So what could cause premature battery sulfation:

Undercharging: Charging system troubles that manifest in the inability to properly charge the vehicle's battery

Chronic/persistent discharging without immediately recharging: Switching the engine off, but keeping the electronics on consistently in effect running down the battery

Overcharging:
evaporation of the liquid such that it no longer covers the cell plates from overcharging

Inclement weather: evaporation of the liquid such that it no longer covers the cell plates from overheating courtesy of inclement weather

Fully charged battery not hooked up to a desulfating battery charger

It is probably the system that sucks... Having drivers work everyday travelling long distances; from Uyo to Lagos, Lagos to Abuja, Port Harcourt to Abuja etc. everyday by the same drivers? shocked

Totally unsustainable. They have to change the system. Humans not robots.

But hey! They are amongst the best, but have to do more regarding drivers' welfare and work-life balance.
This is the bane of the problem.

With a plethora of checkpoints and other mishaps, they arrive late and are usually up by 4am.

A lot of them also spend time to unwind with the opposite sex

How much time do they have to sleep?

In our last post, we spoke about the State of charge, the opposite of that is the State of discharge.

We also spoke of the importance of awareness of this information.

This is relevant because a battery generates electricity through chemical reactions, and the state of charge or state of discharge is actually a mirror of the chemical state of the battery.

You don't want to keep running your battery into a state of discharge that impedes or inhibits or irreversibly makes the battery incapable of storing charge or storing as much charge as it was designed to carry...you want to use it in such a way that it fails due to age along and not due to misuse or inappropriate use or unintended use.

To do that you need to be aware of its state of charge and try your best to keep it as fully charged as opposed to as fully discharged as possible.

In a country where the mechanics rarely own multimeters, and technicians that do are often priced above the capacity of the average earner to patronize, it pays to do some level of DIY.

What is worse, mechanics tend to diagnose battery problems without the use of a multimeter, which makes me wonder how they can tell the state of discharge when they have no tools to measure the same.

This is how a digital multimeter looks like, see picture 1

A multimeter will help you determine the state of charge of your vehicle.

How useful is this information, did you plan to turn the accessory ignition circuit on to charge your phone overnight? Can the battery do that and have enough juice left to start the car the following morning, some mathematics aided by data collected from a multimeter will determine if that is a wise move, or you will end up having to beg the neighbors for a jumpstart, or make a trip to the nearby battery charger.

Fact checkers...a voltage test is not conclusive/decisive test for the state of a battery, it should be considered a working test

The Reserve capacity (RC) is important in high heat climate as it helps to power the vehicle's electrical system if the alternator fails.

Moreover, heat will cause the liquid to evaporate as batteries contain liquid thus shortening the battery life span.

Low fluid levels will damage the internal structure of the battery hence the battery has to be well positioned in the vehicle to ensure the liquid doesn't spill.
Good information about RC.

I am glad you have touched on heat and low fluid levels and battery positioning.

We are gradually getting there.

Sometimes even if the battery is well positioned it still spills fluid....

Even in America, its sun belt region is known
to suffer from premature battery failures

The aim of this thread is to share tips and trips for extracting the longest possible life from batteries in such adverse conditions

While the vehicle manual often provides the vehicle manufacturer's recommended battery.

Generally, below are some tips to help make the right choice:

The Battery group size that will best fit the physical dimensions of the vehicle. Many vehicles can accommodate more than one group size from 35ah to 75ah. However, some vehicles battery space, i.e. Honda SUV - 2010 and newer - can only use 35ah to 45ah battery but dubious retailers do deceive unsuspecting vehicle owners that they have customized 75ah in the same group size as 45ah.

Amps hours (AH) is the unit of measure for a battery’s electrical capacity when continuously discharged over a period of 20 hours before the voltage fails to 10.5V.

Cold cranking amps (CCA) is critical for good cranking ability. It's the number of amps a battery can support for 30 seconds at a temperature of -18 degrees Celsius until the battery voltage drops to unusable levels.

Reserve capacity (RC) helps to power the vehicle's electrical system if the alternator fails. It identifies how many minutes the battery can supply ample power without falling below the minimum voltage needed to run the vehicle.

In general, for both CCA and RC, the higher the number the better. It is instructive to state the CCA rating should be an important consideration in choosing a battery in a cold climate; but the CCA is not important in high heat environment (perhaps one of the reasons 'fake & sub-standard' batteries business thrive in Naija).

