Abba-Ruma leads Yar’Adua group in negotiations with Jonathan By Sola Adebayo and Olamilekan Lartey, Published: Monday, 1 Mar 2010 Indications emerged on Sunday that ministers loyal to ailing President Umaru Yar’Adua, had begun negotiation with the Acting President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, on how to be integrated into the new order in the Presidency. A reliable source in the Presidency told our correspondent on Sunday that the Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources, Dr. Sayyadi Abba-Ruma, was leading the pro-Yar’Adua elements in the discussion with Jonathan on the way forward, in view of the worsening health condition of their principal. Our correspondent learnt that the Chief Economic Adviser to Yar’Adua, Dr. Tanimu Yakubu, is also a member of the team. It was gathered that the pro-Yar’Adua elements initiated the meeting because they believed it would be difficult for Yar’Adua to return to office due to his deteriorating health condition. Investigation by our correspondent showed that the team was raised by the President’s wife, Turai, as it was becoming apparent that it would be difficult to sustain Yar’Adua’s presidency. This is in the light of widespread calls from within and outside the country that the President should either resign or be impeached on account of his protracted illness. Our source in the Presidency disclosed that the discussion, which commenced on Thursday in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, centred principally on how the “Yar’Adua political family” would be brought on board on the Jonathan presidency and to provide soft landing for core loyalists of the President. It was gathered that the team urged Jonathan to allow Yar’Adua’s loyalists to produce the Vice-President and retain members of his kitchen cabinet at strategic ministries in the event of a cabinet reshuffle by the Acting President. Our correspondent learnt that the group loyal to Yar’Adua was apprehensive about their political future in the emerging political scenario in the presidency. The source, who pleaded anonymity, said the pro-Yar’Adua elements had nursed the fears that Jonathan might not be comfortable with them in the new order because of their loyalty to the President. Specifically, the team pleaded with Jonathan to guarantee and sustain the political and business interests of Yar’Adua’s family in the likelihood of his confirmation as president. It was also learnt that the Ruma-led team also brought a message of felicitation from a former governor of the South-South, who had been widely reported to be opposed to calls to make Jonathan Acting President. Our source, who is one of the close aides of Jonathan, quoted the Acting President as saying that everybody had already been brought on board in the new dispensation. He said Jonathan assured them that nobody would be persecuted on account of his/her role in the succession crisis in the Presidency. The source added, “Negotiation commenced last Thursday between the loyalists of President Umaru Yar’Adua and the Acting President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, on the way forward for the country in the wake of the protracted illness of the President. The team was led by the Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Sayyadi Abba-Ruma, and the Chief Economic Adviser to the President, Dr. Taminu Yakubu, was also present. “The meeting was initiated by those loyal to President Yar’Adua because it is now clear to them that it would be difficult for Yar’Adua to continue as president. “The Ruma-led group requested that the pro-Yar’Adua group be allowed to produce the Vice-President whenever the Acting President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, emerges as substantive president, and that some key ministers from Yar’Adua’s clique be retained in order to serve the interests of Yar’Adua’s family. The group also urged the acting president to forgive a South-South governor, who spearheaded moves to scuttle his emergence as acting president. “The Acting President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, did not talk for long. He (Jonathan) merely thanked them for their interest in the wellbeing of the country. He also told them that all appointees of President Umaru Yar’Adua had already been brought on board. The acting president added that there was nothing personal in all that had been happening and that nobody had offended him personally,” added the source in the Presidency, who craved anonymity. The spokesman of the Acting President, Mr. Ima Niboro, could not be reached for his reaction to the report as he neither picked calls to his cell phone nor replied text messages sent to him. The SMS reads, “Good day. I have been calling to confirm a report of a meeting between your boss, Acting President Goodluck Jonathan and ministers loyal to President Umaru Yar’Adua, on the way forward for the country. We learnt that the group raised by the First Lady, Turai, was led by the minister of Agriculture, Abba-Ruma. The meeting commenced on Thursday. Please give further details.” Also, Abba-Ruma and Yakubu could not be reached on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Bayelsa State Government said on Sunday that the absence of Governor Timipre Sylva from the meeting of the South-South Governors Forum in Benin had nothing to do with his relationship with the Acting President. Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Doifie Ola, said Sylva’s absence from the meeting was a non-issue as it had nothing to do with the Acting President since the governors did not meet with Jonathan. “It’s not an issue at all that the governor was not at the meeting with his brother governors. Let’s not see that as a sign of anything,” Ola said. Ola said in an interview that there was a cordial relationship between the Sylva and Jonathan. Sylva succeeded Jonathan as governor of Bayelsa State. There had been speculations in some circles that Sylva’s absence at the meeting, where the South-South governors pledged their support to Jonathan, was a confirmation of the frosty relationship between the two. Sylva was the only South-South governor that did not attend the meeting. Governors present at the meeting were Rotimi Amaechi, Rivers State; Godswill Akpabio, Akwa Ibom; Liyel Imoke, Cross River; Emmanuel Uduaghan, Delta; and Adams Oshiomhole, Edo. http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art201003012364078 |

