TravelAmbode Tackles Traffic Challenge Using Outdoor Advertising Solution by autojosh(op): 12:43pm On Jul 16, 2018
Governor Ambode is clearly determined to rid Lagos state of traffic challenges. Moreover, he is willing to use any means necessary.

The latest of innovative strategies the Lagos state government is deploying is the LATIS – Lagos Traffic Information System.

The LATIS – Lagos Traffic Information System – is a solution designed to ease traffic congestion in Lagos state.

This solution is the product of the collaboration between the Lagos state government with JCDecaux Grace Lake.

JCDecaux Grace Lake is the Nigerian Subsidiary for JCDecaux, the No. 1 Outdoor advertising company in the world.

With over 50 years in operations, JCDecaux provides cutting edge outdoor advertising solutions and Sustainable Development projects across the world. The core of their business is the provision of public Service Infrastructure, financed through Advertising.

The Lagos state government’s partnership with JCDecaux Grace Lake has created a first in SSA real time traffic information System called LATIS – Lagos Traffic Information System.

The LATIS – Lagos Traffic Information System infrastructure consists of Traffic Arches and Sensors strategically located at major traffic decision points providing real time traffic updates /route information.

Commuters will receive these information through 20 strategically placed digital screens.

These screens make up the largest digital outdoor network in Africa “Channel Eko”. The perfect platform for any brand to communicate.

In addition to LATIS, JCDecaux Grace Lake will provide a network of Bus Shelters and Automatic Public Conveniences (APCs) at high traffic areas across Lagos state.

Travel3rd Mainland Bridge Will Not Be Closed For 27 Months – Fashola by autojosh(op): 9:35am On Jul 16, 2018

This clarification was made by the minister of Works, Housing and Power Mr Babatubde Fashola.

Fashola said this while speaking on Channels TV Sunrise Daily programme.

He said the three day closure is to enable the contractors to fully access the extent of damages and repairs on the bridge.

Based on the assessment report , a date will thereafter be fixed for the total repair of the almost 30 year bridge.

He disclosed that the bridge will be closed from traffic on the 27th of July 2018 and urge Nigerians to disregard the earlier reports.

He also stated that repair works are going on at the Niger Bridge ,Eko bridge in Lagos and that of Kano simultaneously.

Car TalkRolls-royce Cullinan Vs. Bentley Bentayga: Who’s The King? by autojosh(op):
https://i63.tinypic.com/2yucb61.jpg

Earlier this year, the British automaker, Rolls-Royce unveiled it’s first ever SUV – the Rolls-Royce Cullinan.

The Rolls-Royce Cullinan has become a major rival to the Bentley Bentayga.

Now, let’s have a look at their specifications.

Body Design
The Rolls Royce Cullinan measures 5,341 mm (210 in) in length, 2,164 mm (85 in) in width and stands 1,835 mm (72 in) tall, with a wheelbase of 3,295 mm (130 in).

In comparison, the Bentayga is just 5,140 mm (202 in) long, 1,998 mm (78.6 in) wide, 1,742 mm (68.5 in) tall and its wheelbase measures 2,995 mm (117.9 in).

The Cullinan definitely looks more intimidating than the Bentayga.

Bentley Bentayga

Interior
Considering the dashboard, the Bentley Bentayga seems to take the lead here. The interior of the Bentayga is more conservative. It is also more sporty, looks more cool and luxurious.

On the other hand, the interior of the Cullinan doesn’t look like most modern dashboard designs. That is the interior of the Cullinan is not as wide and luxurious as the Bentayga but seems like Rolls-Royce knows what they are doing.

Bentley Bentayga

Tech Features
The Bentayga has a full-length panoramic sunroof, 8-inch touchscreen display, removable 10.2-inch tablet and even a 1,950 watt sound system from Naim.

On the other hand, the Cullinan comes with a impressive 4-camera system with Panoramic View, Night Vision and Vision Assist, an industry leading 7×3 high-res head-up display and a lot more cutting-edge safety and convenience features.

Price
The Rolls-Royce Cullinan cost $350,000 (N126 million) while the cheaper SUV, Bentayga cost $200,000 (N72 million) start price. These prices do not include shipping and clearing cost.

