asorocker: sometimes one wonders at the way Nigerian leaders think, at a time they operated only 1 gateway into Nigeria that is the MMA and later 2 gateways NAA and MMA , eastern tourist , travellers and pilgrims will drive all the way from the East to Abuja and lagos to board a flight to major destinations the same went for the sea ports, one wonders at the selfish wisdom of operating 1 deep sea port for more than 51 years of the nations existence , calabar port is not a deep sea port and the port harcourt sea port was never really developed into a deep sea port and a RORO port just to suit the narrow interests of a few selfish lots.
All this reminds me of how the north rather than develop it self , expended all its energies marginalising the east whom the believed they defeated in a war , 40 years after the north is in a deep mess in every sphere of human development and the people they held down have surpassed them . Oh shut up. North is the problem again. Or is it the north that brought out the fake picture Or maybe the GEJ is a northerner |

mbatuku1: The only place that would have been great if Nigeria made the mistake of having Awo as president is nowhere but Yorubaland.
Awo was too bigoted to rule in a multi-ethnic society like Nigeria without favouring his own people, even if it led to the detriment of others. what did he do that suggested he would do such ? |

afam4eva: What do you now say about states like Delta, Rivers and Cross river. Do the indigenes of each state act alike? You also add Plateau, Kwara, Benue and Kogi All those state have experienced one form of conflict or have some certain group marginalized while the Majority and Minority have one form of hate harbouring in there heart. Thus they have actually created more hate and division than Unity. Moreover those state have indigenes which does not limit it to one ethnic group. Were are talking about someone that is not indigenous to the state |

afam4eva: Do you act like an indigene? Are you freaking kidding yourself? So, it all boils down to acting film. I mean do u behave like an indigene. there is no point in the state he lives having their own language and culture while u a settler have ANOTHER language and culture because it creates divisions. |

afam4eva: That's why there's no such thing as being a citizen of a state. It's only in a backward place like Nigeria that you hear such. What states look at is how long that person has lived in that state. For example, if you've lived for at least one year in a state in the US, it qualifies you to enjoy all that residents of that state enjoy. In some cases they even transfer your residence immediately. I've seen out-state students doing it so that they can pay the same tuition with in-state students. So, it boils down to where you live at the moment and not where you were born or have lived for a long time. Nigeria is not backward America which have an homogenous language and culture can transfer from state to state with ease and still feel at home and even at that people don't like going to Texas and southern american states because of the religious difference |
Politics › Re: Why Did Awo Lose The 1979 Election? by aljharem3: 2:36pm On Oct 15, 2011 |
noblemuk: you should recall that Awo ruled as leader of the the Yoruba geopolitical zone which was one of the three recognised geopolitical zones in Nigeria at that time. He was the Premier of the Western Region of Nigeria from October 1, 1954 until December 15, 1959. Nonetheless, his accomplishments dwarf the combined achievements of the last five heads of government Nigeria has had. you should understand that you can not excuse his towering influence in the advancement of the yoruba people as a weakness for nationalism. His influence was greatly felt in the Yoruba land because it was the region under which he had jurisdiction. His impact is still being felt and multiplied in the land as at today. He exercised his ingeniousness in affecting the whole of Nigeria by masterminding the end of the Nigerian civil war when he was a federal minister under General Yakubu Gowon. If he had been given the chance to serve Nigeria and not rigged out at the federal elections, this great man would have transformed the entire country called Nigeria, and who knows, we might not be where we are now as a nation. We probably will be the true giant of Africa where are destiny lies. You have killed the thread. True words |

