YourNemesis: No, sometimes movies can be a deliberate force for good, correcting the wrongs of society. They have a Yoruba movies board, they need to start screening movies with less than 80% Yoruba language content. So many language regulatory boards across the world do it, including French, German and even Hindi. I understand your point, but anyone really interested in promoting Yoruba or Ibo or Hausa culture or language, should make his own movie. If my focus as a businessman is to make money, i can even make a movie where they are speaking Yoruba and Spanish! Mind you many Yoruba movies have Ibo and Benin actors like Regina Chukwu and Mercy Aigbe. The freedom of capitalism should never be sacrificed on the altar of "lets promote our culture ". Thats a job for the Ogun State Ministry of Culture and Tourism or the Federal counterpart or maybe like you mentioned let the Yoruba Movies Board fund such a movie and pay actors well; not the "Egbon/Aunty please help me manage this 20k till we sell" mentality that pervades the Yoruba movie industry. |

YourNemesis: Is it only that?
How about their horrible code-mixing between 60% English and 40% Half baked Yoruba that they call Discussions in Yoruba?
They may think that it makes them sound "posh", but seriously, it is disgusting!
Why would I go the length of watching a movie in Yoruba only to hear them speaking English half the tie, when English nollywood or even America's hollywood is there for mea to watch and learn English Grammar? But 90 to 99% % of Yoruba people speak both languages at the same time in every day conversations? Aren't movies a reflection of real life? Expect a movie is based on an historical event like the movie Odua, that wont change anytime soon. |
TV/Movies › Re: Yoruba Movie Industry Is Getting It Wrong by babzo(m): 9:35pm On Jun 23, 2019 |
That was 2013 you put this up. Is it better now or worse? Dont really understand your point about the names? The primary motive of any film production house is profit, whether it be in Nigeria or the USA. Its the government ,educational and religious institutions etc that might have more altruistic motives. And these producers cater to the mentality of their audience, which is why 99% of Nigerian movies can not sell to a non African audience. Mainframe movies are one exemption and the old movies by Ogunde and the Benin guy that did movies like "Death of a Black President ". The average Nigeria believes in spiritual and diabolical things and believes they affect his daily life, thats why many movies focus on that. With the overwhelming prevalence of piracy, this wont change anytime soon. When somebody invests 5 million in a movie and knows it will be pirated within days, even before release; he wont really be bothered about taking the time to make corrections, research, and professionalism. |

PMB, please stop all these shenanigans and act like the C in C you promised to be. Governing this country and dealing with the acts of violence happening nation wide is not rocket science. Public prayers were canceled even in your own State of Katsina because of bandits. What is going on? Is there a plan to wipe out ALL Nigerians, Muslim and Christians, North and South? Male and Female? What is the NIA with all the billions they collect to gather intelligence? What about the SSS? Oga, act decisively now. |

Insulting a rape victim who in all ramifications is better than the best you and your worthless generations will ever be. I know it can be tough, but most of these kind of people get turned on by the attention they get from responses. They have serious psychological issues and mistakenly think they can reach highs by getting attention, they keep posting unbelievable trash on SM; not understanding the gravity of their situation. Ignore them as much as possible. They are bereft of any iota of sound reasoning or intellectual debate. |

9jaRealist: You mean like the almost 350 rotting and decomposed unburied bodies discovered at the Tri-State Crematory in Georgia a few years back?
The reality is that most poor folk in a place like the US and cremated and/or crammed into mass graves (in my original hometown of NYC, it’s out on the isolated island known as Potters’ Field). And of course a fair number of people donate their remains for medical research.
I think Africans often make too much of an emotional investment in so-called “ancestral land” (often forgetting that most humans only settled where they ended up after migrating from somewhere else), but that is frankly no different than the original owners of North America (the Native Americans) and several others do. Nonetheless, the emotional pull to return is family, extended family and community - not a piece of earth. Accordingly, as more people emigrate and congregate elsewhere, that pull will weaken but unlikely to ever completely go away. > Isnt a crematory a place to cremate (burn) bodies, a growing choice for many in the West? If the bodies were discovered there, it means a crime had been committed (at least misdemeanor for improperly disposing of human remains plus some sort of felony fraud). The discovery would definitely lead to charges, thats the way things work in any advanced/ decent society. While i am not aware of that incident, it probably is the basis for an episode of Law and Order that i watched. My experience in the USA is respect for both the living and the dead. Have visited many states here over many years, never once saw a dead body lying on the street or a dis organized burial ground. EVERY burial ground i have seen and there have been many, have all wowed me like is this really a burial ground? No where on Earth is perfect, but there is nothing like a society that purses order, decency and punishes crime. |

t2luv1: Roads in Nigeria are bad ok I admit. but when are the people going to start taking responsibility for some of the things that happen to the roads that the government has fixed. When you see an over weight Trailer on a road that wasn't built to handle the amount of load that trailer is hauling. In US those weigh stations on the interstate are there to make sure the weight limit on a particular highway are been observe Just like the USA example you gave; there is a government department here in Nigeria filled with people earning salaries and bonuses whose job it is to ensure such doesn't happen. Where are they? |

Okuda: the problem is not fixing the place, that place can get worse in less than 1yr real quick if the animals using and thpse in charge of these facilities dont do the right thing. Maintenance is key..i was suprised when i saw serious pot holes in the USA. Difference here is that they have a good maintenance culture and there is plan to fix such potholes almost immediately. |
