TravelDubai Leader Ordered To Pay Ex-wife $728m By UK Court by Azeemokoya(op): 12:26pm On Dec 22, 2021
The ruler of the Emirate of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, has been ordered by a court in the United Kingdom to pay his ex-wife, Princess Haya bin al-Hussein, $728 million (£500 million), as divorce settlements.

In what has been described as the largest ever payout in a divorce case by a UK court, the settlement will be used to cover Princess Haya’s security costs for the rest of her life, as well as ongoing costs for the couple’s two children, Al Jalila Bint Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Sheikh Zayed Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, with an upfront payment of $333 (£251.5m) due in the next three months.

There is no fixed value on the total settlement, as the court ruled that Sheikh Mohammed should pay the annual security costs for his two children, aged nine and 14, for the rest of their lives or until a further court order is issued.

In his written judgement published on Tuesday, Mr Justice Moor found that the biggest threat facing Princess Haya and her children Jalila and Zayed, is from “Sheikh Mohammed himself, not from outside sources.”

According to evidence tended in court, Princess Haya had fled Dubai to Britain in April 2019 with her two children and filed a lawsuit against her estranged husband.

In a series of hearings concerned with custody, access and financial support, which have so far cost over £70m in legal fees, high court judges have found on the balance of probabilities that.

PoliticsNASS Lacks The Guts To Veto Buhari’s Refusal To Sign Bill – Wike by Azeemokoya(op): 12:24am On Dec 22, 2021
Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, says members of the National Assembly lack the guts and boldness to veto President Muhammadu Buhari’s withholding of assent to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

Wike was reacting to President Buhari’s refusal to sign the Bill into law on Tuesday, said the right thing for the lawmakers to do would be to override the President by using their veto power, but according to the Governor, the reverse is the case as the lawmakers are too timid and do not have what it takes to go against Buhari.

Wike added the real reason for Buhari’s refusal to assent to the Bill was because “it was part of the All Progressives Congress (APC) scheme to allegedly deny Nigerians free, fair and transparent election in 2023.”

Wike who bared his mind on Tuesday following the controversy generated by Buhari’s action, said the only way for Nigerians not to repeat the 2015 and 2019 mistakes of voting the APC-led federal government into power was to send them packing in 2023.

“Three weeks ago, I told Nigerians that there is a conspiracy not to have a free, fair, transparent election in 2023 and that conspiracy was very clear. And I told Nigerians, Mr President will not sign the Electoral Act amendment bill,” Wike said.

Wike said he knows the “modus operandi, style and strategy of the APC, and it is obvious to all discerning minds that the clause on direct primaries was inserted into the Electoral Act amendment bill as a ploy for the president to refuse assent to the bill.”

He accused the APC governors and their National Assembly members of allegedly deceiving Nigerians that they were engaged in a battle of supremacy over the issue of direct primaries, whereas they had secretly agreed to scuttle the possibility of transmitting election result electronically in 2023.

“What APC resolved in one the secret meetings they had was that their problem is not necessarily direct primaries, but the electronic transmission of result in 2023.

PoliticsAPC Govs Win Big As Buhari Refuses To Sign Electoral Act Amendment Bill by Azeemokoya(op): 12:17am On Dec 22, 2021
Governors on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have become the biggest winners following the refusal of President Muhammadu Buhari to sign the Electoral Act Amendment Bill into law.

Federal lawmakers had been angling for direct primaries for political parties in the country may have lost out as President Muhammadu Buhari has refused to append his signature to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill sent to him by the National Assembly.

The President in a letter to the lawmakers had explained his reasons for withholding assent, even as there had been agitations by some sections of Nigerians for the lawmakers to invoke the veto powers as the deadline for the president to sign the bill neared.

According to the President, it would be better to allow each political party determine its mode of choosing standard bearer for elections, a position that had also been maintained by the governors.

The President, in the letter, said the prevailing situation in the country would not allow him sign the bill.

According to him, the high cost of conducting direct primaries, the security challenge of monitoring the election, violation of citizens’ rights, and marginalization of small political parties are among other reasons for his decision to reject the bill.

The president said that it would be better to allow each political party to determine its mode of selecting candidates for election while avoiding the attendant negative ripple effect that comes with a direct primaries system.

In the letter titled: “Withholding of Assent to Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2021,” Buhari stated: “Further to the letter dated 18th November 2021 forwarded for Presidential assent, the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2021, as passed by the National Assembly, I have received informed advice from relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies of the government, and have also carefully reviewed the bill in light of the current realities prevalent in the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the circumstances.