With their appearnces, it likely that business moguls , corporate executives, and perhaps, politicians, etc would prefer the Rolls-Royce Cullinan, while individuals such as entertainers, will go for the Bentley Bentayga .

TravelStop-over Restaurants Along Inter-state Expressways: 10 Things You Would Observe by autojosh(op): 2:13pm On Jul 11, 2018
https://i68.tinypic.com/2vtumgn.jpg

Traveling by road could be very exhausting. It also comes with a great deal of discomfort – especially when you are traveling in a compact commercial vehicle.

During such trips, there are always requests, by passengers, for the vehicle to stop for an opportunity to pee, or to stretch one’s legs, or simply to survive claustrophobia.

Often, and due to security concerns, drivers of commercial vehicles prefer making these occasional stops only at designated rest areas. These rest areas, or stopover restaurants – situated along major inter-state expressways – offer drivers and passengers facilities that enable them to rest, eat, or refuel without any security concern.

These rest areas are typically a beehive of activities. However, certain elements are peculiar to most of them.

Autojosh presents, “Stop-Over Restaurants Along Inter-state Expressways: 10 Things You Would Observe There”.

https://i68.tinypic.com/1zvslqo.jpg
The DJ/Music Vendor

As soon as you drive into these rest areas, the high volume sounds blasting from huge speakers gets your immediate attention. These speakers belong to the resident DJ/DVD sellers. As many audio materials are played within minutes, in anticipation that one of them would win the interest of the passengers during the brief moments they would be resting from traveling fatigue.

https://i65.tinypic.com/ezegkk.jpg
The fruit sellers

At these rest areas, you find – on display for sale – different types of fruits that are in season. These fresh fruits are typically appealing to the senses. However, if you think that because you are in a rural setup, then you would get these fruits cheap, then you are in for a shocker. The fruit sellers in such places tend to believe that travelers are moneyed people. Their price offers for these fruits are mostly unfriendly to the pocket – costing far more than they are sold in urban setups. However, with a good bargaining skill, you can acquire some of the fruits.

https://i65.tinypic.com/29zeedx.jpg
The “Mai Suya”

As soon as you disembark from your vehicle, to elicit your interest, they offer you a small piece of suya, typically on stick. This antic is necessary in order to lure you to their barbecue stand. They are the “mai suyas” or or Suya sellers

Sometimes, you wonder how they make profit, after giving out so much samples of suya to countless number of travelers, many of whom do not eventually patronize them.

https://i63.tinypic.com/if5ria.jpg
The Newspaper vendor

Journeys could be boring. So passengers look for every opportunity to kill boredom during the trips. The newspaper vendor understand this. So, they set up shops at these rest places.

https://i65.tinypic.com/2qbvm6w.jpg
The paparazzi

These are some young people who are equipped with some camera. These cameras are typically some out-of-dated, low megapixel Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax, Sony camera, etc.

They harass passengers with a proposal to “take them picture”. Peace will elude you during your brief stay at these rest areas unless you firmly decline the proposal of these paparazzi.

https://i65.tinypic.com/2d8jm2b.jpg
Beggars

They are all over the premises. They move from one passengers to the other. They carry out a campaign designed to either emotionally blackmail you for money – or to trade prayers for money.

https://i64.tinypic.com/2s9d5hi.jpg
The Good Samaritans

These set of people – mostly women –approach passengers with printed documents. These documents are made available to prove to passengers that they are certified to collect donations on behalf of some vague orphanage or motherless babies’ home.

https://i68.tinypic.com/2w4fdiw.jpg
The waiting passengers

This set of passengers are typically not interested in the offerings of these rest places. Well, except for, maybe, water or some light snack, they purchase nothing. Instead, they loiter the premises while waiting for the resumption of their journey.

https://i66.tinypic.com/ej0o5.jpg
The Main Restaurants

The restaurants offer different kinds of cooked meals and snacks. Typically, in order to lure patronage, they provide free toilet facilities for stopover passengers. They also have seats for passengers who are waiting to resume their trips, and who might not necessarily be interested in patronizing the restaurants for food or drinks.

https://i64.tinypic.com/j9ov8n.jpg
The oversubscribed toilets

The toilets in the restaurant entertain great patronage from the visitors. The most active are often the female toilets.

https://i63.tinypic.com/k03mkz.jpg
The Delaying Or Missing Passenger

This set of passengers seem to believe that they have all day to rest at these rest places. When everyone has reconvened in the vehicle for departure, they are always nowhere to be found. A search party would then be constituted to locate them and to remind them that that the rest area is not their final destinations.

