In the evening hours of Monday, 31st of October 2022, news broke on social media that Ifeanyi Adeleke, son of popular pop singer, Davido, has reportedly drown in a pool at the singer’s Banana Island residence while the his parent were in faraway Ibadan for a family gathering. The painful death of the three-year-old toddler has got the public space awash with feelings of agony, grief and despair. However, some people on social media became psychiatrists, some became investigative journalists and child-protection analysts cum judges passing insensitive and uncaring comments without caring about the bereaved parent who are yet to speak since the unfortunate incident.Social media, despite the hopes and promise -of reclaiming the public space that the traditional society had cede to increasingly individualist, modern one- it came with. The digital bridges the media platforms built has even made us more distant deepening our differences and dividing us into clusters of toxic antagonists. Some, out of lack of taste in his music or for clout, have chosen to say hurtful and insensitive things about Davido and Chioma, the bereaved parent, ranging from the numbers of people to have died around Davido and how he is supposedly using them to “renew his wealth” and the likes without consideration for the tragedy that just befell him. Unfounded rumors drawing inferences on apportioning blames on the parent, the nanny and others were the order of the day begging the question that has the vanity trophies of likes and retweets of social media has altered the way we respond to tragedy as human? https://newsroundtheclock.com/retaining-our-humanity-ifeanyi-adeleke-on-my-mind/

The Nigerian government has said it has no intention of banning any social media platform, especially Twitter, in the country again. The Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, stated this at a news conference in Abuja on Thursday. According to the Minister, the federal government will not sit by and allow any platform whatsoever to throw our nation into crisis. The government, however, noted that it will continue to monitor developments around the microblogging platform, Twitter, following its takeover by a new owner. The Minister said the suspension of the platform last year was due to the penchant of some elements to use it to destabilise Nigeria via fake news, disinformation, and hate speech. Mohammed warned that the government does not intend to ban any media from performing its duties, it would also not allow any platform to be used to plunge the country into anarchy. The minister said, ”Many have called to ask us what will become of our agreement with Twitter in view of the change in its ownership. Many have asked for our reaction following reports that there has been a spike in fake news, disinformation, and hate speech since the micro-blogging site changed ownership. Many have even asked us if another ban is in the offing? https://newsroundtheclock.com/fg-clarifies-reports-about-another-twitter-ban/

It is no secret that the reputation of APC presidential candidate Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a law-abiding man has been somewhat clouded by scandal. The Inspector General of Police received a letter from the US Consulate in Lagos in 2003 exonerating him of any criminal charges. But 19 years have passed, and the US authorities have just made documents public that support the claim that Tinubu was convicted of drug-related offences in the US. The US court, district of Illinois, made these documents available to the public on August 10, 2022. However, Peoples’ Gazette did not make it widely known until Tuesday, November 8th. Another sign of frustration from the opposition parties. The APC followers appear to believe that “it is dead as a dodo” because these documents appear to be the same as those that were distributed in 2003. https://newsroundtheclock.com/us-court-declares-tinubus-involvement-in-drug-trafficking/

Mercy Chinwo is one of the most popular Christian artistes in the country. On Tuesday, she performed at the rally of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the coming 2023 general elections. Her performance has elicited reactions from different arms of social media. Some commentators have criticized her for performing at a political event, while others have tried to make a case for the gospel artiste who tied the knot in August 2022. At the 2022 rally that took place in Akwa Ibom state, the gospel musician performed some of her most popular songs from over the years. As expected, Mercy Chinwo’s performance at the rally has been met with different reactions from fans who weigh the morality of a gospel artist performing at a political rally. Some other social media commentators have insisted that she was only doing her job as an artist who’s paid to entertain. https://newsroundtheclock.com/mercy-chinwo-nigerian-gospel-singer-raises-eyebrows-as-she-performs-at-pdp-rally/

Recently, the Federal Government confirmed the payment of half-salaries to public university lecturers. From October 14, when the strike was called off, till the rest of the month that the government believed they worked for. This payment came after ASUU’s eight-month strike. Most of the issues they agitated for and went on strike for was not fulfilled nor resolved. These lecturers resumed for their classes following the industrial court’s injunction and somehow hoping that their backlog of salaries would be paid. The Federal Government turned a deaf ear to all these demands and went ahead to enforce no-work-no-pay policy that crippled their salaries. After this payment, it was reported that Gombe ASUU has threatened to withhold students’ results, and SUU exco are going to meet, as lecturers mull sit-at-home. Other lecturers who do not have this firm disposition would still go to classes to teach. There is a plethora of questions that have begun to plague my mind since I read about this payment. How can a lecturer impart knowledge effectively to his students in his current disconcerted disposition? How many of these lecturers are conscientious enough to follow their moral inclination to act justly towards students in marking and grading? What is the fate of many students who are currently learning in various public universities in Nigeria? These questions trouble me and they should also trouble everyone who is passionate about tertiary education in Nigeria. It appears to me that lecturers who are tired of the current education system, yet cannot leave for green or greener pasture, will have to endure this seemingly harsh treatment from the government. His endurance, however, also has a ripple effect on the way students learn and pass their courses at school. https://newsroundtheclock.com/why-students-should-give-up-on-public-university-education-in-nigeria/

