CrimeThird Mainland Bridge: A Favourite Location For Acts Of Suicide by autojosh(op): 4:40pm On Jun 12, 2018
Unarguably, Nigeria has witnessed more suicide cases within the last 4 years than since when the country gained independence.

Clearly, there is frustration and hardship in the land. These situations have been very effective in driving so many Nigerians into depression and other mental health conditions.

Numerous cases of suicide are being reported from different parts of the country. Lagos state is not an exception.

However, in Lagos state, one spot has become notorious as a location of choice, or a favourite, for those with tendency for suicide. That location is the Third Mainland Bridge.

Frequently, Nigerians who have lost all reasons to keep staying alive travel all the way to the Third-Mainland Bridge. There, they take the very daring plunge into the Lagos lagoon, and then sink deep into their demise.

So, how can this unfortunate trend be stopped?

What measure needs to be put in place to prevent people from reducing the bridge to a place of death?

Perhaps, the government – Federal or State – should consider erecting high mesh fences similar to the median fences being erected on Lagos expressways.

Hopefully, if this is done, then the Third Mainland Bridge would stop being self-execution ground for depressed Nigerians.

Travel2050: A Prediction Of The Nigerian Auto And Transport Industry by autojosh(op): 1:56pm On Jun 12, 2018
Hello, auto family !

I sat down a while ago in a Danfo looking out the window as the driver hustled and found a way out of the heavy traffic we were in, I got thinking- What will the Nigerian auto industry look like, what about public transport, roads ?.

Taking into full consideration the global and local trends, these were my thoughts, lets dive in

1.Very Cheap Cars
I believe cars would be considerably cheaper, by then there would be an electric car revolution in more developed countries. Many countries have already set targets of 2040-2050 to stop inflow of gasoline cars. Guess where most of the cars abandoned by people switching to electric cars would come to ?. Yes !, our dear Naija, the ever ready dumping ground .

2.More Railways
We are already seeing more railways, I believe even more would spring up with time !.

3.Subway Transport
I believe without a doubt that by then Nigeria would have at least one or two subway routes, it most likely would be inter-state .

3.More Local Auto Manufacturers
The likes of Innoson and Proforce would be given a run for their money.More local auto manufacturers would spring up !.The competition would actually be good for the industry, Innoson is so complacent with improvement because there is no local brand competing with them,by then they would have died off, if they fail to innovate, kudos to them so far. Surprisingly, one of these local manufacturers might produce electric cars .

4.A Considerable Acceptance Of Electric Vehicles
Let’s be honest, as much as many won’t agree, so many parts of Nigeria has seen a significant improvement in power supply, it would only get better .And finally Nigerians would stop giving the excuse of “no light”, and start buying electric vehicles.

5.Electric Buses And Trains
I see this coming up in places like Lagos,Kano and Rivers state, electric buses would most likely be made available for public transit, intra-state.

6.More Acceptance Of Ferry Transportation
Even though it already exists, its still poorly used and accepted. Especially in Lagos, transportation by ferry would be made safer and more attractive and would be used as a regular means of transportation by much more people.

7.Third Mainland Bridge Might Be Gone
No, its not what you are thinking, I am not a prophet of doom, it won’t collapse. With time that bridge would reach a point where maintenance won’t be able to hold it any longer, so it would be demolished and a new bridge would be built. I may be wrong though, but I strongly believe so. Civil engineers in the house over to you, disagree ?.

What are your predictions ?
We would like to hear from you.

Business13 Ways You Can Make Money With Your Car by autojosh(op): 1:43pm On Jun 12, 2018
Sometimes, the cost of maintaining a car could drive one crazy. No wonder many believe that a car is a liability.

Well, you can actually transform your car from being a liability into an asset.

There are many things you can do daily to take your car from being a money-draining machine into a money-making machine.

Autojosh.com lists some ideas that can help you earn some extra money for yourself with your car.

https://i68.tinypic.com/157fy9f.jpg
Taking Children to School and picking them up

You need to be a parent in order to really appreciate this service. Making 2 trips to your children’s school daily is such a chore. Most parents will gladly pay you so that they do not have to do these trips twice a day. So, with your car, you can take children from multiple families to school. The fees could be per child or anyway you feel convenient. You can also charge them either weekly or monthly. Of course, you need to show proof of being responsible enough for parents to be able to trust you with their children.

