Malaria, known as tropical disease has been known as one of the greatest killers in Africa and other tropical countries. Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. It is preventable and curable. Most times this disease is treated with levity and kid gloves, malaria has destroyed lives and human capacity. This destruction (in)directly affects the economy of the locale that it is prevalent, example Nigeria. With various medications aimed at treating this scourge, locales have tried using herbs such as quinine and other things to treat such, but as they have tried, the plasmodium, which is the parasite that causes malaria has been resistant to malaria over the years making the disease a nightmare for scientist and governments in the countries that the disease is rampant. But, with the advancement in the medical world, drugs like Coatal Forte Soft Gel and others have shown promise in the eradication of this scourge. Not only a health issue, malaria has been described by experts as an economic issue. Malaria has been known to have affected the gross domestic product (GDP) of many economies in the tropic through loss of man hours or amount used in taking care of the citizenry and this runs in the billions of Naira , as it pertains Nigeria. In 2017, there were an estimated 219 million cases of malaria in 87 countries. The estimated number of malaria deaths stood at 435 000 in 2017. Most countries, especially in the African sub Saharan Region carry a disproportionately high share of the global malaria burden. In 2017, the region was home to 92% of malaria cases and 93% of malaria deaths. Total funding for malaria control and elimination reached an estimated US$ 3.1 billion in 2017. Contributions from the governments of endemic countries amounted to US$ 900 million, representing 28% of total funding. The malaria parasites are spread to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes, called “malaria vectors.” There are 5 parasite species that cause malaria in humans, and 2 of these species – P. falciparum and P. vivax – pose the greatest threat. Posing as a high risk for many countries. Malaria is a risk for about 97% of Nigeria’s population. There are an estimated 100 million malaria cases with over 300,000 deaths per year in Nigeria, contributing to an estimated 11% of maternal mortality! Though Malaria is a preventable, treatable disease, but it has a devastating effect in African countries, Nigeria more especially. Treatment of malaria has evolved over the years from the use of quinine, which can be gotten from herbs to the use of chloroquine, this has serious side effects such as itching and tolerance. Today, Artemisinin-based combination therapies remain effective in almost all settings, as long as the partner drug in the combination is locally effective. This is one of the key factors that Coatal Forte Soft Gel has demonstrated as an effective treatment of malaria. Also, Camasulin Amartem and a host of others can also be used to prevent malaria. For travellers, malaria can be prevented through chemoprophylaxis, which suppresses the blood stage of malaria infections, thereby preventing malaria disease. Since 2012, WHO has recommended seasonal malaria chemoprevention as an additional malaria prevention strategy for areas of the Sahel sub-region of Africa. The strategy involves the administration of monthly courses of amodiaquine plus sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine to all children under 5 years of age during the high transmission season. Some progress has been made in malaria control from access to vector control interventions, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. However, these gains are threatened by emerging resistance to insecticides among Anopheles mosquitoes. With over 68 countries reported mosquito resistance to at least 1 of the 5 commonly-used insecticide while 57 reported resistance to 2 or more insecticide classes. Early diagnosis and treatment of malaria reduces disease and prevents deaths. It also contributes to reducing malaria transmission. The best available treatment, particularly for P. falciparum malaria, is artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) such as Coatal Forte Soft Gel . Treatment, solely on the basis of symptoms should only be considered when a parasitological diagnosis is not possible. https://etimes.com.ng/malaria-an-economic-and-health-burden-to-countries-like-nigeria-and-its-control/ #coatalfortesoftgel #toughonmalariasoftonyou |

