A new Nigeria is dawning; evil old bats like Ciroma are being swept away and buried with the debris of the old. They will claw, scratch and put up a squalid fight, but their days as vampires lofted high on the twin wings of corruption and tribalism have come to an abrupt end. |
Confusion hits North over Jonathan • We’ll scuttle his ambition -Ciroma •IBB, Saraki should withdraw from race -N/Central leaders •I’m out to make history, says Jonathan Written by Taiwo Adisa, Ayodele Adesanmi, Idowu Samuel, and Yekini Jimoh, with Agency Reports Thursday, 21 October 2010 THE falcon no longer hears the falconer among the Northern politicians, as there appears to be confusion in the region over the ambition of President Goodluck Jonathan, due to the discordant tunes coming from the zone. Stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the North-Central zone have told former military ruler, General Ibrahim Babangida and governor of Kwara State, Dr Bukola Saraki, to perish their ambitions, pledging their support for President Jonathan. However, former Minister of Finance and leader of the Northern Political Leaders Forum (NPLF), Alhaji Adamu Ciroma, in an interview on the Hausa service of the Voice of America (VOA), on Wednesday, maintained that the North would use every legal and democratic means to scuttle Jonathan’s aspiration. Ciroma said Jonathan’s ambition was dishonourable, because he was pursuing it at the expense of the North, which was entitled to eight years under the zoning agreement for power sharing between the North and the South. He particularly accused former President Olusegun Obasanjo of being mainly responsible for the current political polarisation in the country caused by President Jonathan’s insistence to run at the instigation of Obasanjo. He said it was unfair to deny the North the right to complete its own turn of eight years after the South did its own under Obasanjo. The former finance minister described Obasanjo as an ingrate by pushing Jonathan to run, despite the obvious consequences of creating political bitterness and division, which the abandonment of zoning could produce. According to Ciroma, he personally met Obasanjo to protest against his role in urging Jonathan to run and reminded him that the peace and unity he fought for the Nigerian civil war were now threatened by crisis caused by the decision to unilaterally abandon zoning. He, however, admitted that since Obasanjo didn’t want to see reason, the North was not leaving things to chances. He said even if President Jonathan manipulated the party primaries and eventually emerged as the PDP presidential candidate, the North would deploy other options, including a consensus candidate, to command popular support. Ciroma warned that Jonathan could face a mass protest votes from the electorate, who might feel short-changed by the current scheme to abandon zoning. According to the leader of the NPLF, the electorate will ultimately decide between a candidate of honour and one that elevates and pursues dishonour. Meanwhile, leaders of the PDP in the North-Central states have resolved to persuade former military ruler, General Ibrahim Babangida, and the governor of Kwara State, Dr Bukola Saraki, to withdraw from the 2011 presidential race in favour of President Jonathan. The resolution is one of the decisions of the stakeholders’ meeting of the North-Central held at the residence of Senate president, Mr David Mark, on Wednesday. It was learnt that the meeting resolved to back President Jonathan while a contact committee was being constituted to reach out to the duo of Saraki and Babangida to ask them to withdraw from the race. Leaders of the North-Central, including governors Gabriel Suswam of Benue State; Jonah Jang of Plateau State; Alhaji Ibrahim Idris of Kogi State and Alhaji Aliyu Akwe Doma of Nasarawa State, as well as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Senator Bala Mohammed, and a former President of the Senate, Senator Ameh Ebute, had met at the Apo mansion, residence of the Senate President to appraise the political situation in the zone, as it affected the chances of President Jonathan. It was learnt that the majority of opinions at the meeting indicated that the zone should back the president for the ticket of the PDP and also ask those contesting the seat with him from the zone to withdraw. Others at the meeting included the Deputy Leader of the House of Representatives, Honourable Baba Shehu Agaire, two former national chairmen of the PDP, Chief Barnabas Gemade and Senator Ahmadu Ali; Senator Tunde Ogbeha, Minister of Sports, Honourable Isa Bio; Minister of State for Information and Communications, Mr Labaran Maku; Minister of State for Niger Delta Ministry, Mr Sam Ode, Minister of State for Interior, Mr Humphrey Abba, and the Director, Research, Planning and Strategy of the Goodluck Jonathan/Sambo Organisation, Chief Mike Omeri. Stakeholders from the six states of the zone were also invited to the meeting. Host of the meeting, Senator Mark, was quoted as saying that the resolution at the meeting was completely in favour of President Jonathan, adding that “a majority people of our zone have resolved to support Goodluck/Sambo ticket as best option for Nigeria.” Zonal Coordinator of the