Car TalkUK Government Wants Every New Home To Come With An EV Charger by autojosh(op): 4:34pm On Jul 10, 2018
It goes without saying, Electric Vehicles, or “EVs”, are the future of automobiles.

And as such the United Kingdom is planning to eliminate petrol and dissel-powered cars by the year 2040 and get them replaced by Electric Vehicles.

The government of the United Kingdom recently unveiled a proposal that requires new homes, street light posts and businesses to have charging points.

To demonstrate their seriousness, the government is planning to boost the plan with a £400 million ($530 million) fund for companies that produce and install EV chargers.

All these are part of a process by the government to reduce emissions by 80 percent compared to 1990 levels.

According to Transport Secretary, Chris Grayling, all these are a part of a big plan to eliminate gas-powered cars, but given that EVs currently can’t travel nearly as far, the nation will need to have a robust charging infrastructure in place well ahead of that. The aim is to have “one of the most comprehensive support packages for zero-emission vehicles in the world,”.

The current drawbacks to this plan is that, EVs can only go about 250 miles, maximum, less than half the distance of gas- or diesel-powered cars. On top of that, it can take hours to charge an EV, compared to just minutes to gas up a regular automobile.

Indeed, in no distant time, these drawbacks will be surmounted.

Can Nigeria current pathetic epileptic power supply challenges allow us to partake in this future?

TravelThe History Of The Lagos BRT (25 Things Every Lagosian Must Know) by autojosh(op): 12:53pm On Jul 10, 2018
https://i65.tinypic.com/n623o2.jpg

1. During the military administration of Lagos state, the World Bank made a proposal tagged, “the Lagos Urban Transport Project (LUTP)”. It was a proposal designed to reform urban transport in Lagos. The proposal was completely ignored by the military rulers.

2. On assumption of office as the governor of Lagos state, Bola Tinubu, discovered the “the Lagos Urban Transport Project” proposal.

3. In 2002, the Tinubu-led government approved “the Lagos Urban Transport Project” proposal. With the assistance from the World Bank – the Lagos state government began its implementation. The World Bank provided technical support, while the Lagos state government provided the capital funding.

4. As a condition, the World Bank insisted on the creation of a professional urban transport management and regulation authority. This gave birth to the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) in 2002.

5. During his second term in office, the Tinubu-led government – working on the suggestion by the World Bank – began work on a new high-capacity bus system that would later become the Lagos bus rapid transit (BRT). The BRT is a global system that employs dedicated lanes to deliver fast, comfortable and cost-effective bus service.

6. The implementation of the BRT system suffered a significant delay. This was due to a prolong negotiation between the state government and the NURTW. The state government needed to get the approval of the road union for the project.

7. As part of the government efforts to convince the transport union of the benefit of the BRT system, the government, through LAMATA, sponsored trips to Latin America for NURTW officials to see how BRT systems work in those places.

https://i66.tinypic.com/121377m.jpg

8. The state government and the NURTW finally arrived at an agreement: the agreement was for the government to grant a NURTW-affiliated cooperative the concession to operate one of the BRT lines in Lagos.

9. In 2005, the NURTW was assigned the responsibility of identifying buses that would be suitable for the operation of the BRT scheme. The key consideration for the choice of suitable bus included ability to operate on local roads, climatic conditions and affordability. A truck-derivative passenger chassis from Ashok Leyland in India, with bodywork from the same country, despite the shipping costs, was adopted.

10. On August 2006, LAMATA contracted the Integrated Transport Planning Ltd. (ITP), to carry out a feasibility study for the development of the initial Corridor for the Lagos Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System. The objective of the study was to determine the infrastructure, operations, regulatory and institutional reforms that would be needed to have an effective BRT model for Lagos state.

