SportsWhy Tottenham Should Sell Harry Kane by Azeemokoya(op): 9:32am On Aug 14, 2021
Forget all the shenanigans behind closed doors regarding Spurs top scorer Harry Kane. The reality remains that his future at Tottenham still hangs in the balance despite his effort to force over a move to team up with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

Dany Levy, Spurs chairman, is a strict negotiator. He would want to get every penny on the England captain. Kane has not hidden his intention of wanting out of the club, which he announced shortly before the Euros. His reasons are relatively straightforward – lack of trophies which is unthinkable for a player who has netted over 200 goals for the North London club.

At 27, Kane, who wants a move to Manchester City, is expected to be amongst elite footballers who have experienced success at the highest level but unfortunately for Kane he has been very unlucky with trophies. His last attempt being at the recently concluded European championships where the Three Lions lost the title to Italy on penalties.

Although Spurs new manager, Nuno Espirito Santo, has said the matter would be dealt with privately, Both parties need to make their decision on time before the transfer window closes. City is not ready to cough out the 160m Euros Spurs want for the man.

His future now lies with him. This can trigger a meeting with Levy. The outcome could make him reduce the asking price and re-invest the funds into new players.

Levy should cash in on Harry Kane now
The right time he can make a huge amount on the club’s academy product is now. This is owing to his recent form in the European Championships.

So, allowing Kane to secure his move will be better for Spurs the more. The new players they would invest the money on can quickly settle into the side. Kane on the other hand will continue his sojourn in the English League.

Spurs have nothing to lose on the club’s graduate, but selling him to City early enough can help both sides to focus on their season and give us top-class actions.

SportsThe Premier League Is Back by Azeemokoya(op): 9:29pm On Aug 13, 2021
The highly anticipated Premier League is back tonight as Arsenal opens the 2021/22 season with a trip to Brentford.

The Premier league is expected to live up to its billing again this year where fireworks will be expected from two teams that play attractive football opening the season when Brentford host Arsenal on Friday night at the recently opened Brentford Community Stadium.

Arsenal might not have had a successful pre-season, but the Gunners can turn on the screw and get maximum points on the night to newly promoted Brentford. Anything other than a win will probably put more dent in Arsenal’s fragile confidence going into this match.

That aside, I will be predicting the top 6, the three teams that might be relegated, and the winner of the top scorer prize and I will be starting my predictions from the later.

Who will win the golden ball in Premier League 2021/22 season?
The Premier League boasts some prolific goalscorer, but Harry Kane went away hast season’s golden booth prize. The English captain has proven his mettle on many occasions.

However, the speculations surrounding his future could hamper his goalscoring contribution. Being in the top ten all-time goal scorers of the Premier League, it’s easy to pick Harry Kane as the likely winner again. What could affect that is his Premier League future with Spurs. He has told the club that he wants to leave.

Kane is likely to be followed closely by Mohammed Salah of Liverpool and Chelsea’s returnee Romelu Lukaku. If the Lanky Belgian keep his goalscoring form intact as evident from his last two seasons in the Italian Serie A. Then he his likely to be a hot contender for the golden boot, considering that he is no stranger to the Premier League.

It obviously won’t be a surprise to see Lukaku in the mix if he stays fit.

Who will make the top six in the Premier League 2021/22 seasons?
The traditional top six teams in the league have been; Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Tottenham for many years until recently.

With the likes of Leicester City and West Ham now regularly mixing it up with the big boys. It is expected to be another fierce battle. Teams like Wolves, Brighton, and Leeds United are not even talking much about their signings but could upset many top teams in the coming season. This is why there are likely to be goals galore Manchester United host Leeds United at the early kick off tomorrow.

The return of Lukaku does mean that Chelsea have put themselves in contention for the Premier League trophy. Having such a winner and goal scorer in their squad is a definitely a bonus.

The missing puzzle for Manchester City could be the focal striker. That’s why Pep Guardiola wants Harry Kane. It is now unsure if Daniel Levy will want to do a deal with a fellow Premier League rival and he also known to be a shrewd negotiator. He will want to get every penny for the English striker. But as it stands, Kane will still be wearing the colours of Tottenham ahead of their opener against the Premier League champions.

