@Sapeleguy: The Ohanaeze faction that supported third term bid was existing in a vacuum. Achuzia held unto power when his boss Irukwu resigned. Their tenure expired but he held on and was supported by few rich politicians. The case went to court and Ikedife's faction won. The Ikedife faction never supported Obasanjo's third term bid, in fact they buried that bid. I think, it is better for Ndigbo to tell their own stories than others telling it. |

Culture › Re: Similarity Between Bini And Igbo by AndreUweh(m): 5:04pm On Nov 13, 2010 |
omonuan: I can't speak on Agbontaen's motivations. However, I have seen his positions on not being Igbo. I chose not to participate on that thread because another Ika man from Igbodo has given him history lessons on the issue. Moreover, I don't participate on threads where insults are bandied around.
Furthermore, I know that those Igbo that deny being Igbo like some Ikwerre, Agbontaen and his cohorts are strident in their beliefs. So even if their father tells them they are Igbo they'll still insist they are not. Afterall, the Obi of Owa participates in Igbo activities and has stated that Owa came from Nri yet Agbontaen who claims to be from Owa has not taken heed.
For those Anioma people that say they are Bini, they do so out of nothing but nostalgia. I have given a cornucopia of common words used by Bini and Anioma. However, 98-99% of Anioma words are Igbo. I was once at a gathering in Asaba where Anioma politicians gathered and where lamenting the demise of the famous Igbo Union of the 50s and 60s. They were saying that If Igbo Union was still in existence, the plight of Igbo in Nigerian would have been better. I interjected by reminding them that some Anioma people say we are not Igbo to which they all responded in unison by saying "then what are we?" One of them coincidentally from Ika said anybody that says that publicly is "ignorant." I agree with him on this into-to.
You guys should let Agbontaen be because another common trait of those people that loath being Igbo is they crave attention. Do not give it to them. I always remind those Anioma Igbo that loath being Igbo that the modern day Bini massacre occurred in 1967 with the blood of Anioma people flowing like river on the streets of Benin City. The only Anioma crime then was that they were Igbo and it was open season on Igbo people -the pogrom against Igbo was every where in Nigeria. I wonder how Agbontean would convince the Bini that he is one of them and not Igbo were he to face the vicious Bini guillotine.
Going back to our Igbo tent of brotherhood would ensure that we will all hold hands with our brothers accross the Niger and say never again! Like the jews did after the holocaust, never again shall the Igbo be massacred on a large scale without retribution. Ise! Thanks a lot and keep it coming. But believe me, be prepared for Agbontaen when he comes in. He is also insultive. |

Onlytruth: I never said there is anything wrong with individual choice. By all means, please vote for whoever pleases you. I never ever said that you MUST VOTE according to Ohanaeze dictates.
All I have always said here is that in the Nigerian political reality, and being an Igbo man who has witnessed the product of that Nigerian politics and its evil impacts on my part of Nigeria, it will be foolhardy for me not to play the same game others have been playing for years, and with which they have short-changed me and my people in Nigeria.
As we are talking, the north is working VERY HARD to pick a CONSENSUS CANDIDATE for next year's election. And they have played the same game for 50 years, and have used it to cheat me.
Igboland is the most marginalized in terms of federal presence and revenue allocation. It did not happen because we played the game others played, rather it happened because we played it your way.
But when you support an animal character attacking me for holding my views, you cross a line. @IKENGA DIKE 1 NA NNEWI: Thanks a lot for this nice thread of yours. Thanks to Ohanaeze for this timely intervention. There is no point in Ohanaeze waiting till the last second to support any candidate. Ohanaeze coming up at this time to endorse G.Ebele.J has done a lot of favour to his camp and his chances are even brighter. Since Uwaechue's endorsement, a lot of Ndigbo whom were hitherto undecided have now joined GEJ's camp. If you speak to five Ndigbo today, atleast four will tell you they are for GEJ, thanks to Ohanaeze for this extraodinary feat. Since the new Ohanaeze, Ndigbo have never had any one better than Uwaechue occupying the number one seat in Igboland today. @Uwaechue, may your days be long. |