Jonathan to start sweeping changes Headlines Mar 1, 2010 By Jide Ajani & Ben Agande ABUJA— ACTING President Goodluck Jonathan is set to swing into action this week with the exercise of full presidential powers. According to Aso Rock sources, he will embark on sweeping changes in the area of security lapses noticed in recent times, Federal Executive Council and electoral reforms hinged largely on the Justice Uwais electoral reforms panel’s report, the power situation and the post amnesty issues. Meantime, the Federal Executive Council will at its meeting midweek receive the report of six man delegation it sent to Saudi Arabia to evaluate the state of health of the President before his sudden return on Wednesday morning. The report could not be considered last Wednesday because of the inability of the Council to meet, following the arrival of ailing President Umaru Yar’Adua. Though Acting President Jonathan has been considered as slow in taking decisions, Vanguard gathered that he has been consulting with sections of the country to arrive at decisions that would stand the test of time. Vanguard, however, learnt yesterday that President Umaru Yar’Adua remains incommunicado and is yet to be seen. Acting President Goodluck Jonathan is set to swing into action Riot act to ministers Even as the jostle for control of the Presidency between forces loyal to ailing President Umaru Yar’Adua on the one hand, and Acting President Goodluck Jonathan on the other continues, the Acting President has directed ministers to do their work without any form of distraction. Vanguard can also reveal that the Acting President is set to dismantle remnants of what an Aso Rock Presidential Villa source described as “the vestiges of the old order”. Investigations by Vanguard in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, last week suggested that Jonathan may be about to stamp his authority on the Presidency this week. His confidence level, which a source described as being “buoyed by the growing support from different quarters of Nigeria’s elite,” is also growing in a manner as to suggest that Jonathan may have put the hassles of the last week behind him. Ministers to be up and doing Consequent upon the admonition from Acting President Jonathan that Ministers should go about their work with dedication and commitment, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Adetokunbo Kayode, SAN, has sent a memo to the National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Maurice Iwu, requesting for the case files prepared against electoral offenders at the February 6 governorship elections in Anambra State. Vanguard was informed that the memo to INEC was received by the Office of the Chairman of the commission last week. Specifically, the Minister of Justice wanted INEC to furnish it with the list of offenders and their attached offences during the February 6 governorship elections. Vanguard has also learnt that this, perhaps, “is the first time that electoral offenders would be specifically requested for by the Office of the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation for prosecution. The source said: “This is a paradigm shift from what Nigerians were used to in times past and it also shows that the Acting President knows what he wants to do and achieve for Nigerians.” Vanguard was made to understand that “INEC, on its part is also ready to furnish the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation with the needed information to prosecute the offenders. “One of the steps already set in motion by INEC”, Vanguard was informed, “is the communication to the Office of the Inspector General of Police. INEC will go ahead with the Police Authorities to send the case file to the Office of the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation.” Jonathan banks on public support Vanguard has also learnt that Acting President Jonathan may be about to assert himself on the Presidency as he makes some moves this week. Sources said that Jonathan was set to make some far-reaching changes in the cabinet last week before the unexpected arrival of Yar’Adua. Speaking in separate interviews with Vanguard, Richard Akinjide, SAN, second republic Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, and Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, former president of the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, said Jonathan should assert himself on the Presidency by mounting the chair designated for the President and Commander-in-Chief. Akinjide said there was nothing wrong with Jonathan sitting on the chair, stressing: “It is very proper for him to sit on the chair because he has all the powers of the substantive holder of the office. There are no half measures in this thing. The President, whether substantive or acting, has all the powers of the holder of office.” Agbakoba added his voice to the controversy surrounding the chair. He noted: “there can be no two presidents of Nigeria at any given time; there can be no two national anthems for Nigeria at any time, one for the President and the other for the Acting President. No As it is, the transmission of letter from the President is a transmission of the presidential powers to Jonathan, simple and straight forward. “There is only one insignia of office and it is on that chair. Once somebody is expected to discharge those powers, every other thing goes with it. The chair can not be vacant when you have an Acting President.” Begins consultation for a possible cabinet shakeup The Acting President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has begun consultations with various power groups in the country for a possible shake-up in the cabinet to reposition his government, Vanguard has learnt in Abuja. The cabinet change is as a result of the polarisation of members of the Executive Council of the Federation, following the long absence of President Umaru Yar’Adua from the country. A highly placed source informed Vanguard that the contemplation for the change, which was expected shortly, is to halt the drift in governance and to relieve cabinet members whose continued presence in the council would engender negative feelings amongst their colleagues. The absence of President Yar’Adua from office has sharply divided members of the Executive Council along the line of pro-Yar’Adua and pro-Goodluck Jonathan with only a few members seen to be neutral. The redeployment of the former Attorney General of the Federation, Michael Aondoakaa to the Special Duties ministry is seen as a direct fall out of this division. Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. Dora Akunyili in her interview with Sunday Vanguard, yesterday, referred to this division in council. According to the source, the planned change in cabinet was not intended to punish or reward anybody but to reposition it for the task ahead especially on the critical areas of governance. He said: “The consultation preceding the cabinet shake-up is to make everybody understands that the Acting President is not on a revenge mission. The most important thing is to ensure that those ministers whose continued presence would drag back this government are excused from the cabinet. It has nothing to do with their loyalty to the Acting President or not. “Supporters of President Yar’Adua would be fully carried along in the assignment and the leadership of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, the National Assembly and other relevant power blocks would be informed and fully briefed by the Acting President before a final decision is announced to Nigerians.” Vanguard gathered that a meeting of the caucus of the Peoples’ Democratic Party would be convened this week to afford the Acting President, an opportunity to brief members of the caucus and secure their consent before making the final changes. “The changes would affect areas that are critical to the realization of mandate of this administration. The Acting President is keen on taking a decision that when the President recovers fully and is ready to continue in office, he (the Acting President) would be able to defend his decision to relieve some ministers of their appointments in the over all interest of the country” the source said. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2010/03/01/jonathan-to-start-sweeping-changes/ |