Jonathan/Sambo 2011 Campaign, Governor Suswam, was also quoted as saying that the North-Central zone was already looking beyond the PDP primaries. He said that the PDP had a “president who is doing very well and we have resolved in the North-Central to support Jonathan/Sambo ticket.” The Benue State governor also said at the end of the meeting that the zone had overlooked the presidential ambition of the like of General Babangida and Governor Saraki, having endorsed Jonathan for the job. A source further quoted the governor as saying that “we have endorsed Jonathan and we are strategising for him to win the general election convincingly.” Kogi State governor, Alhaji Idris, also endorsed Jonathan at the meeting as he told the gathering that he had made it clear that the state and the zone would back Jonathan. Former chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Ahmadu Ali, said that the meeting was an affirmation that the North-Central zone was solidly behind Jonathan/Sambo ticket for 2011. His predecessor in office, Chief Gemade, also stated the support of the zone for Jonathan. Minister of State, Information and Communications, Mr Maku, was also quoted as telling the closed door meeting that the galaxy of political heavyweights gathered at the meeting further confirmed that the people were in a search for credible leaders and not necessarily pursuing sentiments. “We have gone beyond this zoning or regional thing. The election of Goodluck Jonathan in 2011 is going to go beyond this and the election is going to turn a new page. After this period, Nigerians should be bold enough to unite this Country for good,” he said. The Director of Research, Planning and Strategy in the Goodluck Jonathan/Sambo 2011 Organisation, Mr Omeri, said in an interview that the endorsements by the North Central leaders had given the Jonathan/Sambo project a deserved boost. In another development, President Jonathan has said that the reason he is contesting the presidential election is because in the history of Nigeria, no person from the Niger Delta region has ever been the president of Nigeria. According to him, the Niger Delta region had consistently remained a stabilising factor in the political history of Nigeria and that this was the right time to allow the region too to have the taste of the nation’s presidency. He assured them that, if their candidate, Dr Saraki won at the primaries of the party, the campaign organisation would give their total support to him to move the party and the Nigeria forward. “We are all PDP members, and we will need ourselves one way or the other after the primaries , we are thinking of Nigeria, we are not thinking whether we are from the north or south, we are thinking of a Nigeria where peace and justice will reign supreme,” he noted. He called on the people of the state to support the move for what he called the new political order that would move the nation forward. Meanwhile, the presidency has indicated that it has long been probing the allegation of threat to the life of Chief Dokpesi, contrary to general impression. This is coming as President Goodluck Jonathan said he bore no grudge against Dokpesi or any member of his family and all his business interests. The presidency, in a letter dated October 12, 2010 forwarded to Dokpesi and made available to the Nigerian Tribune, said President Jonathan never hesitated in directing probe into the allegation of threats to his life and business interest. http://www.tribune.com.ng/index.php/front-page-news/12437-confusion-hits-north-over-jonathan-well-scuttle-his-ambition-ciroma-ibb-saraki-should-withdraw-from-race-ncentral-leaders-im-out-to-make-history-says-jonathan |
Court quashes land case against el-Rufai News Oct 20, 2010 By Ise-Oluwa Ige ABUJA—A Federal High Court, sitting in Abuja, yesterday, quashed a multiple counts of official corruption charge preferred by the Federal Government against Mallam Nasir el-Rufai and two key officials of the Abuja Geographic Information System, AGIS. The High Court Judge, Justice Adamu Bello, who discharged the accused persons held that he had no jurisdiction to sit on the case. The affected officials of the AGIS were its Director-General and General Manager, Altine Jubrin and Ismaila Iro, respectively. Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, prosecuting the trio on behalf of the Federal Government had accused them of conspiring with one another to use their high offices and positions to confer corrupt or unfair advantage upon themselves on one hand and on the relations and associates of el-Rufai on the other hand. Specifically, el-Rufai was accused of wilfully distorting the Abuja Master Plan by irregularly revoking the title of ownership of two parcels of land belonging to Power Holding Company of Nigeria Plc, PHCN, and the Nigeria Postal Services, NIPOST, and reallocated part of the land to the two officials of AGIS, another to his relations and associates. The said parcels of land which provoked the criminal charge were located in the high brow areas of Asokoro and Maitama. But Mallam Nasir El_Rufai who was all smiles yesterday moments after the charge against him collapsed said that the position of the court had vindicated his claim that the late President Yar’Adua’s administration found nothing against him but, out of wickedness, was brought to court for persecution. Although rufai and the two others were not acquitted yesterday since the matter was not decided on its merit, the former minister dressed in a velvet buba and sokoto with a palm sandal to match, told newsmen “with today’s ruling, the sorry edifice of persecution the Yar’Adua government erected to destroy me is beginning to collapse.” Indeed, the high court had quashed all the charge against the accused persons yesterday on the ground that the charge had no legal basis to stand, having been filed under a repealed law, the ICPC Act 2000. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2010/10/court-quashes-land-case-against-el-rufai/ |
