Alfamann:

Have you all noticed a pattern with all these urban legend protagonists? It is always "I was told", "my friend saw it", "it happenned to a distant relation" "oyibo wrote it in a book" etc. They never have a first hand account.

My husbands father was not a "distant relative". If you want a "first hand account" I suggest you jump in a time machine and set the dial to 1900, then come back and tell us how it really went down. The generation affected by this are well into their 90's many have passed away. The generation that witnessed/perpetrated this are long gone.

Alfamann:

See bold faced lie. The problem with liars is that they don't know when they overlie. If your grandfather was a twin in a twin killing community, how come he was still alive at 97? Or did your community do selective killing?

What are you ranting about!? Simples. They killed one, kept the other. No reason to lie, its a shameful/misguided practice and if u ask people/elders of a certain age they will know about it. Don't know why you are getting so worked up about this topic.
Politics / Re: 40 Abuja Towns Kill Twins! by amarush(f): 12:48pm On Mar 27, 2013
Hard to believe such practices are still happening in this day and age. I only found out about twin killings a few years ago when my father in law died at the ripe old age of 97. Discussing his life with my hubby who disclosed that his twin was killed, as then it (multiple births) were seen as an abomination, but we are talking about nearly 100 years ago.

oluplus: . 0arush, pls let me ask some few questions abt cvs. Was told it has a level risk involved, like deformaton of the baby, loss of pregnancy, the aftermath pain. Is dis true. Learnt it's done in just 1 hospital in Lagos. Do u know of any other centres? Yes, i know u live abroad.

Hi. Sorry stated the wrong procedure. I actually had Amniocentisis but was scheduled to have a CVS, its the same procedure but for CVS the placenta is used as opposed to amniotic fluid. The consultant changed his mind because of the position of the baby. There is a 1 in 200 risk of miscarriage for both procedures, but to my knowledge there is no risk of deformaty. You are advised to rest for a couple of days but the pain is not bad, only a dull ache and was given some paracetamol. I had the same consultant both times, great Nigerian guy, really put me at ease. I'm not surprised that its not widely available its an intrusive procedure and should only be performed by a specialist. Sorry I don't know any places that do it over there.

Smh at all this misdiagnosis. Same thing with my husband, two tests in Nigeria both results AA. Husband was tested in the UK at the insistance of the hospital after I got pregnant and I tested AS. Husband result came back AS. Anyway we have to beautiful children, first born AA, second AS. Both pregnancies opted to have CVS, a procedure where a needle is inserted through your stomach to extract amniotic fluid to test for SS in the babies. 2 week wait for the results, the longest two weeks of my life.

Family / Re: FOR MOTHERS.. How Did You Get Your Child To Stop B.reas.t Feeding? by amarush(f): 7:44pm On Feb 22, 2013
Are you still giving night feeds at 1 year old? I feel for you, my first child was breast fed upto 13 months so was difficult to wean off the b.reast milk and was still looking for milk at night. Gave a bottle of formula during the day and before bed. Then if she woke at night gave her water, she realised that she was not gonna get milk at night so eventually just slept though it took a looonnng time to get there. I learnt from my mistake and so with my second started early. When she was 8 months started to wean her off night feeds. If she woke up at night i gave her water and let her cry it out, there were sleepless nights but now at 10 months she sleeps from 7pm till 7am. Its wasn't easy esp at night, but luckily I'm on maternity leave so didn't have to worry about falling asleep at my desk. I found that water and cry it out worked, so good luck.

Me and my husband are both AS. We found out i was AS after i got preganant as part of my antenatel care in hospital. Hubby had been tested in naija and was told he was AA, but the hospital wanted to test him also, apparently if you are from asia or africa they will retest you as they have come across people who have been misdiagnosed. Anyway, hubby was tested and he was also AS, he was sooooooo shocked as tested as a teen and always belived he was AA. We have two kids, the first is AA (3 years old) and the second is AS (7 months old).

btw his older sister was tested in naija and told she was AA, she was retested over here (UK) and is infact AS, luckily her husband is AA. They were both tested a number of years ago and i hope that the procedures have tightned up. Misdiagnosis is no joke.

Health / Re: Pregnancy Are You Pregnant Or Going Through A High Risk Pregnancy,,lets Talk by amarush(f): 10:00am On Mar 29, 2012
Praise God..... further to my last post i delivered a bouncy baby girl on 22/03, she weighed in at 7Ibs 14oz @ 39weeks. In comparison to my first pregnancy this was text book stright forward, presented my self at hospital and shocked to find that i was 8cms dilated! Contractions (very painful) started at 2am, went into hospital at 8am and she was born at 10.37am, the gas & air really helped, in fact the midwife asked hubby to take it off me LOL as i was overusing it. Last time i had forceps and episiotmy and tore really badly, so i thank god this time was smooth. Now all i have to deal with are my engorged breasts which are oh so painful. Good luck to all you mothers to be!

