hmmm you got me hooked. I asked myself that fundamental question again and again: What is the worth of my life as a Nigerian?

I took a trip down memory lane to my primary school days where a sense of brotherhood was birthed in me and I remembered that there were no water for us to drink nor any well or tap provided to fetch from whenever we ran out of the bucketful allotted for the day. ....years later I realised the brain doesn't function at its optimum if the body is thirsty not to talk of the effect of the attendant stress on a young body when the teacher vents her anger on a shut brain. Presently, I see young pupils , beneath whose shoeless feet are gold , lead, rich soils that houses wealth being stolen by clueless politicians to whom fate has entrusted their destinies looking for water to sip in response to nature's call , and I can feel their frustrations as their eyes ask " what is my life's worth as a Nigerian?"

My high school was not different as packs of borders like jackals hunt for water they have paid for in their school fees as the school wells were seasonal and the students were to be blamed for it. Any colour of water were welcomed as " alum" magic awaited them. That none of us succumbed to the cold hands of death through typhoid infection still baffles me.
Years later ,gleefully gaining admission into one of the best Fed universities in Nigeria I had thought i was going to enjoy the beauty of the universality of knowledge that the university ideals are known for globally but I was broken hearted. For example, the university, with all her intimidating Engineering edifices and academic show offs couldn't even generate enough water to flush the schools' conveniences which left my imaginative memory messy for a long time. That ,casted a serious doubt in my trust in our universities' claims of being centers of learning if such knowledge therefrom couldn't make water available to increase my life's worth as a Nigerian.

But there is hope........to be continued.

Malam Annass, y are u bringing this out again? A southern Kaduna too would also give narratives of how they killed their people before the zonkwa massacre which I'm very aware of. I remember what happened to non- Hausa Fulani in Kaduna city under Makarfi n in Zaria under Yero and give you unreported cases of unprovoked violence and death from Taraba through Benue ,Nasarawa, Kaduna, Plateau, etc but will that help us? Reminding ourselves about it without a sincere approach to solving the cause of the violence would only promote more violence and we would remain caught up in the cycle of lies, hatred, blame trading and gory deaths. A sovereign national conference would solve this where our rules of engagements can be discussed.

Life is sooo cheap these days in Naija because something fundamental is wrong with our humanity as reflected in our comment here. The church did a lot to educate the black race. The Europeans govt came to Africa to explore and exploit resource. The church followed to educate the black people through its mission work. The church has done a lot for the liberation of human race. The abundance of churches is not the reason we are layback. We only cover up our act with any loop holes we can find. Our politicians exploit loop holes in the constitution to their advantage. The same way they exploit religious sentiment to stay relevant....You know why it is still working because the people are generally layback. Sentiment is enough to win our heart. We they don't win using religion, the use tribe or social class differences... we truely have a long way to go.

Yes the church did a lot and are still doing a lot : we can't forget missionary schools,hospitals, charity homes etc nor can we fail to acknowledge their human and community development strides. A lot of examples easily come to our minds - Mary Slessor's saving twin babies from the evil of superstition, Missionary volunteer teachers ,nurses, preachers, etc using their work and fundraising skills to bring development to our communities unlike our indigenous pastors. What I'm saying we need more better schools than more 'churches' for us to grow. We can overcome our shortcomings not by praying alone but by the deliberate total development of the human person which starts very early in life . Felix Navidad and happy Boxing day.
