Odunhana: FUNAAB doesn't have anything to do with your state. If that principle applies, my 58% in PUME and 55.2 composite would have secured me a place in FUNAAB. And with some of my friends with 50's composite would have been admitted. Just forget about whatever state you hailed from. Your score with God on your side will judge.
I beg to differ bro. This is Nigeria, this is the kind of thing that defines us. Some call it equality, some call it favouritism. Your state does count, FUNAAB just doesn't announce it cos they don't release official cut off marks.

Johnpaul88: I hear Valdes sustained a calf injury in 35 mins stint he played in Spain's 1 nil lost to South Africa and that he could be out for between 3 - 6 weeks depending on the outcome of tests tomorrow!

That's really another big blow following Messi's injury & as it stands now, alot of Barca players are suffering from one injury to another. Xavi & Tello are already ruled out for our league game on Saturday against Granada for Muscle overburdening & ankle injury respectively. Alba & Pique are also expected to miss the match. That's really disturbing news here & there.

As for Valdes who have arguably been one of our best players this season, i really hope Pinto will be able to provide a good cover until perhaps january when Valdes may return to full action.

I wish him & our other injured players well.
Yeah! It's official.

As much as i'll love for that to happen, I still think the world cup is too soon for him. There are so many people on spain's waiting list. Let him focus on barca for now.

yourangel: I am not an expert in football analysis like most our Cule brothers on this thread. You could describe me as a layman or at best, a football enthusiast. That notwithstanding, I think Valdes is right. If you carefully analyse his words, you would notice that the premise has an underlying caveat; "For me, Barca will always depend on him because he is the best in the world". Barca will always be Messi-dependent as long as Messi continues to play at the top of his game. Once he slows down, that dependence would wane.

Alejandro Sabella, the national team coach of Argentina once opined that it would be impossible in this world for any team to have a player like Messi and not be dependent on him. I don't see any problems in the club being Messi-dependent. The problem is how to take that dependence out of the way if Messi is not playing or having a good game. There should be a plan B or C which would create an environment for other team members to step up their games when Messi is not playing at his best, or not playing at all.

Dependence on a talented individual in a team's setting is a natural phenomenon which occurs whenever you find a rare gem or genius around. Imagine having Albert Einstein on this thread and we are all working together to solve one very complex mathematical problem. Do you think Seun's eyes would be on me? No way! He would focus on Einstein, because he's the genius among the team members. Even we, the remaining members of the team would give him the freedom to take the centre stage, afterall, we are talking about Albert Einstein here. I tell you this bro, Messi is like the Albert Einstein of football. Who wouldn't depend on Einstein to solve his mathematical or classical physics problem for him? So, it's natural for any team to depend on Messi. Barca is not an exception to this.

Meanwhile, if Messi's injury woes persist and he no longer performs at his best, naturally Barca would gradually release him and remove their dependence because he would no longer be deemed reliable and dependable. But, as long as Messi continues to dazzle the world the way he currently does, any team on Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Mercury, etc, would naturally depend on him. This is what I think bro.
You got it man, you really got it. Most great teams naturally depend or at least have one stand out player.

The media just make it sound as if FC Barcelona will be doomed if Messi's not there. Though the team (any team that is) won't be the same without him, but before messi was ronaldinho, figo, rivaldo, ronaldo et al.

usbcable: and bros abeg is this professional from fifa.com:

But looking at Ronaldo’s profile on the Fifa’s official website, the Portuguese may indeed have a point.

“2013 proved to be another goal-drenched year for Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese star helped himself to 34 of them in the 2012/13 Liga season, a haul beaten only by Lionel Messi’s 45, and scored a hatful more in Europe and for his national team,” it said.

To analyse this, the profile has missed out the fact that Ronaldo has scored 62 goals for club and country in his “goal-drenched” year, currently 17 goals more than any other player (Lionel Messi has scored 45). The Barcelona forward, meanwhile, was described as an “attacking wizard” in his profile, while Franck Ribery was lauded for “mesmerising dribbles” in his.