https://i68.tinypic.com/ic0ok5.jpg
Providing Ride-Share services

There are a growing number of ride-share companies out there. They include Uber, Taxify, Oga Taxi, etc. You can enlist your car and become one of their drivers. Using your car to provide ride-share services offers more flexibility and options than you might realize. You do not have to drive all the time. You can drive only when you find convenient. You can also do this together with your regular job. In addition, drivers enjoy several bonuses from the company.

https://i66.tinypic.com/4lredj.jpg
Delivering Food

You can use your car to deliver groceries or other foodstuffs to people who are too busy to go to the market. You take their order, you go to the market, get their groceries and deliver it to them. Then you get paid.

https://i67.tinypic.com/xbiki9.jpg
Offer Driving Lessons

With your car, you could use it to offer driving lessons to learner drivers.

https://i68.tinypic.com/2exbuhw.jpg
Rent Out Your Car

You could list your car as a rental car. This make a whole lot of sense especially if you have an extra car that you do not use often. Fees should be paid on how long it would be used or how far it would be driven. Of course, the car should be returned fully fueled. As a renter, it is very important that you verify and create a profile of your renters that would include proof of licence. Also, ensure that the car has tracking device installed. Especially the type that enables you to remotely demobilize the car.

https://i65.tinypic.com/2zjlw9g.jpg
Deliver Foodstuff For Restaurants Owners

Restaurants owners go to the market frequently to buy the requirements for their business. You could have an arrangement with some of them to convey them to and from the market.

https://i67.tinypic.com/n1plhy.jpg
Transport Other People’s Equipment

There are professionals who move around with the work equipment. For instance, TV production people. You can make them aware of the availability of your car to move them and their equipment around. But for a fee of course.

https://i66.tinypic.com/23lkzsi.jpg
Wedding Chauffeur Service

You can advertise as a wedding chauffeur. If your car is decent-looking enough, it can be hired to transport intending couples on their wedding day.

https://i66.tinypic.com/282045f.jpg
Convey Workers To Work

You can have an arrangement to convey workers who reside at a particular location to their places of work. For instance, you could transport workers in you area who work at Victoria Island every morning to work. You can work out an arrangement for them to pay you weekly or monthly.

https://i66.tinypic.com/10zthxe.jpg
Do Paid Advertising

There are companies that pay people to wrap their cars with their adverts.

The longer your commute, the more you can be paid to wrap your car with their adverts. The more you drive, the more exposure the businesses get. So, they will be willing to pay a premium for those who cover lots of distance. Depending on your commute, location, and the campaign, you can earn a good sum with your car.

https://i67.tinypic.com/2a0jgp4.jpg
Start a Taxi Buisness

Indeed, you can earn income by starting a taxi business. And you have just what it requires: a car.

https://i63.tinypic.com/2ugmdk1.jpg
Lease To Company

You can lease your car to a company for use as one of their official cars. You can be paid monthly, or weekly or in any way you negotiate for.

https://i65.tinypic.com/w1pdts.jpg
Weekend Services To Families

There are families or individuals who do not own a car. Once a while, especially weekends, they often have a need to hire a car. Look out for such people and offer them weekend driving services.

TravelThe Lagos Road Traffic Law: Why Is The LASG Weak In Enforcing This Law by autojosh(op):
On August 3, 2012, the Fashola administration enacted the Lagos road traffic laws.

This law outrightly banned the activities of the Agberos (NURTW, RTEAN, etc.) both at motor parks and at bus stops.

Curiously, the enforcement of that law by the chest-beating administration only lasted for 3 days.

Interestingly, that law still exists. Yet, there has been no political will by successive administrations to enforce it.

Agberos activities are one of the causes of hike in transport fares. And they also cause traffic hold-ups at most bus stops.

Since that law was instituted, there has been an absolute lack of will power by successive administrations to enforce this law.

Also worthy of note is that, 50% of the violent activities in Lagos is because of the activities of the agberos. Their frequent clashes with rival groups constitute about 50% of the spate of insecurities experience in the state.

They don’t build roads. They don’t repair roads. They don’t clean roads. They do not buy vehicles for commercial vehicle operators. They do not stand as guarantors for drivers and riders when they need loans from lenders to purchase their vehicles.

Yet, the Agberos in Lagos – under the guise of the NURTW, MOALS, etc. – generate mind-boggling income for themselves from the illegal levies they extort from commercial vehicle operators.

What is more unfortunate is that they carry out their illegal activities on roads and infrastructure built and maintained by the state government.

So, why is the Lagos state government displaying a terrific weakness to enforce this law?

