Car TalkRe: Slightly Stiff Gear by AutoJoshNG: 10:59am On Apr 27, 2016
morningsta:
Hello Nairalanders,

I noticed recently that my gear stick has become slightly stiff and not as smooth as it use to be when changing gears. The car is a Nissan X-Trail, 2008 Model and automatic gear. What can be the issue and how can I fix it pls? my mechanic does not seem to understand it.

thanks in advance for your valued and experienced suggestions.
Make sure you always use your parking brake (hand or leg brake). Don't put your gear in park position to hold your car from rolling as this may damage your gear.

Y shld i go thru all this stress no: plate is meant 2 identify 1 car frm another not about owner which can change frm time to time.
Hello BillyG,

This is a government policy and it has been applicable since the introduction of the new plate number. Changing the plate number does not take time as you can get everything done in a day. However, the CMR may delay till the next day.

pls house, can anyone kindly tell more about 2005 Nissan Primera. Is it a good car to maintain, what are the cons and pros of this car.
Thanks in anticipation.
Hello Hentech911,

You may like to thread with caution when it comes to Nissan. Number 1 issue is the suspension, you may also experience some petty mechanical problems. Ensure you use a good mechanic if you eventually settle for it.

Car TalkRe: Has Anyone Gotten A Car From Auction Export by AutoJoshNG: 10:20am On Apr 27, 2016
chukel:
I don't know how they do it, but I believe they have sinister motives. Their cars are never allowed to be used in US or Canada. Once u buy, it's straight to exit port. It's there in there FAQ. It's there in there terms and condition. Meaning these cars are not safe to be used there.
Hello Chukel,

Please note that auction export serves as an agent that helps you buy cars from different sellers and they are registered in the USA as an exporter. Therefore, the title document of the cars bought through them is always stamped for export only. The advantage for this export only is, you won't have to pay sales tax in USA as taxes are expected to be paid in the country of destination.

Salvaged cars can be repaired, duly registered and driven on American roads but you have to pay all applicable taxes. In fact, car dealers in USA also buy cars from these same auctions like copart and they repair the cars for onward sale to American drivers.

It is a tax issue an not a roadworthiness issue.

I instead to get a car ,2009/10 Toyota Camry from auction export and contacted them, they called me and we discussed on phone, but am skeptical about dealing with a foreign company...has anyone ever bought a car from dem, please share ur experience as I don't want to regret, and how cheap ar their cars compared to buying from Nigeria and also d clearing cost palava. Also how good ar their clean title cars trustworthiness

Thanks
Hello Waley007,

Auction export is a reputable auction brokerage company based in Toronto, Canada. Please note that the vehicles on their website are not in their care but they assist to facilitate the bidding and purchase process from car auctions, car sales and government auction organizations across North America.

It is always better to buy your car in the USA and ship into Nigeria if you want to have confidence in what you are buying because most tokunbo cars that are sold in Nigeria are bought on these same auction sites especially “copart”. The major problem is some dealers do not consider the end user of the car when bidding. Therefore, they buy cars that are extremely compromised at give away prices. However, you can select a car with zero or minimal dent and bring it in yourself as we have always done (see autojoshng on facebook for pictures). You can contact us if you need further assistance.

Buying your car in the USA and shipping to Nigeria has its advantages and disadvantages:

Advantages:
1) It is cheaper.
2) There is availability of varieties to choose from.
3) It is more convenient as the entire purchase to delivery process can be completed from your home.
4) What you see online is what you get. The details of the cars are clearly stated unless you do not know how to interpret them.
5) It is easier to engage a professional vehicle inspector who will help you ascertain the status of the car before you buy it.

Disadvantages:
1) It takes average of 8 weeks for your car to get to Nigeria.
2) Transit risks, which include lost car key, lost document, delay due to poor weather, possible damage to the body of the car when containerized etc. However, these risks hardly occur.
3) You may not be able to inspect the car yourself.
4) Frustration may arise due to bureaucratic processes of foreign organizations and Nigeria Customs.

In conclusion, always endeavor to do a VIN check no matter the route you take. This could go a long way to save you a lot of money and time.
Car TalkRe: Cotonour Cars Are Often Tampered With by AutoJoshNG:
ozone0801:
kindly correct me if I'm wrong;

Most cars purchased from Cotonou have their catalyst removed or stolen as the case may be. Initially I thought it is synonymous to mid-range cars. I bought a 2007 Toyota Camry hybrid last year and the catalyst wasn't there. this year also my uncle bought a 2011 Toyota venza, and it was the same experience which brings me to the conclusion that Cars from Cotonou are always tampered with.

