they are actually tribes with distinct languages albiet they only sometimes exist in one village. they are grouped coarsely into three
but that doesnt do justice ( a la kalabari, khana and Ikwerre).

the etche language sounds a lot like Igbo though
I do not believe that Nigeria has up to 250 languages as some people do claim. In Rivers State, what you call languages are actually dialects. Etche, Ikwerre, Ogba, Ndoni, Ekpeye are not languages but mere dialects of greater Igbo language. Those who describe this dialects as languages fail to do so on Egba,Ijebu , Offa, Ilorin, Owo, Epe etc. They simply describe them as Yoruba.
CultureRe: Iwa Akwa Festival: by AndreUweh(m): 7:12pm On Aug 12, 2009
Please do a proper academic work on this rich cultural heritage-Iwa Akwa. It is a cultural festival that comes up once in every three years. It is celebrated in Ehime Mbano and not in entire Mbano. It is celebrated in Etiti division which is Ihitte, Uboma and Obowu. Part of Mbaise that shares a border with Ihitte (Ogbo) also celebrates this rich Igbo culture.
More to come later.

Sir Alex spent £18 million to buy Michael Carrick. If Carrick is an African player, would Man U spend that amount?. Are there no African players better than Carrick?.
Sir Alex did not buy Eric Djemba Djemba with the intention of featuring him but as a back up for Roy Keane and Paul Scholes. Q. Fortune also was brought as a back up for R. Giggs while Manucho was not giving a chance at the senior level.
I admire your understanding of your cherished team but believe me, Man U is anti-African.

Passion for a team that disregards Africans. Passion for a team whose manager( Sir Alex) says Africans are not intelligent. On the other hand, the West London team has a high regard for Africans and pays £24 and £26 million to sign them.

I do not know why Nigerians support Man UTD. A clubside that hardly signs Nigerians and Africans. On the other hand, Chelsea, in the past and at present has lot of Afrcan talents. Celestine Iwuoha-Babayaro, Michael Obi, Didier Drogba, Salomon Kalou, Michael Essien, Michael Emenalo (team scout) Claude Makalele-Congo DR/France, Jose Bosingwa-Congo/Portugal etc. For Africans and Nigerians, Chelsea should be the team.

This is a neglect. I know prison seems to be the answer as it is almost the answer to everything in America. But something has to be done fastly. How about scores of Nigerians who die at prayer houses and herbalists shrines that are reported and not reported?.
Nairaland GeneralFather Found Guilty After Praying While Daughter Died by AndreUweh(op): 11:16am On Aug 02, 2009
A father accused of killing his 11 year-old diabetic daughter by praying instead of seeking medical care has been found guilty of second-degree reckless homicide. Dale Neumann, 47, was convicted over the March 23, 2008, death of his daughter, Madeline, from undiagnosed diabetes.
Prosecutors argued he should have rushed the girl to a hospital because she could not walk, talk, eat, or drink. Instead, Madeline died on the floor of the family's rural home as people surrounded her and prayed. Someone called an ambulance when she stopped breathing. Neumann stared at the jury as the verdict was read out yesterday in the courtroom in Wausau, Winsconsin. Defence lawyer Joy Kronenwetter said the verdict would be appealed.
Neumann, who once studied to be a pentecostal minister testified that he believed God would heal his daughter and he never expected her to die. God promises in the Bible to heal, he said.

Ibime:
I dont need to provide that. It is well evidenced and quoted by all minority leaders of the former Eastern region as a reason for their defection to Nigeria. At the time, Niger-Deltans were pandering after the creation of Rivers State. That was the biggest thing on their agenda as they felt marginalised by Enugu. Nigeria was already under Federalism before Ironsi, and they asked Ojukwu for a Rivers State under federalism, not controlled explicitly from Enugu and were refused. There is copious evidence on the internet if you care to look.
This is just a lie that has been repeated several times and in the process, has become a truth. In all the civil war reflections, there have never been any Ijaw who said he was at that meeting with Ojukwu when he refused to yield to minority request of autonomy.
PoliticsRe: Isaac Adaka Boro And Niger Delta Militancy by AndreUweh(m): 10:38pm On Jul 29, 2009
because whilst Ojukwu had pleaded with Nigeria to implement the Aburi Accord, he totally refused to apply the same Aburi Accord to Biafra to allow minorities some semblance of autonomy.