“The Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2021, seeks to amend certain provisions of the extant Electoral Act 2010. Part of the objective of the Bill is the amendment of the present Section 87 of the Electoral Act, 2010 to delete the provision for the conduct of indirect primaries in the nomination of party candidates such that party candidates can henceforth only emerge through direct primaries.

“The conduct of direct primaries across the 8,809 wards across the length and breadth of the country will lead to a significant spike in the cost of conducting primary elections by parties as well as an increase in the cost of monitoring such elections by INEC, who has to deploy monitors across these wards each time a party is to conduct direct primaries for the presidential, gubernatorial and legislative posts.

“The addition of these costs with the already huge cost of conducting general elections will inevitably lead to a huge financial burden on both the political parties, INEC and the economy in general at a time of dwindling revenues.”

The President also disclosed the security challenges that come with the preparation of direct primaries while considering the understaffed conditions of the various security agencies.

Read also: Situation Room wants NASS to use veto power, if Buhari fails to sign Electoral Act Amendment Bill

“In addition to increased costs identified above, conducting and monitoring primary elections across 8,809 wards will pose huge security challenges as the security agencies will also be overstretched, direct primaries will be open to participation from all and sundry and such large turn-out without effective security coordination will also engender intimidation and disruptions, thereby raising credibility issues for the outcomes of such elections.

“The amendment as proposed is a violation of the underlying spirit of democracy, which is characterised by freedom of choices. Political party membership is a voluntary exercise of the constitutional right to freedom of association. Several millions of Nigerians are not card-carrying members of any political party.

PoliticsElectoral Bill: We Have Advised Buhari Accordingly – Malami by Azeemokoya(op): 8:44am On Dec 20, 2021
Nigeria’s Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), says his office has advised President Muhammadu Buhari on the Electoral Amendment Bill and it is left to him to either sign it into law or not.

The constitutional timeline for the President’s signature expires on Sunday, December 19, and with Buhari jetting back into the country from Turkey where he was for the Turkish-Africa Partnership Summit, the signs are not clear whether he will sign the Bill into law.

However, the National Assembly has the power to exercise their veto and transmute the Bill into law but most Nigerians are not confident they will want to go against the Executive.

Malami who spoke on the imbroglio that has trailed the bill since it was transmitted to the President by the National Assembly three weeks ago, said his office had officially written its legal opinion to President Buhari on the Bill and the onus is now on the President to either sign the Bill into law or not.

While fielding questions from journalists on Saturday through his Special Adviser on Media and Public Relations, Dr Umar Jibrilu Gwandu, Malami said though it was premature of him to comment on a process involving official communication between the office of the President and the office of the Attorney General of Federation and Minister of Justice without allowing the conclusion of the administration cycle, the general public would adequately and timely informed by the Office of the President on the decision.

PoliticsOsita Okechukwu Asks Tinubu Not To Run For President In 2023 by Azeemokoya(op): 7:40am On Dec 20, 2021
The Director General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Osita Okechukwu, has called on former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu not to contest for President in 2023 but should rather support a younger person from the South-East.

Okechikwu who is a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), was reacting to stories that the National Leader of the APC was getting set to run for the presidency going by recent comments credited to him.

In an interaction with newsmen in Abuja, Tinubu had stated that he would heed the call by Nigerians for him to run for President in 2023 and that he was still consulting widely and would come out with a position soon.

However, Okechukwu, in a statement on Sunday, said instead of putting himself forward, Tinubu should continue playing the kingmaker and statesman role by supporting and mentoring a young presidential aspirant from the southern part of the country.

“If I am consulted by our national leader, His Excellency, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on whether he should run or not for the exalted office of the President of Nigeria in 2023, my candid advice will be that he should use his abundant Almighty God’s endowment to unite the APC and unite the South and by extension our beloved country, by backing a candidate from the southeast,” Okechukwu said in the statement.

“It would be unstatesman like for a man like Tinubu to put himself forward at this time that the clamour for a South-East President is the loudest.

“Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu should rather pick and support a younger person from the South-East in 2023. By so doing, he would have further written his name in the annals of history.”

PoliticsPDP Will Rescue Nigeria In 2023 – Obaseki by Azeemokoya(op): 10:28am On Dec 18, 2021
The Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has knocked the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as being behind the current economic and political woes in Nigeria, saying only the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) can rescue the country in 2023.

