Naeto has officially introduced himself to the Chukwuekes. According to what I heard, he took a few family members to the Lagos home of his girlfriend to inform the family of his intention to marry Nicole. The quiet introduction took place on Monday Oct 31, 2011. Big congrats to them. Lucky girl!

Olajide Fashikun, Nigeria journalist, arrested over stories alleging corruption in NFF

A journalist in Nigeria was arrested and faces a libel lawsuit over a series of stories alleging corruption in the Nigerian Football Federation.
Olajide Fashikun, editor of the National Accord newspaper, was arrested last Wednesday.
He faces a lawsuit over a series of articles he wrote in which he claimed that a letter from FIFA to the country's soccer organizing body carried a forged signature.

Olajide Fashikun

Police arrested Fashikun, ransacked the officers of the National Accord newspaper -- where he worked -- and seized his laptop and hard drive, the International Press Institute said.
He was later released.
The subject of Fashikun's articles is a letter purportedly from Sepp Blatter, the president of FIFA, which congratulates Aminu Maigari on his election as head of the Nigerian Football Federation.
Maigari's election in August 2010 was controversial after his main opponent withdrew from the race.
Now, the football federation has sued Fashikun, saying that his articles have damaged the integrity of committee.
Last year, FIFA was close to suspending Nigeria for government interference.
After the national team performed poorly in the 2010 World Cup, Nigeria said it would ban the team from international competition for two years.

Presidency orders probe into Diezani mansion

President Goodluck Jonathan may have ordered the National Intelligence Agency, to conduct full investigations into an Austrian newspaper report alleging the purchase of a €20 million mansion by the minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke.

Mrs Alison-Madueke was one of the recipients of the national honours in Abuja yesterday and has also petitioned the agency to clear the dust generated by the newspaper report, which she described as a "negative character onslaught." Likewise, the Nigerian ambassador to Austria has also been ordered to examine the report, with a view to ascertaining its veracity or otherwise.

Presidency sources disclosed that the president was becoming "irritated by the spate of phantom foreign media-induced attack on the oil and gas industry."

It was also learnt that the federal government may "institute legal actions in Austria, against the publishers of Heute Newspaper, once it is established that the report was fabricated to ridicule a minister of the federal republic. The presidency is approaching the matter with an open mind.

Alison-Madueke, in her petition entitled: ‘Phantom Allegation by Heute Newspaper', and copied the president, implored the director general of the intelligence agency to treat the matter with the urgency that it deserved.

Written by Agency Reporter

The Kanu Heart Foundation has announced plans to establish a Cardiac Centre for the treatment of heart diseases in the country.

Its founder, former football star, Mr. Nwankwo Kanu, stated this in Abuja on Tuesday at a news conference, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

He said the foundation decided to build the hospital to reduce the rate of death among patients and cut down on the cost of travelling abroad for treatment.

Kanu noted that recent experiences and the fresh alarm raised by experts over the rising incidence of heart diseases among children in the country had also motivated the foundation to undertake the project.

• IFC to build second Niger Bridge, three others
About $67 billion (N10.6trillion) would be required to fix Nigeria’s infrastructural deficit in the next four years, it was leant yesterday.

Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who disclosed this yesterday at the opening session of the Africa Regional Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Conference in Lagos, said the funds would be used to upgrade roads, fix bridges, channeled to the energy sector, the ports, hospitals and schools. The Information Technology sector also needs more investment among others, to create jobs and attract foreign direct investment.

Okonjo-Iweala, who was represented by Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Yerimas Lawan Ngama, said the budget alone cannot finance these projects and, therefore, called for Public- Private Partnership (PPP). "We need cheaper capital to support our growth. We expect such funds to come through PPP," she said.
The Finance Minister said the construction of the Second Niger bridge, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, the Abuja International Airport and the Benin-Shagamu Expressway top government’s priority list in infrastructure financing.
She said the private sector is willing to enter into partnership with governments on PPP investments, but doing that will be dependent on returns on investments on those projects.
Okonjo-Iweala said Nigeria needs clear institutional framework for the implementation, management and assessment of PPP projects within the government, which would set clear roles and responsibilities for regulation, preparation, assessment, supervision, and final monitoring and evaluation.
She said the projects also need to be bankable. "The private sector is looking for bankable projects. The reason Indonesia is not working as well as it should is because of the failure to get good bankable projects to market as such would promote more PPP in the economy," she said. Okonjo-Iweala noted that PPP takes a long time to mature even in the best of times and that the more a project is spread out, the complex it becomes. She regretted that in Nigeria, PPP projects take twice the time needed to complete them in other countries, noting that this has to be addressed to attract investors. Besides, she said that Nigeria needs a transparent private sector and the understanding development partners to get the PPP working.
Meanwhile, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, also announced it will provide Advisory Services for a new public-private partnership to build a hospital in Cross River State, and that it will explore the financing of a second Niger River bridge project at the request of the government.
IFC will also consider the feasibility of a public-private partnership that would lead to investment for a second Niger River bridge crossing.

