I believe it is most important that Jonathan removes Gen Maina, the GOC in Jos. Or at least ensure that he is as ineffective as a wad of toilet roll.
This is the time to reposition the army, strip any suspect brigades off weapons and 100% arm up loyal troops, MEND, MASSOB, OPC and any youthful Middle Belter/Southerner that can weild a cutlass.

No state of emergency should be declared, either in states or nationally (even if Heaven falls), because thats what the criminals want.

I really pity IBB and his goons, there is no way now that he isn't going to end up in jail. The only way for him now is to quietly drink otapiapia; no man can hold a nation of 150 million to ransome.

It is time to face down the baboons that have held this country back. The reason for IBB's bad bele is that whole of PDP (North, South, East, West) seems to have crumbled like butter in his palm after the declaration, so IBB and his girlfriend Atiku have been left naked.

He did not go because, IBB and his crew are threatening to plunge the country into war and kill Southerners in the same way it happened in 1966.
The man has to remain behind to stabilise the country.

May the blood of MKO, Dele Giwa and all the innocent souls IBB has consumed make him run mad.

Politics › Local Pipes Usage Debuts In Nigeria’s Petroleum Industry by Beaf(op): 11:09pm On Sep 20, 2010
Local pipes usage debuts in Nigeria’s petroleum industry
By Bassey Udo
September 20, 2010 12:34AM

Nigeria’s effort at domiciliation of the petroleum industry operations through the Nigerian content policy appears to be yielding the desired dividend, as key multinational operators have started deploying locally manufactured pipes in their fields.

American energy giant, ExxonMobil, has pioneered the use of made-in-Nigeria pipes in its operations, with plans to deploy Helical Submerged Arc Welded (HSAW) pipes fabricated by SCC Pipe Mills for its Usari-Idoho pipeline replacement project in Akwa Ibom State.

The pipes will be used for the replacement of the 24-inch oil pipeline connecting the Usari and Idoho platforms, located in the company’s shallow water oil fields in water depths of 21 metres.

The feat, which would pave the way for made-in-Nigeria pipes to be used for an oil and gas project in the country by any international or local operating company, is expected to unlock investments in pipe mills and other oil industry support facilities.

Executive Secretary, Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), Ernest Nwapa, said at the weekend at a meeting with representatives of China’s major welded line pipe maker, Jiangsu Yulong Steel Pipe, led by its director of sales, M. A. Abbas, that a number of investors have already firmed up plans to establish pipe mills and related facilities in Calabar in Cross River, as well as Koko and Gbaran Ubie in Delta State.

What is delaying the Final Investment Decisions (FID) of these investors, Mr. Nwapa said, were concerns by SCC that products from its pipe mill in the country was not being patronised by the industry.

He described the use of SCC pipes by Exxon Mobil as a breakthrough in the implementation of the Nigerian Content Act and a strong signal that government, assuring that investments in the country’s oil and gas industry in support facilities, would be protected and patronised.

Nwapa urged serious investors to speed up the pace of execution of their projects by taking advantage of the Nigerian Gas Master Plan (NGMP) infrastructure project and the Calabar-AKK pipeline project being promoted by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) on behalf of the Federal Government.

Minister of Petroleum Resources, Deziani Alison-Madueke, said two weeks ago, at the inauguration of the NCDMB governing council by President Goodluck Jonathan, that the steadfast implementation of the Nigerian Content Act would lead to the establishment of three to four new pipe mills and other ancillary manufacturing plants in the next four years to service the demands of the industry.

According to Mrs. Alison-Madueke, the Federal Government’s vision is to retain over $10 billion out of an average annual oil & gas industry expenditure of $20 billion in the Nigerian economy, compared to the current sum of less than $4 billion.

The Usari-Idoho pipeline replacement project is being executed by Saipem Nigeria for ExxonMobil, with extensive tests carried out on the pipes both locally and overseas to confirm that they met all required technical specifications.

With the confirmation that the pipes fabricated by SCC met all international standards, the Executive Secretary pointed out that there was no reason why other operating companies in Nigeria would not join in sourcing their pipes from the company and other proposed pipe mills across the country.

Nwapa also noted that NCDMB had insisted that any of the proposed Nigerian pipe mills with the capacity to meet the project schedule of the Calabar-AKK pipeline project or any other project in the petroleum industry would be fully utilised before any quantity could be imported.

Although the SCC pipe mill has a capacity of producing 30,000 tons at a time and an annual capacity of 100,000 tons, the only order placed in the factory since it was upgraded was three years ago, with about 6,000 tons by Exxon Mobil in 2007.

Though Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) and Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NOAC) are reportedly processing orders for supply of line pipes from the SCC mill, Mr. Nwapa charged other operators to toe the same line in order to encourage keen investors to progress their pipe mill construction.

At the meeting between NCDMB and representatives of Jiangsu Yulong Steel, it was gathered that an agreement was reached to set up a joint NCDMB/Julong project team that will work on the proposed movement of the company’s 250,000 tons longitudinal submerged arc welded pipe mill to Nigeria.