Obaseki Only stated this when he received members of Atiku Support Group led by Chairman of Daar Communications, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, at the Government House in Benin.

He said the PDP would not allow Nigeria to remain in the wilderness.

“If Nigeria is going to be salvaged, PDP has to step into the throne to salvage this country politically. The stakes are too high; we cannot allow Nigeria to continue the way it is going,” Obaseki said.

“Our great party must come to the rescue and take over the reins of power in this country. What we see ahead is not pleasant at all. I just pray that God Almighty sees us through next year, financially, so that we can even have presidential elections.

“I don’t just see how we can continue to be deceiving ourselves. We try to prevent the country from growing by limiting and restricting imports, coming with all forms of phantom excuses to limit people from buying and importing what they cannot produce and need to live.

“On the other hand, they are restricting foreign exchange availability. They are just throwing millions of Nigerians into poverty.

“My commitment today is to our great party, the PDP. I accept the responsibility of leading our e-registration process.

“We have done a very successful pilot in Edo, which I am hoping that the new committee will adopt so that we can roll out and build membership across the country. The soul of our democracy is making sure that we build our party like institutions.

“Atiku Abubakar is a Nigerian that is committed to this country; his achievements are visible. So, he is eminently qualified to contest the position of President of Nigeria and as you know, at the end of the day, power ultimately comes from God.”

PoliticsNnamdi Kanu Is A Prisoner Of Conscience – IPOB by Azeemokoya(op): 10:32pm On Dec 17, 2021
The proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has declared its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu, a ‘Prisoner of Conscience’.

The declaration was made by the group in a statement on Friday by the group’s spokesman, Emma Powerful, who said Kanu, who is currently in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), can be compared to late South African freedom fighter, Nelson Mandela.

In the statement, IPOB insisted that Kanu did not commit any crime and was bearing the burden of the Igbo race in their quest for self-determination.

The IPOB spokesman said Kanu’s only crime was advocating for freedom due to the oppression of the people of the South-East.

“Following the extraordinary rendition of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from Kenya to Nigeria without proper documentation for doing so, and the long incarceration and detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in DSS custody, we the global movement and family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) wish to state categorically to the people of the world that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is now declared Prisoner Of Conscience,” the statement said.

“In 2015, Nnamdi Kanu was first arrested and subjected to an egregious violation of his fundamental rights.

“After his miraculous escape from the military invasion of his home in 2017, he was abducted in Kenya and renditioned to Nigeria in June this year.

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has been in DSS detention in Abuja ever since then. We, therefore, have to inform the world, most civilized countries and the African continent that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is fighting for the freedom and self-determination of his people because under the United Nations Charter, to which Nigeria is a signatory, self-determination is not a crime.

“Under the African Union Charter. to which Nigeria is a signatory, self-determination is not a crime. Under the Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, particularly Article 20, CAP A9, self-determination is not a crime.

“As a matter of fact and law, self-determination is recognized as a right, both domestically and internationally. Above all, self- determination is a political opinion, which is recognized as a fundamental right under the Nigerian Constitution.

“It’s a matter of public record that hundreds of concerned citizens exercising their rights to peaceful protest protested the incarceration of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu but were massacred in cold blood by Nigerian security services.

“In 2021 he was kidnapped by the Nigerian government in Kenya and subjected to extraordinary rendition to Nigeria against his will and against all norms and rules of international law.

PoliticsCNG Gives Buhari 3 Months To Resolve Insecurity Or Face Mass Action by Azeemokoya(op): 10:26pm On Dec 17, 2021
The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has given President Muhammadu Buhari and the Nigerian government a three-month ultimatum to resolve the lingering insecurity in the North or face massive shutdown of states in the region.

The CNG, which gave the ultimatum after a stakeholders meeting held in Sokoto State on Thursday, decried the high rate of criminal activities ranging from banditry, kidnapping to armed robbery, that has escalated in the north west, resulting in the killings and abduction of hundreds of Nigerians.

In a communique issued at the end of the meeting, the CNG said it would mobilise youths in the North-West to ground activities in the zone until government dealt with the problem of banditry and other violent crimes in the next three months.

The communique which was signed by the Sokoto State Coordinator of CNG Isah Jabbi Usman, on behalf of the group, blamed the activities of the outlawed volunteer vigilantes groups, known as Yan Sakai, for the escalation of violence in most parts of the north western states.