henry101:Mutallab got through easy with his d!ck bomb, didn't he? So catching a terrorist before he boarded is a plus for us. |
^ Don't be funny. It only failed because Yar Adua (much like you) thought he could use the US to fight his dirty wars of corruption and exploitation, not realising he is too puny to wag the dog. MEND is not even classified as a terrorist organisation by the US (in case you don't know). Olodo. The US has a greater problem with your Mutallabs, Kala Kato's, Boko Harams and whatever crazy new stuff you guys get up to with your misapplication of religion. They will place boots on out territory if the North continues to degenerate, riot and forment religous "revenge"; instead of getting its populace educated and reducing the horrible levels of poverty and decease. Another issue the US is concerned with is the lust for power by the elite at the expense of the masses (as Turai and her fuc'ked up crew / coupists have realised in very stark ways). The US will always act to protect its interests and any argument, wild dreams or wishes we might have will not change that. |
I'm not following you, what did Yar'Adua do to sign away our independence? What will be overturned? Educate me please.
When Yar Adua went to visit George Bush at the White House, he drank tea, eat cakes, saw wonderful hedges and suddenly decided Africom was a very good thing indeed. Whereas, in public, he and other African leaders had been "strongly" opposed to the presence of US troops on African soil. Maybe he even promised George Bush one of his many daughters. Yar Adua was just being daft and shortsighted simply because MEND was giving the army a black eye at the time. Solving the ND problem has always been far less costly than the stup!d measures govt has turned to. But thats what you get in a country predominantly ruled by mental dwarfs. We shall partner AFRICOM to assist not only Nigeria but also the African continent to actualise its peace and security initiatives. It is an initiative to have standby forces in each of the regional economic groupings in Africa |
^ You clearly associated Dokubo with MEND which he has never been part off. If you do know identified MEND commanders off cuff, how can you even to discuss these matters? Its just sad for you that Africom will not arrive our shores, except in an emergency to deal with Boko Harams or any coupists. ![]() Nigeria is a sovereign country, all that bullsh!t that Yar Adua did to sign away our independence will be overturned. |
^ Dokubo Asari is not a member of MEND. So much for "knowledge". ![]() . . .And I straightened you out on Soyinka by quoting from the pyrates web site. He represents MEND. |
The US has openly advocated that Nigeria holds a national conference to solve our issue's. There are likely to be very interesting times ahead (Turai and her coupists already know that). I forsee a future strong and productive partnership between us and the US (at least until Obama goes). @SapeleGuy It is important for us to be able to take care of our own stuff, but as recent events have shown, those in control of the army would rather fight till the last man than do what is right for the masses. Therefore, any positive US interence will be welcome (as was the putting down of the coup a couple of days ago). There does not need to be a military presence. @topic I will suggest again, that it is in Nigeria's interest that MEND becomes a specialist part of the Nigerian army. |