mikeansy:I have never heard any emphatic statement that begins with "I am not aware." Rather, Ogar gave a statement that had no meaning and it is instructive that only two agencies considered the misinterpreted version of her words newsworthy and only one took the extreme misinterpretation to press. |
truly:Please take careful note of the highlighted items and then provide your several proofs to your statement below. If you do that, I will indeed apologise, but if you can't, would you be man enough to apologise to me? truly: I always advise that we do not call people namesLike I preached earlier, its best to keep away from low blows, whether to candidates or fellow NLers, we need to rise above petty politics for the sake of ourselves, GEJ, Ribadu and Nigeria. |
Ogar, at the news conference in Abuja, also said the detention of the Chairman of DAAR Communications and Director- General of IBB Campaign Organisation, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, was not in connection with the blasts. If anyone takes this to mean Dokpesi is off the hook, I weep for their understanding of simple sentences. She has simply stated that she is not aware of Dokpesi's reason for being at the SSS head office, and since she did not profer a reason, commonsense says that she did not wish to speak to the press about it. |
Mediocrity is not having the faculties to comprehend simple sentences. I am still waiting for anyone to salvage themselves and provide a quote that can be interpreted to mean the SSS exonorated Dokpesi. Thats got to be the simplest challenge. |
https://cdn.wn.com/pd/c3/3b/2f2d1522dcf80a8de9248c5effef_grande.jpg Lest we forget. . . Some of these men might have been involved in the Odi, Gbaramatu, Tombia and other massacres in the Niger Delta; some of these men might have been involved in the various massacres in the Middle Belt, especially Jos. Some of these men have rap'ed both the young and the old, invalids and the bedridden. Some of these men have kept inequalities stacked up against your people and your land forgotten and neglected. Have you witnessed the ravages of erosion in places like Nsukka or the hinterlands of Imo? Some in that uniform are demons. |
mikeansy:The fact is, in the present matter, nobody can point out a single sentence where the SSS let Dokpesi off the hook. The story is a forgery for willing ears. If such a sentence occurs anywhere, would you be so kind as to point it out? |
Onlytruth:My prayer and thinking as well, the one coincidence that sticks out to me is that Jonathan announced the National Conference thing on the very same day that all Middle Belt states adviced Babangida and Saraki to withdraw, cos they have decided to throw their hats in the ring for Jonathan. Also, the announcement came on the very Niger states PDP chapter endorsed Jonathan. It isn't impossible that there has been some very heavy politics and GEJ's words are a stop-gap. |
^ My guy, I'm not happy too. Just praying that there is another side to the coin and its just transient politics. There is still a lot to play out though. The one thing that struck me is that he wasn't ruling out the core reason, he talked more about the mechanism; please note, I will not try to convince anyone on this issue (except about my own convictions). I am quite sure there is still much more that will be brought into play after May (if GEJ gets the mantle, by God's Grace). |
I am beginning to feel that many Nigerians cannot comprehend the simplest English sentence, either that or there are so many who will willingly generate and swallow falsehoods. I wonder how any educated person could have come to the conclusion that the SSS had exonorated Dokpesi? It is shocking, disgraceful and dangerous behaviour. |
Terrorism: Dokpesi not cleared, says SSS News Oct 20, 2010 By Emmanuel Ujah The State Security Service, SSS, has clarified that the Chairman of Daar Communications and Director-General of the Ibrahim Babangida Campaign Organisation, Chief Raymond Dokpesi has not been exonerated in the on-going investigations on terrorist activities in the country. A statement by the organisation’s spokesperson, Mrs. Marilyn Ogar in Abuja, Wednesday, that media reports (not vanguard) that Chief Dokpesi has been cleared after investigations was false. She said investigations were still on-going and as such it was wrong of anyone to say that Chief Dokpesi has been exonerated. Below is the full statement, “The attention of the Service has been drawn to the misrepresentation of its recent Press Briefing by segments of the media. “We wish to categorically state that the Chairman of Daar Communications, Raymond DOKPESI (Chief) was arrested in connection to information disclosed about him by the suspects in custody. “The fact of his subsequent release does not in any form amount to his exoneration since investigations are still ongoing. “The Service restates its call on everyone to avoid the politicization of an issue of serious public safety”. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2010/10/abuja-blasts-dokpesi-not-cleared-says-sss/ |
