America was humiliated by Japan in ww2, but for the use of Nulear weapon they were completely messed up. We are also familiar with their humiliation by Vietnamese.

I believe MTN may be the only network that is making profit currently because they control over 35% of the subscriber base in Nigeria and they are less aggressive in Marketing and thus pricing regime and so they have higher earning per subscriber than all other Telecos. With this edge, MTN may have broken even (from their pre-investment capital) and thus be on their way to greater profitability just by maintaining their huge customer base.

This does not mean that other companies are not going to be profitable, going forward or not profitable overall. That is why, they are spending so much on Marketing to grab more customers and indulging in aggressive pricing. Honestly, these companies bottom line are good, otherwise, they would have died. Lets try to be fair and truthful in our comments for the sake of our country; if this happened in advanced countries, the President will be fired in days.

If you have the option of Self Employment and an oil company job as a fresh graduate, go for the oil company job. You can then gradually build your business on the side. Many guys i know own different businesses while working for oil companies.

From my personal experience and reading studies worldwide, about 90% of small businesses WILL fail within the first 10 years of existence.

In Nigeria, unless you get huge government contract or lash on to a sudden opportunity and use the proceed wisely most businesses you set up would have truncated future, because of capital inadequacy and cost of fund.

Just a number of observations:
I hope we have enough people on this forum old enough to remember a bus made in Nigeria called BUREM? There was initial euphoria for this bus and they were purchased by governments at all levels, but it eventually failed because of poor policies and strategies.

For those who want 100% Made in Nigeria vehicle; i am afraid you will wait till eternity. The headlamps for NISSAN, HONDA, TOYOTA are made in Germany. Same for some of the Cabburator, which are mostly made in USA.

By the way, i know that Peugeot 504 achieved at least 35% local production with support from several (Almost 100)Nigerian manufacturers producing cable harness, some body frames, Tyre,pointers and headlamps among others.

My 10 Kobo: I think 50% of the problem is caused by most of the schools (especially public schools and poor low-grade Private Schools) not completing the syllabus and most of the schools presenting carry-go candidates.

Most of the students now a days, as part of the corruption prevalent in the society are lazy and expect to find short cut.

SOLUTION
Apart from a major overhaul of our school system, I think promotions should only be by merit, so that only qualified candidates would sit for WAEC and UTME.

Thanks for your insight, but it is clear that Dangote is not a monopolistic enterprise. You see, all governments in the world protect their own, even fraudulently, for the sake of development of technology, skill and economy. China for example gives interest rates for less than 2% to her citizens; many of them failed to pay and it is ignored. I was in the U.S. in 2004 when i read about a $750million contract given to an IT firm, that failed to produce the expected result. The company is one of the big players in the world today.

By the way, Dangote can choose to import, but keeps producing most of their products in Nigeria. It is not easy, my brother!

Let me remind you of a recent event. The U.S. Ministry of Defense awarded a contract for on-air refueling tanker aircraft to AIRBUS of France. BOEING of U.S. protested and used all their contacts to have the contract nullified and re-awarded to them. The U.S. government paid a heavy fine, but did not care.

For those complaining about price, may i suggest that the investors are taking too much risk and they need unusual returns to make up. A quick example: The governor (Amosun) is already asking Dangote to construct road to his factory, yet the company pays so much tax.

I prefer OANDO, DANGOTE, ZINOX, GLO to what has happened to our Textile industries now that we import "quality" textiles from Cote de vua, Ghana, Togo. I would feel ashamed. It was when our own Adenuga's GLO came, that MTN suddenly discovered that per second billing is possible!
