Car Talk10 Driving Offences In Lagos And Their Penalties by AutoJoshNG(op): 5:40am On Jul 14, 2016
Ignorance of the law, they say is not an excuse. In order not to find yourself in a fix with the law enforcement officers, kindly read through the listed traffic offences in Lagos and their penalties:

1)Driving without valid driver's license: Your vehicle will be impounded. For the vehicle to be released, you have to present evidence that you have paid for a new license. You also have to pay for the vehicle's storage at the agency's facility..

2)Driving of any vehicle by persons under 18 years old: N20,000 for first time offenders and N30,000 for subsequent offenders. The vehicle will be impounded and a vehicle storage fee will be paid be its release.

3)Learner driver without permit: N20,000 for first time offenders and N30,000 for subsequent offenders. You must present evidence of payment for learner's permit and storage fee must be paid before the impounded vehicle is released.

4)Driving an unlicensed vehicle: N20,000 for first time offenders and N30,000 for subsequent offenders. You may also be imprisoned for 3 years.

5)Physical assault to a traffic officer: N50,000 and/or 6 months imprisonment.

6)Driving a right hand vehicle: N20,000 for first time offenders and N30,000 for subsequent offenders. The vehicle must be converted to a left hand drive immediately.

7)Driving without valid vehicle documents: The vehicle will be impounded. It will only be released after you present evidence of payment for the outstanding vehicle document(s) e.g vehicle license, road worthiness etc.

coolSmoking while driving: N20,000 for first time offenders and N30,000 for subsequent offenders.

9)Driving a trailer or other vehicle carrying unlatched and unsecured containers: The fine is N250,000 and the vehicle will be impounded.

10)Excessive smoke emission: N20,000 for first time offenders and N30,000 for subsequent offenders.

It will be a big relief to several Lagosians if some of these policies and penalties are implemented to the fullest especially the unlatched containers and the excessive smoke emission.

TravelBefore And After: Cele–Ilasa, Apapa Oshodi Expressway (Pictures) by AutoJoshNG(op): 1:39pm On Jul 05, 2016
Lagosians who usually ply Apapa Oshodi expressway are praising Governor Ambode for the rehabilitation of Cele and Ilasa axis of the express. Some anonymous motorists said they’ve waited for this repair for more than 10 years…

We also use this medium to appeal to the Federal and State Government to ensure all roads and expressways have white lines as this will go a long way to prevent accidents and save lives.

Car TalkRe: Canada Vs USA. Which Is Better For Nigerians At This Time? by AutoJoshNG: 10:49pm On Jul 03, 2016
Hala:
I have been made to believe that it is cheaper to buy a used car from Canada than in USA due to the US-Canadian dollar differences against the Naira.

Is this a statement of fact or are cars from USA more trustworthy than Canada.

Let me know what you think.
Hello Hala,

It is a statement of fact. Presently, 1 Canadian Dollar equals 0.8 US Dollars.

This means you can save 20% on the purchase cost of a car which has the same value in both countries. Considering the current exchange rate, a 10,000 dollar car in USA will cost you 3,500,000 Naira while the same 10,000 Canadian dollar car in Canada will cost you 2,800,000 Naira. Some Americans also go to buy their cars in Canada for this purpose.

It is very easy to get the same car with the same value in both countries and take advantage of the exchange rate. However, there are fewer cars in Canada leaving you with less options to choose from.

Another downside is the extent of snow in Canada and the amount of salt used to melt the snow. This snow and salt may lead to increased rust in cars bought in Canada and states in the northern part USA. Cars bought in the southern USA states which have less or zero snow are usually not affected by this rust issue.

You also need to note that the shipping costs from Canada to Nigeria is usually quoted in USD and the mileage of Canadian cars is usually stated in kilometres. 160,000 mileage in Canada is 100,000 mileage in USA because the former is in kilometres and the latter is in miles.

Car TalkHow To Negotiate A Roundabout by AutoJoshNG(op): 8:24pm On Jun 28, 2016
Roundabouts are designed to make intersections safer and more efficient for drivers and riders. However, driving through one could be pretty hectic as some drivers do not abide by the following guidelines which are required when negotiating a roundabout:

- When going straight: Do not use your turn signals, approach on the right lane, keep on that lane while in the roundabout and when exiting.
- When making a right turn: Use your right turn signal and approach the roundabout on the right lane.
- When making a left turn: Use your left turn signal before entering the roundabout and approach on the left lane. Maintain the left lane until you leave the roundabout.
- When making a U-turn: Approach on the left lane with the left turn signal on. Switch off the turn signal before you exit the roundabout.

Finally, you need to yield to vehicles in the roundabout, maintain a single lane as much as possible, keep moving and avoid driving next to large/articulated vehicles.

Car TalkGovernment Vs Hoodlums, Who Is To Blame For The Uncovered Manholes? by AutoJoshNG(op):
The amount of opened manholes on Lagos roads is alarming and Lagosians are calling on the government to do something about them. These exposed holes has led to many tyre punctures, some accidents and the possibility of death cannot be ruled out.

It is also a common trend that newly built roads are left with uncovered holes for as long as possible and some residents claim they had to cover them themselves. However, some claim the covers are removed by hoodlums to enable them extort drivers whose vehicles breakdown due to these dangerous holes.

It is of utmost importance that something is done about these dangerous pits as they are found on several roads and highways which include: Eko bridge, Saka Tinubu street in Victoria Island, Adelabu street in Surulere and other parts of Lagos.

Let us make our roads car worthy and not only focus on cars being road worthy. It is pertinent for the government to resolve this issue as soon as possible and any Lagosian caught sabotaging the government’s effort should be reported immediately.

Tell us your opinion in the comment section.