truly:If petty people hadn't clutched at the nearest straws to damn GEJ with, nobody would mentioning nonesense like charisma and spoken English. When did these things rise to any importance in a country where a 300km road journey has been known to last 3 days (Lagos - Benin), there is epileptic power supply and in the North where illiteracy is highest, Boko Haram is running rampant, burning and killing in a macabre fight for the right to remain illiterate and backward? I put the blame squarely at the feet of people like yourself. As an example, rather than mention a tangible weakness, you are belittling GEJ's PhD. Belittling knowledge is a disgrace in any developing country, especially one like ours that is creaking in all four corners and wobbling like a wretch hung on the devils brew. It is for people like yourself sir, to raise your game. Leave the tired old gutter slander behind, leave it for the miseducated and societal dregs on the street corners, we have a job on hand and it is building this country from the ground up, from all cardinal points, North, South, East, and west. The job is about dragging our people out of the gutter, not burying ourselves in there too. When it is recalled that the first attacks on GEJ's diction were on his so called Ijaw accent, and how that accent was poverty stricken compared to Northern ones; the full shame hits one in the face. The initial goal of the attacks on GEJ's accent, were to make him sound like he is unfamiliar and too minority to be Nigerian, especially with jibes like, "he has no political structures" (read that as code for, he is from a minority with no say in this country). When the above is coupled with zoning, the full force of Nigeria's petty and tribal politics in all its gory faecal glory, hits the observer smack between the eye's. Nigeria's empty, directionless, low-blow politics is the big beast we must coral and destroy. That is the real task for you and I, it is a task that forbids casting aspersion on an earned PhD or any knowledge, and a task that forbids petty issues. Leave petty things to petty mind, who do not matter in the wider scheme of things. |
truly:A pack of lies. I have never said anything like the above (except that compared to all credible candidates from all parties, the boldest close to the truth ).But, lets remember that this thread is strictly about Ribadu. |
The Middle Belt has laid down the gauntlet. . . |
Withdraw from presidential race, North Central leaders tell Babangida, Saraki Headlines Oct 20, 2010 By Kingsley Omonobi ABUJA-As the race towards the 2011 elections draws closer, Political Leaders from the North Central Geo-Political Zone comprising, Benue, Niger, Kwara, Kogi, Nasarawa and Plateau States have asked their sons, including former military President Ibrahim Babangida and Kwara State Governor, Bukola Saraki to withdraw from the Presidential race, as they have resolved to support President Goodluck Jonathan for the presidency. The Political Leaders who met behind closed doors in the Abuja residence of the President of the Senate, David Mark (from Benue State) included Governors Gabriel Suswam,(Benue), David Jonah Jang(Plateau), Ibrahim Idris (Kogi), Aliyu Akwe Dona (Nasarawa), Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Minister Senator Bala Mohammed, and former Senate President Ameh Ebute. IBB and Saraki Others included Deputy House Leader Alhaji Baba Shehu Agaire, two former National Chairmen of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Barnabas Gemade, Senator Ahmadu Ali, Senator Tunde Ogbeha, Sports Minister Isa Bio, Minister of State for Information and Communication, Labaran Maku, his Niger Delta Ministry counterpart, Sam Ode, Interior’s Humphrey Abba, Comrade Abba- Moro and Director, Research, Planning and Strategy in the Goodluck Jonathan/Sambo Organization, Chief Mike Omeri. At the end of the meeting host and President of the Senate, David Mark said the majority of the people of the zone have resolved to support the Goodluck/Sambo ticket as best option for Nigeria. North Central co-coordinator for Jonathan/Sambo Campaign, Gabriel Suswam stated that the Zone was already looking beyond the Primaries, “because we have a President who is doing very well and we have resolved in the North Central to support Jonathan/Sambo ticket”. Suswam said the group is looking beyond the Presidential bids of former military President Ibrahim Babangida and Governor Bukola Saraki because” we have endorsed Jonathan and we are strategizing for him to win the general election convincingly”. On his part, governor Ibrahim Idris of Kogi State said, “The whole world knows that we are actually for Jonathan/Sambo and by doing this we want to make sure