Car Talk8 Electric Cars That Sells Below N14 Million (PHOTOS) by autojosh(op): 1:10pm On Jun 07, 2018
Electric cars or Electric Vehicles (EVs) are the future of automobiles. This is a reality that we cannot not run away from.

Sadly, Nigeria is still suffering from poor electricity power supply challenge. This is something most countries in the world have overcome decades back.

Various nations are now making deadlines to when they intend to phase out vehicles that are powered by carbon-based fuel.

Soon, vehicle manufacturers will terminate the production of petrol and diesel-powered vehicles.

It goes without saying, Nigeria had better shape up to this reality, or shipout.

Earlier, we posted an article “Why Are Nigerians Are Not Buying Electric Cars ?”

Interestingly, some respondents to that article – asides expressing concerns about our capacity to get enough electricity to power the cars, also believed that Electric Cars – being a new technology – would be way out of the reach of most Nigerians.

Well, this is not exactly true.

There are quite a number of EVs that are within the budget for cars of many Nigerians.

Autjosh.com has compiled a list of some Electric cars together with their cost (the cost quoted is exclusive of import duties) and driving range of some electric cars that are affordable for Nigerians.

Car TalkRe: The All New Audi Q8 Is Indeed A Luxury Sport SUV (photos) by autojosh(op): 9:03am On Jun 07, 2018

Car TalkThe All New Audi Q8 Is Indeed A Luxury Sport SUV (photos) by autojosh(op):
The Audi Q8 combines the elegance of a four-door luxury coupé with the practical versatility of a large SUV.

This beauty on wheels measures 4.99 meters (16.4 ft) long, 2.00 meters (6.6 ft) wide and 1.71 meters (5.6 ft) tall. This SUV coupe is wider, shorter and lower than its Q7 sister model.

It also has a wheelbase of nearly 3.00 meters (9.8 ft), and offers a spacious interior that beats of its direct competitors in most relevant dimensions, including interior length and headroom.

There is a three-seat system in the rear with longitudinally adjusting upon request. With the seat backs folded down, the luggage compartment under the power rear hatch holds up to 1,755 liters (62.0 cu ft).

Standard LED headlights illuminate the road, with HD Matrix LED technology available as an option. Here both the three-dimensional signature of the daytime running lights and the taillights have a digital character.

A light strip connects the units at the rear. As in the original Audi quattro, a black surface underlays this strip.

Q8 owners can use the myAudi app on their smartphone to activate various lighting functions and experience them from the outside.

The Audi Q8 is top-notch with respect to sound and connection quality thanks to the Audi phone box and voice-over LTE.

The same applies to the Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System. It delivers fascinating 3D sound with height information to all five seats. The music unfolds exactly how it was recorded in the concert hall.

Whether parking, in the city or on long journeys – the Audi Q8 supports its driver in many situations. Among the systems contributing here are the adaptive cruise assist, efficiency assist, crossing assist, lane change warning, curb warning and 360 degree cameras. One highlight is the remote garage pilot, which will follow in early 2019. Under the supervision of the driver, it guides the SUV into a garage and back out again autonomously. The driver gets out of the car beforehand and activates the process using the myAudi app on their smartphone.

The Audi Q8 launches in the third quarter of 2018.

Car Talk4 Cylinder Or 6 Cylinder Engines. Which One Should I Go For? by autojosh(op):
https://i66.tinypic.com/28tko01.jpg

There are a lot of considerations and factors carefully looked at when buying a vehicle. The engine the car comes with is one of them. Whether you’re buying an executive Mercedes Benz S-class or a Kia Picanto, the engine type should be put into consideration. The number of cylinder a car comes with is a very important factor in the general performance of the engine.

Be it as it may, a lot of people still don’t give a damn about the engine so far it is healthy.

The most popular categories of car engines are the 6 cylinders and 4 cylinders. The 6 cylinder can come in either V6 or straight 6 configurations.

The aim of this post is to straighten out the differences between the 6 cylinder and the 4 cylinder so you’ll be very much decisive of the one to go for when buying that your dream vehicle.

We would start by first giving the explanation of 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder engines.

4 Cylinder engines:
It can come in straight line or V4 configuration. The V4 engine which can be found in some old model Saab, Ford… has now become so rare in cars. However, V4 engines are still widely used in bikes. The common straight line 4 cylinder engine has 4 cylinders mounted along the crankcase either upright or an inclined plane.

