Religion / Why Is Sunday A Special Day For Christians? by Antimandatethie(m): 10:01am On May 07, 2023
The greatest event in human history occurred on Sunday. Jesus rose from the grave
1on the first day of the week, which is the New Testament term for Sunday . “Now
when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary
Magdalene” (Mark 16:9).
Jesus rose from the dead on Sunday!
Later that day He appeared to Cleopas and another disciple when He joined them as
they were walking to the village of Emmaus. At first they were prevented from
recognizing Him as He explained Scriptures that had predicted the death and
resurrection of Christ. “Then they drew near to the village where they were going,
and He indicated that He would have gone farther. But they constrained Him, saying,
‘Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.’ And He went in to
stay with them. Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took
bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened and
they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight” (Luke 24:28-31). When He broke
bread, Jesus allowed them to recognize Him.
Although it was late, they immediately returned to Jerusalem “and found the eleven
and those who were with them gathered together, saying, ‘The Lord is risen indeed,
and has appeared to Simon!’ And they told about the things that had happened on
the road, and how He was known to them in the breaking of bread” (Luke 24:33-35).
Jesus breaking bread with the disciples is reminiscent of the institution of the Lord’s
supper and anticipates its later observance by Christians on the first day of the week.
While they were together, Jesus appeared among them: “Then, the same day at
evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the
disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and
said to them, ‘Peace be with you’” (John 20:19).
“After eight days,” which would be the next Sunday (since the starting day was also
counted), Jesus stood in their midst again while they were assembled (John 20:26).
Thus the Holy Spirit specifically states that Jesus rose from the dead on the first day
of the week, and also that Jesus appeared to the disciples when they were
assembled on the first day of the week.
Except for the creation of light (Genesis 1:3-5), during four thousand years of Biblical
history, the first day of the week is never mentioned. But the Holy Spirit emphasizes
that Jesus rose on the first day of the week (Matthew 28:1; Mark 16:2, 9; Luke 24:1;
2John 20:1, 19) .
The death, burial and resurrection of Jesus, and the testimony of those who
experienced these events, form the foundation of the Christian faith. Paul wrote: “For
I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins
according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third
day according to the Scriptures, and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve.
After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater
part remain to the present, but some have fallen asleep. After that He was seen by
James, then by all the apostles. Then last of all He was seen by me also, as by one
born out of due time” (1 Corinthians 15:3-cool.
Sunday is a special day for Christians because of memorable events on that day!
The Holy Spirit came on Sunday!
Sunday was the day on which the Holy Spirit came upon the apostles (Acts 1:cool and
the church was established (Acts 2:47). These events occurred on Pentecost after
Jesus returned to His Father (Acts 2:1). Pentecost was celebrated on the day after the
seventh sabbath after the Passover (Leviticus 23:15, 16), thus on a Sunday.
The first Christians assembled on Sunday.
In the New Testament, Christians came together on the first day of the week to
remember Jesus, as He had asked them to do, by dividing a loaf among themselves
and drinking from the cup. This was referred to as “breaking bread.”
“Now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread,
Paul, ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until
midnight” (Acts 20:7).
This passage informs us when New Testament Christians assembled (on Sunday) and
why they assembled (to partake of the Lord’s supper).
With regard to how the Lord’s supper should be observed, Paul refers to its institution
by Jesus (Matthew 26:26-28; Mark 14:22-24; Luke 22:19-20). “For I received from the
Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which
He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said,
‘Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.’ In
the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new
covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.’ For as
often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He
comes” (1 Corinthians 11:23-26).