that our support base is solid and intact.” Minister of State, Information and Communication, Labaran Maku, said “you can see the galaxy of dignitaries here. It is the nucleus of the North-Central otherwise called middle Belt Zone. We have once again decided to support Jonathan/Sambo for 2011”. “We have gone beyond this Zoning or regional thing. The election of Goodluck Jonathan in 2011 is going to go beyond this and the election is going to turn a new page. After this period, Nigerians should be bold enough to unite this Country for good”, Maku stated. For Ahmadu Ali, “This is to prove to the entire country that North Central Zone is solidly behind Jonathan/Sambo for 2011. We are going to turn 100 percent vote in the Primaries and the general election. “The middle beltans have always determined the direction of politics and we are out again to show the whole country where the direction is this time around. We are all for Jonathan/Sambo”. Another former National Chairman of the PDP, Barnabas Gemade added that the leaders of North Central have decided and “we shall convey this message to our people that Jonathan/Sambo is the answer for 2011.” In his reaction, a Director in the Jonathan/Sambo campaign organization, Mike Omeri said the endorsement has given them a boost, assuring that Jonathan would not fail Nigerians. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2010/10/withdraw-from-presidential-race-north-central-leaders-tell-babangida-saraki/ |

You will no doubt note that I have never done it to you (and you can be sure, I will not). @topic What Jonathan has said in long words, is he is okay with the National Conference if it is organised through the NASS. That is my understanding, he is against an adhoc thing that is not backed by any law. That said, I feel some trepidation because the question has become open ended, so I will await further clarification. |
Jarus take note. See how Beaf has managed to wrap Ribadu in Tinubu's shadow just to discredit everything he stands for. Thats what support is about. Have you ever seen him mentioned any downside to GEJ? no. Let me give you an example, it is well known that PDP has many more corrupt politicians, many who are supporting GEJ now Anenih, Alameseigha, OBj, Daniel, the list is endless but you can never see Beaf mentioning these things when talking about his candidate. rather he will always find things bad about opponents. Learn from him. Before you support, you must have weighed all the pros and cons of the candidate before supporting.
Jarus has done no wrong. Contrary to what you think, I genuinely love Ribadu and have always been a fan. I just don't wish to see him cheapened and discarded by a cheap, drug tainted criminal like Tinubu. Ribadu has fallen into a trap, I asked the question before; what party allows its presidential candidate to attend interview after interview and come out looking lost and incapable? I don't like what ACN is doing to the man. Quite clearly, ACN's interest in Ribadu dovetails neatly with Tinubu's; and from all indications, Tinubu's plan is to use an inexperienced Ribadu as a disposable bridge to escape punishment for his crimes. Every true Ribadu supporter will kick against the sacriledge the man is being put through, just like Jarus has done. |
hercules07:You will find that the math for that has already been done and all i's dotted, plus all t's crossed. Nigerians spend a whopping $13billa on generators every year!!! 40% of the cost of business in Nigeria is spent on generators!!! Even if you double or triple or quadruple or quintuple or. . . homerac7:I disagree. How non-commital is this? Chairman of the party in the state, Alhaji Abdulrahman Enagi during a meeting with the campaign co-ordinators of the Jonathan Campaign Organization, in Minna said the president had won the hearts of the people with the signing of the bill on the Hydro-Electric Power Producing Area Development Commission (HYPPADEC) into law.http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2010/oct/20/national-20-10-2010-002.htm |
Why is it that some tribalistic blockheads always try to derail every story with their foolishness. This is a thread about the welfare of krendo's North, but can you imagine he has nothing to contribute? Not even words for his peoples safety? Contrast this with the period Aba was under siege and you could almost feel slap1 love and passion for his homeland. It is a massive shame that all krendo can think about is MEND (to the extent of derailing the thread), while Boko Haram is directly threatening his people with cold blooded murder, rabid mayhem and religious extremism, in their so called fight for the "right " to remain illiterate and Neanderthal? Wonders shall never cease! |
I didn't realise that there had been a very hot arument. Wow! Anyways, the fact that Emeagwali super hypes his achievements does not make him a fraud. We need to be careful with our use of words. Emeagwali has not defrauded anybody with his big stories, lets not bring the man down for nothing. |
OAM4J:I like the way you've boiled it down to the bare essentials. At our point in development, spoken English does not count in any way. We need vision and integrity, I will go so far to say that vision should be the greatest asset on our shopping list. In the practical World, integrity always follows vision, either matching in step or following closely behind. |