Top four conversations have now become the top seven talks
The top four conversation has now changed to the top six in the Premier League. However, with the UEFA Conference League, I will predict the top seven as the 7th place team can be guaranteed European action depending on the winner of the Europa League and Carabao Cup.

Based on the team’s preparation for this season see my prediction below:

1. Chelsea FC

2. Manchester City

3. Manchester United

4. Liverpool

5. Arsenal FC

6. Leicester City

7. Tottenham Hotspurs

PoliticsHuman Rights Activist, Mohammed Fawehinmi, Passes On by Azeemokoya(op): 8:25am On Aug 13, 2021
Human rights activist, Mohammed Fawehinmi, has passed on. He was the first child of late human rights activist and lawyer, Gani Fawehinmi. According to reports, he died on Wednesday, August 11, in Lagos following some breathing difficulty. He died at the age of 52.

Mohammed Fawehinmi was a graduate of Business Administration, University of Lagos, 1991. He obtained an LLB degree from the University of Buckingham, England. Subsequently, he was called to Nigerian Bar in 1998.

Before his passing, he was the Head of Mohammed Fawehinmi Chambers and the Director of Nigerian Law Publications Limited. He was also the Director of Books Industries Nigeria Limited, and Director of Gani Fawehinmi Library & Gallery Limited.

In 2003, Fawehinmi had a horrible accident in Lagos which affected his spinal cord and left him on a wheelchair. His death comes as a shock to those who knew him. Many persons have commiserated with his family as they pay tributes to him.

President Buhari eulogizes the late activist
In his condolence message, President Muhammadu Buhari noted that the late Mohammed Fawehinmi did justice to the memory of his late father, Gani Fawehinmi. He sent his message on Thursday, through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, on Thursday.

The statement reads, ‘’President Muhammadu Buhari commiserates with the family of the late irrepressible lawyer, Gani Fawehinmi, over the death of their son, Mohammed. The President condoles with Ganiat, mother of the deceased; and the entire family, urging them to find comfort in God, who gives and takes. And to draw consolation in the fact that the departed robustly fought a debilitating condition, which confined him to the wheelchair for many years.”

“His body may have been broken, but his spirit was virile, agile, and he kept the flag of the family flying; doing justice to the memory of his late father.’’

Governor Sanwo-Olu speaks on Fawehinmi’s passing
The Governor of Lagos state, Babajide Sanwo-Olu released a statement through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Gboyega Akosile. He described the passing of Fawehinmi as a colossal loss to the civil society movement in Nigeria.

“It is with a deep sense of sorrow that I commiserate with the family, friends and associates of the Late Mohammed Fawehinmi. He was undoubtedly a great Nigerian, passionate human rights activist and champion of a true Nigeria.”

“As a civil rights activist, he spent his life in the service of humanity and particularly for the emancipation of the Nigerian people. Mohammed Fawehinmi was as consistent as his father, the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi. He kept the flame of his father burning by fighting for the masses even on his wheelchair. The late Mohammed did not live under the shadows of his father as he had grown to become a dependable comrade…’’

Human Rights group mourns late Fawehinmi
The Centre for Human and Socioeconomic Rights described the death of Fawehinmi as ‘’shocking.‘’ In an interview with News Agency of Nigeria, the National President of the group, Alex Omotehinse said,

“The fact remains that among the children of the late legal icon, Mohammed was the only one who identified with us and remained with us, despite the challenges he faced.”

“Mohammed stood with us in the struggle to defend the masses. Now that he has again dropped the baton, a very big vacuum has been created. It is only Mohammed that carried the mantle, despite his health challenges.”

“When some of us see him, we believe Gani is still alive. Because he was bold, courageous, spoke like his father, and never looked at his challenges.”

May his soul rest in peace.

SportsTokyo Olympics: Same Old Story For Team Nigeria by Azeemokoya(op): 1:13pm On Aug 07, 2021
It has taken Team Nigeria ten days after the Tokyo 2020 Olympics began to win it’s first medal.

