From all indication, Prof. Jega and his resident commissioners were ready to go ahead with the February presidential election as scheduled and that explained why it took him several meetings and consultations with different interest groups to arrive at the painful decision.

But the major issue that got his hands tied is that of Security.

Beyond the Military's claim that it could not guarantee the safety of the Inec staff, materials and voters.

Since PDP has been crying for the postponement for their selfish reasons, they have succeeded innusing threat that Prof. Jega will be held responsible for whatever (problem) that may arise after their sudden refusal to provide security as it has always been the case.

The Director General of NYSC where INEC recruits the 80% of its ad hoc staff, who incidentally is a military man under chief of army staff can not say otherwise when his "Oga at the top" are interested in postponig the election.

At this point, INEC can do nothing without the NYSC and the security agencies both of which are under the command and influence of the Presidency.


In addition,

Jonathan’s supporters under the aegis of the Southern Nigeria Peoples Assembly led by Ijaw leader and ex-Minister of Information, Chief Edwin Clark, called for the postponement of the polls.

The group, at a press conference, pressed further by asking for the sacking Chairman, INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega, and his arrest for allegedly conniving with some northerners to manipulate the presidential election against Jonathan.

Those in attendance included a former Vice-President, Alex Ekwueme, ex-Minister of Information, Walter Ofonagoro; ex-Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife; Peoples Democratic Party’s National Vice-Chairman (South-South), Dr. Cairo Ojugboh, and the Chairman, Presidential Advisory Committee of the recently held national confab, Senator Femi Okurounmu, among others.

Okurounmu, who read a prepared speech jointly signed by him, Clark and Ekwueme on behalf of the group, said the alleged connivance with the Northern Elders Forum was responsible for the near 100 per cent collection of Permanent Voter Cards in the North.

The PDP has also repeatedly called for a shift of the polls in the past two weeks.

An INEC National Commissioner, who spoke to SUNDAY PUNCH under anonymity after the Saturday meetings, said it was better for the commission to shift the elections in order to protect the integrity of their outcome and those that would take part in the conduct of the elections.

He said, “You needed to be at the meeting and see the mood of Jega. He was not happy because his integrity was at stake and because these same service chiefs had earlier given their words that they were ready.

“Now, if he didn’t listen to their advice, these same security agencies could create scenes (problems) for the elections. They could sabotage the distribution of sensitive materials.

“Apart from that, they could also refuse to provide security for those involved in the elections and could also sabotage the movement of sensitive materials.”

The source said almost everyone in the country was aware that the PDP-led Federal Government was not ready for the elections.

“If the Federal Government that is funding the security agencies and appointed their heads is not ready for elections, how do you compel their heads who are all appointees of the same government to say they are ready,” according to punch newspaper

The current cheif of Army staff is an Ijaw man appointed by GEJ over and above about 15 senior officers from other parts of the country. The current director general of DSS and marly Ogar were more interested in going after " perceived enemy" of GEJ than to gather serious intelligence about enemy of nigeria.

All government institutions and parastatals are in a race to impress and do the biddings of the party in power even if such biddings are inimical to the nigeria's existence.

There are so many people who really don't mean well for GEJ but they prefer GEJ cleulessness leadership that has allowed them to hold sway in corrupt practices than imagine what life will be like for them under Buhari's leadership.

It is up to us to decide the future of this country but I am convinced that we trully deserve better than this . Nigerians have no business queuing at embassies for visas if we trully have bood leaders who can manage this country.

I for one, will not mind Jimi Agbaje -the PDP gubernatorial aspirant in lagos state to become the next governor of lagos state, so the APC at the state level can taste the humble pie.

If 90% of APC members are former PDP members, so what?

We all know that leadership is key in every organisation, if the head is rotten, the rest of the body cannot function effectively.

Your idea of guilty by association is not logical to discerning people. If my MD run our company aground, does it mean I am responsible? Let's take intercontinental bank or Oceanic bank for example, the fact that Cecilia Ibru and Erastus Akingbola ran the two banks aground means that everyone who have work in those organisations are bad?

By the way Buhari & Osinbajo who are our major interst here has never associated with PDP.

Secondly, this idea that Buhari is 72yrs is cock and bull story. Of what use has Dimeji Bankole, Femi Fani Kayode, Ifeanyi Uba, Farouk Lawan etc who are younger have demonstrated enough integrity in their public and private lives.

Please, show us the youths in our midst who can do a better job and will not be intimidated by these corrupt politicians. I don't care about how old my president is and how many masters and phd degrees he has, all I want is competent, capable, discipline and incorruptible president who can deal decisively with national problems.

Lastly, a neighbour of mine who is a muslim voted for GEJ in 2011 and he says apart from the woeful performance of GEJ, his supportets are also helping the opposition to garner block votes from muslims like him with thrir utterances about buhari and islam.

GEJ supporters should realise that Christians populations only will not be sufficient to re-elect GEJ and those muslims who have sympathy for him will be swayed to Buhari on the account that of his character being assassinated due to his religion. I.e. Buhari will islamise nigeria! In 21st century?

I know in the absence of genuine counter-argument, some PDP sympathizers will insult me but I tried to be as objective as I can,

I am not a politician, I hate Tinubu with a passion, infact, I will like Lagos to be taken over by Jimi Agbaje but GEJ has failed my generation who thought his ascendancy as a minority will give hope to nigerians and break all barriers to set a good precedent that any nigerian can attain the highest position in nigeria, but we were wrong after all.

It is apparently clear that most contributors here are either not well informed on international politics or they are inadvertently being guided by their religious sentiments towards Israel.

Though, a good analysis of some comments also show some signs of under-aged members making shallow attempt to respond to the thread.

May I ask:

Who is benefiting from the present precarious state in which Palestine is?

Why are the palestinians treated like sub-humans?

Can there ever be peace wherever injustice reign?

Is given Palestinians a rightful state of their own too much to attain peace in the most turbulent region of the world?

I watched the UN proceedings yesterday, and I can't but wonder how Israel and her Allies can win peace with force which has failed since 1948

The world's opinions is fast changing towards palestine. No man can survive and be happy to be in bondage.

All those who believe in equity, fairplay and Justice will surely not be happy with the outcome because it implies more violence and bloodshed for that region in the years to come.

I am not interested in which country vote for or against but my problem is with some segment of the jewish nation (not all) and their collaborators in US who think using Nazi or Adolf hitler formulae to exterminate the palestinians will guarantee them peace.

Our own actions and inactions in our home, community, state, country, continent and in the world at large determines what becomes of the world we leave. Inactions can and in most times is more dangerous and disastrous than actions, each depends on its circumstance.

For me, I want a peacefil world and I urge people to use more of their head than hearts because heart has been found to be most irrational and unreasonable in decision making, the head is better gifted to judge and reason better.