In terms of cost, you get to save 100k or slightly more when compared to Naija price but sometimes the money made/saved becomes irrelevant should in case vital components have been removed from the car and a replacement is required.

I've heard people complained about a component or two being removed or absent from their cotonou car.

Lest i forget, the toyota camry i mentioned earlier had it hybrid battery messed up and it was well managed/staged as perfect while we tested it at cotonou. The car started shutting down on the first day it got to naija, only for us to discover the hybrid battery was bad. We ended up replacing the battery pack for 600k.

I am not trying to spoil anyone's business as there are many dealers here who buys from cotonou, this is a personal experience and it seems many have also experienced it. my experience last year and that of my uncle recently could not have been a coincidence. My uncle's venza couldnt muster enough acceleration, so the muffler/exhaust pipe was checked and we discovered the catalyst had been removed but a net like material stuffed in there as replacement.

pls share your thoughts/similar experience if any
Hello Ozone0801,

Your observations are very valid. Some of these items are tampered with intentionally while some are damaged when transporting the car from Cotonou to Lagos as most drivers make several detours to avoid the Custom officials.

Another downside is you may not be able to drive the car with absolute confidence especially when traveling interstate (many Cotonou cars have been seized). Many cars sold in Cotonou and Most cars sold in Nigeria are accidented especially the ones imported from USA. Therefore, we prefer to buy our cars on auction directly from the USA in order to ensure our cars have zero or minimal dent.

You can check you Facebook page - AUTOJOSH.COM to see some of these cars. Always endeavor to do a VIN check no matter how good a car seems.

Car TalkRe: I Use The Car Once A Week, How Often Should I Service It. by AutoJoshNG:

Hello house!
Please l need help on some information.
How best can l maintain a car (tokunbo) that drives for once or twice a week cumulatively 50 minutes?
l don't want to assume that since l don't use it often, l can as well check or service it once in "two years".
What are the things l need to check with the car from to time, and at what intervals?
l will deeply appreciate your expert's advice.
Hello Cartoonist,

It's better to get that information from the vehicle user manual. You can relax a little on the time limit stipulated for service since you don't drive the car regularly i.e you can service every 9months if the manufacturer say 6months. Please download the user manual online if you do not have a copy in your car.

Car TalkRe: 07 Camry Gear by AutoJoshNG:
Em13:
Please I need help. I'm a lady and sick and tired of dubious people and mechanics. I recently bought a 07 camry only to notice the steering was light on the drive and stiff in reversing and doing right corners. And the car would go off if I put on the airconditioner at the initial start of the car . The car dealer said was because sensor was missing from the airconditioner unit .

He took the car and on return it seemed to be OK.

Then I was told steering pump needed to be serviced for the wheel issue. This seems to still be pending .

But to my coming here on the way home . The car started reving in a funny way till the car stopped. Summary the gear is bad.

I have not driven this car for 7 days cumulatively. He refuses to accept responsibility as according to him all was working at point of sale

I'm told its a 13 pin gear ..... I've been hearing all sorts of prices and presently on our way to ladipo.

Please what's the best way to handle this ....

Does the well issue spell an accidented car ?

Do I call police to arrest him ?

I'm tired !
Hello Em13,

Don't even think about calling the police. That will just waste your time and make you spend more money with no solution.

The car is most likely accidented or Nigerian used as some people package them as tokunbo. A VIN check is a must before you buy a car in Nigeria. You can post the VIN of the car here if you don't mind. You also need to check the import papers to ascertain when the car came into Nigeria.

paix:
No, the key is always in my pocket when in use. Changing the the keyless entry system, do you have any idea how much it might cost?
Hello Paix,

You car is '09 and should have the OEM key.

The cost depends on if the car is for Africa, Europe or America.

Africa has 2 buttons and it costs about N25,000 which includes programming.

Europe has 2 buttons and it costs about N22,000 which includes programming.

America has 3 buttons (includes the trunk release button) and its costs about N25,000 which includes programming.

paix:
Please help, my Toyota Corolla (09) remotes drain battery fast. I have replaced the batteries 3 times already in 18 months. Even the spare exhausts the battery without being used.
Hello Paix,

1) Make sure you buy an original battery.
2) Make sure the remote is not pressed and held down especially when in your pocket.
3) Has any liquid ever spilled on the remote? If yes, the remote may need some internal cleansing.
4) Check the battery connectors or terminals to ensure there is no circuit problem.