Blessing Oborududu made history to become the first Nigerian wrestler to win a medal at the Olympics when she won silver. This was followed by African Champion, Ese Brume who also won bronze in the long jump event.

As at the time of going to press, Nigeria languishes in the 72nd position on the medals table.

Where can Team Nigeria win gold?
The only reliable hand is Funke Adekurounye. However, that has been shattered after she lost her last 16 bout by fall while leading 8-2 against Anastasia Nichita of Moldova.

It was hoped that the pressure on Funke won’t lead to an upset, but that has happened eventually. Countries that have seen sport as a serious business have been preparing for the Olympics six years before. But that is the opposite in Nigeria.

The athletes are left to train on their own for years. They are only pouting in the camp a month to the tournament. Thus, magic is expected to be performed. It is now becoming same of the same for Team Nigeria. One wonders why the same mistake is being repeated and the stakeholders expected results.

The only difference this time around to the past competitions is government hosting and promising athletes rewards if they win medals. But an athlete who is not fully fit or prepared for an event will end up fumbling on the world stage.

PoliticsWhy Mala Buni Must Step Down As APC Chairman by Azeemokoya(op): 9:27am On Aug 07, 2021
The Supreme Court judgment concerning the Ondo State election, which upheld Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu is a hint of what the All Progressives Congress might go through in court, in 2023 if all status quo remains with Mala Buni as its acting Chairman.

Mala Buni is a serving Governor and the Nigerian constitution, which is more potent than any other provisions of the law, prevents him from holding another position not attached to that office.

Need to learn lessons
The interim chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Buni, is not on a term duration. Thus, there is a lacuna in the constitution and as a serving governor, Buni enjoys immunity. This why he was not joined in the suit. But from the way things are currently, the ruling party are yet to learn their lessons.

The opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had internal issues in 2015. This made them experience a lot of defection that eventually reduce their strength across the country in led to losing the 2015 presidential elections.

As it stands, the ruling party looks power-drunk and legalising illegality. The former legal adviser of the party, Muiz Banire, had summed it up as recklessness. This is following the insistence of the party on going ahead with the ward congress. As much as the notice of the process was signed by Buni, many opposition parties sees this as opportunity.

The Zamfara case study
Looking at the case of Zamfara, where the former Governor Yari approached the court to legalise the primary election he organised but ended up costing the state all seats won in the 2019 election. The same could be said of both Rivers and Bayelsa states.

Although President Buhari as the party leader named the Yobe Governor in the interim position, holding ward congress in some states with the notice being signed by Buni, who is currently occupying two offices means the ruling party is sitting on the keg of gun powder.

Keyamo warnings
The likes of Festus Keyamo, who knows the intricacies in interpreting the law by different Nigerian judges, have been calling for the removal of Buni.

Seeing how Akeredolu escaped being removed from office by the whiskers is a sign of what is to come. APC needs to quickly advise Buni to step down. Allowing a neutral personality not occupying any office to take charge will help. In the months ahead as the party prepares for it’s national convention.

Even the ward congress that was held witnessed some issues with some party members aggrieved. For the state that has suspended theirs, another notice should be issued to the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC). This time around, it must be signed by another person to avoid recklessness the APC is about going into.

The Anambra Election
Ahead of the Anambra election, Buni was the one that signed Andy Uba’s form. If the APC candidate wins the poll, there is likely to be a problem for the APC as the petitioner will want to join Buni in the suit this time around by correcting the mistake made by Eyitayo Jegede, the governorship aspirant of the PD in Ondo State.

To minimise the risks of electoral disaster in 2023, Buni must leave the chairman’s seat to avoid the APC losing future elections under various technicalities of the law.

Politicians in Nigeria are reacting to the victory of Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu Odunayo (SAN), at the Supreme Court in Abuja where four judges on Wednesday upheld Mr Akeredolu’s victory against the dissenting judgement of three other justices.

The dismissal by the apex court, brings to an end the saga that ensued after the October 10, 2020, Ondo governorship election.