krendo:When the trial time comes for those who chopped up and burnt women and babies in Jos, I'm sure you would ask that they be given amnesty too, since their actions were for the same class of tribal and religious reason that drive Boko Haram. Your position is very foolish. What is the political message of Boko Haram? |
guddsid:It depends on when he submitted the 40 applications and if the applications were for provisional or full patents. The sheer volume quoted would suggest that the applications were made over a period of years; if that were to be the case, by now we should at least have a single patent that is attributable to Emeagwali; except he made worthless applications (which anyone can do), but bearing in mind that your average patent application costs about $5,000.00 (some companies spend up to $20,000.00), that would be a foolhardy thing to do. Applying for one patent no be moi moi, talkless of 40 invisible ones. The only other ways his applications aren't visible is if he submitted forms and did not pay any fee's, which leads to abandonment after 3 months (daft thing to do 40 times); or if he applied for provisional patents and marked them invisible, however provisional patents only give a one year cover after which a full patent must be applied for, we would expect at least one patent to have come through by now. The verdict only Emeagwali's patent claims isn't very good. |

Nigerian air force joins bid to contain Islamic sect Tue Oct 19, 2010 5:07pm GMT By Ibrahim Mshelizza MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (Reuters) - Nigeria's security services are beefing up efforts to contain a radical Islamic sect in the remote north, launching joint army and police exercises and using attack helicopters to help with patrols. Army Chief of Staff Azubuike Ihejirika, appointed by President Goodluck Jonathan just over a month ago, said on Tuesday he had instructed the security forces to be at the ready after a string of attacks blamed on the radical Boko Haram sect. The group, which wants sharia (Islamic law) more widely applied across Africa's most populous nation, launched an uprising in the city of Maiduguri last year which led to days of gun battles with the security forces in which hundreds died. "I have directed that henceforth the army and police are to carry out joint exercises to enhance their operational readiness," Ihejirika told reporters during a visit to Maiduguri to assess the security situation. "The air force has also joined the operation by deploying helicopter gunships to cover a wider area," he said. Suspected Boko Haram members burned down a police station in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, last week, and have been blamed for the targeted killings of police officers, politicians and traditional leaders in recent weeks. The unrest has raised fears of a repeat of last year's uprising, which began with attacks on police stations, government offices, prisons and schools. Nigeria is preparing for a fiercely contested presidential election due in January and can ill-afford insecurity in the north. It was shaken by car bomb attacks in the capital Abuja on October 1, claimed by a rebel group in the oil-producing Niger Delta, hundreds of kilometres to the south. "CRIMINAL NOT RELIGIOUS VIOLENCE" Borno state governor Ali Sheriff, who was in Abuja last week to discuss the situation in Maiduguri with the president, said the targeted shooting of police officers meant the situation had gone beyond the control of the police force. Four 100-strong units of anti-riot police (MOPOL) along with soldiers from neighbouring Bauchi and Plateau states have already been sent to Maiduguri, although the situation has been calm for the past week. A self-proclaimed Boko Haram spokesman was interviewed on local radio stations last week saying the violence would stop if imprisoned members of the sect were released and given amnesty. But Sheriff said there was no question of negotiating with the group. "We cannot and we shall never negotiate with criminals who want to be allowed to continue killing innocent individuals. No true religion encourages killing of people and that is what they want," the state governor said. Nigeria, a vast nation of more than 140 million people, is roughly equally divided between Christians and Muslims. The vast majority of the Muslim population, the largest in sub-Saharan Africa, do not espouse Boko Haram's views. Its followers eschew the use of Western-made goods and are sometimes referred to as the "Nigerian Taliban" for their long beards and turbans. But there is no published evidence of any links with foreign groups. Maiduguri sits in one of Nigeria's poorest regions near its northeastern borders with Cameroon, Chad and Niger in the Sahel, a strip of arid savannah on the southern edge of the Sahara. It is unclear how many followers Boko Haram has, but poverty, unemployment and a lack of education have meant its leaders have managed to build a cult-like following who are as much violently anti-establishment as fervently religious. http://af.reuters.com/article/topNews/idAFJOE69I0JZ20101019?sp=true |