The first Christians “continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in
3the breaking of bread, and in prayers” (Acts 2:42). Christians today do likewise .
The first day of the week is the Lord’s day.
4In Revelation 1:10 John says: “I was in the spirit on the Lord’s Day .” An unusual
grammatical form is used here. The only other place in the New Testament where the
possessive form of “Lord” is used is in 1 Corinthians 11:20 in connection with “the
Lord’s supper” which was observed on the first day of the week.
This distinctive expression “the Lord’s day” is found in early church history as a
designation for the first day of the week and is presently the common name for
Sunday in Greece.
The Didache, for example, written between 70 and 120 AD, states in section 14:1: “But
5having assembled on ‘the Lord’s day’ , [the day] of the Lord, you must break bread
and give thanks” (Translated from Greek by RD).
Many people view Sunday as their day, a day on which they can do whatever they
like! But for Christians, the first day of the week is the Lord’s day, a day of assembly
with other Christians to remember and worship their Lord!
The Christian assembly may not be neglected.
Because Jesus asked them to do so, Christians come together on the first day of each
week to encourage one another and to celebrate His resurrection. This is not to be
neglected. “And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works,
not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but
exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day
approaching” (Hebrews 10:24, 25).
On Sunday a collection was held.
That a Christian was to give “as he may prosper” on the first day of the week
confirms that the regular Christian assembly was on Sunday. “Now concerning the
collection for the saints, as I have given orders to the churches of Galatia, so you
must do also: On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside,
storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come” (1 Corinthians
16:1, 2).
This was not just a local arrangement because Paul gave the same orders to other
6churches .
This was not done at home as some claim, because then there would be no collection
at all and why would it need to be on Sunday? Also, there would then be collections
when Paul came, which he wanted to avoid.
7On the first day of the week a collection was taken .
Sunday is not a sabbath.
For Christians Sunday is a special day of worship. They assemble to break bread on
that day, but the first day of the week is never called a sabbath in the Scriptures.
Jews who became Christians were allowed to continue observing the sabbath (see
Romans 14:5, 6). There is nothing wrong with resting on Saturday! But sabbath
observance was never a requirement for Christians.
When certain Jewish Christians insisted that Christians had to keep the law of Moses,
this was rejected by the Holy Spirit (Acts 15:28, 29).
Paul specifically states that one is not to be judged with regard to sabbath-keeping:
“So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or
sabbaths, which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of
8Christ” (Colossians 2:16, 17) .
Let us worship according to the New Covenant.
Much New Testament instruction is given by prescriptive example rather than by legal
definition. A prescriptive example is a normative example, one that is intended to be
followed.
How we are to worship under the New Covenant is made known partially by
commandment and partially by examples.
Observance of the Lord’s supper, for instance, is commanded by Christ: “Do this in
remembrance of me” (Luke 22:19). “This” in the command is defined by example.
In telling the Christians at Corinth how to observe the Lord’s supper, Paul simply cites
the example (1 Corinthians 11:23-26).
When Christians are to assemble to partake of the supper is also defined by example.
The foundation is laid by the many references to the first day of the week in
connection with the resurrection of Jesus, including an example of breaking bread. It is
specifically stated that Christians assembled on the first day of the week to break
bread at Troas (Acts 20:7), and that Sunday is the day of assembly is further
substantiated by a command that Christians are to give on the first day of the week
(1 Corinthians 16:1, 2). This normative example of the New Covenant was also
9followed in early Church history .
Why is Biblical instruction regarding Sunday often ignored or misapplied?
Although most people in Christendom assemble on Sunday, very few observe the
Lord’s supper each week and in the manner prescribed. What is required to
understand and correctly apply Biblical teaching?
Examples are powerful. That is why much use is made of examples as an instructional
device, in both the Old and the New Testaments.