PoliticsSunday Igboho: The Government’s Alibi For Failure by Azeemokoya(op): 8:03am On Jul 26, 2021
The recent arrest of the embattled leader of the Yoruba Nation movement, Sunday Adeyemo (aka Sunday Igboho), highlights the capability of the Nigerian government to track whosoever it wants.

But the valid question on the minds of many Nigerians is why the same government seems to lack solutions to the security crisis. Many wonder why the government is yet to form an alliance with its counterparts in Niger, Chad, Cameroon in bringing terrorists to book.

Some Nigerian states have become a no-go area due to the fear of kidnapping and killing by either criminal Fulani herdsmen or bandits. These criminal elements have turned kidnapping into a huge business venture. It is so bad, that an Emir in Katsina was seen weeping after being released by his captors. If a palace is not a safe haven, where is?

When the Emir wept on his return from captivity, it became apparent that all is not well. These criminals are so emboldened, that they whisked away the traditional ruler and 13 members of his family who are still in their den. It is understandable that the Emir is traumatized by his ordeal and the fate of his family members.

Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Igboho become more popular
But it appears that the priority of the Nigerian government is terribly misplaced. Extraditing the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, and pushing for the extradition of Igboho, who has been clamouring for the Yoruba Nation, seems to be top of the agenda. Whereas it should be securing the lives and property of its citizens.

Nigerian actor, Yomi Fabiyi, has got himself into a fix after releasing his new movie titled ‘Oko Iyabo’ (Iyabo’s husband).

The film centres around fellow Nollywood actor, Olanrewaju Omiyinka, popularly known as Baba Ijesha, who faces accusations of inappropriate relations with a minor.

SportsWhat Next For Cristiano Ronaldo After The European Championships? by Azeemokoya(op): 1:41am On Jul 07, 2021
Cristiano Ronaldo has always been a showman and he doesn’t heistate to show his mettle on the pitch.

Normally players in their mid-thirties will be thinking about retirement. But it seems to be different with Ronaldo as he aims to continue breaking and setting new records.

Thus it was no surprise to see him become the highest goal scorer in the history of the European Championship. He scored a brace against Hungary in their opener and the feat drew him nearer to becoming the highest goal scorer for the national teams.

In classic showman style, the Juventus talisman also got into the news when he shoved Coca Cola bottles aside during his press conference; that singular action cost the beverage drink company $4bn.

With just four goals behind the current record holder, reaching and surpassing the record is easily achievable.

Will Ronaldo leave Juventus this season?
After Juventus failed to defend their 9th straight Scudetto, speculations continue to surround Ronaldo’s future.

First, the Portuguese captain seems to be dissatisfied with the Old Lady for sacking Andrea Pirlo after just one season in charge.

The second reason relates to his comment at the end of the season. Ronaldo stated that he had achieved everything he needed to achieve with the Bianconeri, having won all the domestic trophies and individual awards. The comment hinted at a return to Sporting Lisbon, where it all started for the legend.

He has also been linked with a return to Manchester United and Real Madrid. PSG would also like to have the Champions League winner. No doubt, any team would want a match-winner in their squad.

But anything is possible as the Ronaldo is yet to decide on his future. His recent comment during the press conference shows that Ronaldo may have something up his sleeves, yet he stated that his attention is focussed on the Euros.

What’s on Ronaldo’s mind?
This means two things are on the mind of Ronaldo at the moment – helping Portugal defend their Euro title and setting personal records. These he can achieve with the support of his teammates.

PoliticsNnamdi Kanu Arrested: Nigerians Question Fg’s Intentions by Azeemokoya(op): 1:32am On Jul 07, 2021
The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu was arrested in the United Kingdom and brought to the Federal High Court, Abuja by heavy security operatives. According to reports, he was blindfolded and handcuffed, with legs chained as he was sneaked into the courtroom by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).

The prosecution stated that Kanu jumped bail. Hence, he wanted the accused to be remanded in custody of the DSS. The application was granted by the court. Thereafter, the case was adjourned till July 26, 2021 by Justice Muritala Nyanko. The press were barred from making any videos the IPOB leader as he was shielded and taken through the back door.

Offences against Nnamdi Kanu
In a press conference on Tuesday in Abuja, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), listed the Kanu’s alleged offences.