Usman lamented the escalating insecurity, particularly in Sokoto and called for immediate action to address the situations once and for all, while faulting both the federal and state governments for not acting promptly to tame the situation at its initial stage.

‘’We hereby place the authorities on notice that if the killings and abductions are not significantly or totally controlled within the next three months, mass action would be called that will not prelude occupying all towns in all the frontline states and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja,’’ Usman said.

PoliticsMonguno Mentions Islamic Groups Sponsoring Terrorism In Nigeria by Azeemokoya(op): 7:55pm On Dec 15, 2021
The National Security Adviser (NSA), Babagana Monguno, on Tuesday, named three prominent Islamic as sponsors and backers of terrorism in Nigeria and the Sahel region of Africa.

Monguno made the allegation while delivering a lecture at the 14th Workshop of the League of Ulamas, Preachers and Imams of Sahel countries held in Abuja.

He mentioned the groups as the Jama’at Nasr al-Islam Wal Muslimin (JNIM), Islamic and Muslim Support Group (GSIM), and the Islamic State in Greater Sahara (ISGS), and called on the Muslim clerics to call the groups to order.

“Terrorism and the rapid escalation of violent activities by militant Islamist groups in the Sahel since 2016 have been primarily driven by the Islamic State in Greater Sahara (ISGS), which mainly operates in Mali and extends to Niger Republic and Burkina Faso,” Monguno said.

“It is bolstered by activities of groups such as Jama’at Nasr al-Islam Wal Muslimin (JNIM), the Islamic and Muslim Support Group (GSIM) and ISGS, which have continued to pose an imminent threat to the stability of the region.

PoliticsNigerians To Pay More Taxes In 2022 – Finance Minister by Azeemokoya(op): 10:59am On Dec 15, 2021
The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, has warned that Nigerians will have to pay more taxes in 2022, suggesting that the Federal Government is mulling additional tariffs and levies to be introduced next year in order to boost revenue.

Ahmed made the remarks during a public hearing on the 2021 Finance Bill organized by the House of Representatives Committee on Finance in Abuja on Monday.

According to her, Nigeria must diversify its revenues from oil to cover key expenditures.

In a keynote she delivered to the Committee, the Minister explained that as of September, the Federal Government’s retained revenue was N4.56 trillion, or 75% of the budget, while the government’s share of oil revenues was N845 billion, or 56.3 percent pro-rated performance, and non-oil revenue share was N1.31 trillion, or 117.3 percent above budget.

She added that Companies Income Tax and Value Added Tax collections were N616bn and N274.4bn, representing 121 per cent and 153 per cent respectively of the pro-rata targets, while Customs collections were N418.97bn.

“This is clearly, our ongoing fiscal reforms of the last six years are yielding tangible results. However, the FMFBNP is closely studying the following issues, developments and policies:

“Current fiscal policy stance to let tax incentives with sunset provisions to naturally expire and not to automatically renew such incentives without a detailed tax expenditure cost /benefit evaluation of the relative success of the incentives before extending incentives further;

“Acceleration of projected increase tariff and excise duties (so-called ‘sin classes’) on tobacco, alcohol and carbonated drinks to fund vital expenditure on health, education and security;

TravelUK Removes Nigeria, 10 Countries From Red List by Azeemokoya(op): 8:34pm On Dec 14, 2021
Following threats of retaliation by Nigeria, the UK government has removed the country and 10 other African countries it placed on the COVID-19 Red List due to the outbreak of the Omnicron variant of the Coronavirus.

The UK Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Sajid Javid, who made the announcement while addressing Members of Parliament on Tuesday, said the rapid spread of the variant, the Red List is “now less effective in slowing the incursion of Omicron from abroad.”

The 10 countries that were placed on the list included Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

While making his address, Javid said:

“So, I can announce today that whilst we’ll maintain our temporary testing measures for international travel, we will be removing all 11 countries from the travel red list effective from 4:00 am tomorrow,” Javid added.

The UK had reintroduced the Red List in late November as a precautionary measure following the emergence of the new Omicron variant of the COVID-19.

The measure was meant to restrict people from the countries placed on the list from coming into the UK, which drew widespread condemnation around the world.

However, the removal of the countries from the Red List is also coming with a proviso that all UK arrivals from those countries must pay for and self-isolate in a pre-booked, government-approved hotel for 10 days.

TravelFG To Ban Flights To UK, Canada, Others by Azeemokoya(op): 8:00am On Dec 13, 2021
The Federal Government is set to ban flights from the United Kingdom, Canada, Argentina and Saudi Arabia from coming into the country in a retaliatory move against the countries decisions to include Nigeria in the Omicron red list countries.