Politics › Worrisome, Ominous Signs Of Disintegration by Beaf(op): 11:06pm On Sep 20, 2010
Worrisome, Ominous Signs Of Disintegration

It is no longer news that former despotic military President Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida has thrown his hat into the ring in order for him to have another shot into the nation’s presidency on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The occasion was held with fanfare at Eagle Square, Abuja on Wednesday. The declaration of General Babangida (retd.) fondly called ‘IBB’ by his admirers, sent an unfavourable signal to the continued corporate existence of Nigeria as a united entity for several reasons.

The antecedents of IBB as a military president should be a source of worry to rational-thinking beings across the length and breadth of this nation even beyond. The elaborate dimension of the declaration was enough pointer to anybody who cares to know that IBB really meant business; and his declaration cannot be divorced from the agenda of the North with reference to the lingering zoning brouhaha within the PDP.

It was observed that speakers after speakers on the occasion of the IBB declaration were reiterating the fact that zoning was entrenched in the PDP constitution, citing section 2(c) as their justification. The course religiously and vigorously being advanced by those in favour of zoning has been that President Goodluck Jonathan who paired up with the late President Umaru Yar’Adua, was actually using the slot of the North which was prompted by the demise of Yar’Adua who would have used two terms of four years each. To the protagonists of mastery of zoning within and outside the PDP, since former President Olusegun Obasanjo, a South-Western, who was not popular in his geo-political zone, spent two terms of eight years, designing anything less for Yar’Adua post-humously would amount to shortchanging of the North.

The South-South geo-political zone, on the other had, has been boasting that zoning should be disregarded in the prevailing political logjam bedeviling the nation. The South-South which is the goose that lays the golden eggs of the nation has vowed that she would fight with the last drop of her blood to enthrone her kingsman as the nation’s president in 2011.

The South-South’s justification has been that President Jonathan, their kingsman, was a co-pilot with the late Yar’Adua, in flying the aeroplane of the nation, saying when Yar’Adua joined the great majority, nature had put the responsibility of flying ahead on President Jonathan, arguing that it would be an act of irresponsibility for him to have allowed the plane to crash by waiting for another pilot to take charge. The South-South zone of the nation is notorious for brewing commercial kidnappers and militants. It is worthwhile to mention that some of the notable militants from the zone had threatened that if Jonathan is not fielded by the PDP in the 2011 election as president, the whole nation would be made ungovernable which is a prelude to secession of the petrol-rich zone.

Lest I forget, during my short electronic sojourn to the IBB declaration at the Eagle Square in Abuja on Wednesday, I was all the while expecting to see one of his boys in the South-West, embattled Osun State Governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, occupying a conspicuous position. But, I was dead wrong because Oyinlola who is a grandmaster of deceit had travelled abroad a day to the IBB declaration in order for him to have his political credibility intact before Jonathan and Obasanjo. A source close to Osun State Government House also disclosed that the Okuku prince will also not be attending Jonathan’s declaration this weekend under the pretence that he would still be on a working visit aboard. The idea of the military governor’s trick is to play safe before two masters. Obasanjo and Jonathan who know that Oyinlola is an unrepentant ‘IBB Boy’ have been watching the activities of Oyinlola.

To this extent, an espionage team who assessed the popularity of Oyinlola in the state PDP was sent down from Wadata Plaza, Abuja, last week. The kernel of their finding was that, though Oyinlola was the leader of the party in the state, but he has a limited influence on the party. It was learnt that anytime from now, the state executive of the party may be dissolved and give way to a caretaker committee.

To say that Oyinlola is now more confused than ever is not an understatement as one finds it difficult for his reason for sounding out Alhaji Fatai Akinbade from his overseas’ hideout few days ago if he (Akinbade) could be Iyiola Omisore’s running mate; to which the former declined flatly. Sensing that Oyinlola and the current PDP executive have anointed Omisore as the party’s governorship flagbearer in the 2011 general elections, all other PDP governorship aspirants who feel cheated have now formed a common front and duly succeeded in lodging their complaint concerning the issue at stake with President Jonathan and the party’s national chairman, Chief Ezekwelize Nwodo. Any time from now, the aggrieved PDP governorship aspirants, who would appear in a uniform apparrel, would address a joint press conference, condemning Oyinlola’s anointing of Omisore.

To corroborate the fact that the PDP is in disarray in Osun State and that all is not well with the party at the centre, news of official opening of a parallel state PDP secretariat was flying around the state capital on Thursday. It was also gathered that the PDP faction had succeeded in election a parallel executive members. What further evidence do we need that the self-acclaimed most populous political party in Nigeria is on its way to total disintegration?

