onegig: Anyone who has followed this would know Russia was just giant on paper with nukes and extreme corruption. They just think throwing bodies and mass of equipment is what wins war in the 21st century.
Look at the best car they have been able to produce? The Lada, absolute contraption like something from 1930.
Hopefully this tells war should show Nigerian Politicians to stop Investing billions into reviving Ajaokuta, that thing was a junk built by Russians. 2 Trillion naira would not bring that ish back. Rather cut our losses and scrap the metal and move on.
Hopefully all these fan boys of Russia mouthing off here would go get some work and reposition their lives. Wish Nairaland would just ban those trolls. It's corruption that killed Ajaokuta steel, not Russia. Give that steel to Dangote and wash it co.es back to life. Anything your government touches dies in corruption. Blame your government, not Russia. |

LordReed: I think warships should be mainly used for interdiction that is to prevent an area from being used. As Ukraine had no Navy ships the Russian ship had no real purpose other than a show of force which made it even more of a sitting duck. I think you are very correct. The ships were just blockading Ukraine from all corners. |

texazzpete: Bad weather + night + sea skimming cruise missile = potent combo.
But keep telling yourself the Russians are so incompetent that they allowed fire to break out and go out of control…on one of their major military assets Guy, incidents happens. A US Navy ship has been deliberately set on fire by one of their own, and the incompetency of the remaining crew made it impossible to save the ship, which the navy was forced to decommission. You think warship is like ordinary house? That thing is loaded with fumes, chemicals and liquids that are highly resistant to fire. Not to mention bombs and avionics that burns like hell. |

ocelot2006: On the highlighted paragraph, I think you're wrong. Russia never had any intention of taking over the whole Ukrainian territory from the very start. You only have to look at the number of troops involved (200,000 only) from the onset, and even the type of troops. Ukraine is MASSIVE. In my opinion, decapitating the leadership at Kyiv was indeed an objective, but that changed from week 2/3, hence the change in strategy. If the Russians are able to liberate the remaining Donbass territories from the administrative line of control to Russia's western borders, then they've achieved one of their objectives. If they're able to capture Dnipro, destroy the Ukrainian forces in the Cauldron and hold off any counter attack from western Ukraine, then it's another plus for them as they would've successfully divided Ukraine between East and West. Throw in the Naval blockade, and Ukraine will honestly be screwed economically. The size of the land the Russians have besieged already in the east of the country is as big as the UK, and they did it with just 150,000 troops and not all of them are involved at the same time in the fight. A good proportion of that rotates from their base in Belarus. |

You also claim ukrain is week? You really mean a country producing almost half it's weapon is week compare to a country buying all it's weapon? You must have been misled out of this world. Are you comparing ukrain that's being armed every minutes to Iraq which doesn't have any alternative??
I think you don't have a shame at all by regurgitation what's MSM is telling you, yes, Russia has not taking a city at all but what's the use of a city without friendly citizen? They can't bear to bombard ukrain like US does in all it's warscos they are faternal brothers. You can check how many people were killed in the first week of US campaign in Iraq, Yugoslavia, Afghanistan and Libya and compare to casualties of civilians in Ukraine at present. So much for world power, Kherson and Mariupol are now under Russian control. |

And as for Ukraine, they will get support from US and EU for the rebuilding process. You can take this statement to the Bank! Don't get your dream high. Nobody will build Ukraine for Ukraine. They are just using Zelensky as a pawn. Once Russia succeeded in splitting the country, which is what this phase two is looking at, the Ukraine you know today won't be the same tomorrow. And the west will continue their business as usual. |

