That said, I don’t entirely blame ladies who end up in hookup — many are simply trying to survive and take care of themselves. But let’s be real: survival shouldn’t mean normalizing hookup as if it’s a sustainable or admirable path. Saying “at least it’s better than kidnapping or armed robbery” sets the bar far too low. Our society should be pushing for opportunities that give young women (and men) dignity, independence, and a future they can be proud of. Yes, hookup might seem like the lesser evil compared to violent crimes, but it still comes with long-term risks — health-wise, emotionally, and morally. I hear your point, but I don’t fully agree. Greed is part of it, yes, but it’s not the whole story. The environment today is very different from what our parents and grandparents faced. Back then, there were still some safety nets, communal support, and opportunities tied to integrity. Now, the pressure is heavier—social media glamorizes wealth, and society rewards “success” without asking how it was made. Many people aren’t just chasing greed, they’re trying to survive, or at least avoid being seen as “failures.” So while the older generation may have endured with honour, the system has shifted. The pressure to live soft often leaves young people chasing appearances instead of building real financial stability. Comfort today without planning for tomorrow can easily become hardship later. 2. Hookup Culture and Emotional Costs Yes, casual relationships sound freeing, but they can also leave people emotionally drained. Deep down, most humans crave connection and loyalty. Constant hookups may satisfy the body, but do they truly satisfy the heart? A generation chasing freedom might also be quietly battling loneliness. 3. Tradition Isn’t Always the Enemy While older generations may seem out of touch, not all their values are outdated. Marriage, family, and community have historically provided Nigerians with a safety net during hard times. Completely discarding these structures may leave many young people isolated when challenges come. 4. Balance Over Extremes Soft life and hookup culture shouldn’t be demonized — but they also shouldn’t replace long-term thinking. From DM I currently have a remote job that pays over ₦500k (Monday to Friday only). The good part is, my boss usually comes online in the afternoons, so I have my mornings free and still get some personal time. Recently, I received another offer for a restaurant manager role that pays ₦250k. The job is six days a week with one off-day, plus daily feeding and HMO after six months. Transport to the place will cost about ₦1k daily. I also have a young family of two, and my wife is running her own business. Because of the current situation in the country, I’m tempted to take on the restaurant job alongside my remote work. But I’m not sure if it’s the right move. First, the actions of “Ms Golf” are clearly criminal if the allegations are true. Extorting money through sex tapes is not only illegal but also deeply manipulative. That said, the fact that so many monks were involved points to a much bigger problem inside the religious order itself. If monks — who are meant to live celibate, disciplined lives — were so easily compromised, it suggests that moral decay and lack of accountability within the institution have left them vulnerable. This shouldn’t just be seen as a “woman seduced monks” scandal. It’s a reminder that when spiritual leaders fail to uphold the values they preach, the entire faith community suffers. And when institutions don’t create strong checks and balances, they open the door to exploitation. At the end of the day, both the alleged blackmailer and the monks who broke their vows have a share of responsibility.