Locked in foreign countries: Ekweremadu joins infamous list of Hushpuppi, Buruji, Invictus

Ekweremadu was on Friday sentenced to about 10 years imprisonment, alongside his wife, Beatrice on the charge of conspiracy to traffic organs.

A former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu has joined the list of notable Nigerians that have either been locked up in foreign jails in the past or are still serving jail terms.

The Nigerian longest-serving deputy senate president is now in the company of notable Nigerians that have tested or still testing prisons on foreign soil.

He is in the company of fraudsters, politicians, and even acclaimed “freedom fighters”.

Obinwanne Okeke

Okeke was on the cover of the prestigious Forbes Magazine, where he was listed as one of the 30 under 30. A special editorial that highlights people under 30 that have accomplished significant feats.

Months later, he was nabbed for $11 million fraud and was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by a District Court of Eastern District of Virginia, USA. Okeke, popularly known as Invictus Obi, is still serving his prison term.

Hushpuppy

Rahman Abbas, a popular Instagram celebrity, known as Hushpuppy is serving a sentence of 11 years in the US.

Hushpuppy, now convicted as a notorious fraudster, was sentenced by United States District Judge Otis Wright II, who also ordered him to pay $1,732,841 in restitution to two fraud victims.

James Ibori

The former Governor of Delta State, has a record of being convicted twice by the UK government.

He was reportedly convicted in 1991 for stealing from a store where he was working.

Ibori, who served as governor of Delta State from 1999 to 2007, was arrested in Dubai in 2010 and extradited to the UK.

He was convicted in the UK and was later released in 2016, from where he subsequently returned to Nigeria with a heroic welcome.

Diepreye Alamieyeseigha

The former Bayelsa State governor was arrested by the Metropolitan police in September 2005.

Alamieyeseigha, who was governor of the oil-rich state from 1999 until his impeachment in 2005, was being arraigned by the UK government but he subsequently jumped bail.

UK authorities seized $1.5million cash stashed in his London home.

They also seized $2.7 million in a bank account at the Royal Bank of Scotland and $15 million in London real estate.

He was subsequently jailed in Nigeria but was later granted a presidential pardon by ex-president Goodluck Jonathan.

Mr Alamieyeseigha died in 2015.

Sunday Adeyemo

The self-acclaimed leader of the Yoruba Nation also served a considerable amount of time in prison in the Benin Republic.

Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, fled Nigeria following a raid of his House by the Nigerian secret police, the DSS.

He was reportedly arrested by the Republican police while trying to move to Germany. He was arrested at Cardinal Bernardin International Airport in Cotonou in 2021.

He was released in 2022 on the condition that he must not leave Cotonou and must not hold any rallies.

Kashamu Buruji

Kashamu, who served as a senator in the 8th Assembly, was reportedly arrested in the UK in 1998 after trying to enter the country with $230,000 in cash.

In 2003, a British court refused a US request to extradite Kashamu, citing uncertainty about his identity. He was then freed from prison where he had been for five years after being found carrying $230,000 when he was arrested.

The late senator spent years fighting against an attempt to extradite him to the US.

Henry Okah

Henry, the younger brother of the leader of MEND, Charles Okah, has been in prison in South Africa since 2013.

He was handed a 24-year prison term in connection with the 2010 Independence Day bombing.

The South African court convicted Okah on 13 charges of terrorism.

Politics / APC’s Victory Confirms Buhari Performed Well – Garba Shehu by Antimandatethie(m): 8:54pm On May 04, 2023
Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu has described the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 general elections in Nigeria as proof of the performance of the Buhari administration.

Garba Shehu made this assertion on Thursday in his office in Abuja when he was appointed Grand Patron of the Arewa Young Lawyers’ Forum (AYLF).

Shehu asserted that the triumph of President-elect Bola Tinubu, Vice President- elect Kashim Shettima and governorship candidates had established the APC as a “dominant national party.”

He noted that an opposition victory in February and March would have been a career-ending moment for many APC leaders.

According to him: APC victory in the election is a watershed moment for the Buhari government, its orientation, its programmes and projects.

“In the hands of the opposition, many of the laudable programmes of the Buhari administration would have been sabotaged or unimplemented.”

Shehu added that Tinubu/Shettima’s victory not only ensures an orderly transfer of power but also the safety of the policies of the outgoing government.

Politics / It’s Bridge Building – Tinubu Speaks On Visit To Rivers by Antimandatethie(m): 7:55pm On May 03, 2023
President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu said his commissioning of flyover in Rivers State is a bridge building endeavour orchestrated by Nyesom Wike, the state governor.