They include jumping bail, engaging in subversive activities and inciting violence through various media outlets.

Malami continued, “The self acclaimed leader of the proscribed secessionist IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, has been arrested through the collaborative efforts of Nigerian intelligence and security services. He has been brought back to Nigeria in order to continue facing trial. This was after disappearing while on bail regarding 11 count charges against him. Recent steps taken by the Federal Government saw to the interception of the fugitive Kanu on Sunday, the 27th day of June, 2021.”

“It is recalled that Kanu was arrested on 14th October, 2015 on 11 count charges bordering on terrorism, treasonable felony, managing an unlawful society, publication of defamatory matter, illegal possession of firearms and improper importation of goods, among others.

A judge at the Federal High Court, Abuja revoked Kanu’s bail that was granted him on health grounds. And issued a bench warrant for his arrest on the same date, over his failure to appear in court for hearing.

“He has, upon jumping bail, been accused of engaging in subversive activities that include inciting violence through television, radio and online broadcasts against Nigeria and Nigerian State and institutions.

“Kanu was also accused of instigating violence especially in South-eastern Nigeria; that resulted in the loss of lives and property of civilians, military, para military, police forces. And destruction of civil institutions and symbols of authorities.”

Nigerians react to his arrest
Former presidential aspirant and human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore said, “There is nothing wrong with asking for self-determination. Nnamdi Kanu has rights to ask for self-determination. I’m here to see that Nnamdi Kanu gets justice, but unfortunately he has been moved to be detained. I fear for his safety. He was hooded. This is despicable. This just shows that we are in the Banana Republic.

“The way he was treated was despicable. The system has a way of abducting people and bringing them to court. I have been abducted like that before.”

SportsEuro 2020: Stage Set For The Big Boys by Azeemokoya(op): 1:23am On Jul 07, 2021
The Euro 2020 has reached the quarter-finals stage. This is the point where the boys are expected to have been separated from the men.

But this tournament has taken an unexpected twist. World champions, France, and defending champions, Portugal, were sent packing by Switzerland and Belgium, respectively.

No doubt, both Portugal and France are among the top-ranked teams. But the recent development in the competition shows an increase in technical skill and talent is beginning to catch up on the ‘big boys’.

All from group of death sent home
The group of death in Euro 2020 lived up to its name as all the qualifiers – France, Portugal, and Germany – have now left the tournament. We are left with the Czech Republic that shocked the Netherlands, Ukraine, and Denmark, who qualified as one of the best losers. Also in the running are England, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, and Belgium.

However, Spain have now sent Switzerland packing. Even though they ended the game with 10 men, Switzerland held Spain to a draw till the very end. The subsequent nail-biting penalty shootout ended with Spain winning 3-1.

And in the other quarter final match of the night, Italy beat Belgium by two goals to one. Belgium’s best position in the tournament was as runners-up in 1980. Eden Hazard, Romelu Lukaku, Kevin De Bryune will be 30+ in the next edition. Having finished third in the 2018 World Cup, hopes were high for this golden generation to lift silverware. But it wasn’t meant to be.

Euro 2020 is the biggest opportunity for England
The departure of some of the big teams has given England the opportunity to win the title. The best position England has ever got to in the history of the tournament was third place in 1968 and semi-finalists in 1996.

In front of the Three Lions, the present hurdle is Ukraine, who defeated Sweden in the last minutes of the extra time. On paper, England should defeat Ukraine at the Stadio Olimpico. However, in this tournament, write no one-off, and being overconfident can land any team in trouble.

Defeating Germany in front of the fans at the Wembley Stadium provides a spark for Gareth Southgate’s men. They must give their all and concentrate throughout the game, as a slight lack of focus can be costly.

England is also expected to be high on confidence going into the tournament with clean sheets in four straight games. Now that Harry Kane has finally found the back of the net, they are expected to offer more threats in the future. If they turn up their game, it might be hard for Ukraine to stop them.

Ukraine will be proud of its achievement – its first quarter-finals in the history of the tournament. So, being defeated by England would still be a job well done by Andriy Shevchenko.