6 cylinder engines:
The 6 cylinder engine has 6 cylinders. We have the straight-six engine and the V6 engine configurations. The straight-six offers great engine balance and easier access for maintenance while the V6 is more compact and fits better in front-wheel drive configuration.

We would be comparing the 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder engines in terms of efficiency, carbon emission, power and maintenance.

1. Efficiency:
A 4 cylinder engine will save you more fuel than a car with 6 cylinder engine. The higher the number of cylinders, the more the fuel the car consumes. So, if you’re much concerned about the cost of fueling a car you’ll buy, go for 4 cylinder.
Automakers are working diligently to improve the overall performance of the 6 cylinder engine to match the 4 cylinder engine in terms of gas mileage and emission.
That being said, it is possible for some 4 cylinder engines to have higher capacity than some 6 cylinders, hence, the possibility of being less efficient.

2. Emission:
People are now very cautious of the environment and have the goals to make it as green as possible. 4 cylinder engines will cause less pollution to the environment when compared to 6 cylinder engines.

3. Power:
The 6 cylinder engines are more powerful, last longer, relatively faster and give better driving experience. Power delivery is much better. They are also more balanced at top speed than the 4 cylinder counterparts.
4-cylinder is the best if you know that you are not traveling at top speed every day. Like if you’re the intra-city type of guy.

4. Maintenance:
The 4 cylinder would always be easier to maintain. Routine maintenance like servicing of injector can easily be done on a 4 cylinder engine than 6 cylinder engine. The parts for 4 cylinder engines are usually cheaper than that of 6 cylinder engines. Although, some 4 cylinder engines can be more difficult to maintain than some 6 cylinder. Especially those 4 cylinder engines that comes with turbochargers as well as excessive tech to boost performance whilst reducing fuel consumption as against a simple naturally aspirated 6 cylinder engine.

Which do you prefer? Tell us in the comment section.

TravelCar Accidents: 10 Ways To Get Home Safe After Drinking by autojosh(op): 2:40pm On Jun 04, 2018
After a drinking spree, or indulgence in recreational drugs, trying to drive or ride home will put you and other road users in danger.

Alcohol and other drugs slow your reflexes, reduce coordination and increase risk-taking behaviour, etc. Each of these makes a car-crash more likely.

Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights account for more than one third of fatal drink driving car accidents. And they usually happen between the hours of 9 pm and 3 am.

Within that social period, the chances of an alcohol-related auto crash are much higher than any other time of the week.

So, how does one prevent an auto-mishap after indulging in alcohol?

Autojosh.com highlights 10 ways that one get home safe and avoid alcohol-related car accidents.

https://i67.tinypic.com/23tqnvt.jpg
1. Plan ahead

Before heading out for a drinking session, make plans ahead, on how you intend to come back home. Think of safe alternatives to you driving home. Then opt for any of them.

https://i65.tinypic.com/10p2jh2.jpg
2. Leave your car at home

Take a public transport to the venue of the happy hour. Leaving your car behind is a guarantee that you will not be in a car-crash. Well, that is except you did not opt for an equally inebriated driver to take you home.

https://i63.tinypic.com/z9161.jpg
3. Get A Ride-Share App (Uber, Taxify, Oga Taxi, etc)

Use a ride-share app to request for a ride to the venue and back. Apart from the convenience, this is a safer option to driving home yourself. Requesting for a ride on any of these platforms minimizes the risk of being taken advantage of, cheated on the fare, or even getting robbed by the driver.

https://i68.tinypic.com/1y2vsg.jpg
4. Walk home

If your home is within a walkable distance, then walk home. One benefit of this is that, walking tends to help wear out the alcohol in your system. However, be wary of some risk that comes with a drunk pedestrian.

Walking home with a friend or two is also a great idea. Besides, it is a way to get some exercise and possibly sober up a little to reduce the next day headache.

Car TalkMandatory Safety Features For Cars By 2021 by autojosh(op): 12:29pm On May 18, 2018
The importance of safety in the automotive industry cannot be overemphasized. ‘Safety first’ has always been the watchword.

From predictions, these mandatory safety features for all the new cars from the year 2021 will save 7300 lives and prevent 38900 serious injuries between 2020 and 2030.

Here are some of the safety features that will be mandatory by the year 2021

1. Autonomous emergency braking (AEB):
This system will automatically apply a car’s brake if a driver fails to slow down for an obstacle. From predictions, this will reduce rear-end collisions by 38 percent.

2. Over-ridable intelligent speed assistance:
This is also known as adaptive cruise control. It matches a car’s speed to leading traffic, braking and accelerating automatically.