HealthEpidemic Looms In Agege; As Dirty Abattoir Poses Danger To Health by aloyemeka4(op): 11:22pm On Nov 15, 2011
Epidemic Looms In Agege; As Dirty Abattoir Poses Danger To Health

Residents of Old Abeokuta Motor Road, Abattoir in Oko-Oba and other areas in Agege, Lagos, are at the risk of impending outbreak of epidemic as a result of the offensive odour from the abattoir located in the area.

Apart from damage to the environment, the abattoir is a stop over for flood any time it rained as most of the drainages around are blocked by refuse discharged from there.

Yusuf Olayinka, a butcher, told Lagos Bulletin that the area is always flooded as the canal from Fagba to the abattoir and another one in Oko-Oba Estate are blocked completely.

According to him, the disgusting odour complained of by the residents is as a result of flushing of blood and other wastes from slaughtered cows into the canal.

One of the residents, Sola Olaosebi, said the situation is becoming unbearable and called on the appropriate authorities to do something fast about it.
Another resident, Olayinka, lamented that efforts made to stop the flood ravaging the area whenever it rained and the unpleasant odour discharged from the abattoir have been to no avail and therefore pleaded with government to come to their aid.
However, a butcher who refused to disclose his identity, said the problem of flooding was caused by government as some of the roads in the area are bad while the gutters are blocked. He also blamed some traders in the market for dumping refuse in the gutters.
Oriyomi Olaoye, another butcher, said the flood can be stopped if only the canal can be widened and made more deep, noting, however, that the unpleasant odour at the abattoir is common to areas where such are located.

Pastor: Wife Infected Me With Incurable Disease

A church pastor, Mr. Wisdom Orji recently stunned the Agege Grade A Customary Court, Lagos, when he said he was seeking dissolution of his marriage with his estranged wife, Chioma, because she infected him with an incurable disease.
In his petition, he alleged that his wife also intimidated, harassed him and destroyed his property, while she drove him out of the house.
The petitioner further alleged that she is quarrelsome, saying, “she calls me all sorts of names and converted my property to hers.”
Counsel to the petitioner, Mrs. Chinenye, begged the court to give both parties time for settlement. According to her, arrangements have been made to ensure the petitioner takes care of his wife and children.
The court president, Mr. Emmanuel Shokunle, advised the petitioner to take the respondent to hospital for treatment, while urging the respondent to give her husband access to their matrimonial home.
The matter has been adjourned indefinitely.

Fashola re-introduces toll on Lekki-Epe road

Written by Kunle Awosiyan, Lagos
Tuesday, 15 November 2011

As part of effort to meet the 2012 revenue target, Lagos State governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola, has re-introduced toll on Lekki-Epe Expressway, saying that government lost N4 billion for failing to collect the toll in 2011.

He made this pronouncement at the presentation of the 2012 budget to the state House of Assembly, adding that the N4billion could have been used to provide other developmental projects across the state.

The government stopped the plan to collect toll on the road, following series of unrest and threat by the residents who described the idea as exploitation by the state government.

According to the governor, the concessionaire, Lekki Concession Company Limited (LCC), who financed the project will reserve the right to announce the new take-off of the toll which was earlier scheduled to commence on January 3, 2011 before the indefinite suspension.

Fashola said: “The politically motivated resistance to the commencement of toll collection on the Eti-Osa, Lekki-Epe Expressway means that the government had to part with N4billion for year 2011 which could have been used to provide more schools, inner roads, hospitals and social needs in Eti-Osa, Ibeju-Lekki and Epe areas. This decision was sensible and necessary in order to maintain much needed and growing investor confidence in the Lagos economy, in order to maintain our credit rating and reduce our credit risk. It was critical to maintaining the stream of emerging investments required to create business opportunity and jobs for young people.”

“Regrettably however, our financial realities cannot sustain such funding to the detriment of other developments that are crying out for funding in other parts of the state.”