ocelot2006: Hmmm.....I must say that this is a major embarrassment for the Russian Military and the Russian Federation at large if the story of the Black Sea Fleet Flagship sunk. The fleet's FLAGSHIP??! So what happens when the donated Harpoons are fully activated? There are so many questions that need to be answered. What happened to the ship's defence systems or that of other ships within the fleet in combat?
This probably won't affect cruise missile strikes and the Naval blockade of Ukraine's coastline will still hold, but any amphibious operations against Odessa are now out of the question for now, unless Russian Navy takes out those Ukranian Coastal Defence systems of Neptune and Harpoon Anti-ship missiles. And I'm willing to bet that they're on mobile launchers.
When this war ends, the Russians will have to sit down, assess their military capabilities, and invest in upgrades, tactics, and strategy from the very bottom to the very top.
Anyway, the Ukrainians have clearly won this bout. This is a major blackeye for Russia. You're right, is embarrassing for them and they really need to reaccess their choice of inventory. From day one of the SMO, the Russians brought in and relied majorly on old and outdated Soviet era hardware like T72s and old ships at the forefront. Only on few occassion you see them introducing some of their latest tech for 'hit and leave' target. The logic behind this is that this is a special ops, which to me is bad logic cause they must have envisaged that NATO AWACS and E-3 are aiding UAF with real-time intelligence data. I honestly would have wanted the Ukrainian claim to be true but the facts speaks otherwise. Is one to ten that some two Neptune missiles could easily beat all the defense mechanism of the ship and the surrounding ships while inflight to reach it's target without any interception from any of the other ships or the ship itself, giving the huge array of defense capabilities in those ships? The math doesn't just add up. Either somebody (5th columnists) in the Kremlin wants this war over with quickly by trying to provoke a huge response from Russia as was the case with Belgorod, or there is sheer incompetent among the crew. Whatever, Ukraine has the right to bask in the moment although it doesn't change anything on the frontlines. But, like you noted, the Russians have to sit their butt down and declare this SMO as an outright war, and let the likes of S-400, T-14s, T-90SMs, Thermobarics flame throwers, Su-75s, T-60 blackjacks long range bombers, Subs and the more modern Frigates and Corvettes do their job more regularly. It's folly trying to play 'moderate' when already tagged a war criminal. Using Ukraine to do away with old hardware and as a kind of testing ground is costing lives and integrity also. The main problem here is that nobody really knows what's Russia's real endgame in Ukraine per present. |

texazzpete: A floating mine, 60 miles off the coast?
Not sure how you can claim this proves anything about Russian ‘honesty’. They couldn’t deny anything na. Not when Ukrainian sources say it was hit by Neptune missile, or when the Morse code for help was being broadcast openly. Or when satellites will provide pictures that will show the sunk vessel. I said 'probably' cause there are floating mines reported there. You can research it, but that doesn't mean it's definite. Ukraine did nothing here. They just jumped at the opportunity to claim responsibility. |

texazzpete: 1. Ukraine never claimed they sunk the ship.
2. The ‘people who own it’ are Russians who are well known for lying.
In the other thread you were claiming the ship sailed on its own power to Sevastopol. Now you’re on board with the claim that it sank while being towed Ukraine said they sunk the ship, that it capsized. Both sides in war are guilty of propanganda. Everyone knows that except those who are too emotionally inept. In the other thread, I based my claim on US own intelligence report, which link I posted. I reassessed that formal Intel based on the new Intel that it was lost while being towed, which also corroborate the first US Intel that it did not sank from the word go as claimed by the Ukrainians. At the end, the ship was lost, and that's the button line. |

Ukraine did not sink the ship. Even the US said they cannot verify the Ukrainian claim. That ship probably ran into a floating mine or had some internal incidents that led to the explosion. Ukraine lied it sunk it from the word go, but how do you tow a ship that is already sunk?
Whatever, the ship was lost on its way being towed to port. So a loss is a loss. At least, it proves the Russians are more honest with their losses compared to Ukraine who claimed to have only lost 1000+ soldiers since the war began. And I guess they have not lost any plane, ship or machine. |

Going from ‘fake news’ to ‘it’s just a scratch’ and now the cold acceptance.
Too bad sha It's only an emotional ediot that sees factual reality and replace it with emotional reality like most of the kids here. The people who own the ship says it sunk on its way being towed to port, what else do you expect me to say? Ukraine said they sunk it from the word go; how do you tow a ship that sunk already? So either way, it proved the Ukrainian initial claim was a lie, but it doesn't change the fact that the ship was later lost. A loss is a loss. And that is one very important ship. |

omis1: russia already claimed they are gonna tow it,how do u tow a ship that’s still functioning,or u don’t believe Russia media again? Their initial assessment may have suggested to them they would have to tow it. But at last, it made it to port on its own. Even if the ship was towed, it still nullified the lie told by Ukraine that it sunk the ship. You don't tow a ship if it is sunk. You can only tow a damaged or faulty ship. So either way, the Ukrainian claim is a lie. Do you agree? |
