Foreign AffairsRe: Sarah Palin: Obama Wrong On Israeli, Afghan Policy by bawomolo(m): 2:21am On Nov 25, 2009
JeSoul:
Palin is right. Obama should not be taking this long to make a decision on Afghanistan - it's either you increase the troops or bring them home, and I'm in full support of bringing them home. The amount of dead US soldiers keeps piling up every day.
and don't forget Palin has a son who is right now in the middle east, I think that lends her some grounds to speak to the issue.

As for Isreal, I think we the rest of the world should just butt out and let they and the opposition wrestle it out. They've been fighting since biblical times, they'll still be fighting 1000yrs from now.
it would be pretty selfish for the US to withdraw now after dragging NATO into the war.

Of all the atheists on this forum, you have consistently been the most silly.

You see acts of human brutality: acts of man's inhumanity to man, and you begin to bleat about God?

What has God to do with the monstrosities of intelligent beings who are accorded free will?

When will you learn that we have free will exactly so that we can learn and develop over time through our mistakes?

Gosh, you do not inspire thought at all.
i have a question deep sight. were does your concept of free-will come from? christianity?

Most likely someone that is DOMICILED in the state and/or pays a state tax.   Not all indigenous lagosians are yoruba, there are egun people and many others.

Don't pull a fast one Bawo . . . atheism by definition eliminates that possiblity.
i do accept the possibility of a God, hey santa claus can exist but the possibility of man explaining the nature of this God is zilch.   Why talk about it if we can't define it or sense it?

What is dark energy in the universe. If you can give a concrete explanation for it, i will accept that there is no God.
but why did you arrive at the single number of ONE god? why not a multitude of creator Gods? my atheist stance is that God is not worth talking about.

It doesn't have to be like 'state and federal universities'. The Catholic and Methodist schools were a cut above most other schools in Nigeria in those days. And they certainly didn't charge an arm and a leg for school fees.
the funny thing is most of these new age christian leaders went to mission schools. You'd think they follow the subsidized models of those schools

I am a living proof of the result of Bishop David Oyedepo's obedience to the calling of God in his life. I have consistently stood out among my mates just by following him. My marriage is like heaven on earth filled with spiritual and material blessings just by following him

I can think of at least one boundary that your reasoning has: the boundary of the possibility of the existence of a Deity.
the possibility isn't eliminated, it just seems highly unlikely considering the inability of man to determine the nature of this deity.

JeSoul:
Didn't shift at for a even a micrometer, just merely pointed out 2 different gaping flaws in the "my theological box is bigger than yours" position. I know there is power and that it is of life-changing quality because I have experienced it personally and have never been the same since. But please, my experience is not truth for everyone else, they'll live out their own walks and decide for themselves what to believe or disbelieve.
is a deity needed to experience a life-changing moment? i don't think so.

Christianity EtcRe: Whose Ideological Box Is Bigger? by bawomolo(m): 7:24pm On Nov 23, 2009
JeSoul:
That your "ideological box" may be bigger is of little to no consequence. It's about quality not quantity.
I won't consider a religion that can't agree on the contents of it's holy text to be that qualitative (there are different versions of the bible right?). The enormous amounts of Christian sects tells me quantity isn't a problem for them either.

You may have more "headspace" and "wiggleroom" to fit in a smorgasbord of assorted beliefs or lack thereof, but what is it worth if they be of empty of soulful conviction, puffed up but impotent, characterized by an absence of true life-changing power?
You have jumped from one goal post to another. How do you know this power you believe in is life changing? Isn't it possible to have a non-interventionist God? there is no assorted belief, just a disbelief in God and you are on your own.
Christianity EtcRe: Bawomolo & Manmustwac by bawomolo(m): 7:16pm On Nov 23, 2009
So you say.

Your argument is null, void and trash. I found this on Wikipedia about Orthodox Buddhism (Theravada):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theravada
there is no almighty God in the buddhist religion.

1. There is no almighty God in Buddhism. There is no one to hand out rewards or punishments on a supposedly Judgement Day.

2. Buddhism is strictly not a religion in the context of being a faith and worship owing allegiance to a supernatural being.

3. No saviour concept in Buddhism. A Buddha is not a saviour who saves others by his personal salvation. Although a Buddhist seeks refuge in the Buddha as his incomparable guide who indicates the path of purity, he makes no servile surrender. A Buddhist does not think that he can gain purity merely by seeking refuge in the Buddha or by mere faith in Him. It is not within the power of a Buddha to wash away the impurities of others

4. A Buddha is not an incarnation of a god/God (as claimed by some Hindu followers). The relationship between a Buddha and his disciples and followers is that of a teacher and student.

http://www.buddhanet.net/e-learning/snapshot01.htm

The buddha never spoke about the existence of Gods.

from your link

Theravada (Pāli: थेरवाद theravāda (cf Sanskrit: स्थविरवाद sthaviravāda); literally, "the Teaching of the Elders" or "the Ancient Teaching", is the oldest surviving Buddhist school.

oldest surviving school of thought and not the OLDEST SCHOOL OF THOUGHT from buddha itself. You might want to read your sources before posting them.