Ronaldo’s “hatful” in Europe is 14 Champions League goals in 2013, five more than any other player as well.

yourangel: It's pathetic and utterly disappointing to read words like the bolded from a self-proclaimed football fan. I would enjoin all my cule brothers and sisters here to ignore you and your posts because it's obvious that you are a child who started watching football last season when Bayern won the CL. Otherwise, you won't write those words. Who is Ribery? His case for the Ballon d'Or is because Bayern won the treble last season. Not because he's a better player than CR7 and Messi. In the season that led to the mind blowing scoring record of 91 goals by Messi, he gave 28 assists. Who on earth does that? Only Messi does! Be it Maradona, Zidane or Ronaldinho, they never assisted and scored like Messi does year in and year out. This is the wonder of Messi, and the reason some football legends believe he's the greatest football player ever. He scores in volumes, and assist in volumes. Can your Ribery assist and score simultaneously like Messi does? No way! To reduce Messi to a mere goal poacher (as inferred in your words) is disgusting and malicious. You can make an honest case for Ribery. You don't have to resort to such lies and total distortion of the truth before you make your case clear. Ribery would wish to be like Messi or Ronaldo for just one day in his life time. Who knows Ribery if not for the treble of Bayern? Messi and Ronaldo don't have to win any treble before people know them. They are gods in the world of football. A testament to the fact that Ribery is crying that his own people in France prefer Messi and Ronaldo for the award.

Maradona said this sometime ago, "Messi is my Maradona". Last week, Hernan Crespo quipped that Maradona was his idol in football, but for him, "Messi is better than Maradona". Three days ago, our own Sergio Busquets was asked what he would want to be like if he reincarnates. His answer was "if I reincarnate, I would like to come as Leo Messi". Would any Bayern player wish to reincarnate as Ribery? God forbid bad thing! (lol). I believe if you are given the option to reincarnate between Ribery and Messi (only), you would undoubtedly go for the latter...lol. So, you see what I am talking about?

I won't be surprised if Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar appear as the top three candidates for the Ballon d'Or this year. Luckily for Ribery, it's the top five candidates (instead of the usual top three) that will be unveiled this time around. So, he stands the chance of being among the final five candidates. People only know about Ribery in Europe. Ballon d'Or is not awarded by Europeans only, but by the whole world. Neymar's achievements in the confederations cup are more spectacular to voters outside of Europe than Ribery's. That Ribery won the best player in Europe award is not a guarantee he would win the Ballon d'Or. Our darling Iniesta won the best player in Europe award last year, yet he came third (yes, third, not even second) in the Ballon d'Or.

Ribery is a fantastic player and I would be happy for him if he wins the award this time. However, he can never be in the league of Messi and Ronaldo. Never ever! Please tell Ribery to focus on qualifying his country for the world cup. Messi don qualify him country tay tay!
Brother, you sabi. I just wonder how someone, a football fanatic for that matter would write off players who scored and have been averaging 50 goals for the last 3 seasons simply because a particular player who didn't even score up to 20 goals won the treble with his team. If it's all about trophirazl then falcao merits it more cos he won the uefa super cup and the copa del rey with atleti and he doubled ribery's goals.

I mean, how can one even think that ribery is better than Messi/Ronaldo?

A-40: Football is hit or miss! Just like basketball! If Zidane did not headbutt Materazzi and France won the WC we all know Zizou woulda been voted World Best
Same way Baggio scoring for Italy and Italy
winning would have gifted him the Golden Ball
and WPOTY
One game can define and has defined legacies all the time
Yeah but not in a year that has a lot of competitions. Why're you comparing the world cup, a tournament you can win with just 7 matches with a whole season than has nothing less than 50 matches and 3 competitions.