Rakumin dajij(giraffe) cannot apply to you and and me; it applies to you only.
Yes I didn't know the meaning, but it sounds like a good thing to abuse somebody with. In case you don't know, Africom is more interested in Islamic extremism up North these days. Like I mentioned to sjeezy, a recent Africom intelligence report that say's Northern Nigeria is likely to become the next Pakistan. MEND has always reached out to the US, so there's no need raising alarming gist. The most important partnership right now is to root out Boko Harams and set the country on the right path. MEND is made up of graduates, unlike Boko Haram and other almajiri groups. |

It is old news that an ex-presidents son very sadly lost his life in the ND on a bunkering mission. They even buy mini-tankers like the one that was captured almost immediately Jonathan became Acting President. Rakumin dajij. ![]() |
This is very funny! ![]() So Arewa wants to be the next to join Edo, Bayelsa and Delta to be removed to Benin Republic? Abeg, people should stop spreading rumours with badly built websites. Abi will Arewa be just one man and his compound? |
^ Now you are beginning to see things right. By the way, Africom have a website you can search for a wealth of info. They have even been patrolling the ND for a long time - no be today. |

Pennywise: Damn! ![]() Thats why I said he should build his base (power / political) first. Then he can go to the farm with his cutlass and clear the weeds away. |
You don't pee your pants in public. Thats what all the men are doing. |
@sjeezy You've been talking sense recently, but your last post is way off mark. There is an intelligence report from Africom that predicts Nigeria to be the next Pakistan. . . Guess why? Turai's coup failed because the US was brooking no sh!t. As long as there is a threat of terrorism and growing anti-Americanism in the North, they are ready to put down marines. The threat of an oil rich terrorist state is too great to be left alone. The power equation in 9ja will change for good, to one of merit. I foresee MEND joining the army / govt and helping to build an equitable nation. |
He shouldn't be moved to Katsina, rather all of the equipment purchased to keep him well should be moved to a selected Abuja hospital. We could do with a World class medical centre. |
^ How exactly will Jonathan become "unavailable"? Because right now he isn't. Forget the David Mark nonsense, you don't even know if his job is safe; he is a solid part of the Yar Adua mess. You might as well extend the chain beyond David Mark; see how long and untenable it gets. |

Considering that the acting President was not informed before an armed intrusion into the country in the early hours of the morning, considering that the Commander in Chief of the armed forces did not give any order for the Military to seize the primary Airport in the capital, chase away lawful workers and guests some of them foreign Nationals and sabotage the power supply and block roads in their bid to violate the constitution and its institutions, we can record that a coup de tat actually occurred on that day but for the strong intervention of America, the status quo would have vanished into thin air. Every other event including statements thereafter was just a patch work makeover by the both sides to sheath their swords for a later time.http://www.modernghana.com/news/265804/1/how-the-military-rules-nigeria-by-proxy.html |

Yar’Adua: Army pledges loyalty to Jonathan By AGENCY REPORTER, Published: Sunday, 28 Feb 2010 The Nigerian Army has restated its loyalty to the Acting President, Goodluck Jonathan, as it on Saturday distanced itself from a statement allegedly made by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. AB Dambazau, where the army Chief was said to have stated that he was only loyal to President Yar‘Adua and no one else. Lagos State Chapter of the Action Congress Party which allegedly credited the statement to Dambazau, had condemned it warning that the Army should be held responsible if the present democracy was brought to a sad end. But reacting, the Army said the claims in the statement were false and meant to put words in the mouth of the Army Chief. Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier General AC Olukolade, criticized Mr Joe Igbokwe, AC spokesman, saying he and those propagating the statement were yet to inform their audience of when, where and to whom he made the statement that they now attribute to him. Stressing that the intention was to whip up unnecessary and dangerous sentiments, Olukolade said, “The Nigerian Army would like to reassure Nigerians that it has not shifted from its commitment to the tenets of democracy and absolute loyalty to constituted civil authorities as consistently emphasized and demonstrated by the Chief of Army Staff at several fora.” Olukolade noted that Dambazau, the Chief of Defence Staff and other service Chiefs were among the first government functionaries to visit and pledge loyalty to the Acting President when he assumed office. “The call and warmings coming from Mr Igbokwe and other political activists is indeed absolutely unnecessary as no coup or security breach is being contemplated by the Nigeria Army. The whole statement therefore amounts to an unfair comment founded on an imaginary stement which did not emanate from the Army leadership,” Olukolade said. The army advised well meaning Nigerians to disregard alarmist statements from some quarters which are not meant to promote the peace and security of the country. http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art201002285462443 |