Undecided duh we say "God" because human expression is so poor, we NEED words to express our notions. Maybe you can fast forward into the age when man will have HIVE-MINDS and we wont need to use nouns or even words to express ourselves. O, I forgot, if that was the case, we won't have nairaland and we won't be having this conversation because everyone will know what everyone else knows.
but what makes a "God". The term "God" is poor is poorly defined and bounded. Why not let the first cause be the first cause? why call it God?

Why masculine? In my hurry (was very busy at the time but I wanted to respond) to express my general view on divinity, I must have forgotten to make it politically correct. If you notice, I always use he/she/it whenever I speak about divinity in general. If I had used HER or IT, I would also hear hot-hell and burning sulphur from some other people on the thread,
no you won't, you know damn well masculine characteristics are typically assigned to the Christian God. abi?

how many female portraits of the Christian God are printed? God the FATHER right? It's your job to show to me how this alpha and omega was discovered to be a male.

. In fact, I believe that man comes next on the descending scales of power, RIGHT AFTER the most supreme Deity.
interesting, what about the "minor" deities like ifa, sango, zeus, horus and co. Are they not above us? (considering we harness their powers). Are we above angels and spirits?

Of course He did! You have simply taken my quote out of perspective
so what separates Christianity from other religions that have judgmental gods and saviors? there are examples of reincarnation in other religions too.

In perspective, the OT God of the Jews really did all of that, but it is very clear that the same one who did that also created an alternative route! And that was what we were talking about.
Is the Christian God the only God capable of creating alternative routes?

Christianity EtcRe: Whose Ideological Box Is Bigger? by bawomolo(m): 4:31pm On Nov 23, 2009
I would say atheism considering how broad the philosophy can be. Atheists can be anything from buddhist to humanists to communists or evolutionists. Atheism provides more wiggle room and less dogma.
Christianity EtcRe: Bawomolo & Manmustwac by bawomolo(m): 4:28pm On Nov 23, 2009
In the light of my definition above, humans who believe in a religion or the other carry out relevant activities to ensure that they are in the right standing with that deity (or those deities)
not all religions have a deity. Orthodox buddhism is an example of one without a deity. There is no deity in Scientology either.

God does not need to be named as "God" by men in order to have "meaning" to us, or in order to carry out His intents and purposes.
then why call it God? i have another question though, how do you know God is a MALE? . funny how a male dominated society tends to define "God" as masculine.

@Jagunlabi: Trash and jabberwocky. None of those religions involved the death of the God/gods in order to save the puny insignificant man. Rather, they stand aloof and administer wrath or blessings due to the man's actions. You lie.
What makes man puny and insignificant? I would say a creature that can achieve things such as landing on the moon isn't so insignificant.

As for the bolded, didn't the Christian God do this alot in the Old testament?

Secretary please come here right now in the name of Jeeeesus ! Mine eyes have seen the promised land, in all its glory, and that VISION has triggered a most ungodly disturbance beneath my holy robes, as the sinful serpent therein struggles against my better judgement to escape and plunge itself between these silky thighs that stand here so provocatively before me in the house of God.

Please secretary, these glistening, heaving, pointy bosoms must be conquered, I mean covered at once, before I fall into the laps, I mean the ways of the flesh, where so many lesser men of god expect to find paradise, and thereby bust a nut , um lose their way.

Actually, on second thoughts, please leave me alone with this wayward damsel for the next few hours, so that I can perform the laying on of hands on her luscious, I mean sinful tits, I mean soul, and thereby do my utmost to bring myself into her fold, I mean to, oh well, you know what I mean.

why call this cause a God.   Here come my argument about whether the universe needs a "God" to exist.  If so, can there be many Gods around?

Thus you assert that the universe does not need a cause  to exist. . . ? Please confirm.
i won't assert that but it's plausible.   If the universe does need a cause, is that cause God?

And what do you suppose it would take to "observe" God, if he did exist?
probably God presenting itself to us or experiencing it from within (or is that being possessed by a demon?)

Islam to Xtian was quite tough cos I suddenly  became a defender of that that I had been taught to abhor. I recall many sleepless nights and was almost going mad. I left Islam in my quest to be a better muslim, the more I learned, the less appealing the faith became. At first Xtianity appeared to be next obvious choice until jehovah proved to just as bigoted and monstrous as allah
I see, that makes sense.   Most religions thrive on followers remaining ignorant while their leader dictate to them.