As it is in Osun PDP, so it is in other states of the federation and the centre being controlled by the party. John Cambell it was who cautioned sometime ago that if care is not taken, the corporate entity called Nigeria may become history; saying that Nigeria may seize to one in 2015. Though, Campbell is not a soothsayer but a believer in empirical facts, some of which are being witnessed today. The North is roaring; the South-South is talking tough while other geo-political zones are keenly watching the trend of events.

Coincidentally, Nigeria is divided into six geo-political zones, may there not be Yugoslaviation of this country so that Jonathan would not, like Mikhail Gorbachev, who became the terminal President of the Soviet Union, become the last president of Nigeria. At the apogee of disintegration of the Soviet Union, the hitherto one of the world powers was divided into six countries. May our portion never be like this. But the choice is ours.

Politics › Nigerian academics seek to elevate humble Pidgin by Beaf(op): 11:02pm On Sep 20, 2010
Nigerian academics seek to elevate humble Pidgin
By Yinka Ibukun
September 20, 2010 06:01PM

It may share many of its words and basic grammar with English, but a perplexed look descends across the face of most newcomers to Nigeria the first time they are addressed in Pidgin.

"How you dey?" comes the question, or "How body?" (both meaning "how are you?"wink

"I dey fine" is the correct response, or, if you're in a less upbeat mood, "body dey inside cloth", meaning "I'm coping/making do with the situation," or literally "I'm still wearing clothes."

Once considered the language of the uneducated, Pidgin is one of the world's fastest evolving languages and Nigerians of every age and social class can now be found greeting each other in its clipped, concise tones.

Spoken by an estimated 50 million people, variants are also used in Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Now, for the first time, a group of academics is working to elevate the status of Nigerian Pidgin to more than just a practical means of communication in a country with several hundred indigenous languages and a huge educational divide.

Created a year ago, the Naija Languej Akademi is the first to try to harness the unbridled growth of Pidgin by putting together a reference guide which would include an alphabet, the first comprehensive dictionary, a standard guide for orthography, and an authoritative history of the language.

"It's not a contact language any more, it's an independent, fully fledged language," said Christine Ofulue, head of linguistics at the National Open University of Nigeria.

According to the Akademi's research, Nigerian Pidgin English evolved from a contact language developed in the 1400s to trade with the Portuguese then the British in the southern Niger Delta, a shipping route for the slave trade, then for palm oil, and now the hub of Africa's biggest crude oil industry.

It draws from indigenous languages such as Edo, Itsekiri and Yoruba, meaning many of the hundreds of ethnic groups in southern Nigeria can claim it as their own.

The Naija Akademi is funded by IFRA-Nigeria. IFRA-Nigeria is an institute set up with French Government funding to promote research in the social sciences and the humanities, and enhance collaborative work between scholars in France and West Africa.

Constantly evolving

Pidgin has become the language of choice for entertainment media wanting to appear all-inclusively Nigerian, in a country where national identity is tested by competing ethnic loyalties.

"Pidgin is the only language that cuts across Nigeria," said Mallam Okechime Abdul, a music producer and promoter.

"To speak the Queen's English, you have to go to school, but everybody understands Pidgin. Yoruba, Hausa, and Ibo people, they can all understand Pidgin."

Brimming with life, playful and illustrative, Nigerian Pidgin English lends itself well to creativity, evolving quickly and readily borrowing from current events.

A World Cup blunder by Nigerian player Sani Kaita briefly spawned the word "Kaitalistic" to mean catastrophic and the frequent acts of kidnapping in Nigeria has popularised the term "Colombia people" to describe the perpetrators on Nigeria's first pidgin station Wazobia 95.1 FM.

"American Presido say time don reach to comot im troop for Iraq," announced the newscaster on a recent lunchtime bulletin, after U.S. President Barack Obama announced a formal end to the U.S. military's combat mission in Iraq last month.

Nigerian Afrobeat music pioneer Fela Kuti was a major proponent of Pidgin, further popularising its use with albums like "Why Black Man Dey Suffer" and "I Go Shout Plenty".

"Good English (could) not convey the message of African music," he was quoted as saying in one of his biographies.

Despite the popularity of Pidgin, the Akademi faces an uphill struggle convincing all Nigerians, many of whom see it as a by-product of the country's falling education standards.

"Pidgin looks like a bastardization of the English language," said Reuben Abati, chairman of the editorial board for Nigeria's Guardian newspapers and a respected columnist.

"The West African elite, who see it as the language of commoners, like to dissociate themselves from Pidgin. They want their children to sound like Upper Class Britons. That attitude is wrong because it has to do with identity. As second users of the language, we must promote varieties of English."

Here it is again, for emphasis;

He said when they overthrew the government of General Muhammadu Buhari in 1985, it was on the understanding that he, General Babangida and the late General Sani Abacha would govern the country in turn. Babangida and Abacha had their turns, leaving him as the only one left to have his turn as president of Nigeria. He was said to have expressed dismay that each time he sought to actualise his dream of becoming president, General Babangida, who had ruled the country for eight years, would also throw his hat into the ring.