3. Fatigue detection

4. Lane-keep assistance

5. Electronic stability control

6. Anti-lock brakes

Announcing the new safety measures, the European Commission’s head of markets, Elżbieta Bieńkowska, said:

“90% of road accidents are due to human error. The new mandatory safety features we propose today will reduce the number of accidents and pave the way for a driverless future of connected and automated driving.”

The above proposal is for the EU member states.

Christianity EtcChris Okotie And Tom Sampson: 2 Nigerian Pastors Who Own Rolls-Royce by autojosh(op): 9:31am On May 18, 2018
Rolls-Royce is the ultimate luxury machine. It epitomizes sophisticated design with immaculate attention to detail. Its luxury finishing touches combine with a first class experience for driver and passenger to deliver new levels of exclusivity which the brand’s elite customers crave.

To acquire a Rolls-Royce, it would require parting with a considerable amount of money.

In Nigeria, two popular men of God are privileged to own this luxury-on-wheel. Well, the number would have been three had Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere, the General Overseer of the Omega Power Ministries, OPM, not declined to accept a Rolls-Royce birthday gift to him by members of his congregation.

Anyway, here are two clergymen who clearly have the anointing for accepting birthday gifts of Rolls-Royce.

Pastor Chris Okotie

Pastor Chris Okotie is one clergy that loves the good life.

This several times Nigerian presidential aspirant has never been shy to demonstrate his love for luxury cars.

The debonair pastor in charge of the Ikeja-based Household of God’s Church International Ministries owns several luxury cars. His garage features cars like Hummers, Range Rover Autobiography, Mercedes Benz, BMW, etc.

In 2013, the former pop-star acquired for himself a 2014 Bespoke Phantom Coupe, Series 2. The car costs him a staggering N80million.

According to him, it was a birthday and an anniversary gift to himself to celebrate his 27th year as a pastor and 30 years as a born again Christian.

The flamboyant preacher is known to mostly drive himself, typically in a convoy of cars driven by security details.

Bishop Tom Sampson

Bishop Tom Sampson is the flamboyant Bishop of Christ Royal Family International Church.

He made news at a point for his acquisition of a stretch Hummer SUV.

Indeed, he sees absolutely no reason why he should not live the life of a royalty. And in living up to the royal status, he received a gift of a car befitting of royalty – a custom-built 2014 Rolls-Royce. It was a gift from some members of his congregation. It was in celebration of his 50th birthday on December 2015.

Bishop Tom Sampson is the founder of Royal City College of Education, Iyesi-Ota, Ogun state.

TravelRe: Lagos Begins Urban Regeneration Of Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Ikeja G.R.A by autojosh(op): 3:23pm On May 17, 2018

TravelLagos Begins Urban Regeneration Of Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Ikeja G.R.A by autojosh(op): 3:23pm On May 17, 2018
The Lagos State Government on Wednesday commenced the urban regeneration of Ikoyi, Victoria Island and Ikeja G.R.A, with the unveiling of 45 new road construction equipment and commissioning of newly interlocked road in Lekki.

The equipment, including three road printers and three giant wheel leaders, were unveiled after a public demonstration to the media and government functionaries to complete the construction of interlocked road in Joseph Hotounu Street, Lekki.

Others are five driving rollers, 18 hand operating rollers, one excavator, one paver, six tractors, three wheel loaders, one chip sealer, one milling machine, one hiab, one sweeper machine and one synchronous chip sealer.

Speaking at the unveiling, the State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, said the new equipment were procured in line with efforts to reposition the Lagos State Public Works Corporation for the urban regeneration programme aimed at addressing environmental and infrastructural challenges in Ikoyi, Victoria Island and Ikeja G.R.A.

The Governor, who was represented by Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr Rotimi Ogunleye, said the equipment would be immediately deployed across the State for the urban renewal initiative, saying that they would go a long way in ensuring the regeneration of the entire Lagos landscape.

“We are here to commission these machines, equipment and gadgets and to state that these range of products would be deployed immediately to the urban regeneration of Victoria Island, Ikoyi and Ikeja and they are being put in place today to further upgrade the activities of the Lagos State Public Works Corporation so that from their three centres in Badagry, Ojodu and Imota, they can take care of the rest of Lagos State.

“We are at this site to see physically the demonstration of the capability and capacity of the equipment. I want to state emphatically that this development is a sign of the government’s commitment to the regeneration and renewal of the entire Lagos State landscape.