The spokesperson for the Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Council, Dino Melaye has described an outburst by the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi on Sunday night as unpresidential and unacceptable. Melaye in a video posted on his Twitter page on Monday said he “did not do anything to” Obi. Obi had an encounter with Melaye on Sunday night during the presidential town hall session organised by Arise TV in Abuja. Melaye however, demanded an apology from Obi, saying a presidential candidate must be calm. He said, “He was not provoked, I was seating far opposite the top seat where they were sitting. I didn’t mention his name. And I was really surprised to see that type of outburst from a presidential candidate. Is that the type of president he is going to make? Just taking on people and showing unpresidential characteristics? “I didn’t do anything. So that outburst is unwarranted, very unpresidential, and unacceptable of a leader. “A leader must be mature. One who wants to govern this country must be accommodating, must have a lot of patience, and must have perseverance. These are basic characteristics of leadership anywhere in the world,” Melaye said. https://newsroundtheclock.com/melaye-peter-obis-outburst-unpresidential-i-deserve-apology/

The All Progressives Congress and Bola Tinubu, the party’s presidential candidate, are unable to bring Nigerians together, according to Dele Momodu, director of strategic communications for the Atiku/Okowa Presidential Campaign Council. In a statement headlined “Atiku: APC’s Shettima Suffering From Amnesia – PDP Campaign Organization” and dated Wednesday, November 2, 2022, Momodu raised concern over what he called an “open disrespect for the democratic and voting rights of specific ethnic communities within their domains.” The APC presidential candidate and his vice presidential running mate were quoted as saying on Tuesday at a gathering in Lagos that the PDP’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, could not bring Nigerians together. This is how the PDP campaign director responded. Momodu said, “It is our belief that Alhaji Shettima, in a moment of deliberate amnesia, must have tried to point fingers at the specks in another man’s eyes while studiously ignoring the giant logs in his own eyes.” Momodu described the APC as a disorganised party with chieftains openly apologising to Nigerians for the undiminished damage it forced on Nigeria since 2015 which resulted in a mass exodus of APC members to the Peoples Democratic Party. He further stated, “It took almost forever for APC to achieve the simple task of constituting its Presidential Campaign Council, due to the total lack of unity in their party. It is very obvious that APC has become completely rudderless and many self-respecting members are jumping ship and being recovered by PDP. https://newsroundtheclock.com/momodu-claims-apc-tinubu-cannot-unite-nigerians/

We have made commendable growth in the black community. While we still have a milestone to cover, we must bring to notice what stage we are in development. Let us start with laying the foundation for analysis. The Dark Ages There was a time where darkness covered Europe, and the world we see was strongly believed to be a flat sheet. The truth was based on fear and human prejudices and the people lived in ignorant simplicity. The evolution from what we call the dark ages ushered in the age of exploration. Laying the foundation for innovation which was characterised by a fundamental shift in human reasoning and philosophies. A transition from just the spirit of man to an emphasis on the mind, people wanted valid answers. From that point in the 15th century till date, Europe has undergone a monumental transformation in infrastructure and civilisation. This has placed them in the top rankings of the world. Regardless, every civilisation moves through stages. To completely disregard a structural culture based on the stage they are in is ignorant. https://newsroundtheclock.com/ushering-in-a-new-era-in-black-history-and-consciousness/