Don’t write off Italy and others
No one should write off the Azurris as they finished their group game with a perfect record. But Austria revealed some of their frailties in the last 16 clash. Roberto Mancini needs to tinker the team further for the likes of Chiellini, Bonucci to bow out in style with a trophy.

Wednesday: Public Lecture
The public lecture and symposium is always the real deal for the students as it is boasts great topics. It was held at the Obasanjo Multipurpose Hall of the University.

Last year, veteran journalist Mojeed Alabi of the Premium Times Centre for Investigative Journalists gave a lecture on the Ethics of Journalism.

This year was also quite interesting as media experts from various fields of journalism were present. They shared from their collective wealth of knowledge and experience about the theme – ‘Beyond Grades: Meeting Demands Of The Media Industry‘.

The speakers charged the students to get fired up to overthrow those who have hijacked the profession. They did justice with their teaching and admonished the students to take their rightful position in the media industry.

SportsNovak Djokovic: A Role Model For Upcoming Tennis Players by Azeemokoya(op): 11:04am On Jun 22, 2021
After overcoming another early scare in the final of the recently concluded Roland Garros, there is a lot for young tennis players to learn from Novak Djokovic.

The Serb found himself in trouble on Sunday. However, he fought back from two sets down to beat Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final of the French Open.
He had suffered the same problem in the quarter-finals against Italian, Lorenzo Musetti, who had to retire from the game due to a stomach upset. Novak Djokovic didn’t make the same mistake against clay master, Rafa Nadal.
As Djokovic became the only player to have stopped the Spaniard on clay twice, many were expecting the number one ranked player to easily dispatch.

But Tsitsipas, who earned more match wins than anyone else on the ATP Tour in 2021, and who has enjoyed clay-court success with titles in Monte Carlo and Lyon gave Novak a run for his money.

Djokovic’s resilience was the answer
The question many have been asking is whether the younger generation can translate tour-level talent into success on the biggest stage of all. Djokovic answered that with resilience on the court.

Being a player who has mastered a five-set, the format is long and arduous on body and mind. Djokovic once again proves that he has the physical and mental ability to outlast even the most talented opponents.

Jobs/Vacancies7 Types Of Employees In An Organization by Azeemokoya(op): 2:41pm On Jun 18, 2021
People exhibit different characters at work and in this interesting article, Blessing Enenaite explores seven types of employees in a workplace.

Some may appear to show up with a nice personality at the beginning because they want to be accepted in a particular setting. However, they drift and show their true personality in no time. Their reactions could be stimulated by their environment.

In an organization, the character of an employee is determined by how he or she is being treated at work. While some employees have a favorable work environment, there are some work environments that drain its employees consistently.

Let’s take a look at the seven types of employees in an organization.

1. The inconsistent employee
This category of employees are usually nonchalant with their work. They do not keep to deadlines. Giving excuses for not turning in work as at when due is in their anatomy. An employee who is not willing to work at a given period will procrastinate until he or she has little time left to complete the set task.

This group of employees are known for using words like ‘’I cannot kill myself’’ and ‘’Life na small small’’.

2. The competitive employee
Some individuals want to be seen as the best at all times. They crave for acceptance among their bosses and strive to be the leader of any group task. Usually, their goal is to be the staff of the month or bag any award that may be put up by their organization. Besides, they do not allow any opportunity to shine escape them. Punctuality, diligence, and consistency are their trademark. Hence, they are easily noticed by their bosses.

3. The gossippers
In every organization, this group of employees exist. They are in the know of every happening in the office. Their penchant for petty gist is matchless. Regularly, they have one tale to tell about another employee.

Their discussions are not limited to the work environment. They can go as far as digging through the private lives of members of staff in a bid to have enough gossip to go round. At times, they can cause disparity among the staff with their wagging tongues.

4. The unfriendly group
Some workers simply desire a job that can pay their bills without having to form a relationship with their colleagues. Often, this category of people do not mingle for any informal discussion at their work place. All they are concerned about is work related discussions. Once it is closing time, they go home without exchanging pleasantries. Their work may not be perfect at all times but they cannot be found among the less serious folks at work.