asorocker: Actually in politics there is no permanent friend or foe but permanent interests, the good thing about Awolowo was that he was able to deceive his followers ( The gullible and blind yorubas from the south west) The same way Fashola/Tinubu is magaing to deceive them by planting grasses and trees and maiking a mountain out of a mole hill of it.
Comparatively neigther Zik or Ojukwu developed the East but some unsung heroes by the names Micheal Okpara and Akanu Ibiam. Zik had a dream (pan africanism ) that ended up in a night mare where as Ojukwu saw the future but went about the future the wrong way.
Nobody and i repeat nobody would have somebody like Awolowo as a friend , some people could manage him as a political associate and when Elections are over the lines will be drawn . Have you ever wondered what happened to the so called Awolowo legacies, the ibadan that was his capital is now the dirtiest city in nigeria (human settlement rather than city ) The so called free education he embarked has only ended up putting his tribe as the third most eduated tribe in nigeria even his indigenisation policies which threw up incompetent C.E.Os of yoruba origin ended up producing unprofitable firms like unilever , dunlop and failed industrial complexes in ikeja which has been taken over by New Generation Churches Haba, leave the yorubas out of this and face the topic. Did Awolowo have friends outside the SW of Nigeria. Yes or no |

afam4eva: The welsh have a different accent from the English people. Have you noticed the way Alex ferguson of Manchester united who's a Scot speaks? Yes they do but you, can a typical english man tell the difference. As far as Alex Ferguson is concerned, he can pass as a Yorkshire man with is accent. afam4eva: With your logic, it means an English Canadian will pass as an American simply because they sound like Americans. if they were in the same country, then yes they might not know the difference |

He remains a welsh living in England, with all the rights that accrues to people living in England. It's only England that's an English speaking country. Afam, A welsh man does not speak English as his native language but once he gets to england, He quickly adapts and Learn English with the way of life in England thus I believe he can past as an English man isn't it ? |

afam4eva: You have to learn to seperate an artificial creation from an ethnicity. Lagos is a state and not an ethnicity. There's no where it states that Lagos is a Yoruba state. You can only see something like "Lagos is predominantly occupied by Yorubas". That does not mean that someone that's not Yoruba cannot be from there. And the person musn't know how to speak Yoruba.
Btw, what do you mean by "british culture". If there's anything like that. Then british culture will include being caucasian. Don't you think so? Now you are bring colour and race into this. It has nothing to do with race, if you look at the people living in england and are non-white Majority of them that are british have so level of command of English and understand the way of life. About Lagos, I really do not want to discuss about it |

Kobojunkie: um . . . . what business of your is it what culture individuals choose to learn?? This is what I am speaking to -- this need to suggest for others how they ought to live their lives. It is WRONG!!! Unless you are going to tell us all that Orji, in Abia State, did the right thing by chasing people who he pretends are not from Abia, out.
The constitution DOES NOT STIPULATE that one needs claim his father's place as his place of origin, nor does it stipulate that one needs to subscribe to one culture/language or the other. Kobo, If the non- abians have acted like the Abians then I believe Orji would not have known the difference or would he ? I am not telling anyone how to act or behave but if you want to pass as an indigene of a place, then I believe it is imperative you act like an indigene |

afam4eva: In an ideal setting, a batu man can claim to be an Imolite. Mind you the name of the state is Imo and not Igbo. Even if it's Igbo sef. Are there no Nigerian citizens of England? Is English not an ethnicity? My brother, England is a country. Ok let me use Igbo as an analogy. If an Igbo man grew all his life in Kaduna state, does not understand Igbo and only hausa language, and does like the locals then You can say he is a kaduna indigene. Majority of Igbos in Lagos are JJCs and some do not understand Yoruba or know the way of life, In fact some are more Igbo than the ones in the east, There is NO WAY they are Lagosian. The culture in Lagos is distinct and it is either you conform or leave, These other groups are well adapted to eg the Ijaws. Now to the England analogy. The way of life inn England is distinct and you cannot or you can NEVER claim to be British if you do not know the way of life there. If you do not understand English or know the british culture, you cannot claim to be British. I guess same works in Nigeria. |

afam4eva: With the way Nigeria is, you're from where your parents are from. That's because people are identified based on ethnicity in Nigeria. It's easier for a Yoruba person claim to be from Lagos than for an Igbo person to claim the same. Even though technically it's not supposed to be like that. Yes the state you claim is very much based on ethnicity. You can not call yourself a batu man and claim to an imolite, It does not work that way. |

Kobojunkie: Typical Nigerian move, so what if you do not know your father, or he disowned you? Also, on what stone are these rules written? Or is that how the constitution defines it? Then the only culture you would learn is that of your immediate environment unless the mother trained the person up to have an identity then I am sure he can claim his mother's root |
