the society from these assaults but it is sad that we no longer has those kind of governments now.The west is advancing faster than other because the west understood one thing: if your culture is drawing you back, abandon it. Even the Chinese you mentioned are currently abandoning their culture and copying the westerners. Community living should not infringe on individual liberties. If China thinks it's doing its country a big service by blocking foreign media, it's got another think coming. Those that really want to watch CNN will watch it. Others just travel outside and see the same thing. Censorship never works and unless your culture evolves and adapts, it is doomed. |
Onlytruth, our Eze. I ga adi. What you said is as clear as the morning and I believe you mentioned Nigeria because of the nature of this forum. The people you are actually speaking to are your people, the Igbos, but as we are currently yoked with other nations, we have to pretend to cater for their welfare as well. Don't mind the western efulefus here talking through their backside as usual. Although your write-up was filled with good intentions, I believe it is the wrong approach to what we acknowledge is a big problem that would get worse. I don't believe in protectionism and censorship. They may have worked for some countries last century when the world was not as open as it is today. Take the example you mentioned about "Desperate Housewives", I don't agree with you that the woman should be prevented from watching it if she wants to. Even if she doesn't understand it, who are we to decide what people should watch. I would rather we compete with "Hollywood", and produce series that our Nigerian housewives would love and appreciate. It is competition that will make us better, not banning foreign products. I will say one controversial thing here. We deliberately make things bad for us due to greed and illiteracy. Take Abakaliki rice for example. In it's purest form, it is better than any foreign counterpart but the producers deliberately add chaff and stones to the finished product in order to increase the weight and volume. So we end up with cheap mediocre rice instead of quality we can be proud of. Competition forced the producers to reduce this practice but the name is already tainted. My point is this: without govt. protectionism and censorship, our people will still patronise our local producers if they maintain top quality; and the only way to maintain top quality is by allowing competition. |
Another yahweh injunction you won't hear in sunday school: Kill brides on their wedding day! Deuteronomy 22:13-21 13 If a man takes a wife and, after sleeping with her, dislikes her 14 and slanders her and gives her a bad name, saying, “I married this woman, but when I approached her, I did not find proof of her virginity,” 15 then the young woman’s father and mother shall bring to the town elders at the gate proof that she was a virgin. 16 Her father will say to the elders, “I gave my daughter in marriage to this man, but he dislikes her. 17 Now he has slandered her and said, ‘I did not find your daughter to be a virgin.’ But here is the proof of my daughter’s virginity.” Then her parents shall display the cloth before the elders of the town, 18 and the elders shall take the man and punish him. 19 They shall fine him a hundred shekels[a] of silver and give them to the young woman’s father, because this man has given an Israelite virgin a bad name. She shall continue to be his wife; he must not divorce her as long as he lives. 20 If, however, the charge is true and no proof of the young woman’s virginity can be found, 21 she shall be brought to the door of her father’s house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. She has done an outrageous thing in Israel by being promiscuous while still in her father’s house. You must purge the evil from among you. |

Deuteronomy 13:15-16 15 you must certainly put to the sword all who live in that town. You must destroy it completely, both its people and its livestock. 16 You are to gather all the plunder of the town into the middle of the public square and completely burn the town and all its plunder as a whole burnt offering to the Lord your God. That town is to remain a ruin forever, never to be rebuilt, |