“The Public Works Corporation has three regional centres in Badagry, Ojodu and Imota of which the various machines would be deployed to the various areas. Essentially, this point is to regenerate V.I, Ikoyi and Ikeja urban centres and it is an all-inclusive developmental process,” he said.

Also speaking, Secretary to the State Government, Mr Tunji Bello said the paving stone machines and road printers were acquired to basically construct roads that would last longer considering the state of the Lagos environment being waterlogged.

“We carefully thought about it before we even embarked on it. It was planned long time ago for the equipment to be acquired and having been acquired, they will be deployed immediately for road construction.

“One of the problems we have in Lagos is road tarring because the water table in Lagos is very high and it does not allow most of our roads to last and so we needed equipment to make our roads longer and part of it was to acquire the equipment which have just been tested.

“So, now we will be using paving stones mostly and they will last longer particularly in a terrain like Lagos and that is what we have seen today,” Bello said.

While giving practical demonstration of the workings of the equipment, Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Works and Chief Executive Officer, Lagos State Public Works Corporation, Engr Temidayo Erinle said the road printer has the capacity to pave road between six and eight metres faster and reduce man-hours.

“The road printer can make road paving of 400 to 600metres square in a one-day working shift of eight hours. The road printer makes road construction faster, easier and cheaper,” Erinle said.

While revealing that the State Government was in the process of further procuring interlocking making machines, Erinle urged residents to take proper care of the road just unveiled and desist from indulging in activities that could damage it.

Responding on behalf of the residents of Joseph Hotounu Street, Lekki, Mrs Ronke Giwa thanked the State Government for fixing the road from its dilapidated state, saying the development had removed their decades of sufferings.

“Before the construction of this road, our cars were getting spoilt; we dread the rains and it had been on for decades so I like to thank Governor Ambode and the State Government for giving us this road,” she said.

TravelWhy Are The Four Other Seaports In Nigeria Abandoned? by autojosh(op): 2:30pm On May 17, 2018
Nigeria and Benin Republic are competitors in the maritime business. The two West African countries are competing to be the Load Center, otherwise known as transshipment base, in West Africa.

Tragically, Contonou has remained the haven for Nigerian importers.

About 60% of all the imports to West Africa are destined to Nigeria. However, what gets to our seaports is just about 10%.

In other words, all the shipment coming to West Africa are billed for Nigeria, but at the end of the day what gets to Nigerian port directly is just about 10%.

The greater amount of cargoes are offloaded in neigbouring ports in Cotonou and other West African states and then they are transshipped to Nigeria. This is mostly because the seaports at Apapa and Tin Can are enormously overwhelmed.

https://i65.tinypic.com/1118cwg.jpg
Calabar Port Terminal

Meanwhile, Nigeria has 4 other sea ports that are underutilized or abandoned. The seaports are in Warri, Calabar, Koko and Port Harcourt.

Unarguably, Nigeria enjoys a large market advantage over Benin Republic because of her population, but sadly, it is Benin Republic that benefits from the large market of Nigeria.

Many countries of the world do not have such luxuries of having multiple seaports. Some are landlocked. Fortunately, Nigeria is blessed with many natural harbors and ports. Sadly, we are not taking advantage of this blessing.

Indeed, Nigeria needs deep seaports. However, if fully utilized, the abandoned and underutilized seaports in Nigeria have the capacity to significantly increase our national revenue and indeed our GDP.

So, why are the Port Harcourt, Calabar, Warri and Koko seaports underutilized?

https://i66.tinypic.com/o6h6om.jpg
Port Harcourt Port Terminal

Note, however, that the Intels’ Onne port in River state is Nigeria’s best run and perhaps the most active ports in the country. The Intels’ Onne seaport is a privately-run seaport within the same region as the abandoned ports.

According to the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics, in 2017, the cargo throughput on Nigeria seaport was highest at Onne Port.

In that year, the Onne Port had cargo throughput of 25,836,246 (while inward was 1,947,347, outward was 23,888,899).

This was followed by Apapa Port with 18,909,238 (inward was 17,523,313, while outward was 1,385,925)

Tin Can Island Port was third with 15,520,925 (inward was 14,623 and outward was 1,385,925).

Meanwhile, the other seaports – Port Harcourt, Warri, Calabar – struggled with very poor cargo throughput.

Please note that these almost comatose seaports are within the same axis as the high-performing Onne port.

So, what really is the excuse for the neglect of the seaports at Port Harcourt, Warri and Calabar?