Hi all,

I'm 38 weeks pregnant, with my second child, baby is due on 23 March and my daughter turns 3 on 25 March smiley. I'm hoping for a natural birth this time, i.e. no meds. I had an epidural with my first child, however talk is cheap and i have a low pain threshold, the pain was toooooooo much at 5cms dilated so who knows! Had a check up yesterday and advised that i have high blood pressure, so have to go back for further assessment on Monday.

Nice thread btw.

Travel / Re: Who Will Foot The £200,000 Bill?! by amarush(f): 11:15pm On Jul 04, 2011
The right wing media are always harping on about immigration and national health tourism etc, but lets call a spade a spade - the lady knew what she was doing. The downside is her actions will add fuel to fire about those from outside the EU abusing the system, we have already seen the UK government introduce restrictions on student visas, now they will turn their attention to those travelling seeking medical assistance.  The main issue for taxpayers in the UK (i am one of them) is the cost. Don't get me wrong, I'm as left wing as they come,  but people get are angry when someone is taking out of a system that they have never paid into. I gave birth to my daughter in that same hospital, the ward was very busy and i had to wait for a bed, then all the doctors were tied up in surgery. I would have been massively p**** off if i was waiting for a bed / to see doctor tied up by some one like the lady in question. Then to add fuel to the fire (raging inferno!) she now wants to stay.

I watched a programme the other night about a premature baby unit, a couple travelled from Kuwait on holiday and the wife had the baby 3 months early, the baby received care for three months and the cost was around 140k, the husband said on camera he did not have the means to pay, and was really worried about the bill. They later announced on the programme that the Kuwaiti government had settled the bill, and once discharged the family had travelled back to Kuwait.  The NHS should send the bill to the High Commission and ask them to settle it, and when the babies are strong enough the family should travel back home.

I am british born was tested at birth and found to be AS, travlled to Nigeria in 2004 and met my now husband. My husband has been tested in Nigeria and told he was AA, so we never had any worries. However, when i was pregnant (2009) and because of my geno type, hospital insisted that my husband be tested as they had found that people tested abroad (Asia and Africa) there was a high incidence of mistaken results. Anway, so they tested by husband (who was 200% positive that result would be AA) and went to get the result. The nurse started off "this is the reason we often test those from abroad, your result is AS! My hubby looked like he was going to collapse and i was dumbstruck! Anyway as is was still in the first trimester, we opted to test the unborn baby (needle is inserted and fluid from the sac is taken to be tested). We waited 2 weeks for the result and the hospital called to say , your baby is AA!!!! 6 months lator gave birth to a beautiful girl. We were soooooo happy, but dont know what we would have done if the result was SS. Being an IGBo man (and only son of his parents) he wanted to have a large family, but now that we are carriers have decided to limit and pray that they are AA or AS. We r currently trying for a second, the joy of being pregnant will be tinged with the realisation that we will test the unborn baby again for sickle cell. The wait to find out was the longest few weeks of my life and im not lookin forward to doing it again.
Fashion / What Is The Price Range Of Ladies Underwear? by amarush(f): 3:07pm On Oct 28, 2010
Hi, i am in the UK and have access to quality wholesale ladies underwear; for example matching bras and knicker sets, strapless/multiway bras (padded/push up/underwired), thongs, shorts, corsets etc (and for those with an open mind erotic lingerie )

The products are made in Turkey and Poland (as well as the UK), I have two questions 1. Is there a market for such products, or is there stiff competition from cheaper imports eg from China? 2. What is the price range of ladies underwear - ranging from the cheapest to the most expensive. I have a cousins in Warri and Lagos who are investigating for me, but i would also like the views of fellow members. I appreciate prices will vary depending on location but comments welcome just the same.

Thanks in advance.

Adverts / Re: I Want To Buy Perfumes In Wholesale Any Dealer? by amarush(f): 12:25pm On May 27, 2008
what type of purfume are you interested in, is it branded high end fragrances ie CK, Armani, Dior etc? Do you want to sell for men and women and what is your initial capital outlay?

Fragrances vary in strength, a factor that directly influences its price. The main ingredient is an alcoholic water solution. It is the percentage of perfume relative to the water that determines its strength.

for Women…Parfum is the strongest concentration and is compiled to provide exceptionally long-lasting fragrance from very little liquid. Parfum is the most expensive variant of the fragrance range and can retail in excess of £100.00
Eau de Parfum (Edp) is the next strongest version and is intended to give a more enduring scent for a more reasonable price
Eau de Toilette (Edt) is the most popular and affordable concentration. Containing a higher percentage of water and fewer essential oils, Edt is nearly always presented in a spray
Eau de Cologne is weaker than Edt with a lower concentration of essential oils
Eau Fraiche has a very low fragrance content and is sometimes called ‘Perfumed Mist’. Often alcohol free, this concentration proves popular in the summer months

for Men…
Edt Spray is generally the strongest concentration available and can be used on the body and on clothing but should not be used as an aftershave as it may cause irritation
Aftershave is weaker than Edt so that it can be used on the face
Aftershave Balm is a perfumed lotion or cream of similar concentration