Lampard and Gerrard are exceptional players as well! Xavi and Iniesta can never match their goalscoring exploits but no one in their right minds would compare them to the former pair I listed above.
When Zidane was winning his titles there were
goal machines like Makaay,Van
Nistelrooy,Jardel,Shevchenko
yet they never sniffed the awards! The sheer volume counts for shyte if they are not winning titles with it. In a sane and rational environment Zidane should win titles if he leads his teams to titles while Ronaldo or Messi scores 50+ goals including 15 penalties
Like I said, comparing lampard/gerrard with Xavi/iniesta won't be odd, people won't bite your head off if you do that, the latter aren't known for their goalscoring as much as for their assist rate, and the former, as I earlier said won't be overlooked especially when they score a lot of goals, that's one of the reasons why lampard came 2nd in the 2006 ballon d'or.

For the bolded, the players you mentioned are prolific YES but they don't disgrace goals like the duo of Messi and Ronaldo, and who said their goals (messi and ronaldo) don't produce trophies? If zidane played in this era, dominates as he always does and ends the season with the amount of goals he always does, and there's Messi/Ronaldo who score 50+ goals @ barca/madrid respectively with trophies, zidane won't sniff the ballon d'or, he'll come 3rd at best.
What was the use of the 50+ goals if titles were not won in the end? Ronaldo won none and Messi won one both were nowhere to be found when it mattered most while Ribery shone like a million stars!
Neither Ronaldo nor Messi would score those astronomical number of goals at Bayern because Bayern is multi-dimensional! last season 8 players scored at least 8 goals that simply means they would take fewer shots and invariably their goal tally reduces

Carmelo might average more points than Chris Paul doesn't mean he played better

So we can say Gerrard and Lampard are better than Xavi and Iniesta by far! Since they score more goals
Its a pity we are in an era where goals are the only thing that counts! Neither Ronaldo or Messi have influenced a game like a Zidane or Ronaldinho in their prime. Maradona did not score 1million goals a season but we saw his contribution. I'm not moved by hattricks against Celta Vigo,Rayo Vallecano and Spartak Moscow. My question is where was Messi and Ronaldo against Bayern and Dortmund?
So your criteria for judging both Messi and Ronaldo's season now lie in a match, just one: the UCL semi finals. I mean, of all the 50+ matches they played, you're judging by just that one? Hmmmn…and you say they don't influence matches much, really? It's like the first time I'm hearing that.

@ bolded, Mario Gomez scored 40+ goals last 2 seasons and got Bayern to the UCL which they unluckily lost to Chelsea, so don't say a Bayern player can't score that much.

And if you wanna have an argument about Lampard/Gerrard being better than Xavi/Iniesta, it won't sound far-fetched cos they're exceptional players, and was there ever an era where goals weren't very important? Imagine zidane playing in this era and influencing games by his 'dominatory skills' while Ronaldo scores 50+ goals, you think zidane will win the ballon d'or? Think twice.

Lol!

All i know is that Ribery should allow his work to speak for him. Messi never talks about Ballon d' oro and now he's 4! Penaldo & his cohorts have all been drumming support for him all these years, using all means possible including relinquishing his position as national team captain in order to get some extra votes & blackmailing FIFA . But after all said & done, he won nothing!

Ribery's tactics may have worked for him in Monaco, since all the few select journalists are always encouraged to vote the winners of the just concluded European competition, be it Ucl or Euro, for European best award. It's pretty easy!