The decision by the Nigerian government was contained in a leaked audio where the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, revealed that the ban on the nations would be announced on Monday or Tuesday by the Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19.

In the leaked video obtained by various media houses, the Minister is quoted stressing that the decision to ban flights from the affected countries was a retaliatory move and would be made public by the Presidential Steering Committee (PSC).

“Also, there is a case of Saudi Arabia, which put Nigeria on the banned list – no visa, no travel, et cetera. So, also Canada. So, today, there was a meeting, I participated in a zoom meeting, COVID-19 task force, just for your information also.

“We have given our input in aviation, it is not acceptable by us and we recommend that those countries – Canada, the UK, Saudi Arabia, and Argentina be also put on Red List, as they did similarly to us.

“If they don’t allow our citizens to go into their countries, who are their airlines coming to pick from our country?

“So, I am very sure that in the next few days, between now and Monday, or perhaps Tuesday, at maximum, all those countries will be put on the Red List from the PSC (Presidential Steering Committee) from the task force of COVID-19. Once they are put on the red list, which means they are banned, of course, their airlines will be banned.

CelebritiesFFK Hits Back At Estranged Wife, Precious, Calls Her Heartless by Azeemokoya(op): 3:38pm On Dec 11, 2021
Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, popularly called FFK, has hit back at his estranged wife, Precious Chikwendu, calling her a heartless mother with a bipolar disorder.

FFK was reacting to claims made by Precious through a court affidavit that the former minister has erectile dysfunction and that she did not have sex with him for six years.

According to Precious in the court affidavit, FFK never consummated his six-year relationship with her because he is impotent. Sge added that the four children they had in the marriage was through artificial insemination.

She also told the court that the former minister did not perform any rites before their marriage nor paid her bride price, and prayed the court to declare that she was never married to Fani-Kayode.

She further accused the ex-minister of assaulting her while they were married, adding that the he lied to her that his marriage to his third wife had ended.

But reacting to the allegations through his lawyer, Ayodeji Sunday Ibikunle, FFK denied that he physically abused her while they were married.

“We are constrained to point out the fact that Miss Precious Chikwendu, the former partner of our client Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, Sadaukin Shinkafi, is suffering from bipolar disorder and schizophrenia and we acknowledge the fact that she is totally insane.

“Ordinarily, we cannot be expected to respond to the crass, filthy, delusional, salacious, disgraceful and absurd allegations of an insane person. We appreciate the fact that Precious is clinically unstable, is as mad as a hatter and is prone to telling monstrous lies and making delusional statements.

“A glaring example of her degenerating mental state is the pernicious and specious lie and diabolical fabrication from the pit of hell that any of Chief Femi Fani-Kayode’s sons is suffering from COVID 19 or that any of them has head injuries.

HealthCovid-19 Vaccines Not Best For Africa – Expert by Azeemokoya(op): 3:30pm On Dec 11, 2021
A researcher at the Nigeria Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), Professor Richard Adegbola, has raised that alarm at the current Covid-19 vaccines being produced, saying they are not the best for Africa.

Adegbola also warned African countries to be wary of the vaccines being donated to African countries as he does not think that they are the best for the people of the continent as none of them has been evaluated in the continent.

Adegbola, an elected member of the Sabin Vaccine Institute Board of Directors in Washington D.C., stated this at a meeting on the implementation strategy on COVID-19 vaccine development held at NIMR in Lagos on Friday.

According to him, nobody will take a vaccine in the U.S. or UK that has not been evaluated in their setting, noting that a vaccine that has high efficacy in the UK may not have a high efficacy in Africa.

He also maintained that producing a vaccine in “our settings would help to evaluate the efficacy of such a vaccine on the people of the continent.”

“I don’t think the ones available now are the best for Africans because none of them has been evaluated here.

“Nobody will take a vaccine in the U.S. or UK that has not been evaluated in their settings and a vaccine that has a high efficacy in the UK may or may not have high efficacy here in Africa,” he said.

Adegbola also noted that Africa produced only one per cent of vaccination being used in the continent, and called for the prioritisation of safety as a key element in development.

He further explained that vaccine production is different from when drugs or chemicals are being produced, noting that safety is very crucial.

Buhari gave the order on Friday following the escalating killings of innocent Nigerians in Sokoto State in the past few days, culminating in the burning to death of 42 travellers by bandits in the state on Wednesday.