The former governor of Lagos State, Tinubu billed for inauguration on May 29, disclosed this on Wednesday while commissioning the Rumuokwuta/Rumuola Flyover in Rivers state.

According to him, the contribution of Wike to his victory at the poll cannot be overemphasized.

“Outside the construction of the flyover, this is another way of building bridges which cannot be overstated. So, from the standpoint of your character, I stand to fulfil the promise I made during the campaign”, he said.

Earlier Wike said the flyover is the Twelfth commissioned by his administration while appreciating Tinubu for honouring his invitation.

Wike declared a Public Holiday to welcome Tinubu.

Politics / Sense Of Entitlement Syndrome In Nigeria Too Much – Ngige by Antimandatethie(m): 11:23am On May 01, 2023
The Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, says “the sense of entitlement syndrome in the country is too much”.

Ngige stated this on Monday while fielding questions on Arise Television’s Morning Show program.

The Minister’s statement is coming on the heels of threat by the health workers to embark on strike following a proposed bill in the National Assembly to curb brain drain in the health sector.

Recall that the House of Representatives, worried by the imminent threat of brain drain in the nation’s health sector, had proposed a bill to address the crisis.

Sponsored by Ganiyu Johnson, representing Oshodi-Isolo Federal Constituency 2 of Lagos State in the House of Representatives, it seeks to amend the Medical and Dental Practitioners Act to prevent Nigerian-trained medical or dental practitioners from being granted full licences until they have worked in the country for at least five years.

The bill has continued to attract opposition from healthcare practitioners.

However, Ngige said that people borrow money to study medical courses in most countries, which they pay back after graduation.

He claimed that it is the reason they don’t leave their countries unlike their counterparts in Nigeria.

Ngige said, “It’s left for the education ministry and universities to fashion out what they can do where we now train people free of charge because they pay N48,000 to N50,000 a session for medical training. Whereas their counterpart abroad pays $100,000 in the US and £78,000 in the UK.

“They borrowed the money from the bank and when they graduate as medical doctors, they are paying back. That’s why they’re not even leaving their country.

“And here we train you free.
I obtained that free training. In fact my own I was even on scholarship. Why won’t I be patriotic to serve my country?
“So you asked that the bill taken to the National Assembly by a member be removed that it is one of the reasons you want to go on strike?
“How can a government tell a member who has done a private member’s bill, it’s not even an executive bill, to withdraw it?
You now enlist it as one of the conditions to go on strike. That’s absurd.

The sense of entitlement syndrome is too much in this country.

Politics / I’ll Go All Ways To Get Back My Mandate – Peter Obi by Antimandatethie(m): 10:59am On May 01, 2023
The Labour Party, LP, presidential candidate, Peter Obi has reiterated that he will explore all ways to ensure that he reclaim his alleged stolen mandate.

Obi stated this while speaking during a Labour Party stakeholders’ meeting in Awka.

The former Anambra state governor vowed to explore all legal options in ensuring he reclaims his mandate.

Recall that Obi came third in the February 25th presidential election.

The Labour Party presidential candidate was defeated by the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Since the declaration of Tinubu as the winner of the poll by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Obi had insisted he won the election, as headed to court to contest the outcome of the poll.

In a tweet via his verified Twitter about the meeting, Obi stated,

“Earlier, I interacted with the Anambra State Labour Party Stakeholders in Awka.

The meeting was quite animated and constructive.

Part of our discussions centred on the way forward for the party.

“I reassured them of my readiness to go all the way, explore every available legal option to ensure that we get our mandate back.

I appreciated all their support so far, as I assured them of mine.”

Politics / 2023 Election: PDP, LP, APC In Fresh Tirade, Lawyer Seeks Sanctions by Antimandatethie(m): 10:20am On May 01, 2023
Two months after the 2023 presidential election, the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and his Labour Party, LP, counterpart, Peter Obi are insisting they won the polls.