Futhermore, where a vehicle is used to power other equipment; the type, number of amps to power and hours using the equipment must be taken into consideration when buying the battery.
What's important in a high heat environment?

I appreciate your detailed exposition, it has touched on some issues that I intend to address

Hello AutoElectNG

I have a Toyota Highlander 2004 that has the check engine light and VSC light on. When scanned it had an error code P0016.

The vehicle fuel consumption is very high and when you want to accelerate it stalls sometimes. These are the only two symptoms it has. The engine sounds good and it drives fine apart from when you need to quickly accelerate and it stalls a bit before it picks up.

I got a mechanic to check the timing belt and he claims it's okay and not missing a tooth, also said it aligns. I really don't know what else to do.

Can you help?

6 cylinder? 3MZ FE?

I am very passionate about automotive electronics, electricals and computer systems.

I have invested an inordinate amount of time to study and stay updated on all the above.

If you have ever had to replace an automotive battery in less than 2 years you maybe doing something wrong.

In a best case scenario, you should be able to extract at least 5 years from your battery.

I have been a victim of this as well....perturbed I was, so I decided to research the matter thoroughly.

I will share with you some of my findings.

Stay tuned.

I will post as time permits over the course of the next 10 days, in other words, I am not in a hurry.

You will sure learn a thing or two.

We have solved hundreds of car issues on cartalk remotely.
The issue is dogmatism.

I said it was power steering related.

It turned out not to be pump.

Nonetheless it was still power steering related.

It turned out not to be air bubbles in the reservoir.

It turned out not to be leaks in the system.

It turned out not to be related to the main pressure pipe.

It turned out not to be related to welding of the main pressure pipe.

It wasn't an issue with the power steering pump.

It wasn't a clogged power steering reservoir.

There are so many variables.

A dogmatic position is inflexible, it insists it can be A not B not C not D.

A position that is not dogmatic says it could be A or B or C or D.

That was why I said earlier:

All in all the symptoms point in the direction of the power steering pump and related components not the wheel.

I too have assisted others solve problems remotely, two of such remote solutions in a foreign forum have received 2,500 likes and are still counting.

In no way disparaging remote troubleshooting, but the real solution was found during physical inspection.

In the same way as I have gotten remote troubleshooting tips, which had to be implemented hands-on

This story explains why a thorough physical inspection is a must before deciding how to remediate a problem

Until then every opinion is an educated guess

Which is why a true professional cannot be dogmatic as to the cause of a problem until such an inspection is carried out

Update, thanks to everyone who responded. I changed my fan belt because it worked already. And also aske a mechanic to help buy the pump. However, I say homeboy205 and decided to see his post work. Lo and behold, the same thing he said is what I was having. I already told the mechanic to buy the pump which he bought and not yet fixed. I told the car to him ask him to buy grease and grease the culprit. Voila no more whining sound again. To contribute to the forum I will be giving out the pump to anyone. Thanks all once again.

She asked a question in a general group on WhatsApp.

I responded to the question professionally.

She tagged my response and typed: "you're an idiot"

I replied: "Thanks so much, now that you point my attention to this idiotic part of me, I'll surely work on it, God bless you my dear..."

And the whole place shook. Over 118 people commented and were so surprised by my response. Of course she was terribly bashed to the extent that she left the group.

An hour later she called me to apologise for her stupidity bla bla bla. We became friends.

I handled her premarital counselling sessions.

2days ago (July 15th 2018) on my birthday, she and her husband gave me a gift worth over 1.2million naira.

This was a year after she called me an idiot.

Lessons from it.

1. Your reaction to negative feedbacks or situations shows how mature you are.

2. You have the power of choice whenever anybody does or says anything offensive to you.

3. If someone calls you anything negative and you lose yourself and begin to fight or shout or do anything terrible, you only prove them right.

4. It is better to keep quiet and people think you're a fool than for you to open your mouth and they confirm you're truly a fool.

5. You cannot because the baby pooed in his bath throw the baby away with the bath water.

6. You have the power to win people through your maturity and composure and not through overly being more sanctimonious than the person.

7. Life is all about people. If I had responded to her negatively, I would have lost a friend forever.

8. There are people who are sent to you by God to help your journey in life to be worthwhile, your meeting point might be at a fighting point. Be wise, even when you're angry.

9. She was humble enough to call and apologised. Maybe there's someone you need to reconcile with.

Thanks and God bless you.
I love this story.

I bent a rim but the tire was intact

I guess I owe it to running Light Truck tires

Been in that situation before with P tires, the sidewall was ripped apart