11. In 2007, Governor Babatunde Fashola introduced the Lagos State Bus Asset Management Limited (LAGBUS) scheme. The LAGBUS was set up as a limited liability company. LAGBUS is a management collaboration between the Lagos state government and the NURTW.

12. With the state government as guarantor, LAMATA was able to secure loans from commercial banks to finance the purchase of BRT buses for the state and the NURTW corporative.

13. LAGBUS procured 120 buses and were leased to its partner operators. An additional 40 buses were procured and were directly operated by LAGBUS. In addition, about 100 new buses were procured by the private sector without any direct government support.

https://i66.tinypic.com/2em0t3t.jpg

14. On 17 March 2008, the first BRT scheme in Sub-Saharan Africa was born. This happened when the first phase of the Lagos BRT was opened. It was tagged “BRT-Lite”. It operated on a 22-kilometer radial highway that connects Mile 12 and Lagos Island. That is, it ran from Mile 12 through Ikorodu Road and Funsho Williams Avenue, Eko Bridge up to CMS.

15. In its first year, the BRT transported an average of 200,000 passengers per day. In 2012, it carried 51 million passengers, averaging around 140,000 a day. Still, this was only a fraction of the passengers that use private buses.

16. The BRT regime brought mass transit price competition. BRT bus fare were 30% lesss than the average. That is, from N100 to the N150 charged by danfos. BRT also introduced a reduction by 40% in the journey time, and cut the average waiting time by 35%.

17. A second phase of the BRT was later implemented. It extended from CMS to Mile 12 to Ikorodu.

18. 26 bus shelters are offered along the Mile 12-CMS road; three bus terminals are also placed along the corridor (at Mile 12, Moshalashi and CMS), with the bus terminal at CMS designed to integrate with transport modes of rail and ferry that are planned for future construction by LAMATA.

19. To enhance its operations, a franchise system was devised by LAGBUS to allow private sector participation in the BRT scheme. In 2012, a LAGBUS franchise became operational. It started with 10 franchise companies, 17 operating routes and 238 buses.

20. While the contract signed with LAGBUS by the franchisees was still running, Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) went into a controversial BRT franchise with another private firm, this time, Primero

21. On 6 January 2016, the Ambode-led government banned the LAGBUS buses from the BRT scheme. It meant that LAGBUS-NURTW-controlled buses were no longer allowed to utilize the Ikorodu-Mile 12-CMS BRT corridor to load or drop passengers, they could use the road like other private commercial vehicles. The rickety conditions of the buses- among other violations by the operators – were cited as the reason to the termination of the contract.

https://i65.tinypic.com/ixe9er.jpg

22. The banned LAGBUS franchise buses were moved to 14 other non-BRT routes identified by the LAMATA Master plan.

23. Before LAGBUS franchisees were controversially taken off the very lucrative BRT corridors, the number of franchisee had grown to 37.

24. Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), in a move that sparked controversy and suspicion, accorded Primero Transport Services Limited – a private company, with the exclusive right to operate on the lucrative BRT corridors in Lagos state. Meanwhile, the details of the contract LAMATA signed with Primero has remained shrouded in secrecy.

25. Currently, LAMATA is in direct control of BRT (Primero Transport Services Ltd and the BRT infrastructure); NURTW is in charge of LAGBUS operation.

If you think you have seen it all in Naija, then think again!

This SUV – a Kia Sorento – was spotted on the road. It was seen moving with a woman seated ontop of it.

Apparently, the car was filled to capacity, leaving no available sitting space for the woman ontop of the car. So, improvisation became necessary.

It reminds you of the famous saying:

Car TalkMercedes-Benz Sets New Record; Sells Over 1.18Million Cars In First Half Of 2018 by autojosh(op): 11:35am On Jul 09, 2018
The first half of 2018 has proved to be record setting for Mercedes-Benz. It was the best quarter in the history of the company, in terms of sales.

Between April to June, 594,528 customers received their new Mercedes-Benz (+1.9%).