They are not left alone in the controversy, as the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, is also dishing out media statements with counterclaims on the outcome of the polls.

The developments are viewed as troubling considering that the cases are subjects of litigation.

President-elect, Bola Tinubu is set to be inaugurated as Nigeria’s new leader this May 29.

But his two major challengers, Atiku and Obi are not giving up on their claims that they, not Tinubu, won the election.

A few days ago, President Muhammadu Buhari said the opposition lost the election owing to overconfidence.

He was quoted as saying:
“They were already telling their foreign backers that they would defeat the APC.

Our Party blended confidence with caution, we worked hard and won. Now, their overconfidence is creating more problems for the opposition than anyone else.

They are finding it hard to convince those who supported them from outside why they are unable to beat us.

“A combination of over confidence, complacency and bad tactical moves made them lose, plain and clear.

This has created more problems in their camp. Why did they fail to remove us?” Also, Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, had charged the opposition to stop their endless groping over the last election because they lost woefully.

But the PDP has fired back, maintaining that Atiku won the election.

National Publicity Secretary of the opposition party, Debo Ologunagba, said results from polling units showed that Atiku won the presidential election, but the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, announced Tinubu as winner.

He said, “The PDP insists that its candidate, Atiku clearly won the February 25, 2023 Presidential election, as shown from the actual votes cast at the Polling Units across the country.

“The PDP describes the subjudice claims by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, that the opposition lost the election, as yet another in the series of attempts by the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Executive to bully and blackmail the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal.

“Nigerians are aware that by the authentic results obtained from the Polling Units, Atiku Abubakar and not the APC candidate met all the conditions stipulated for the winning of the Presidential election.”

Peter Obi of the Labour Party also used the opportunity of a stakeholders’ meeting of the party to re-echo his stand that he was the winner of the election.

Obi, who came third in the election, said he would use every available legal means to recover his alleged stolen mandate.

Obi wrote after the Awka meeting:
“Earlier, I interacted with the Anambra State Labour Party Stakeholders in Awka.

The meeting was quite animated and constructive.

Part of our discussions centred on the way forward for the party.

“I reassured them of my readiness to go all the way, explore every available legal option to ensure that we get our mandate back.

I appreciated all their support so far, as I assured them of mine. PO.”

With processes exchanged by all the parties, the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal is expected to resume hearing of all the cases filed by the different political parties.

Five political parties are before the Tribunal seeking to invalidate Tinubu’s victory.

They include the PDP, the LP, the Allied People’s Movement, the Action Alliance and the Action People’s Party.

In the results declared by the INEC, Tinubu polled 8,794,726 votes ahead of PDP’s Atiku who got 6,984,520 votes, while Peter Obi of the LP came third with 6,101,533 votes.

Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) finished fourth with 1,496,687 votes.

A legal luminary, Barr Olu Omotayo said the action of the politicians after the presidential election is alien.

The lawyer told DAILY POST that he had expected the Judiciary as well as the Nigerian Bar Association to take decisive action.

“What is happening now is very strange; we never saw it before, but this particular year is very different.

“People who have their matters pending before the court are still going to the press saying one thing or the other, to likely prejudice the outcome.

“When a matter is before the court, you don’t comment on it, so that you give the judges some free hand; you don’t put them under some form of fear.

“It is unfortunate and because of the weak institution, the court is not as active as in those days; if not, the office of the CJN would have been able to say something about it and warned them.

“The office of the CJN would have directed the political parties to stop all those things since their matter is in court.

But the courts are not saying anything.

The CJN who is supposed to be the protector of the courts is not taking action on this.

“Even the bar also, the Nigerian Bar Association, you see lawyers also who know how things are supposed to be, you see them making inflammatory statements, even making press statements on what is pending before the tribunal, very senior lawyers; so the lawyers have to be blamed; they are not advising their clients that this matter is pending.

“It is unfortunate that Senior Advocates, very senior lawyers are also making statements in a pending matter before the tribunal and it should stop,” Omotayo counselled.