IBIME: Please can you show any literature or any evidence to show that Ojukwu could not allow minorities some semblance of automomy.

zibby:
Fellow Nairalanders, tell me this: do you think it's ever too late to learn your language? I am in the region of 30 years old and have still not learned to speak my mother tongue properly, despite having grown up in Nigeria. Admittedly, I grew up with a lot of English around me, and my parents did not try to teach me my language early in life. Sometimes I think it's too late to learn now, particularly as almost everyone with whom I interract in Nigeria knows English, and the precious few that don't may not be with us for very much longer. I can understand the language to a good extent, but can only speak very haltingly.

My people, what do you say? Is it too late for me? And how would you suggest I go about learning my native tongue now? huh
Zibby: It is not certain what language you wish to learn. I think you have to be specific here. I understand you leave in London. If you are Igbo and needs help in Igbo language. Then, I will recommend an Igbo organisation that has been helping Young Igbo people to learn the language. It is not too late and can never be too late to learn your language.
PoliticsRe: 1960: Were We Ready For Independence? by AndreUweh(m): 11:05pm On Jul 27, 2009
The imperial regime did not hand over power to those whom they usurped. Rather they handed over to the Nationalist. This wrongful hand over in 1960 has Made Nigerians to continue handing over to the wrong people.
Please, this is just my personal reasoning.

sleey:
Ohakim have eaten more than he can chew. I knew all along this was a scheme by pdp. The election in IMO was one by Agbaso (APGA) Then INEC cancelled the result for a fresh election a week after the result was known. OBJ flew to IMO 48hrs before the election & rigged it for Ohakim (PPA) because he felt Ararume was not loyal to him because of the crumbling of his 3rd term bid. Hardly does anyone know Ohakim in IMO state. Even if the result was released accordingly PPA would not be among the top3. Politics is a dirty game, but the pdp have taken it to another rough dimension
With due respect to sleey, the office was zoned to Okigwe. Owerri zone has had Evan Enwerem, Orlu zone had Achike Udenwa and it was the turn of Orlu zone to produce the next governor of Imo state. If Agbaso (APGA) had won the election, why did he accept the cancellation.
Probably, APGA would have nominated a candidate from Okigwe zone.

The goal of the Igbo Youths UK is to promote Igbo culture in the UK and to foster togetherness amongst youths of Igbo origin etc. As a result, we have Igbo teachings, for example this month's topic was on how to interprete the clock in Igbo language. The seconds, minutes, the hours etc. During the cultural presentation, we looked into marriage in traditional Igbo societies as potrayed in Things Fall Apart. Members as well went home with free copies of that Achebe's wondrous work. August will also be fully loaded.
Last month, we had a sports day which featured all sorts of games and music in sports. This was held at Finsbury Park, North London. On that day, as at 5pm, the association recorded 312 people in attendance. Some were not Igbo. Our programmes is being fancied by NdiIgbo and others.

Your contributions are noted. However, we will be letting the founding fathers down if we change the name. This association is 11 years old now. In  actuality, the founding fathers called it 'Igbo Cultural Support Network (icsn.co.uk) AKA Igbo Youths. At the 10th anniversary celebration of the association, members reiterated the need to preserve the name in its original version.
Even the Arewa forum of Northern Nigeria has not changed the name Arewa which is Hausa regardless they have non-Hausa members.
But the issue is, do we admit the Kalabari and Ijo, whom have been craving to join the Igbo Youths?.

Abagworo.
The Ikwerre youths are playing prominent roles in the Igbo Youths UK. In fact, one of our executive members is an Ikwerre girl from Rebisi.
The isssue here is about the Kalabari and Ijaw youths who have been attracted by our programmes and organisational capabilities.

I am an executive member of the Igbo youths UK. This is a sociocultural organisation of Young Igbos in the UK. It comprises of Igbo from the South south and South east. Currently, the president is from Anioma, while a Rebisi girl is an executive member as well. We have a Kalabari who is a member because her mum is Igbo.
But the issue at hand is about the full-fledged Kalabaris and Ijaws who have declared their intentions to be part of our laudable organisation. We might have been an Igbo youth organisation but our programmes appeals to non-Igbo youths as well. For example, our July meet centered on the novel-Things Fall Apart. A dvd of TFA was shown. The aspect that was shown was a traditional marriage of the Umuofian society. It featured Justice Esiri as Obierika and Okonkwo's best friend. Her daughter was the bride in that movie. Afterwards, free copies of the novel were distributed to members. The Ijaws and Kalabaris were there as observers and now they intend to join. This happens every second sunday of each month and the venue is in Blackfriars Road SE1 London.
 IT IS REAL.

The Ikwerres, Etches, Ogbas, Ndonis who are in the same Rivers state with them are members of the association. Should we open the doors for them to come in?.