Reddington Hospital, one of the leading multi-specialist hospitals in Nigeria recently established a level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), one of the very few in the country and this unit was set up following an investment, funded by the Bank of Industry and Access Bank of Nigeria, and the aim is to offer and provide quality healthcare to neonates including preterm babies. A neonate is a baby aged between 1 and 28 days. An Intensive Care Unit is a unit where critically ill patients are treated at a more intensive level than is needed by other patients. Hence, a NICU is a facility for the care of critically ill babies including prematures. It is a known fact that Nigeria’s health indicators are poor and while the government can do so much, there is need for the private sector to contribute and support what the government is able to provide. This was one of the reasons Reddington Multi-specialist Hospital took that step, not only to blaze the trail and change the narrative in the care of the newborn space, but also to set a better standard of care for this vulnerable age group. The NICU at Reddington is a 6 bed facility with state of the art equipment like the Giraffe incubators and Infant Resuscitaires, highly sophisticated ventilators, capable of ventilating preterm babies weighing as low as 500gm (about the weight of an apple) infusion pumps to deliver pre-set fluid rates, syringe drivers, arterial blood gas measurement, phototherapy for babies with jaundice. We also have a Transport Incubator Ambulance System, which can be used to transport a new born preterm baby from anywhere in Lagos to our facility in Victoria Island.Image preview The unit is managed by Two well-trained and highly experienced Consultant Neonatologists/Paediatricians. They are Dr Olajide Ojo, the Head of the Department of Paediatrics, with 15-year experience in the care of premature babies and older children. The other Consultant is Dr Raj Kishore, who has his Fellowship in Neonatology with relevant experience caring for over 700 babies both in Africa and India. These two doctors are supported by a team of trained nurses specialized in Neonatal Intensive care amongst other support staff providing a 24-hour coverage for the unit. These are to further improve the outcome of the care of these babies. Recently, using our Transport Incubator Ambulance, we evacuated a premature baby girl delivered at 25 weeks’ gestation (just about 6-month old pregnancy) with birth weight of 800gm, from another hospital in Lagos within a few hours of delivery. For ease of comparison, an average normal new-born baby weighs about 3kg, meaning this baby was about a quarter of the weight of a new-born. While there are always huge challenges in the in management of these prematures anywhere in the world especially those at 25 weeks of gestation, however our team rose to the task successfully dealing with various complications and challenges that came up throughout her 65 days stay in hospital. We are happy to inform you that the baby having progressively improved, gaining tremendous weight while on admission has now been discharged home to the delight of her parents. Reddington Hospital recently committed the required resources in terms of manpower and technology for the purpose of caring of the new-borne especially preterm babies for better outcome. While there is need to stem and reverse the trend of medical tourism abroad, it is extremely important that potential parents and medical practitioners are aware of such facilities available locally, especially when time is of great essence. We are exploring collaborating with other hospitals, both public and private, to train and develop human capacity in ensuring that skilled medical personnel are in attendance at labour and deliveries. This will definitely go a long way in improving patient outcomes. https://etimes.com.ng/reddington-hospital-achieves-landmark-success-with-the-care-of-a-25-week-premature-baby/ Dr Olajide Ojo

Osaze007:In secession or if Biafra happens things would happen Millions of Igbo would leave ...they would leave with their money, expertise and business Let's take for instance about a million igbo have 100k in account ...they withdraw it and do you know it's about 100 billion leaving Lagos alone and what is the effect 1. Lagos economy would crash 2. Entertainment industry would crash 3. Aviation industry would crash... Passengers would dwindle and aviation firms would close shops and people would loose jobs 4. Accommodation would crash because the prices of houses would be so low that real estate industry would witness dull ..then depression sets in 5. Apapa ports would be a ghost town 6. Marina would be all tall building no occupants because the companies would head to other regions 7. Embassies in Lagos would open up in Biafra 8. Oil firms would close in Lagos 9. Business would deep, the Lagos economy would witness capital flight and the Biafra would witness capital gain 10. Sports would suffer Also If Biafra comes up as the op Siad...my dear, the Igbo would leave and trust me the Yoruba would beg Igbo to stay but if they stay they still gain because they would still send the money to Biafra If you want to know how Lagos would be if Biafra comes ...which we might not want...wait till Christmas period ! Then igbo have left town ! |

Lionhearted Genevieve Nnaji has a way of making us revisit her anytime. Having done a review of her movie LionHeart, Genevieve in that movie raised the bar on what Nollywood movies ought to look like and also she demonstrated how best to market a movie. She brought her business acumen to merge with her seemingly overflowing artistic skills – a clear migration from acting to producing and now directing. Not yet done with making news, the sultry and pretty actress announced a big one, the Oscars! The actress made this announcement using one of her social media handles, she said “The Nigerian Oscar Selection Committee has chosen @lionheartthemovie to represent Nigeria for the 2020 Academy Award for Best International Film! This is the first entry ever for Nigeria. It’s an honor to be a part of such a pivotal moment in the history of Nigerian cinema.” She added “A moment we know will be replicated as our stories continue to resonate with audiences around the world. On behalf of the entire LIONHEART team and TEN Productions, we are grateful for this recognition and proud to carry the torch. Thank you all for the love and support thus far.”Image may contain: 1 person, close-up, text that says "LIONHEART IN CINEMAS DECEMBER 21" This singular moves according to the industry watchers would put Nigeria on the map. The era of producing wishy-washy movies that are filled with terrible native doctors scenes, depicting Africans in bad light is going. Genevieve has raised the standard unless you would want to go local, but she was not going local… eyes on the international market. Genevieve captured the Igbo cultural nuances and tried to point out the errors as it is with every other cultures around the world and importantly, she proffered solution to them. Lionheart tells the story of Adaeze Obiagu (portrayed by Nnaji), who wants to substitute for her father, Chief Ernest Obiagu (Pete Edochie), when he can no longer run his company due to health issues.https://etimes.com.ng/oscars-genevieve-can-she-be-siad-to-be-trully-lionhearted/ https://etimes.com.ng/oscars-genevieve/