The Sokoto State government had, in a statement, confirmed the incident in a statement by Governor Aminu Tambuwal’s spokesman, Muhammad Bello:

Politics‘father’ Of Bitcoin, Craig Wright, Wins $54bn Ownership Case by Azeemokoya(op): 4:32pm On Dec 09, 2021
The self-acclaimed ‘father’ and creator of Bitcoin, Craig Wright, has become the 26th richest man in the world after winning a whopping $54bn BTC ownership case.

Wright won the court case which supposedly confirms his status in the crypto community. Wright had been dragged to court by the family of his late business partner, Dave Kleiman, over the possession of 1.1 million Bitcoin, which is worth $54 billion.

Kleiman’s family had demanded that the late computer security expert deserves half of the Bitcoin assets, which they claimed he and Wright created, but was stolen by the latter following Kleiman’s death.

There have been contention as to the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto (a pseudonym) who is credited for creating and mining the first Bitcoin in 2009, with some people laying claim to the name, Wright being one of them.

In 2016, he stated that he was Nakamoto, but his claim was disputed. However, the lawsuit in Miami, United States, has renewed Wright’s assertion.

Kleiman’s family had also fueled Wright’s claim during the lawsuit, despite the jury voting in favour of Wright to own the 1.1 million BTC.

The court decision means Wright’s networth is estimated to be above $54 billion, placing him in 26 position on Forbes billionaires list, above David Thompson & Family who is worth $53.3 billion, and just below Robin Zeng, valued at $56.6 billion.

PoliticsIgbo People Only Care For Political Appointments, Not Development – Ngige by Azeemokoya(op): 9:46am On Dec 09, 2021
Dr. Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour, has accused his Igbo people of only being interested in political appointments and not the development of their region.

Ngige who made the allegations during an interview with Chaninels Television, said the people of the South-East have not appreciated the infrastructural development of the region being put together by President Muhammadu Buhari as what they prefer is getting political appointments from the federal government.

Ngige added that President Buhari does not understand the mentality of the Igbos and what they want, which is why the people do not appreciate the developmental strides of the president in the South-East.

“President Muhammadu Buhari does not understand the people of the South-East. My people love appointments. They don’t care about development and that is where Mr. President didn’t get them well.

“Mr. President felt that by giving them infrastructure, they will be happy. In the mind of the President, he is saying ‘if I empower you through your fertilizer plant in Ebonyi state, give loans, credits and grants to farmers in Abakaliki, Ebonyi, Imo, that our people will be happy.’ But these people just love appointments.

“They don’t want such projects coming into the region.”

He added that though former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan gave more Igbos political appointments during their tenures, the South-East has remained underdeveloped.

“We had plenty of appointments during Obasanjo and Jonathan. For example, the Enugu airport has been dilapidated over the years.

“We have had four aviation ministers: Kema Chikwe, Fidelia Nnjeze, Osita Chidoka, and Stella Oduah. How come your airport is dilapidated?

The Nigerian Senate has condemned the travel ban imposed on Nigerian travelers by the United Kingdom over the detection of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus in the country.

During plenary on Tuesday, the Senate called for the urgent reversal of the UK’s decision to add Nigeria to its COVID-19 red list.

Following the consideration of a motion sponsored by Sen. Ike Ekweremadu titled “Need for Government of the United Kingdom to remove Nigeria from its COVID-19 Red List,” the Nigerian Senate said the ban on Nigerian travelers was quite uncalled for

The Senate advised the UK government to be “sensitive to the diplomatic relations between both countries when making decisions that affect Nigerian citizens.”

The Senate also urged the Federal Government to engage the British authorities in reversing Nigeria’s inclusion on the list.

It also called on the President Muhammadu Buhari administration to remain firm in the enforcement of necessary protocols in the containment of every COVID-19 variant in Nigeria.

Coming under Orders 42 and 52 of the Senate Rules, Ekweremadu noted with satisfaction the efforts of the Government of Nigeria in the containment and treatment of COVID-19 cases.

“Nigeria is among the countries with the lowest cases of COVID-19. The decision by the British Government to include Nigeria in its COVID-19 list, with its concomitant implications, will affect many citizens of Nigeria, who had planned to spend their Christmas and New Year holiday with their families.

“The Senate is also worried that Nigerians with genuine needs to visit the U.K within this period will be denied visas and those with visas will not be allowed to enter the U.K.”...