Car TalkRe: 2008/2009 C300 Or 2010 Toyota Venza V6 AWD? by AutoJoshNG:
Kufie:
Hello petrolheads, I'll be visiting Nigeria in June and I'm expected to be there for 2-3 months. I love to drive myself and as far as I know, there's no car rental company that lets you drive yourself (I hope I'm mistaken) over there. I'll be making trips from Abuja to Enugu, to Owerri, to Delta and Uyo. May go as far as Sokoto. Which of these vehicles will be the best bet for that trip? I love the C300 for its agility and sportiness and it has a relatively powerful V6 engine. Why I'm considering the Venza is because it offers almost the same driving experience and has the advantage of a better ground clearance. Please I need your advice on this one. Thank you
The Toyota Venza meets all the cars halfway. It's probably your best bet.

The Venza is reliable, has good resale value with a better ground clearance compared to the c300 while hugging the road better than the Lexus RX350 and GX.

The Lexus RX350 is also a good alternative.

Car TalkRe: What Makes Up The Clearing Cost For Cars??? by AutoJoshNG:
krisrock:
Hey guys I have been trying to figure out what makes up the clearing cost for cars and what exactly makes a newer model car more expensive than an older model. I have a friend who is shipping down his 2015 GX460 from Canada and i have heard him say he might spend as much as 5million shocked to clear it and get all the necessary documentations (for my mind that is the price of about two of the cars i wan buy now cry cry just to clear one car) which gets me asking what exactly makes up this five million. Please if we have any clearing agents or anybody with knowledge in this area in the house do help give me a detailed breakdown of how this five million came about and how it is split through the clearing process and also maybe in comparison to an older model car which would have a lower cost and its breakdown as well.

NOTE: Just for a need to know basis, not planning to take anybody's business grin grin. Thanks
Hello Krisrock,

It is very possible to pay that much.

Let's assume the Cost, Insurance and Freight (CIF) for this vehicle is $45,000 which is the average price. CIF is estimated by Nigeria Customs to determine how much you bought the car abroad plus insurance and shipping cost to the Nigerian port.

Use N197/$ to convert to Naira. i.e CIF (cost to lagos port) = N8,865,000

Surface duty is 35% of CIF = N3,102,750
Levy is 35% of CIF = N3,102,750.Levy will only be charged if the vehicle has a low mileage usually below 5,000km
Surcharge 7% of surface duty = N217,193
ETLS (Ecowas Levy), valuation, terminal, shipping etc = N930,000

Total duty without levy is N4,249,943 while with levy is N7,352,693.

Please note that these figures are mere estimates and there will be a variations during actual clearing. Most likely, your friend will not need to pay the levy.

Some conditions may also vary between TINCAN port and Apapa port.

i'm using a converted nissan cube with a nissan primera v6 engine. when i run a not-so-long distance with the a/c on, it gets soo hot to the point of tripping off the engine. what do ido pls?
Hello Eagleonearth,

The problem may not be directly related to the engine swap. It may be some sensors but most likely a general overheating issue. verify that it's not the thermostat, radiator, gasket, water pump or cooling fan.

This is URGENT

I am trying to help a friend's wife whose car will not enter reverse!
The Car is Automatic Gear, Nissan Almera, 1998 - 2000 model.
The Car can drive well in forward gears but put it into reverse, Mbanuu. It will just be raising and not moving at all in reverse.

Gear Oil and other likely problems have been checked and ruled out. What else can l do.

Please MASTERS in the house, what could be the problem?
One neighbour said we should take it to Ladipo for repair but her husband is not at home and l cant leave my work to take it there.
Can anyone give me an idea of what the problem is?
What needs to be repaired and likely cost of this repair?
Even somewhere trustworthy that it can be taken to for repair.
Hello One4me,

If the car shows the reverse light on the dashboard instrument cluster, the problem will be the valve body inside the transmission which can be repaired but better changed. It could also be the strainer which sieves the transmission oil.

If the car does not show the reverse light on the dash, then it is the cable or gear control which will be repaired.

You can meet this Nissan specialist at Ogudu mechanic village if the car is in Lagos. His name is Mr Tunde (08125715853)

Hello Solarisng,

List of possible causes:
1) Unserviced spark plugs.
2) Dirty fuel filter or bad fuel pump.
3) Blocked fuel nozzle: They are located near the spark plugs.
4) Transmission failure: Frequent cause for a sluggish Honda Accord is that year range.
5) Check the air filter but it's most likely not the issue.
6) Catalytic converter: Also a major cause. Make sure you ascertain it's not the catalytic converter before you take a look at the transmission.