When you travel by bus in Nigeria, especially those buses from Ibadan, Lagos, and Kogi, or even from somewhere to anywhere in Nigeria, chances are that you must have met some passengers with their so particular idiosyncrasies. In my travelling itinerary, I have become quite observant of these passengers and how they act or behave the way they do. I must confess these people always make travelling experience worth the wait. THE SLEEPERS These people deserve the first spot here. The moment the journey commences, they start sleeping. It is as if they were waiting for the driver to start the bus. The bad Nigerian roads and the moribund condition of the bus do not have the power to deter them from their sleep. Some even migrated from mere sleeping to loud snoring, oblivious of the chagrin they cause other passengers. These people feel too relaxed, as if they were sleeping on their own couch, even to the point of resting their head on your shoulders. They are specially made and highly peaceful with themselves, in that they do not bother about accident, kidnapping, or other road concerns. THE PREACHERS In their usual characteristic manner, they will start the prayers, asking God to come down from heaven and drive the bus himself, and covering the driver and every other person in the bus with the saving blood of Jesus. If it were a woman that anchored the prayer, and said it in Yoruba, rest assured that you’d say a quiet Amen even if you were a chronic atheist. These preachers, and I respect them a lot for their whims and caprices, will then graduate from praying to little admonition from the words of God. In fact, this little admonition always metamorphoses into threats of hell fire for fornicators, smokers, and alcoholics. Oftentimes, the threats can last for an hour or more. Few hours later, you’ll be surprised or rather shocked when you see her pick a call and she starts raining heavenly curses on her enemies or how she behaves discourteously towards other passengers in the bus. THE FOODIE These people do not have a modicum of empathy toward other passengers in the bus. All through the journey, they buy and eat anything buyable and eatable on the road. They might be sitting down at the far end of the bus and will have the temerity to send you to get them boiled corn, walnut, Fanta, dodo Ikire or akara for them. No matter how much stuff they buy, they do not have the decency to call you to join them. Sometimes, you might even wonder why they entered the same bus with you because they look more privileged by their eating standard. Few seconds after they’ve devoured all their food, they quickly join the sleeping cohort. You will be extremely fortunate if these people do not mess up the whole car with stench before you alight from the bus. https://newsroundtheclock.com/here-are-10-different-kinds-of-passengers-that-make-our-journey-by-road-memorable/

Governor Wike stated this during a media briefing at his residence in Port Harcourt on Sunday while reacting to a recent comment by Senator Ayu that he has the power to stop any candidate, particularly from Benue State, following the attacks on his person. Although most of these artistes came into limelight as a result of their stellar performance, they are products of consistency, grit and focus, especially on Instagram for a long time before eventually being noticed. Speaking at the #EndSARS Memorial on Thursday, Falz whose real name is Folarin Falana admonished Nigerian youths to vote for the right presidential candidate in 2023. Falz speaking at the End SARS memorial procession had this to say; “This is why we are here because we can never allow them to erase the legacy of the victims. I think it is important that the Nigerian youths focus on the next elections for leaders who respect justice and human rights. Those coffins are very symbolic and we don’t want to cause trouble and just remember those who laid their lives for us.” https://newsroundtheclock.com/endsars-memorial-falz-mr-macaroni-protest-in-lekki-demand-justice/

Chances are you have come across the name ‘saro’ as numerous conversations sparked around his character. Was he a victim of his circumstances? Or was he just unwise? Before we go ahead to analyze this character, let us start from the beginning. Who is Saro? Saro is the protagonist of the Kunle Afolayan classic Anikulapo. A mythology story set in the 17th-century kingdom of Oyo which explores folklore-like themes of second chances, betrayal, and what classic is complete without love and romance wink. Anikulapo interprets as ‘ he who has death in his pocket’. This power initially belonged to the mystical ‘Akala’ bird, and you can agree with me that Saro did not have any spectacular reason to be granted a second chance. However, as fate would spin it Saro was not only fortunate to live again but now had the power to give life, like literally in his pocket. Death is such a sombre topic, on the living, it incites great feelings of despair, how much time do I have left? , Have I lived purposeful enough? Death reminds us of how our mortality that at the end of every human travail is a sudden end. All these are very sober thoughts, yeah, but then Saro faces death and switches the script on us. https://newsroundtheclock.com/anikulapo-the-man-who-made-a-mockery-of-death/

It was no surprise that French striker Karim Benzema claimed the 2022 Ballon d’Or award held in Paris on Monday night. The 34-year-old thoroughly deserved to clinch the prize following an outstanding year. However, there are controversies surrounding some of the awards given in other categories. These categories include the Kopa Trophy and the Ballond’Or Féminin. Alongside Benzema, Thibaut Courtois clearly merited to win the ‘Yashin Trophy.’ This is an association football award presented annually by France Football to the best performing goalkeeper. The award is named after Russian goalkeeper Lev Yashin, and the winner is chosen by former Ballon d’Or winners. It was created in 2019. Indeed, Courtois made 59 saves during the 2021/22 Champions League campaign. That is the most ever recorded in a single season. He also made nine saves in the final, also the most ever recorded. For Benzema, he notched a total of 50 goals in 56 games for club and country in 2021-22. He went further to create 16 other goals. He was also instrumental as his teams won the La Liga, Supercopa, Nations League and Champions League. His illustrious year was also rewarded with awards like the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year, UCL Player of the Season, UCL Golden Boot, as well as the Pichichi Trophy. Winners of the FIFA Ballon d’Or are chosen by international journalists and the coaches and captains of the national teams under FIFA’s jurisdiction. The Kopa Trophy Barcelona whizkid Gavi won this year’s Kopa Trophy award, closely followed by Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga.
