PoliticsBREAKING: Another Ex-nigerian Governor Convicted Of Fraud by babs4all(op): 2:43pm On Jun 12, 2018
Few weeks after a former Taraba governor, Jolly Nyame, was jailed 14 years for fraud, the Federal Capital Territory High Court has found former Plateau State governor, Joshua Dariye, guilty of fraud.

Mr Dariye was charged for allegedly diverting N1. 161.9 billion while he served as governor of the North-central state.

He was brought to court on a 23-count charge for the alleged offence by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC in 2007.

Although Mr Dariye’s lawyer, Kanu Agabi, questioned the authenticity of evidence adduced in court against his client, the court said the evidences clearly indicate a case of diversion.

The judge, Adebukola Banjoko, found him guilty of diverting funds to the Peoples Democratic Party in the state among other groups.

Mrs Banjoko who was still reading the judgement at the time of this report found Mr Dariye guilty of counts 1, 2, 4, and 7.

The counts relate to the diversion of N80 million to the PDP, N100 million to a company, Marine flow and other sums through the All State Bank.

The same judge jailed Mr Nyame.

BACKGROUND
Mr Dariye, a serving senator, was first elected governor of the state in 1999 under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.

He was re-elected in 2003, but later impeached by the state’s house of assembly in November 2006.

Former Governor of Plateau state, Joshua Dariye.
Following judgements of the Appeal and Supreme Courts nullifying his impeachment however, Mr Dariye was ordered to complete his tenure in 2007.

The prosecution, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, arraigned the defendant on a 21-count for the alleged offence shortly after the expiration of his tenure in May 2007.

According to the anti-graft agency, Mr Dariye used his office to siphon money out of the country, through various accounts.

Mr Dariye fought a seemingly endless battle to prevent his trial, from the lower court to the Supreme Court.

Ahead of his arraignment in 2007, Mr Dariye challenged the competence of the charges against him, but failed at the trial court.

Subsequently the ex-governor approached the Court of Appeal where he also failed in his attempt to stop the trial.

Mr Dariye who had secured an order for the suspension of his trial at the lower court, also proceeded to the Supreme Court with his appeal. He was, however, made to continue the trial following an order of the apex court in 2015, after stalling the case for over seven years.

The former governor controversially employed the services of a former Attorney General of the federation, Kanu Agabi, who headed Nigeria’s justice ministry when the charge against the defendant was first brought.

He is currently a senator on the platform of Nigeria’s ruling party, APC, to which he decamped in 2016. He was elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.

The judge, Olasumbo Banjoko, slated Tuesday for judgement after entertaining the final address of counsel.

Foreign AffairsFormer South Korean President Park Geun-hye Sentenced To 24 Years Imprisonment by babs4all(op): 10:51am On Apr 06, 2018
It took South Korean Judiciary a year to prosecute an ex-president and got her convicted. In Naija, it would take like forever to prosecute an ordinary Councillor:

Park Geun-hye, a former President of South Korea, was on Friday sentenced to 24 years in prison after being found guilty of abuse of power and coercion.

In a verdict that was broadcast live, Ms Geun-hye was also fined 18 billion Korean won for her corrupt practices. The money is about 17 million in U.S. dollars.

The former president was not in court on Friday for the verdict. She was first arrested in March 2017 and had refused to attend trial since October, citing health crisis.

She maintained she did no wrong and accused authorities of victimising her for political reasons.

At the heart of her trial was allegations that she colluded with her close friend, Choi Soon-sil, to shakedown business executives in South Korea in return for political favours. The collaborator had been sentenced to prison since February last year.

The former president was brought down following weeks of protests across the country in March 2017. She was subsequently arrested and placed on trial.

Prosecutors got her convicted on 18 counts of bribery and coercion.

Her supporters are still taking to the streets in Seoul, the country’s capital, demanding her release, saying her trial was political.

You got married two weeks ago and you want to go for honeymoon. Canadian visa can take up to 4 months sometimes. I thought honeymoon ought to be immediately after marriage. Your intention may be misconstrued.

PoliticsBreaking:saraki Loses Again As Code Of Conduct Tribunal Refuses To Quash Charges by babs4all(op): 1:34pm On Mar 24, 2016
The Code of Conduct Tribunal has dismissed an application by the senate president, Bukola Saraki, for false asset declaration charges against him to be dropped.
Mr. Saraki’s lawyer, Kanu Agabi, had argued that the 13-count charge was invalid procedurally because the Code of Conduct Bureau which filed the charges, failed to allow Mr. Saraki explain discrepancies in his assets declaration forms as required by law.
But in his ruling Thursday, the chairman of the tribunal, Danladi Umar, said there was no breach of law as the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act, 1989, still allows the senate president raise his clarifications at the level of the tribunal.
Mr. Danladi said by law, the CCB could receive complaints of breach of the Act and refer such complaints to the Tribunal, provided that it will allow the person involved to give a statement affirming or denying the said misconduct.
Also, upholding the argument made by the prosecution, Mr. Umar said Section 3 (e) of the 3rd schedule of the 1999 Constitution gives the bureau the right to receive complaints of such nature and where necessary refer such matter to the tribunal.
According to Mr. Danladi, Section 174 of the Constitution also gives the Attorney General of the Federation the prerogative to file criminal proceedings and does not owe any explanations to any one on how to go about it.
He therefore ordered the continuation of the trial.

Mr. Saraki had earlier lost his bid to stop the trial after the the Supreme Court dismissed his initial objections.

PoliticsPDP Disowns Dokpesi, Says Apology To Nigerians His Personal Opinion by babs4all(op): 9:01am On Nov 12, 2015
The National Publicity Secretary of Peoples Democratic Party, Olisa Metuh, said the apology credited to the party’s National Conference Committee Chairman, Raymond Dokpesi, remained his personal opinion.
Mr. Metuh made this remark when he spoke with journalists in Abuja on Wednesday.
He said Mr. Dokpesi’s statement did not in any way represent the official position of the PDP, as he was not a member of the party’s National Executive Committee.
Mr. Metuh said Mr. Dokpesi could only speak in his personal capacity adding that his opinion remains personal and did not represent that of the party.
On PDP’s choice of former President Goodluck Jonathan as candidate in the 2015 presidential race, Mr. Metuh said the decision was approved by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).
He added that the decision was also approved by the party’s National Executive Council (NEC), and the party’s National Caucus.
“In addition, the Constitution of the party allows a sitting president the chance to exercise his personal right to run for a second term if he so desires.’’
On whether the party regretted its action, Metuh said, “how can you regret a decision taken when everyone was there, the NWC, NEC and the national caucus?
“What are we talking about? Everybody was conscious of the decision; nobody was coerced into supporting the position.”
He, however, said it was not the time for buck-passing or blame-game but time to collectively reposition the party.
“We are repositioning our party. What we should do is to join hands to reposition PDP based on Sen. Ike Ekweremadu’s report to reclaim the party’s lost glory. This is what is expected of us all at this time,’’ Mr. Metuh said.
Mr. Dokpesi had on Tuesday, on behalf of the PDP, apologised for mistakes the party made during its 16 years rule in the country.
Mr. Dokpesi admitted that the party might not have met all the expectations of Nigerians while it was in power, saying “on behalf of PDP, I tender our apologies.”
Mr. Dokpesi admitted that the party deviated from the dream of its founding fathers, adding that members operated without recourse to the rule of law.
He added that the party, in 2010 and 2011, made the first fundamental mistake for not allowing the North to complete its term.
He noted that special recommendations were made to allow former President Goodluck Jonathan to complete it.