Thus, Mercedes-Benz sold more vehicles than ever before in a half-year: Since the beginning of the year, 1,188,832 cars with the three-pointed star were delivered to customers all over the world. Unit sales were thus 3.9% higher than in the previous highest first half-year in 2017. In the first six months, Mercedes-Benz was the premium brand with the most new registrations in several markets, including Germany, France, Russia, Switzerland, Portugal, South Korea, Australia, the USA and Canada.

With 203,783 vehicles sold, June was the month with the second highest sales since the beginning of the year (-2.6%). Figures of last month were affected amongst other things by a fire at a US supplier. This meant a significant lower production of the SUVs for the world market at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Tuscaloosa and sales were less than planned.

TravelTell LASTMA Official To Take You To Court If You're Arrested - LASTMA GM by autojosh(op): 5:39pm On Jul 03, 2018
Sometime ago, Autojosh did an article to highlight your road traffic rights when dealing with LASTMA officials.

See the article: Can LASTMA Officials Arrest Me?

In the article, we highlighted how to exercise some of your road traffic rights when confronted by a LASTMA official.

The General Manager of the State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Musa Olawale, has further enforced some of those points.

In a recent interview on RhythmFM, the LASTMA GM, said everyone has the right to tell that LASTMA official to take you to court when arrested for any traffic offense.

He said “No LASTMA officer has the right to arrest you when there are no signs, but I tell that there will be signs there. People don’t have that kind of training to look at signs.

“I have instances myself I called people, they will tell me there’s no sign and I take them back and they see sign.

“Sometimes our people see the signs and think they can get away with it and they tell you that LASTMA is ambushing them. If it were to be in an advance country, there will be no LASTMA there, just camera to take your photos.

“There’ll be nobody to take you back and once that camera takes your photo, you will pay for it.”

“If there’s no sign, you have the right to say take me to court.“

“Because right now in LASTMA, we don’t issue tickets when you commit offenses. That LASTMA and that offender would both go and face the court”

“And the LASTMA officer has to prove that person is guilty and that’s what we set up now.”

“If you have that experience, tell that LASTMA officer that I want to go to court now.”

The road networks in Lagos are very complicated. Navigating one’s way around the city is nothing short of an adventure.

No matter how long you have resided in Lagos, you just keep discovery new traffic routes every other day. Even veterans in the taxicab business are sometimes clueless about some traffic routes in the metropolis.

In Lagos, there are consequences for ignorance of some traffic routes.

For instance – unwittingly driving in the opposite direction of traffic on a road designated as “One-Way” can have severe consequences. An offending motorist risk an arrest for this. Ignorance is never accepted as an excuse.

In Lagos, the penalty for driving against traffic on a road designated as “One-Way” route is 1 to 3-year jail term. And the vehicle also gets forfeited to the state government.

That is how dire the consequences are when one flaunts the “One-Way” traffic law in Lagos.

However, it appears as though the government and the road authorities are fraudulently benefiting from the one-way traffic law in Lagos.

This appears so because they seem to encourage motorists to contravene the laws by not making any effort to place road-signs indicating “One-Way: traffic on these roads.

For instance, in Lagos, some locations are enormously notorious for having a huge number of booby traps disguised as “One-Way” roads. Some of these locations include Shomolu, Apapa, Yaba, Lagos Island, etc.

Many of the routes in the aforementioned locations have absolutely no road signs to indicate that they are one way routes. Even if present, they are ingeniously hidden behind some obstruction – or far away from sight. Clearly, without any visible signs, these roads have been designed to be one-way ticket to jail.

Indeed, the lack of road signs in some of these locations to indicate their one-way status is quite worrisome.

Even more worrisome is that Lagos state is one place where it is quite common for a road that is a “two-way” road today to suddenly metamorphose into a one-way road the following day. And with no road-signs to indicate such a change – motorists can be arrested for violating the sudden law.

Worse of all, the police, LASTMA, Council officials, etc typically use the one-way situation to feed fat off the ignorance of some motorists.

So, in the absence of road signs to direct motorists, isn’t it fraudulent for the authorities, or the police, to arrest a motorist for taking “one-way”?

What's your opinion?