ifyalways: I had this notion that diviners ie ndi afa is different from herbalists ie dibia mkporogwu I also heard some diviners(its safe to call them seers) can only forsee then direct u to a dibia for a cure/solution.Dr Ihesie(Umuaka) is a diviner while Nwanyo-bu-ije(Umu ndugba ) is a herbalist.IMO My relgious belifs aside,i still have lots faith in herbalists and very little for diviners who in my opinion are all but almost corrupt.Herbalits use herbs(natural God-given),they study their enviroment to find cures, same cant be said of diviners.IMO Andrew, sometimes though, some of their pratices do look funny and does not add up eg,whats with traditional bone setters getting a fowl, breaking one of its legs and claming that the speed at which it heals wud determine the patients recovery ? It looks funny, weird and suspicious Most of the diviners carry out healing exercises as well. Some may refer you to a more equipped Dibia just as medical consultants make referals for patients/clients. Most of the bone setters do not use fouls or any ritual similar. They use mostly very hot water cooked with pepper and a leaf. The exercise is mostly massaging and rotation of joints. If it is a fracture to the tibia, they use bark of trees to make frames and rings round the external tissue of the fractured tibia. After that, some oral concontions prepared with Manya elu or kai kai is given the client to take home. They will inform you to drink it once, twice or thrice daily. Igbo healing method is very unique. |

But who should we vote for? is it the northerners? what made u think they wil return power come 2015? I didnt initially support Goodluck, but in as much as we hate to admit it,the truth is that at this point in time our best shot is Goodluck,we must start believing in ohaneze, this idea of speaking in different voices is what brought us to this situation today, nobody can claim to know what is best for ndi igbo than ohaneze,Ralph uwechue is our leader,it is bad when people say he is running a south south agenda, when we know his loyalty lies with ndigbo, unless we are saying we dont have ndi igbo in south south, remember that our people say that what an elder see while sitting down,a child cant see it even when he is standing. In Achebe's TFA (1958), the elders of Umuofia asked the white missionaries what will happen to them when Umuofia ancestors get angry at them for abandoning their religion. The missionaries could not sell the idea of abandoning Igbo religion to Umuofians. Their explanation that the religion of Umuofia is made up of dead woods and has no powers was not bought by Umuofia people. As a consequence, Igbo religion is still practised side by side with Christianity in Igboland till date. |

The only places Ikwerres outnumber non natives is in Emohua and Ikwerre. Visit Rumuokoro and other towns in Obio.Akpor, it is full of mostly Ndigbo from the hinterland. omonuan: Andre Uweh: I can tell you that no responsible Ika man that is worth his salt would say that he is not Igbo. Currently, the acting governor of Delta state Sam Obi an Ika man would not come out and say he is not Igbo. Ifeanyi Okowa, Nduka Ogbaigbena, Cairo Ojugbo, Jim Ovia of Zenith Bank fame would not deny Igbo.
I can tell you though that Anioma people for centuries considered the term "Igbo" derogatory because it was used to refer to slaves by them . From this perspective, Anioma people do sometimes say that they are not "Igbo." It is pertinent to say that prior to contact with Europeans, the modern Igbo people did not see themselves as one. I doubt that they collectively called themselves "Igbo." However, ethnically Anioma is as Igbo as Owerri, Ngwa, Ikwerre and Etche, Ohafia, Abiriba although our origins may be diverse. @Jason: no link or reference from your post. The chap who wrote that article must be a rumour monger as well as a war monger. The chap fails to note that Azikiwe was not the first Igbo graduate. The first Igbo graduate emerged in 1927. Bishp Ajayi Crowder etc the author mentioned were re-captives from Sierra Leone. There were Igbo re-captives such as Taylor who was also a graduate. I still maintain that it is not proper for non Yorubas to be organising a fight between Ndigbo and Yorubas. Concentrate on issues going on in Delta state right now than this Igbo vs Yoruba thing. The other day there was an explosion in your Delta state capital. Also only yesterday, Uduaghan was sacked as the gov of your state, yet you do not feel concerned. There are some other ones in Oguta, Awka, Arochukwu, Ikwerre, Okija etc. Lots are still trustworthy. During the Easter period that I was in my home town, a busness man reported to a Dibia about his missing 3 bags of palm kernel. The Dibia then consulted all the men who offloaded the bags of the kernel from a truck that fateful day. All the men denied the accusation and the Dibia had no choice than to devine and find out the culprit. Though red-handed, the guy denied it and took an oath. Within two weeks, his stomach got swollen up and he died as a result. So lots of them are real. |