But when you talk about dealing with over 600 voters for the Ballon d'oro, it's a different ball game! He needs more than mere ranting to win.
MD is even reporting that Neymar is making a serious inroad in the scheme of things in the votes & may yet spring up alotta surprises. Afterall he starred in the confederations Cup & he plays for the highly favoured FC Barcelona!
Bayern fans are not ashamed of him! We know this Balon D'Or thing is really a popularity contest the more reason he has to keep throwing his name out there. It was the same thing that was done for the European awards and it worked wonders! Ribery had 39 votes out of 56
He should fold his arms and get cheated of an award he rightfully deserves? I think not! The sheer number of players from Bayern clearly show everyone is aware of the team's accomplishments. Let Ribery campaign as he sees fit! He's earned it

He created more goals than all those players you listed above including Messi that has to count for something
Last season all Bayern fans know that along with Schweini and Lahm Franck Ribery na our brainbox without him we always seemed to struggle! So far this season he has also been a beast. It is not Ribery's fault that he plays in a very balanced team were the goalscoring load is evenly distributed!

Already this season at Bayern
Mandzukic: 10 goals
Muller: 10 goals
Ribery: 9 goals 7 assists

Ribery's game does not revolve around goals so judging him solely by goals is missing the point check out his dribbles, creativity, his ability to influence the game! The distance he covers (go and check it aya e a ja) and how hard he works for his team

Scoring 50 goals does not make you the best player in the world especially when you realize most of those goals are against hapless teams that have given up the fight! 1 more goal from Ronaldo against Dortmund would have been more important than 5 against Rayo Vallecano last season! You can't be the best when you didn't show up when it mattered most. Zidane and Ronaldinho won WPOTY and didn't score half as many goals as Henry! Zidane barely won the league and Ronaldinho did not even win a spoon so what are we talking about here?
We get it. He's good but I can't believe you can just write off players who score 50+ goals simply because most of them were scored against small teams. Ribery also played against small teams you know? He knows his lack of goals might count against him that's why he accusing people in France of inferiority complex, and if zidane and ronaldinho had played in this era, they wouldn't win the ballon d'or. Goals count bro, they do.

NB: He should focus of getting his country to the world cup and indirectly begging for votes. That's what champions do.

yourangel: Ribery: I deserve to win Ballon d'Or

The winger shone as Bayern Munich won the treble in May and begun this season in blistering form, and believes his game is now a match for the world's best

Bayern Munich attacker Franck Ribery says he deserves to win this year's Ballon d'Or over fellow front-runners Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Frenchman has shone in 2013 as the Bavarians completed an historic treble and have started the current campaign under new coach Pep Guardiola in blistering form.

Ribery knows he will have a tough time topping Barcelona's Messi and Real Madrid's Ronaldo, but he is confident that his improvements over the past 12 months should earn him the accolade.

"I try not to think about the Ballon d'Or," the 30-year-old told L'Equipe. "But my wife has already prepared the space above the fireplace in the living room.

"I do get a lot of belief from her and all of Bayern. I do not know if I will win, however I think I deserve it.

"Before I was a good player, now I think I'm the best."

Ribery is expected to feature in France's World Cup play-off qualifiers with Ukraine this week, starting with the away leg on Friday.

Exactly! If he really deserves it, he doesn't have to go on whining about it. People's votes are actually gonna win it for him. Messi has never for once come out in public to talk about his achievement so as to win any award.
No its not about being tired! Its about staking his claim and he has every right to do so because he has earned it. He ought not to be punished just because he plays for a team that is a team in the real sense of the word
Someone talked about scoring 20 goals as if that's a valid criteria! All the years Zidane and Ronaldinho won WPOTY awards how many goals did they score? You mean to tell me there were not others that scored more goals? Ribery based on last season's exploits is better than Messi and Ronaldo! The award is a yearly one last time I checked
As I said, no qualms is Ribery wins it but I say again, because his team won everything last season doesn't make him better than Messi and Ronaldo. Robben, Suarez, Falcao and Ibrahimovic are more deserving of it than Ribery in my opinion. Bayern were the WOW team, not Ribery the WOW player.

As for the bolded, when zidane and ronaldinho were winning the awards, players don't score 50+ goals per season then, and as much as you might wanna take all round play into consideration, goals also count. At least Messi also won the exact same thing Ribery's is winning now in 2009 and we all know how many goals he scored.
